Okay, what do I do now??

There are a few things you can try. The easiest is to get a tompson off ebay and put it in yourself. You can also put in a regular dvd drive. The catch is that you wont be able to play any real xbox games. If you can modded you system you can try puting in a HD, but that can be tricky.
If you buy a product, and that product is faulty because of a part within the product that is known to be faulty, you have an absolute right, under warranty or not, to have that product repaired completely free of charge.
You people don't seem to understand, the Thomspon optical drives were/are not faulty, they performed the way they were intended. Microsoft paid crap for them, and that is what they received.
I don't think I'm entitled to anything for free. I think I'm entitled to quality for $200.
And you got exactly over $200 dollars worth of quality. What did you expect with the cash being spread paper thin across a Main Board, HDD, ODD, GPU and CPU to name the major components.
Oh man.

Thanks for the laugh, I needed that.

I think you should just be glad the Xbox doesn't catch on fire and burn your house down.

OH WAIT (yes I know it's a massive exaggeration on my part)
Heh, the catching on fire part has actually happened...

All in all, you can get a replacement drive on ebay or some other trading forum for very little. Just make sure it is an Xbox drive, or a certain Samsung model which happens to work with Xbox's.

Hey look... it out of warranty and the thing broke. If you don't like it, you should've bought an extended warranty at BB or CC. When you purchase something you've got to know that eventually it will break. In the end its just bad luck for you. If you want to avoid it in the future... again, but those extended warrenties that the sellers provide.

That being the case... not every early adopter is going to get burned. I bought my GCN on launch day, and it has yet to have anything too serious wrong with it... AND it's gotten the most playtime of all my consoles. The moral of the story is... buy Nintendo products ;) (KIDDING!)

So every product you buy should have a warranty for life? Yeah, thats a great buisness sense. Get over it. Stuff breaks. If this was 2-3 months old, sure, be pissed. But since you have a Thompson drive, you prob have a laucnh Xbox that is close to 4 years old. How many hours have you logged on it?

Shit, when Microsoft found out there AC was faulty they sent AC Adapter out for FREE to anyone who sent in there serial number, pretty awesome of them! I have yet to ever see Sony or Nintendo do this and they have been around much longer then Microsofts Xbox.

No, like I said, I've had it for just over a year (bought it brand new when they did the Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Star Wars, and Tetris Worlds bundle), and I've hardly used it. Almost all of my games are on PS2, so my Xbox hasn't received more than about 100 to 150 hours of use. (Is there a way to see how many hours I've logged?) It was not a launch system, in fact it was manufactured in July 2003, more than a year and a half after launch. Let's review:

2-year-old console
1+ year of use intermittently
100-150 estimated hours of use
Console has stayed in the same place the entire time, away from dust

Hence why I'm pissed off. Had I played the console for 4 years for a thousand hours as you implied, sure, the death of the console is to be expected eventually. But I'm not going to "get over" Microsoft's ignorance toward something that breaks so early from a widely-known problem.

But I didn't come here to bitch about Microsoft's lack of quality, I came to ask for advice. And the most useful advice I've gotten is to buy a new Thompson off of eBay. If it doesn't work, I'll just do without an Xbox and curse Bill Gates.

I wish you luck good sir. Hopefully something will work.

Update:

I bought a brand new Thomson drive on eBay for a little under 30 bucks. I take the Xbox apart, install it with no problems (except finding a good Torx set and fumbling with those annoying tiny screws), and power it up. And...the same damn problem. It reads some games perfectly and gives me the same disc error on the same other games. I'm puzzled. If it's not the drive, then WTF is it? It can't be the games; they were brand new, mint condition, they worked until recently, and they still work on my friend's system.

I'm thinking of just auctioning a broken Xbox off on eBay or selling it for 50 bucks to llamma.com. Any more suggestions? Thanks.

The problem has to be the drive. Even though you got a completely new Thompson drive, it's still a Thompson. If you absolutely can't wait until the 360 to play xbox, then get a Samsung drive, which you should be able to find for $50-60 on eBay. If you can wait..then do exactly what you just said: sell it for parts. I myself have been lucky with my Thompson drive so far, but not all the Thompson drives are exactly the same..some are always good, some aren't. Yes it is somewhat Microsoft's fault, but, then again, you've just been plauged with bad luck.

Except it isn't really the cord that is faulty. Replacing the cords was essentially a cheap PR stunt. And I guess the reason you haven't seen Sony or Nintendo do this is because that has not been a particular problem with their consoles.

Wow, it's crazy that Thomsons are shitty right out of the box. Looks like I'll rely on my buddy to play my Xbox games until 360 is out (my PS2 and Cube are more than enough for now anyway). If I need my Xbox for some reason, I'll just buy a Samsung (heh, that and the cash I already spent on a Thomson is more than MS would have charged for a repair...go figure).

Good stuff, thanks for the post, and thanks to all who helped.

Yeah man, what can you do? I just hope there are no issues like this for the 360.

Nothing's perfect and plus the pressure from media/fans makes it worse. That's why I never eat cookies straight out of the oven, I wait a while and then take one for my pleasure.

That's what I did for the PS2 and I got a SCPH-39001 during 1st price drop. Still operating in tip-top shape. Though this principle tends to be good for electronics in general but not for CPUs... Damn locked 2500 Bartons!
