Official Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver thread of 10 year nostalgia rush

Yeah, just go with regular Garydose for now. If I remember correctly they are the same, except of course one is a shiny. Once you 'beat' the game, you should go back and get it though because it's really easy.

I will get it when I encounter it, no doubt about that. But I may grow attached to my regular one as I have grown attached to my Pidgeotto.

The pokewalker was such a brilliant idea. Thanks to having lots of homework, I haven't had much time to play my copy of HeartGold yet (maybe 90 minutes so far:cry:), but I've spent a lot of time with the pokewalker since I exercise every day. Yesterday, when I saw the number of watts I had earned from running, I thought to myself "This won't do" and ran some more, lol.

I preordered both games plus figures from Amazon.

Heart Gold showed up earlier this week but no sign of Sould Silver yet.

So I started playing HG and I love it soo far, although I'm barely into it.

My first Pokemon game was Diamond on the DS, so this game is all new to me.

I haven't messed around with the pokewalker yet, but I will!

Can you receive a female starter Pokemon?

I want a female Totodile...popped the game in last night and tried five or six tries to get a female. But, it kept giving me a male. Does the gender of your character affect which gender the starters are? (I only tried a Male protagonist.)

In every Pokémon game, the starters are always male. The only way to get a female Totodile is to breed with a Ditto. Luckily, Dittos are easy to get in this game. You can get one right before Goldenrod City.

My Togepi sure didn't want to evolve. Right when I got to the Salon in Goldenrod, I gave it a haircut, and at the next level, it evolved. Right on. I've never had a Togetic before. Pretty sweet.

Damn, I wasted an hour last night! >.<

Thanks for the reply.

What? That's not true! Starters are absolutely *not* always male. They are ratio-ed, 1/8 are female.

Lol. I can just imagine the constant restarting and constant swearing....

Can someone verify this? I've never heard of a female starter.

You can certainly get a female starter. I got a female Chikorita

Never had one either but can't verify sorry.

So Im in The Safari Zone which opens up in Cianwood after you cure Ampy at the lighthouse.

I love it. Doesnt seem like a time limit since Ive been in here awhile. Maybe when I run out of balls it will kick me out.
This is a great way to pad you Pokedex.

Ive already caught a
Magmar
Sentret
Rattata
and other pokemon.

Ive also saw 5 Kangaskhans, Taurus and some others. Great update.
As theres different patches where you find different types of pokemon.

My starter in platinum was a female turtwig, so it is definitely possible.

Just caught a magby using the pokewalker, next up is an elekid! :D

So far I have caught a Nidoran male, the Magby, and something else that I forget atm. I also had a Sentret (sp?) randomly join me when I was just using the pokewalker without a pokemon in it. I've got 5 or 6 routes unlocked so far too.

It is possible to get a female starter. My Chimchar in Diamond was female. When I bred my Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard in FireRed, the Charmander was female.

As yayece said, the odds are 1:8 of getting a female. Off the top of my head, Eevee is the same.

If anyone wants Bulbasaur, Charmander, and/or Squirtle from me, you have until Saturday night. Then I can't do it for another 10 days (can't get my DS online at school).

Guess I'll be back to restarting until I get a female. I've definitely tried more than 8 times though, so I'm due! :p

Thanks, all.

The odds say you should get one after 9 attempts but it'll probably take longer. I was breeding Heracross eggs in Diamond. Its gender split is 50/50 but it still took me 5 eggs to get a male.

Just caught 2 murkrow and a hoothoot, all of which are female. Also just found out that you can level up a pokemon multiple times a day, you just have to take it on a stroll again and again. I thought it was only once per day but my Nidoran male has already leveled up twice today from the pokewalker. :D

I'd love a bulbasaur please
Actually you know what, forget it. I'm too lazy to change my router to WEP.
I have an Apple Airport Express which I use exclusively for DS wifi.

I have a $5 trendnet one from before CompUSA closed. :)

I also am too lazy to change my router settings.

So I connect to my neighbors network with my DS.

He never put a password on his network. So I did. It's been almost a year and he hasn't figured it out or reset his router yet.

I always thought the ratio was about 75% male and 25% female, though I guess about 12% sounds much more viable.. I always restart my games until I get a female pokemon, don't care about the nature much, just want a female one to breed and trade for other starters. Though I have dittos a plenty, I like having the female so maybe if I ever decide to breed for perhaps a certain egg set move I have it available.

I do the same for Eevee, though I do have one female from Platinum already (I lost my Diamond copy...so all my trained pokemon were gone :( sigh).

I've caught some Kangaskhan, Wobbuffet, Magnemite, Magby and others from the pokewalker. I'm glad I got Magby cause at least I already have a pokemon with flame body to hatch eggs faster when I get to the point. Though to be honest I am playing the game so slowly...I am not even at the second gym, with work and school....barely time left. I do have other starters I guess I can breed later on and trade, since I need some....damn I wish I had my Diamond I had almost all.

Your pokemon can evolve as many times as long as you take the needed steps in the pokewalker and put him back in the DS game. As long as you keep transferring back and forth should level up quickly. Just remember the draw back, evolution can only happen when leveled up in game and no moves are learned unless it was leveled up in the game. So if you miss moves you'll have to wait till you meet up with the move tutor.

I've been careful to not put a pokemon in the pokewalker that will miss a move that I want.

Like you, I am moving very slow. I still haven't even beat the first gym. Most of my time has been spent with the pokewalker.

Ah ok, on the plus side it is a good way to evolve pokemon that you really are not gonna use but want them to be on your pokedex as caught. Just transferring them to the game for that level it needs to evolve and either get some exp or using a rare candy.

I tend to have a few rare candy, just cause I never use them on anyone thinking I rather train them properly to get higher skills that way....though I never do heh.

I'm disappointed with the remixes of the music. They took too many creative liberties with it. I'm still having a lot of fun though. Can't wait to move my Diamond pokes over.
anyone have an elekid? :( unfortunately I only have crappy pokemon...
I have three. Do you care about nature or moves? You can just give me whatever you don't want anymore.

yay! Dont care about natures or moves. I'll give you a luxio. Here is my SS friend code: 1935 2895 1261

I am really loving the Pokewalker. I have caught so many different types of Pokemon on there. I have a decent team all ready, so most types can be trumped. It makes the game much more interesting to play since I can mess around with that all day, then come home from work and "upload" my findings. I just beat the second gym (so slow), but haven't had this much fun with a Pokemon game in a long, long, time. What is the best way to transfer Pokemon from other Gen IV games? Sorry if that has been asked, but I can't seem to find an easy way to do it.
How does nature play a role in contributing the pokemon's performnace in battle??
Natures

Different natures effect the Pokemon's stats, which in turn plays a role in attacking, defending, speed, etc. It is pretty complex, but follow that link and it should clear somethings up.

Edit: If you don't understand Pokemon stats, go here first: Stats

A nature will increase one stat while decreasing another. By level 100, the increased stat will be 10% more what it should be and the decreased stat will be 10% less than what it should be. There are neutral natures (since they'd add and subtract from the same stat).

What nature is good depends on the Pokemon and, if you're into playing competitively, their role. It doesn't really matter with the Pokemon you use in-game to beat the game though.

All this Pokemon talk had me playing Platinum again...

Left work early cause I was feeling sick, put in 5 solid hours of Platinum and just got the Icicle Badge.

I really wanna get Gold/Silver, because of the $10 off TRU coupon, but I feel like I'm gonna get Poke-fatigue if I jump right into another one.

14ish hours in, just got through the radio tower and am about to go towards the 8th badge (I think). My team so far is:

Level 42 Umbreon
Level 40 Feraligatr
Level 33 Graveler (gonna need to turn this into a Golem soon)
Level 32 Togetic

So far, the game is all right. Not my favorite Pokemon so far (although as Ive stated, I havent hit Kanto v2 yet), but Im enjoying myself quite a bit. I just wish that this game was more than a graphical update with a few new locations and a couple story additions. It just doesn't feel like this game was as fresh as it could have felt. I played the originals when I was younger and again a few months back, so this isnt based upon lack of experience

Glad I gave up on Pokemon with gold/silver cause the remake is new to me, so definitely a new experience. I was fine with only red and blue and decided we didn't need more pokemon. As I said in another thread I didn't get back until FireRed came out. Then didn't play anything until Diamond/Ruby/Platinum.

Got to say I am enjoying it, just got to the second gym, but like I said going really slow, and just playing around with the pokewalker more. I do like getting all the pokemon there. For some reason I am really enjoying have a kangaskhan so early on.

Yeah, I try to space playing Pokémon (or any other similar turn-based RPG like Dragon Quest) apart. Too much of the same thing, really, no matter how great it is.

Man, you seem to be barreling through the game. If I was at only 14 hours and heading towards the 8th badge, I'd feel ripped off.

As it is, I've only gotten two badges, am at around 11 hours, and am having a grand old time breeding for a few Totodiles (have 4 now if anyone would like to trade for another starter), and am about 1/4 of the way towards getting a Dratini from the Game Corner. I'm getting the hang of Voltorb Flip.

If you wait, you can get a Dratini for free later in the game that has an exclusive move it can't learn anywhere else (well someone who already has it could breed the move onto egg Dratini).

So Im 21 hours in and only have 4 badges.

Eevee- 21
Lapras- 20
Ninetales-27
Golem-27
Flaaffy-28
Gengar-30

I want to change the lineup real big.
Espeon
Tyranitar
Need a better eletric, im thinkin Jolteon as i really like him.

Spend a lot of time on side quest like the safari zone and getting Lapras last nite in the Union Cave. Will be great for Claire and her dragons.

Man, just checked the guide, and you're right. All the Pokémon offered in the Game Corner can be achieved through other ways in the game. Kind of stupid. I thought that in the past, you could only get the Pokémon offered there from the Game Corner. Maybe it's just you can get them earlier or easier from the Game Corner?
Well, I put my copy in last night, and on the first try (finally!) got a female Totodile.
Nice. If I had known that was possible in the past, I probably would have restarted until I got a female too. As it is, SoulSilver makes getting a Ditto a cinch.
