Official NHL Not 15 (14) Discussion/CAG Team Thread - Headsets On Pants Off! New Team!

New Oculus Rift prototype being shown off at CES. In addition to a 1080p screen (which is now OLED), it now also has positional tracking thanks to an IR LED/camera set up (which is funny because I've seen mods for the original Rift where people did the same thing), and they've also figured out how to eliminate the motion blur you got from moving your head quickly (basically, the screen wasn't able to replicate the subtle movements your eyeballs make when you turn your head...but not anymore).

They say they still have some things to work out, but hopefully this thing will be out by next Christmas. Just have to time it right to unload my developer kit before it loses all value.

Thanks for letting my buddy play. He's very anti social. Nhl tonight or tomorrow?

He also needed to pass the puck a bit more lol.
Yeah, but he had the dbag shot down pretty well, lol. In a well-oiled team offense, I think that would actually be a valid weapon. But we all know how it looks when one guy skates into the zone, twirls his stick, and picks a corner.

On defense, he wasn't bad. I could tell he's used to rotating though...so forwards really have to be paying attention. Honestly, I think that's something we could do a better job of anyway. There are times when you should just attack based on momentum and where the puck is going.

It's like in baseball on a shallow fly ball. The infielder can go out to get it, but it makes more sense to let the outfielder come in and make the play because his momentum is going to carry him in the right direction anyway. But with hockey, you can't just let the defenseman (outfielder) charge in. A forward (infielder) has to switch with him.

The other side of that coin though is the d-man can't do that every time down the ice. Playing within a team means utilizing your teammates and giving others an opportunity to make plays. Mostly, this can all be summed with "awareness"...and self-awareness is part of that.

I liked having a full team though. Like I said, it's rare that we have 5 anymore. So, I'm all for it.

I'd never be able to play Saturday's. That's my real Hockey night! Yeah, he tries it against me all the time in 14 and he gets destroyed. In 13 he would dominate me cause of it. BUT, yes. Def needs to pass. A forward with the douche shot could be an advantage though when we are down and boom, tie it up cause the other teams want to be douchers. Yet, I'm going to be honest here, I've seen wingers skate the puck up while Nate is waiting at the line or has a full head of steam and stops. It kills his momentum. Where as if you pass it to him, you could keep going and he could give you the give and go pass or he goes in and you trail. I will say, as puck movement and passing goes, it's amazing how we dominate that category. Also, if you see me behind the net, I'm actually trying to read eveanybody. It slows down the pace to get collected and allows people to move where they need to. It's just one of those tools. I also know I need to get rid of it sooner as well sometimes.

This is exactly what I've been saying for like a year now.

Also, this is what I've been trying to say too for when we are in the offensive zone, and a forward skates the puck from the slot back to the Dmen. Stop doing that. Just pass it to us and make yourself open without skating back to the blue line.

That's not just Nate. That's happened to me, happened to Brandon, etc.

Indeed...it's all a matter of balance. Again, it comes down to awareness. I do think there are certain things we need to incorporate that have to be LEARNED in order to look for them. It's easy to fall back into old habits because in previous games, we could get away with only having 2-3 "options" and we could be fairly successful. But to really improve, and do better in this year's game, we need to have 5-6 "options".

One of the things that drives me nuts is bunching up the ice. Unless you've got a clear lane, trying to cut toward the middle of the ice just makes more defenders available to have a shot at you, and it gives your teammates limited places they can go to get open. But if you swing wide, we can spread the ice and one forward can be on the opposite board if the crosser opens up, and the trailing forward can hang back in the high slot (or even directly behind you for a drop pass) if the defense crashes the net.

And if the defense is actually playing properly, you'll still have the option of skating/dumping the puck behind the net and letting the forward on the other board crash for it. Or, you'll have your d-men settling in on the blue line as a passing option too. Too often, we try cutting toward the middle and turn the puck over. These plays can be avoided. We just have to start looking for different things than what's so ingrained in us.

This is exactly what I've been saying for like a year now.

Also, this is what I've been trying to say too for when we are in the offensive zone, and a forward skates the puck from the slot back to the Dmen. Stop doing that. Just pass it to us and make yourself open without skating back to the blue line.
And I do believe I've been agreeing for like a year, lol ;) Maybe I do it more because by playing center, I'm just used to having to watch for when I need to get back to help out on defense, but I try my best to keep an eye on where the d-men are. I can lose track of you guys sometimes, but in general, if I see one of you has a chance to crash and make a play, and I'm in the area, I'll hang back.

But if I'm pinned in a corner or on my back from getting lit up, somebody else has to take notice. Basically, we should very rarely have 4 players at the faceoff circle or closer (unless our other d-man is in like a punt return formation, lol...and even then, probably not something we want to do very often).

Obviously, the game still sucks, and we get screwed by countless things that aren't our fault. But it's one thing if we play flawless and lose. But if we play down to teams and beat ourselves, complaining about the game starts to feel kind of stupid.

I'm personally not using fowards/dmen to avoid calling someone out; it's just easier to type out the general position rather than listing every person. I think we all know "forwards" refers to You, Nate, and Brandon as a group, while "Dmen" means me and Gary as a group, although we've done a bit of position switching lately.

Yeah, Alan and I are the D-Men and You, Nate, and Brandon are the resident forwards. As was said we have been switching but, those are our positions.

Well, the bigger thing to me is that calling people out isn't necessary. We've been playing together long enough that as long as we're all reading and taking in what is being said, I trust that the areas that apply to each of us will resonate and we'll all make a concerted effort to improve in those areas. We're all guilty of different things (and sometimes the same things).

The question is always how much we care to improve at a game that isn't exactly a great representation of the sport. But at the same time...if we don't care, why do we continue to play said game? In some ways, I think that's a big reason why "Steam Night" has become a thing (and Gary leaving us for sexier people). Just going through the motions to take beatings in NHL has run its course with most of us. So, we either try to improve. Or we say "FK THIS GAME...I'M GOING TO ROB A BANK".

The biggest thing that has bothered me in both NHL 13 and especially 14 is that we can dominate a game and still lose because of a shitty goalie or crappy bounces. In '12 if we were the much better team and still lost it was normally because we were making mistakes and giving up easy goals.

In '14 we can totally dominate a team in every way and lose because the game felt like it. It begins to feel like wins and losses are random and that takes away the feeling of accomplishment when we play well for a night. That has been one of the biggest things that keeps me from playing several nights a week like we used too.

That can definitely be true. But then there are a good number of games where if you honestly looked at the box score after the game, you could say we deserved to lose. There have been numerous games lately where we'll get like one shot in a period. If a team is doubling us in time on attack and outshooting us, I'm just going to have a hard time blaming the game.

Some of it does become a self-fulfilling prophecy though. We've been shit on by the game...we expect to be shat on by the game...we play the game shittily...we don't want to play the shitty game anymore, lol.

But I agree. I still get a more "accomplished" feeling from playing Madden...and while crappy things can affect you in that game (fumbles, dropped INTs, etc)...I guess they don't IMMEDIATELY impact the score the way bad bounces do in NHL. If TDs in Madden were being scored on balls that bounced off of 3 people and then were caught, I think I'd feel the same way.

But yeah...the game is the game. If we're not trying to get better at it, we're kind of just pissing into the wind (and not in a good way...wait, what?)

Just saw a list of the worst high school mascots and I can't believe this is real...
Butte-pirates-msn.com_.jpg

lmao...so awesome

Full list here: http://www.rantsports.com/clubhouse/2013/01/03/20-horrible-high-school-mascots/

I wonder if they are just in areas where the population is so low that there simply aren't enough people involved in the approval process where someone would say "Hey, this is a terrible idea."

Could be. But could you just imagine having t-shirts and flags and whatnot that say "Butte Pirates" on them? And that moment when you find out that your house is zoned for that school, so your kid is going to be a Butte Pirate. That's just so amazing.

The other one I liked was the School for the Deaf Leopards. So messed up. "We love 80s rock! Our kids can't actually hear it...but yeah...we're awesome!"

It's like the names we try to come up with in NHL that we know are of poor taste. These places actually thought they were a good idea, lol. "West Virginia Porchmonkeys. What? What's wrong with that?"

In other news, I'm ready for that sweet, sweet NHL 14 loving tonight. Just because it beats me doesn't mean it doesn't love me....right?

In other other news, I tried out my new Wiimote Gun/Rifle/Thingie setup in Contagion last night, and it was actually more user friendly than in Team Fortress 2. I think separating look from aim is just too hard unless you've got full body tracking or something like the Virtuix Omni going on. It's just very tank like. But with Contagion (and most other shooters), the Rift view is just based on the mouse...so you're essentially aiming where you're looking.

Having the gun working complimentary to that was actually pretty fun...as it still let me look down the sights and aim with the gun...but then I could fine tune things by slightly moving my head as well. Sure, it doesn't allow me to go nuts with a machine gun and look over my shoulder to see if any zombies are coming from the other direction. But I don't really think the technology is quite ready for that anyway. It may sound dumb, but just physically holding a gun and pulling a trigger did a lot to add to the experience.

I know tonight's Steam night, but anyone want to play NHL tonight? I just need to get my grade from a B+ to an A- for my Legend card.

I'm good with either. You should get your headset working though so we can get some Payday heisting going.

Yeah, I grabbed it when it was free.

As for getting your skater grade up from an B+ to an A-...I'm not sure playing club play is going to help with that. Granted, we're down to division 5, but it mostly feels like we're spinning our wheels....and have been playing under .500 for quite some time.

I'd just play drop in games and make sure you pick the home team (I noticed a trend that unless it's a team that everyone hates, the "good players tend to jump to the home side...not sure if that has to do with hosting/lag). Even playing defenseman can help since getting one assist and some hits almost guarantees you all A's. Not a fool-proof method, by any means. But neither is playing club games, haha.

I'm up for popin' pills.

Also, do you have any time to play our GM game tonight Nate?
Yeah, I should have some time. I can do like 8 PM EST - 9:30 PM EST (latest starting time). Or again around 11:30 EST (though that could vary a little depending on how well my daughter falls asleep).

Ok, might have to shoot for sometime after 1130 then, dont think I'll be able to make it prior to 930

My God I love simulator games... I'm not sure if we ever saw this one, but apparently, you can simulate being a UPS driver. I want to deliver packages so bad.

As for NHL, I actually wouldn't mind playing tonight (but I probably won't be able to get on till around midnight EST. I'm not going to be able to play at our usual time tomorrow night because my wife has a work function. So, I won't be available. On the plus side, this is a holiday weekend, so I'll have all of Sunday evening open.

Oh, I wanted to ask too. Is something screwed up with our Fantasy Hockey league? I've got a note when I set my lineups that tells me

"Note: This team has hit the GP limit alotted for the F, D slots. Players in these slots are not eligible to accrue any stats for the remainder of the season."

Sooo...halfway through the season and only my goalies can accumulate stats now? lol. Was that some kind of limit that got carried over from last year with the lockout shortened season? I understand you can't have people winning just because their skaters played a ton of games. But doesn't it seem like I hit the limit a bit early?

Everyone but Gary and I have hit the limit according to the website.  Looking at the league settings page I would guess that it did indeed leave the settings for a shortened season.  The 432 game limit for 9 starters at forward is 48 games each.

Didn't think anyone was still actively participating. I checked it and raised the caps by an arbitrary number for now. Will figure out what the real limits should be when I get home. I think Nate is right as far as the carry over from the lockout

Yeah, I still try to set my lineups at the very least. I was pretty busy around the holiday and forgot about it for a little bit. But I'm still participating as much as I can (my team has had a lot of injuries...almost like NHL 14, haha).

In other news, I've been watching some "Lets Play" videos of that Rust game. It seems really well done and really bad at the same time, lol. Some of the elements in the game just don't make any sense. When you kill an animal, you get "raw chicken breast"...no matter what animal you kill. They killed a boar and a wolf and got "raw chicken breast". And if you eat the raw chicken breast without cooking it, you get horrifically sick and start throwing up everywhere.

It apparently also suffers from the same thing Arma does in having a huge map. If you and your co-op partner don't spawn in the same area, it takes for damn ever finding each other. But laying down a sleeping bag creates a spawn point, so I guess that's a fairly easy remedy. I'll be interested to see how the game develops though and when it goes on sale. Still cheaper than 7 Days To Die though...so they have that going for them.

Also, I saw this review of it on Steam and it cracked me up. A key piece of info for this is that if you place a door on your home, you're the only one who can open it.

I love this game, I built a house around a guys house and made him my prisoner, I fed him cans of tuna and cooked chicken when it was available, and some times I would drop in spare logs of wood(when they were available). The best part. he talks to me, keeps telling me his clans going to raid my structure and save him.. I simply respond with .” It puts the lotion on its skin, or it gets the hose again” and by hose I mean I dump charcoal on him.
-Great game hope the servers come up soon, I think my pet may need to eat.
