Official Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver thread of 10 year nostalgia rush

My son lost his pokewalker and I was surprised to find that Nintendo isn't gouging (too much) for replacements. They are $8.95, albeit with $5 shipping and if you want the belt clip that's an extra $1. So $15 shipped for a complete replacement. Figured I'd mention it here in case anyone needs one, especially since ebay shmucks are trying to sell them for $30. http://store.nintendo.com/ and navigate your way to DS parts.

a geodude and an oddish, really wish I didn't need 2 slots taken up.

I need to bum a DS off a friend or something so I can transfer everything over from Platinum. Have Evo Stones, Master Balls and so many TMs, /sigh
Who did everyone use as an HM slave early on? I'm currently using sandshrew. Are there some better options?
I started out using a Bellsprout for Cut. But as soon as I was able to, I caught a Krabby and taught it Surf, Cut, Rock Smash and Whirlpool. Fly went to my Pidgeot, Strength to Golem and Water Fall to Ferligator (they're all my standard team pokemon).

I made the Red Gyrados my HM slave. All 4 of his moves are HMs.

I used Rattata for Cut early on when you need it a lot. But after that, I only used my HM slave when I needed it. I traded an Azumarill from Diamond that knew Strength, Rock Smash, Whirlpool, and Waterfall. I traded a Xatu from Diamond and taught it Fly and Flash (also knows Teleport). My Starmie and Dragonite have Surf and Fly since they're always in my party.
You can only get Squirtle by breeding one in FireRed/LeafGreen and migrating it to a DS game.

If you only have a DSi, you're SOL. But if you can get your DS online, you can get someone to trade you one. I can help you out and I'm sure many others here can, too.
Thanks,

I only roll with the DSLite, partly because of those GBA games. Once I'm done with the main game in HG, I'll prolly be looking to trade for Squirtle. Im not interested in playing Fire Red long enough to breed one.

I need to read up more on the different Pokemon and figure out if anything I imported from the GBA games is decent trade fodder.

Thanks for the info. I gave my husband my Pokéwalker today while he's at work, as he's highly amused by having Jigglypuff with him. I worry he'll lose it, but at least I know a replacement isn't too expensive.

I use Ratatta. I really wish that when you cut a tree down, it stays cut.

Geodude and Poliwag. I used bellsprout for Cut and Flash for a bit, too. I don't know why it can learn flash...but it can. Eventually its really nice to get a Tropius. It can learn Fly, Cut, Strength, and Rock smash, which gets you pretty much everywhere except for rock climb places.

Yep! Tropius is actually my favorite when it comes to being bogged down with HMs. I used that for my HM Donkey in Platinum.

I used Bellsprout and then Gyrados and Golem.

I looked om Seribii, do you know what the percent rate of finding a Fly/Surf Pikachu is 2-3% after 10,000 steps.

Good luck to us all.
Are you serious? Is there no way of knowing on the Pokéwalker which Pikachu you encounter?
I believe you will see three exclamation marks (!!!) if it is a group A pokémon for sure, which is a Surf/Fly Pikachu. If its a group B, you'll get two (!!), but I think the chances would be really low to find Surf/Fly in that case even. So look for 3!

Thanks for the info.

Another question: Say I'm trying to reach 10,000 steps, would I have to do that in one day? I've noticed when I leave a Pokémon in the Pokéwalker for more than one day, the counter on the front resets to 0 each day.

It resets the steps each day, but you can check your trainer card to see how many total steps you've walked.

Do steps get you anything? Watts seem to be the only thing that's used. I'd prefer if steps were what was used to unlock new courses and they left my watts alone so I could use the pokeradar right away after unloading a full pokewalker. all 3 pikachu's I caught didn't have surf/fly, and now I have no watts to catch any more. Don't feel like walking any more today, at least not until I read up on how to get !!!'s to pop up instead of !'s.

That's what it seems to be... according to FAQs the # of steps you take in a day will remain for that day and unlock any PKMN/items in ANY route, but they do reset every day so... yeah. This sucks hard.

20 steps = 1 watt, no?

Anyways, it blows hard that the watts reset whenever you return from a stroll, you can't horde them which... makes you walk constantly. Terrible I say.

I wrote most of this when the game came out.

20 steps is equal to 1 watt.
1 step is equal to 1 experience point.

Pokemon can only gain enough experience point to gain one level. If you'd like to get more than one level just trade the pokemon back to the game and back to the pokewalker. Remember, you will not evolve if you gain the appropriate level in the pokewalker, you just need to level it up in the game to do so. You also will not learn any move that the pokemon would have learned at the level gained (you can always go to the move tutor to regain that move).

!!! does indeed mean group A.
!! means group A or B.
! group B or C.
! group C.

Also remember you only get one pokemon for group A, one for group B, one for group C. If you did not get the pokemon you were looking for then you have to either change pokemon in the pokewalker or just unload and load the one you currently have. Of course this is much harder to know with the Yellow Forest, only way to know is once you transfer them to the game.

The reason there can be two options for group C depends if you have the needed steps. If you only started to walk that day, and try right away the ! will mean group C only.

Each road has some pokemon types that will help reduce the needed steps by 25%. You can see those pokemon at serebii.

Makes sense?

I would say so. Your chance would increase that way in getting the desired Pikachu. If you are using a ground, electric or grass type you should lower the steps needed to 7,500. I am currently catching PIkachu but have not gotten the !!! just the !! so we will see what I get in a bit.

That 25% isn't helping much here, these pikachus are asses. They are quick to run, some escape pokeballs, and for the most part I keep getting just one !

if it was going to be this hard they had no need to add the 10,000/7,500 step requirement. that's just an extra shot to the groin for no reason.

I'm at 13000 steps, and only was able to get a Flailing Pikachu. I still cannot get !!!. Only two exclamation marks and that is if I am lucky, it wants to just give me ! over and over again.

Same for me, both in steps and luck. I have gotten 5 or so from the B group, but nothing at all from A and mostly C. A few of the natures have been good though, as well as some of the IV spreads. Also got a Thunderstone, but those seem much more rare than Heart Scales (I have 20+ of them thanks to the pokewalker). It is really annoying how hard it is to get the surfing pikachu (which is the only one I want).
Just got two surfing pikachus. Going to try for some more. Rash and Sassy so far.
You suck

I'm over 16000 steps for the day now and still nothing lol. I doubt I will keep this up much more, so I will have to try again tomorrow.
After 40 or 50 tries, I finally encountered a !!! Pikachu...only to critical hit it and kill it when it had two bars of health left.
The only !!! Pikachu I encountered ran away when I tried to evade due to having low health. I had one !! Pikachu break out of the pokeball, and 2 other !! pikachu's get critically hit when they only had 2 life bars left. I have easily battled over 100 pikachu with no luck, so I am calling it quits for the night. Not sure I will even try tomorrow since this is by far the worst luck I have had on the pokewalker.
Do the special Pikachu ever disappear? Or will they be there long after this promotion ending?
As long as you grab the download, they will not disappear.

Got a question about the Pikachu thing. Should I put my level 63 adament Heracross in there or a low level pokemon to try to catch them?
You get Yellow Forest by trading the special Pichu over, correct? Man, I wish I had a second DS.
You still gotta trade it over to see the Ilex forest event.

Holy shit is this game annoying me. Is anyone else pissed off at how little Pokemon are available to you before the 5th badge? I'm getting really annoyed because I've seen maybe 10 different Pokemon in the wild so far and I don't like any of them, so I don't want them on my team. I'm currently at 5/6 for my team and that's because I just settled for different pokemon.

My team is currently:

Machop
Staryu
Pidgeotto (I wanted a Fearow, but I could never get Spearow to show up in the damn wild! I gave up after 2 hours.)
Quilava
Haunter

I don't know what I'll be putting in as my 6th. Any suggestions? I was thinking some Thunder Pokemon because right now I'm having a tough time killing any water pokemon. I was thinking Ampharos. Any other ideas?

The change of Gust from a physical to a special attack really, really upset me. Pidgey is fucking terrible in this game, I really do regret not using a Spearow instead.

Amph/Mareep are your only bets for Elec so far, unless you snatch a Pikachu from the walker.

Why the hell does the bitch in the Goldenrod gym get 2 meowths but I cant even get to the road to get one because a damn treeko or some shit is standing in my way!?

I want my Meowth!

EDIT: Seems i just have to finish of this gym. I panicked for not. I'm OK now.

I didn't even notice they made it a special attack. I was wondering why it was so damn weak. I remembered gust as being my best air attack for Pidgey early on in Gold, but it has sucked big time this game.

And does anyone know where to catch Marowak, Heracross (Headbutting trees?), Horsey and Growlithe? I know I'm still pretty early in the game, but I would like to catch these 4 ASAP. They are some of my favorites and will be replacing some of the Pokemon on my team. Marowak>Machamp. Kingdra>Staryu. Arcanine>Typhlosion. And I'll throw Heracross in there somehow.

My girlfriend got her game today. Her shopping places near her house fucking suck because she could only find gold which I have. At least I am getting a totodile for my breeded cyndaquil.

Anyone know a good place to train after the 8th badge? Right now working on an espeon but after than I am going to get right to training. Is there a place I can train with pokemon higher than the ones right outside of blackthorn?
Your best hope is rematches http://serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/rematch.shtml

Or be prepared to grind like nuts. The developers should've made the wild pokemon at slightly higher levels.
This game has the exact same flaw as the original. The wild pokemon are just so low leveled. You don't really get to better level pokemon until you beat Blue.

The best place is in Victory Road. All of the pokemon are in the low 30's. The area in Mt. Mortar, past the waterfall is decent too.

I forget where I got them, but I know I was pretty far in the game when I caught Cubone and Growlithe. Growlithe is exclusive to HeartGold (you probably knew that, just stating it again.) I have Horsea from the Pokewalker. If you PM me your friends code, I will glady send them all your way if you want me to.

Edit: Growlithe can be found on Routes 7, 8, 36, 37, and 48.
