Official NHL Not 15 (14) Discussion/CAG Team Thread - Headsets On Pants Off! New Team!

Ha...just brainstorming this out loud gave me an idea. IF EA messes it up again this year and playing 82 games is the only option, we could just say screw it and plan to only play one season. At least doing that would allow us to play along with the real NHL season, and we'd finish with one champion at the end of the year. I honestly think I'd rather do that than try to rush through 82 games and get burned out OR sim half the games and not have much control.
Only problem with that is if you have a team that's not very good or are out of it midway through the year, you have no incentive to want to keep playing.

I agree. But if our alternative is not doing GM Connected at all, sadly, that's still probably a better option. I'm just trying to think of it on a "What would suck the least?" scale, lol. So, basically, the options would be:

1. Play all 82 games, playing at least 5 games per week so we can play more than one season.

2. Play less than 82 games, simming a portion of them so we can play more than one season.

3. Play all 82 games, on pace with the season, accepting that we're only going to play one season.

To me, all three of those options create a scenario where people might lose interest...and THAT is EA at its finest, lol.

Yeah, option 2 would probably make me lose interest faster.  If I played at the start and went say 13-5 and then had a set simmed that went 5-13 I wouldn't be very interested in keeping playing.

Of those I think #3 would be worth a shot.  We have tried the other options and they didn't really keep interest going long term.

So, we'd be a full time player playing to the schedule of the NHL player or did I read it wrong? Let's just hope they added a shortened season.

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm coming from with that idea. If EA fucks it up again and only allows for playing the full 82 games, then we're faced with doing something we've already tried that didn't work, not doing a league at all, or accepting that the mode is horribly designed and just doing what we can with it.

Well, we're talking GM Connected...so, you'd just be playing all the games...vs both CPU and human opponents. But we wouldn't be trying to complete it at a break neck pace or worry about player development or the draft. It would just be one long ass season.

I don't think we'd need to enforce "You have to play the 11/13 game on 11/13" (though you could definitely stick to that if you wanted/were able to). But we could use the real calendar for advancement. So, 2 weeks of the NHL schedule equals 2 weeks to get those games played...and if the last day of the schedule is 10/25, then we'd advance on 10/26. Is that any clearer? I seriously hope the option for a shorter season is there too. This is just basically "Doomsday Preparation" because, you know...EA, haha.

And just to throw some math on the idea of option #1...82 game regular season, 4 rounds of playoffs with a possible 7 games in each round...means the two teams in the finals are looking at a possible 110 game season (not likely for every round to go 7 games, sure...but you're probably shaving 5 games off that at best). This also doesn't account for offseason activities and pre-season.

To get through two seasons of that in 11 months (gotta have that one month break before NHL 16), everyone would need to play 5 games per week (11 months = 48 weeks / 2 seasons = 24 weeks. 110 possible games / 24 = 4.58 games per week). The variable factor, of course, would be how many of those games are against human opponents. But even if you said 2 human games per week, that's a pretty laborious pace to keep up for 11 months.

tl:dr - fuck 82 games. Math rulez!

All I hear is "good luck playing defense". Maybe a prejudice I just have against NHL at this point...but the "spin off an incoming check" thing just reeks of exploit. Maybe the new collision system will prove me wrong (ie. real world momentum where if a physical object impacts you with force, your pretty little spin move isn't going to be so pretty)...because they've claimed that "the bubble" is gone. But we'll see.

I wish you would have to constantly move the right stick to stick handle the puck. Maybe in my dreams. Would a lot to the game and make you actually have to try.

Well, really...the stick movement itself isn't the problem. It's the hit bubble and the magnetic puck that make it overpowered. People can give their stick a reacharound for all I care. As long as we can cause the puck to move in a different direction either by interfering with it directly or by bumping into them and making it harder to control. I don't exactly trust EA to understand those concepts though...new engine or not.

It's not the trouble, but for me and probably a very select few, it would make the game challenging. Some moments you need to stick handle like crazy and some you just push the puck up the ice with no pressure. The right stick would completely handle your hands pretty much. Want to stick handle the puck? Up and down on the stick depending how fast you want too stick handle the puck. Want to shoot? Maybe hold LB or some kind of button and same thing, up and down on the thumb stick. It's little things I'll never see but in my head would be a good idea. Like the Fifa mini games pre game that warm you up. I'd love to see a little 2 minute warm up to warm up the goalie. Tons of ideas I'll never see but I can dream off.

Button combinations would do so much for this game. If FIFA can do them, there's no reason NHL can't. But instead, they make LT control skating backward and "vision control". I just get the feeling that the NHL dev team isn't very creative. Little things like loading screen mini games tame vision and creativity. Meanwhile, the NHL team is like "Whoa...guess what guys??? We're going to have goalie fights...and blue ice with stars under your skater!"

Looks like the first batch of DK2 Rifts are finally ready to ship. Mostly seeing people who ordered on 3/19 having their status changed to "processing...preparing for shipment". I ordered mine on 3/26. Supposedly, they'll be continuously shipping them though, so there won't be huge gaps like there were with the DK1. I guess this is supposed to resemble a regular production line a bit more.

Here's the thread, Alan...in case you didn't find it the other day.

I didn't order until 5-20, so I'm waaaaaaay back in the queue lol.

Well, thats kinda the definition of Merc team :p

I don't know how to feel about that. I mean, it's cool...but also kind of a dick thing to just kick the shit out of them, lol. I think I'd want to fight him and see if he still felt like a hot shot, haha :boxing:
There's the guy who somehow got 15 minutes of penalties though, so...

Ah, that one. I was considering that one too, but the pattern on it swayed me the other way.

If you guys are up for any Euro Truck Shenanigans after UFC tonight, the ETS2MP mod has been updated quite a bit lately. Just get the newest version here: http://ets2mp.com/ and then we can figure out what we can launch our trucks off of (you'll probably also want to copy your save so you don't screw up anything with your regular playthrough).

We need this game when it comes out.

Looks amazing except for a couple things. I know this because of all the games I've been to and the numerous times I've played there. So yeah, pretty good memory.

The Lightning sit on the right side as that's where the locker room is and the opponents the other side.

The penalty box also looks odd for some reason.

Last but not least. The American and Canadian flags are on the other side of the rink. No where near the pipe organ.

Very close EA, very close.

Euro Truck got its big 1.11 patch today. Glad we played it on Saturday because now the multiplayer needs to be updated again, lol.

Here are the major changes the patch made:

- 3 new cities: Venice, Graz, and Klagenfurt with a lot of new kilometers to explore

- Seat Adjustment feature

- Several months of tweaks of car AI code

- Re-designed radio player for with additional sorting and filtering options

- New Cruise control features

- Displaying current road speed limit in Route Advisor (disable, or switch car or truck speciefic limits in options)

- Complete UI facelift

- Support for sway bar simulation

- Refined the truck suspension for more control over truck and trailer stability

- Recalculated the center of gravity of each cargo (more individual behavior of the whole rig)

- Controls to adjust trailer stability in options

- Improve collisions of player's truck and AI vehicles

- Re-created all scratch and crash sounds in the game

- Equalized the sound volume of in-cabin engine sounds and external engine sounds for all trucks

- More realistic timing for the air brake sound

- Retarder indicator is lit during automatic retarder usage

- Ability to sell a garage

- Ability to relocate your headquarters to another city
I'll tell you, it's really refreshing to me seeing games like this and Payday 2 that still get continuous support so long after their release. With so many companies having jumped to the yearly release cash cow model, it's crazy how "unusual" this seems. Euro Truck 2 has been out over a year and a half, and goes on sale all the time for $5 now. The fact that they're still putting this much effort into the game says a lot.

Heck, I think ETS2 has had more patches than the last 2 NHL games combined.

What I get from reading  the ETS2 notes:

And by Science, I mean Psychics [sic].

As far as the new Facepunch game goes, I'm not opposed to a studio working on two games at the same time, but what makes me not like what they're doing is that they've scrapped the original game, started a reboot, but the reboot isn't even in an acceptable playable state yet. Should've just kept the second project under wraps until Rust was further along.

As far as the new Facepunch game goes, I'm not opposed to a studio working on two games at the same time, but what makes me not like what they're doing is that they've scrapped the original game, started a reboot, but the reboot isn't even in an acceptable playable state yet. Haha, yeah...I'm excited to try some of the new things in ETS2. Driving to Venice should be freaking fun. And once the game is updated for the DK2 Rift, it'll just be insane. People from the first batch shipment have started getting theirs, and there are some unboxing/basic demo videos on Youtube now. I guess DK1 Rift games do actually need to be updated otherwise it won't work. It doesn't seem like it's a big ordeal to update (some games seem to have been updated in less than a week), but it is something the devs have to go back and address.

There's a video up of a guy playing Elite Dangerous, and he shows off that even in the menus, you can lean in and get a closer look in case anything is difficult to read. It looks so awesome. I can't wait to see videos when the rollercoasters are updated and you can actually lean and look over the sides. That's going to blow people's minds.

As for Facepunch, yeah, I posted something very similar on that Gamespot article. I don't mind them working on another game (I would imagine it's a different team anyway...though, I really don't know how many employees they have). But it does give me a "fool me once" attitude toward their new project. So, in that regard, what are you gaining by announcing a new game if you're going to get negative press and negative attitudes about it?

Just announced, Pinball FX2 tables will transfer from Xbox 360 to Xbox One. This also makes me really, really glad I went with the One. It's kind of crazy developers didn't think of this kind of stuff before launch, but it's more than "backward compatibility" at this point. With digital distribution, they are actually creating their own platform (like Harmonix used to talk about). If they want to retain customers at all, you can't just ask them to rebuy the same stuff.

http://blog.zenstudios.com/?p=4747

That looks sweet.

I wonder though, with positional tracking now, is the floating GPS necessary since you can just lean in?
I don't think all trucks have them. But for the ones that do, you could turn it off. I've read about some people online who already did that because they liked to use the road signs to find their way (too hardcore for me, lol).

It's hilarious reading about people getting "really pissed off' on the Oculus forums about the shipping delay with the DK2. It seems like typical internet rabbling. "They said it would ship in July! This is unacceptable!" blah blah. Would you like to cancel your order? No? Then shut the fuck up, lol. "I'm so angry that my technology that nobody else can provide yet is taking longer than I want it to!! If this hoverboard manufacturer doesn't get on the ball I'm going to be really, really angry!"

You can definitely tell that more "non-developers" took the plunge this time. The expectations are just sky high.

Funny thing is, played nhl 09 yesterday cause my brother in law is only 15 and way behind on sports games for the 360. Anyways, he laid down to block a shot and I tripped right over him. He'd just go for a regular blocked shot and I'd trip over him. Goalies were also live and it was so damn funny. I like how it's a new feature in 14. Like we have all said, oh take it out and then put it back in as as a new feature!

I am available for Steam Night if anybody is around. No idea what to play. I found this thread on getting Unturned working though. Similar to Hamachi, but allegedly easier. Guess it depends if we feel like installing a program to try it out though.

Or, this thread also has a list of servers.

Or...we could play something completely different like TMNT or something.
