Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

Master list in post 2

Crap, hope my TRU's have a few guides when I check tomorrow. They always give me a little attitude but at least they'll give them to me. I'll try to pick up a few extras for others if I can get any.
Once again, I think the Fort Wayne TRU pulled the guides. I would be interested in trading for a FF X-2 guide. PM me.
my cousin went today and asked the dude working at TRU and they said most of the guides have been OOS for months. The FFX-2 guide they said he hasnt seen that since Before Xmas 2004 when they sent them back... Then they asked about penny guides and they said they usually never have penny cause they are all sent back way before they hit a penny ????????????

they did have Twisted metal 3 for 1.50 game and i think another PS1 game sealed for 1.50

No X-2 guides at my TRU either (Montgomery, AL) but I picked up the collector's ed. when it released so no biggie. Got everything I was after - picked up 2 of each, with plenty left (especially MGS3, they had a ton of those). My store NEVER pulls the guides, the only downside is they have them on these racks where if (when) they get looked through they get pulled down & the spines break. It's not so much a matter of finding the guides you want, but finding them in good shape. I did pretty good tho. :)

I scanned the following that weren't on the list, and all of these rang up full price in case anyone is curious:

Metroid Prime 2
Dawn of Souls
Pikmin 2
so no one has FFX-2 guide? This isnt good
I picked up two today. There are atleast 3 left on the shelf.

Some other cag was in today got one.
I picked up two today. There are atleast 3 left on the shelf.

I am the cag who picked up the FFX-2 today. I also picked up XIII, MGS twin snake
and viewtiful joe 2.
Nice to meet other CAGs in the store.

:D I picked up a few--THUG2, VJ2, Splinter Cell PT, MGS3, MGS TS, and Prince of Persia WW. There were plenty MGS3, MGS TS, VJ 2, and Splinter Cells at the Toys R Us in Queens NY. I only picked up what I needed in case other CAGs went looking.

Sorry you left quickly otherwise I could have point out some other guides...

Plus I have some stashed aside from the last drop just in case people ask about them...

Good to meet you too...you're the first cag that I know I've met. :)

I made it around to 4 Toys r Us stores this afternoon. Three of them had completely cleaned out their guide section already. I managed to get a few MGS3, THUG 2, MK: Deception, 2 VJ 2, and 2 FFX2. Of course, there's a chunk ripped from the front cover of one of the Final Fantasy X2 guides.

Don't even try the Toys R Us stores in Okemos, Westland, and Livonia, MI.

Why do they even bother actually marking these down to a penny if they won't sell them or give you an attitude? Are they just suppoesed to throw them out and not sell them?
Why do they even bother actually marking these down to a penny if they won't sell them or give you an attitude? Are they just suppoesed to throw them out and not sell them?
Yes, actually.
I'm so stashing guides next time. Yesterday I thought I was going to have a good guide buying day because I went there and there was like 6-7 guides on the list. Today, that section was totally cleared out. Nothing but $14.99 guides. Darn you TRU!!
My update... went in today to pick up a Star Ocean... only to find all the guides cleared out... except the ones I had hidden (only 4 MGS3, VJ2, POP2, andXIII)... it was funny, the man working there recognized me from the day before (something to do with having price checks on all the guides on the list since there is no price scanner in my TRU electronics section... ha)... and asked me where I got my info, told him the internet, then asked where I had the guides hidden...

I think having the cover purchase of Star Ocean, plus 4 other 90% off games they just got put out (Twisted Metal 3, Syphon Filter, GT2, and some XB ATV game)... it helped me score the guides, again there were only 4 and no duplicates.. I was not going to try and push my luck

Overall a great TRU experience

The MGS guide is for trade, anyone with an extra Star Ocean guide they wanna unload... PM me

Anyone looking for one of the TRU guides and have one of the Dead or Alive ultimate guides from EB for trade/sell?

Damn what rotten luck. Anyone have any luck at the TRU in San Francisco? I went earlier in the week and they were stocked pretty well about 3-4 copies of MGS 3, twin snakes, viewtiful 2, etc. I even found a FFX-2 but when I go there today, all the penny guides are gone - every single one except a raggedy spider-man.

Just wondering if I was just slow or is the store starting to take out the penny guides. They didn't even have star ocean so I wasted 45 minutes.

Well, I couldn't find FF X-2 or SC: PT, so if anyone has extra of those, i wouldn't mind trading for them. I got most of everything else on the new release list. If you have an extra FF X-2 and missed something else let me know.

Thanks again for the new TRU list. I was able to get most of everything on that list, so if anyone needs anything (I got everything but FFX2 and VJ2), PM me with what you want and what other guides you have for trade. ^_^

At TRU, I got VJ2 x 2 (goes along with the VJ2 for the PS2 for $9.77 @ Microcenter) and THUG. I saw a few MGS:SE and Mortal Kombat: D

I also went to a couple of Gamestops and found the following for $0.01:
Phantom Brave
Halo 2 (Unofficial guide)
Paper Mario x 2

I can cover you on the VJ2 guide, I got a couple extra. Just PM me.

First, big thanks to OP and CAGs. This was one of my biggest scores. Here goes:

Thursday, lunch hour, zoom down to Sunnyvale, CA TRU. Pick up a handful of guides, and ask the mofo behind the counter for a price check. Before he even scans them, he says, 'if they're a penny, i can't sell them to you.' Then, he goes into a lengthy spiel about fines, etc. 'Can i just buy one of each?' i asked. 'No, they'll ring up under my number!' he says. 'Maybe you don't have to ring them up, it's just a penny,' I suggested. 'Well then, they'll be missing!' Well, at this point i just thought 'forget about it, what a 41CK43ad.' He then proceeds to the shelf to take ALL the penny guides down. whatever.

Next, zoom down to Winchester, San Jose, CA TRU. Pick up the same four guides again, and also spots a present for GF's little sister; (hmm...'cover purchase'). Young guy behind counter goes, 'Wow, they're a penny!' 'Yup,' i replied, 'can i buy more?' 'Sure, I should mark these down to a penny!' he says. I go back to the shelf and clean TRU out. Did leave behind 2 copies of MK : Deception because of the poor condition. 'Holy crap! MGS3:SE is a penny?!' he says. 'i guess....,' i replied, 'i'm only buying one, there's two more on the shelf, why don't you pick them up for yourself?' i asked. 'Yeah, i will,' he says, 'a little bit later.' he continues. I pay, then tell him to keep the change for the guides for himself later.

In all 30 guides scored. These below are up for trade with local CAGs in the San Jose (South Bay), CA area.

Viewtiful Joe 2, Brady, 5 copies.
XIII, Brady, 5 copies.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Brady, 9 copies.
Mortal Kombat: Deception, Brady, 6 copies.

please pm, or email me at [email protected] for trades. will look at your list, thanks.

Now is it really necessary to grab 30 guides with multiple copies of up to 9? I'm glad I live at least 2 hrs from U, or else I'd be pretty damn pissed if I found out U grabbed all those guides from the bay. I mean I saw at least 10 copies of MGS 3 today, but how many did I grab? Just two. I also saw at least another 8 copies of MK: Deception, how many did I grab? U guessed it, just two. I hate friggin' hoarders.

That being said, this is the list I scored today, all up for trade:

Ace Combat 5 x 2
MK: Deception x 2
Viewtiful Joe 2 x 2
XIII x 2
MGS 3 x 2
MGS: TTS x 2
POP2: WW x 2

I'm keeping one copy of POP2, the rest are all up for trade, there are PLENTY of those guides left at TRU in my area. Also saw copies of Tony Hawk: Underground 2, SC: PT, and CODs there, might drop by again tomorrow and pick up a few of those, anybody wanna trade me some guides, PM me, mainly looking for RPG guides, Star Ocean and FFX, FFX-2 are top priorities.

I snagged quite a few, though the one I wanted the most (FFX-2), wasn't there. To be fair, it hadn't been in stock for quite some time, so I wasn't magically expecting it to reappear either.

The ones I got was:

MGS3
VJ2
MGS: TS
Burnout 3
FF 1&2: Dawn of Souls
XIII
CoD

The cashier totally thought I was trying to scam them..but thankfully many of the guides already had a 0.01 price tag on them, which is the first time I have seen this TRU do that, so he still ended up giving them to me.

Major thanks for the advance notice on TRU's guide drops! It really helps to get the info in advance like that.

I picked up:

MGS3
FFXI
PoP: WW
Ace Combat 5
THUG2
United Offensive
XIII
MK: Deception

Thankfully, the people at my TRU never give any trouble.

30 guides? 9 of MGS? Now that's just being outright greedy. Way to not share with anyone in your area.

When I picked up the few guides I did yesterday, I left behind many others. I also only picked up guides that I didn't get the last Best Buy clearance. I can only think of two reasons to get more than one copy: trading and preserving a copy with a bound-in poster or something. More than 2 (or 3 at the most) is a bit too much.
More than 2 (or 3 at the most) is a bit too much.
No it's not.

This isn't like clearenced out video games, where you can leave the extra games behind for someone else. Once the employees know about the pennied out guides, they end up in the trash can as soon as they know, or they buy them all for themselves.

I'm friends with the guy who supervises the video game dept, and he told me to take as many as I wanted when I asked. I even said "well, I'll leave some behind for others" and he told me not to worry about it, since they'll go in the garbage by the end of the night, so I might as well take them.

He told me how a few weeks ago he just took stacks upon stacks of guides out to the dumpster. I mean, honestly, maybe 1% of people who buy games know about the pennied out guides, so if you leave them it's not like someone else will buy them, since they are never marked... more often than not, they go in the garbage.

I got about 14 guides... 4 for myself, the rest are trade fodder. The employee thanked me because I was giving them much needed shelf space, because he said he was going to dump all the guides at the end of his shift. So it's either I bought them, or the garbage can got them.

All in all, I got:

Metal Gear Solid 3 x2
Metal Gear: Twin Snakes x2
FFXI x2
Viewtiful Joe 2 x2
XIII x2
Mortal Kombat Deception x3 (this guide is such garbage)

One copy of MGS 3, Twin Snakes, and VJ 2 is for myself, the rest i'll trade to a guy at the flea market for some stuff. I did want an Ace Combat 5 for myself, so I might have to go to a different TRU.
I took the liberty of stashing away a few guides for tomorow...as my TRU is diligent in getting rid of penny guides as soon as possible, I have only scored about 2 or 3 guides total from my TRU... they refused to sell me a stack of about 10 last time...
That's crazy... I don't know why they would deny you the guides when they are just going to throw them in the dumpster anyways.

But yea... as soon as I was leaving, the employee grabbed the guides I didn't get and stashed them under the register, to throw out later.
Did anyone but me notice that gamestop is suddenly actually pulling their penny guides? They never used to bother in the northeast at least.
I've talked to the staff at three different Gamestops and they all pull them as soon as they get the word. One store pulls them first thing in the morning before the store opens and chucks them right then.

Gamestop and EBGames would have no problem clearing out old guides if they pulled and priced them at $1.00 instead of throwing them out.

TRU is the same way around here.

I think it's not a matter of price, but more a matter of shelf space for new guides. Throwing them out creates more shelf space... even if they marked them at a dollar, they'd still have to find a place for them.

wow, you thanks the peeps at cag for hooking you up, and then you hoard a grip of guides

I've pretty much felt that its best to buy extras because of the pulling and dumping (I don't like hoarding per se).

I buy a few extras when I can (also leave some behind). Last time at BB, I swear they threw out the rest as soon as I left. First off, a clerk hassled me which involved a manager. Secondly, I left a lot of guides and some were for crappy games and they were all gone the next day. There should have been some of the crappy ones left.

Plus, if you buy some for trade (again not hoard them all) you may help put them into the hands of CAGers who missed out! Yeah, I know they may have bought them themselves . . . kinda circular.

BTW, CML for guides :) I'd really like a copy of the Metroid Zero Mission guide
Hmmm, Lord of the Rings: The Third Age still rang up regular price for me.
Same here... they had about nine copies of it too.

I have it from BB . . . was full-price at my TRU.

Went back to another toysrus in the NY Westchester area and they had tons of the same guides I had purchased before (MGS 3, THUG2, VJ2). This one had a larger selection than the others as they had a few more for really old games, and they were really packed in and some ruined. I also stopped by a few ebgames and gamestops, but that was a waste of time (not a single find). I won't bother with them next time.

The only time to bother with EB and GS is to hit them the same day the list is posted. It seems that most of the stores pull and dump the same day. Only a couple of managers hold the guides for a couple days just in case someone buys the game and can get the guide for free.

The two TRU's that I stopped by yesterday had a bunch of guides out in the morning. I picked up 9 total (4 at one, 5 at the other). I went back later that night to a store that had previously left guides out for weeks and they were all gone. Probably they pulled them. =( I'm definetely grabbing an extra trade copy first thing now.

Stopped by the TRU in Waterbury, CT today, and they had a bunch of MK: Deception, Viewtiful Joe 2, and MGS 3 guides, but when they rang up a penny, the woman was really snotty and refused to sell them to me, citing that "They have to be sent back to the company" Yeah, I'm sure Brady Games or the TRU Warehouse really wants a stack of old Viewtiful Joe strategy guides

That's what they do in canada (well, 95 cents), at least at best buy, futureshop and EBgames. Best Buy had a huge selection recently of clearanced guides (including steel battalion, and occasionally you run into a skies of arcadia at futureshop). Also recently found a tales of symphonia art book that I got for free, cause the person couldn't ring it up and then noticed the not for resale sign (it had been thrown in with the guides).

The second TRU I checked out was stacked with MGS 3, MK Deception and VJ 2 guides. There was also a second MGS:TS and I think a couple Ace Combat 5's. If anyone is interested in working out a trade for them let me know since I plan on checking back tomorrow since I didn't have enough time to really look through the guides they had.

If that happens, ask to talk to the manager. Another thing to do is to take the guides OUT of the video game section, and to a regular cashier - they have no problem ringing them up since they don't know jack about video games.

I don't know why employees get such an attitude over these guides, since they just go in the garbage anyways. Hell, you're saving them a trip to the dumpster with a huge stack of magazines.

My local TRU didn't have much in the way of recently reduced guides; however, I did finally pick up a copy of the Prince of Persia: Warrior Within guide that none of my Best Buy stores ever seemed to have in stock. :D

No, no, Ur misunderstanding the point. The point is that it's not OK to grab 10 copies of the SAME guide, but grabbing like 2 copies of multiple different guides is ok, but just because there's like 10 copies of the SAME guide that U shouldn't grab them all.

I have a few questions.

1: Are the EB guides that were "Printed from computers" also .01, or is that just listing every known game guide EB has, .01 or not?

2: Does "Best Buy 7-1-04 to 9-2-04?" mean that thye were only available in between that particular time, and are no longer going on?

3: Are all the guides *supposed* to be thrown out by the end of the day the price is lowered?

4: If these places don't have the half inside/half outside dumpsters that push the crap outside, then couldn't you look in the dumpster and pull out some stuff?

And I bet those employees keep the guides they were supposed to "throw out" for themselves.
call of duty united offensive rang up a penny also.
Would you care to tell us where? It is on the EB penny list, was it there or someplace else?
