Official Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver thread of 10 year nostalgia rush
Doesn't being poisoned make it easier to catch?
According to the formula on Bulbapedia, it improves the catch rate by 1.5 (same as paralysis and burn). However, like burn, it does damage. If you encounter it, you'll need to be very careful. I would consider using your Masterball.

Can anyone explain to me EV training? I keep reading about it and I am seriously thinking about restarting my game just to get good natures.
Wha-wha-WHAT?!?!

Dammit...

But he wont lose health unless I encounter him right? That was my experience over the past couple days anyway.

I can avoid him until I have a team better suited to capture him right?

If I run into him again can I use an antidote on him?

*Edit* I imported a Masterball from Diamond last night. I can always use that as a last resort if it comes down to it.
If you haven't beaten the elite four yet, i think if you faint a legendary, they appear again after you beat the elite four. I'm not positive though...

EV training is not something you should do or need to do as you complete the main quest.

Natures aren't important either. It's nice to have a beneficial one, but it's not necessary. My Starmie is a random nature, that didn't stop it from KO'ing Lances 3 Dragonites with 1 ice beam on each. My Gyarados that I used temporarily was a random nature and it had no problem against Morty.

Natures and EVs are something you should only worry about once you've beaten the game and want to train pokemon to fight competitively.

Well how does that work then? My Feraligator is a brave nature. My friends have been telling me that if I do get into compeitive play, it's going to suck. :/

The way natures work is of the 5 stats (Atk, Def, SpecAtk, SpecDef, Speed), one is increased and the other is decreased. By level 100, the increased stat will be 10% greater than what it normally would and the decreased stat will be 10% less than what it normally would.

Brave adds to Attack and reduces Speed. So your Feraligatr will be strong in Attack but slow.

However, if you want to use a Feraligatr competitively, you will want to breed one once you beat the game in order to get the desired nature and possible egg moves.

EVs are gained by beating specific pokemon. Every Zubat you beat gets you 1 Speed EV. You can get a max of 254 in one given stat and 508 all together. However, you need 4 EVs to get 1 stat boost. Since 254 doesn't divide by 4 evenly, you only want to get 252 most in 1 stat, another 252 in another, and then 4 more in something else. EVs don't really take effect until level 100. There's more to it but that's the general idea behind it.

Since you'll be fighting all kinds of pokemon as you play, your Feraligatr's EVs will be all over the place which is why you'll want to breed one and start from scratch one you finish the main quest.

None of it matters for the main quest since it's designed so you can beat the game with whatever pokemon you want.

Good, so my army of Magikarps is not for naught!

Haha

Anyone got a spare Ralts and Staryu.
Thx a bunch

I saw people talking about it ... googled it ... and started getting a headache right away. It was clear that EV training is way above my Pokemon interest.

So you reccomend me to finish the story and then start training new pokemon with the good natures and the right way to EV train?

Yeah. Just play the main quest with whatever pokemon you want and however you want. Once you beat it, EV training is easier b/c you can go to all the areas that are best for certain EVs, have access to more Pokemon, etc.
Find a pokemon with mean look that is faster than the wild dogs and use it on them so they can't run. Gengar with a speed boosting nature is probably your best choice for a pokemon within HG/SS that I can think of.
Thanks for the advice. My Pokémon are all in their low 20's, so they're not really to beat the Legendary Dogs yet. I'm grinding a few levels right now before I take on the 4th gym badge. 30 hours in. I'm sloooow. :D
I keep running into those three Pokemon on my journey. I poisoned one, and to my surprise when I ran into him again the next day, he was still poisoned. I guess he doesn't know the Pkecenter is free.
That's interesting that the Dogs keep whatever status conditions they incur from a previous encounter.
UGH, poisoning is the worst status you can give the Legendaries. It will continue to lose health until it's captured or it faints. And when it faints, it's gone forever.
Well, that makes more sense now. And it also really frightening. I would absolutely reset if I killed a Dog by accident.
thx a bunch to d4k.
Now have a Shiny Ralts and a new way to hunt for shinys.
What do you mean? Does having a Shiny in your party or as your lead increase the odds of finding other Shinys?
What do you mean? Does having a Shiny in your party or as your lead increase the odds of finding other Shinys?
No, my wife just gave him a quick explain on chaining pokemon using the pokeradar to increase the chance of running into shiny pokemon. She chains a lot of pokemon and captures a few shiny here and there. Sometimes it may take chaining the same pokemon over 30 times, without breaking the chain.

There are a lot of rules and it does seem easier to do so in Platinum as the shiny patches are more visible.

Serebii has a more in depth guide as there are a few rules to follow as well as a lot of online tutorials in youtube. I don't bother chaining because it's just not fun for me...I find it incredibly boring. Not to mention I just can't do it properly, always breaking my chain.

No. But that would be sweet.
Check this out for mini info on how to chain.

Only works in DPP and only with pokemon that appear with PokeRadar. Which limits what pokemon you can get shiny this way.

My next task will be to get a sHINY LEAF.

Anyone have any luck.

Yep! I've gotten three shiny leaves so far. Two on my Entei and one on my Rayquaza that I traded over from Platinum.

Sweetness. If you get five you get a crown. Nut supposely the more you get the harder they are to get.

Headbutting trees for pokemon from Hoenn and Sinnoh.
Working on the Pokedex.
So far Im at 150. Seems like nothing.

Got a Jigglypuff and a Gengar from the GTS today. Traded a Eevee and Vulpix respectively. It was nice to do decent trades and not be floored by folks wanting Shaymins and Mews.

Jigglypuff is now in my Pokéwalker, which makes me silly-happy. Jigglypuff is my husband's favorite Pokémon. He finds it so amusing in the cartoon when Jigglypuff puts everyone to sleep.:D

What's the point of the crown? Is it an item that can be moved from Pokémon to Pokémon?

The point of the crown is something cool for your pokemon.
Kind of like Shiny pokemon.
Its just cool and way harder to get than a Shiny.

Couple times my Mew was dancing I thought he had one since I was at his route and everything.

Question. What happens when a pokemon has an item but syas he doesnt wanna give it up?

They play the jigglypuff lullaby song on the pokemon radio. It lowers encounter rates of wild pokemon. I found it yesterday when I was going through the bell tower to get Ho-Oh(he wasn't there when I reached the top, which I should have known but forgot). It doesn't completely prevent them like repels can.

I just started using my pokewalker today. cheating it seems like too much of a hassle, so I just walked 30 minutes today on my treadmill. unlocked two courses and had a spearow randomly join me for a walk.

After a bit of grinding in Mt. Mortar, I finally beat those beastly Kimono girls with mostly my Meganium spamming Light Shield and Return. Darn Ho-Oh, criticaled my Ampharos just before I was safe enough.

Since nobody answered me, I went ahead and traded from Diamond the Jirachi I received in Ruby from the Colloseum pre-order disc. And it did open up the Night Sky's Edge path. So anyone that might still have one and missed the event at GameStop, go ahead and do it.

Cool deal.
I got mine from a guy on Friendcodes.com for free.
The guy was awesome.

Gonna get my Togepi out of the walker tonite so Im all ready for a new Eevee for 2moro.

Will there be anyway to know if you got a special Pikachu since they will look all the same. Or just luck of thew draw.

I'd just recommend to do the steps said there. I would do at least the 10,000 steps and then begin catching Pikachu. You are correct though, there will be no way to know which ones you've gotten until you transfer them, but if you have enough watts just keep trying for them. Once you transfer them you know which Pikachu from which group you have and decide if you want to switch pokemon and hopefully get Pikachus from the other group.

I'm sure I'll look into it at some point. I'll have to study/print off that detailed list from Serebii.

That's awesome. I'll definitely have to watch for that.
Question. What happens when a pokemon has an item but syas he doesnt wanna give it up?
I think that means he has an item you can't store yet. Like if you don't have the fashion case and they find accessories for it, then you can't accept the item.
After a bit of grinding in Mt. Mortar, I finally beat those beastly Kimono girls with mostly my Meganium spamming Light Shield and Return. Darn Ho-Oh, criticaled my Ampharos just before I was safe enough.
Yeah they're pretty strong, and the fact that you can't switch pokemon between battles makes it harder. Jolteon was the one that gave me trouble, I had Feraligatr in the first slot so I switched to Lucario, it's thunderbolt killed my Lucario in two shots. I tried to use Ampharos to paralyze it but it's immune to electric attacks, so I brought out my level 20 Onix( my HM servant) to stall while I recovered my Lucario back to full health. Turns out the Jolteon's faster than my Lucario, so it ko's it again before I could hit it with a second Aura Sphere. Had to send out my other two HM servants to take hits while I revived Lucario one more time to finish the Job.

Now, on to Ho-Oh, and then the Elite Four. Need to figure out what team I'm going to bring to showdown.

IIRC, I put Heracross at the front. OHKO'd the Umbreon with Close Combat. Espeon I used Gyarados' Bite. Vaporeon I used Dragonair's Thunderbolt. Jolteon I used Typhlosion's Dig and some other attacks. And Flareon I used Dragonair's Surf.

So I caught an Adamant Growlithe earlier and was really excited. Then I checked an IV calculator, and was told it has like 0-2 IVs in all stats except for Special Attack, which is 25-31. Talk about a letdown.

I like that they sort of let you know what the nature's do now by changing the color of the stats letters. Red is good and blue is bad. I might actually decide to get into competitive battling if they do a better job of explaining the intricate, yet unmentioned parts within the game that are necessary to field a competitive team.

So, I went through Gen IV without really completely the Pokedex or anything extra... but I'm trying to complete SS right now and I'm curious,

trade-evolve pokemon like Gengar/Machamp, etc... they learn moves now as they level? I remember in Gen I days you should wait until their second form learned all their moves before evolving them, that's no longer true?

Since their final forms have higher base stats, it would be best now to evolve them as soon as they hit their second forms right? 16 for Kabara... 25 for Graveler and such??

If that's the case... I need someone to help me trade over and back real quick ASAP >.

Actually, even in Gen I trade evolution Pokemon learned the moves at the same levels as their pre-evolution Pokemon. It's stone evolution Pokemon like Arcanine and Ninetails you want to keep as Growlithe/Vulpix to learn all their moves before you evolve them.

Eh, been so many years. Well in that case, need someone to help me trade my Grav/Kabara back and forth, preferably now if possible.

I was trying to find a Shiny Leaf last night. Will the Pokémon just get it and tell me, or do I have to turn around to interact with it to find out if it has one?

You have to interact with it. I was really surprised when my Entei had one, I was just playing around on Saturday an when I talked to him he handed it over. After you get it you need to go talk to Lyra and she'll tell you all about the crown.

Is the title ever going to be changed to Heart Gold/Soul Silver?

I forgot how early you can get Ultra Balls in this game, jeez. FF13 has been holding me back on playing through this game a lot.

About 35 hours in, and I just surfed to Cianwood. Surfing is so dull. A huge stretch with just a handful of Pokémon. Can't wait to get Fly. That'll change my game bigtime.

Nice. I actually tried to get one last night, but no luck.

Just got the Yellow Forest. Cant wait to catch me some Pikas!!!!!!!!!!!

I love me some dusk balls.
Sometimes ill wait for nite just to catch pokemon.

I was so happy when my Mew statrted dancing at its route while I was searching for Burmy. We hung out in the grass with repels but no luck. But Mew sure loved it. To bad he didnt find anything.

SL4IN made the thread so hes the only guy to change the name. He should update the front page with friendcodes like Platinum thread had/
You get Yellow Forest by trading the special Pichu over, correct? Man, I wish I had a second DS.
No, it's mystery gifted over Ninteno Wi-Fi connection. :D

After getting all the badges all I have left to do is train, which is a little boring and I don't really want to use my competitive team for any tasks inside the game.

And i just realized the game cartridge is actually black instead of the usual gray,

I have 6 badges so far, and just got Fly.

Since I have Diamond and Platinum, I've decided to 'clean out' my Diamond save. I've been trading pokes from Diamond to my Platinum and Heart Gold saves.

It's not soo much for the pokes themselves, but I make them hold masterballs and TM's and other good items. I don't know if HG/SS have Experience Shares and Lucky Eggs, but I can't live without those items! lol

My wife thinks I'm cheating, but I don't consider it such. I don't use any of the stuff I've brought over to make the single player game easier for myself. I could run through the rest of HG with Dialga if I wanted, but I don't.

Question: Where can I get a Squirtle?

Before I ever played a Pokemon game, my favortie Pokemon was Squirtle. I have wanted a Squirtle from the day I started playing Diamond and I've yet to see one. I have Diamond, Plat, and HG/SS for the DS, and for the GBA I have Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, and Fire Red (still need Leaf Green).

I bought those GBA games used after Diamond came out specifically to import pokes from, and I got some good ones, but never a Squirtle.

You can only get Squirtle by breeding one in FireRed/LeafGreen and migrating it to a DS game.

If you only have a DSi, you're SOL. But if you can get your DS online, you can get someone to trade you one. I can help you out and I'm sure many others here can, too.
