Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Master list in post 2
Would you care to tell us where? It is on the EB penny list, was it there or someplace else?
tru i bought 2 of them yesterday

WolfPac_Ite - Checking the dumpsters? that crossed my mind for a split second but then I don't think I want the guides that badly.

And I'm pretty sure some employees would take out the guides they want.
Would you care to tell us where? It is on the EB penny list, was it there or someplace else?
ya sorry, meant tru.

anyone have any extra cod: finest hour guides to trade for? Only one i couldnt find.
No, no, Ur misunderstanding the point. The point is that it's not OK to grab 10 copies of the SAME guide, but grabbing like 2 copies of multiple different guides is ok, but just because there's like 10 copies of the SAME guide that U shouldn't grab them all.
Why not?

They end up in the garbage that same day. Only a small small percentage of people know they are pennied out, other than the employees.

The chances of someone else coming along and getting the other guides is very very slim to none, espically if you live in a small town. Like in my story, the TRU employee took all the guides I didn't buy (because I didn't want to break a large bill on them) to throw out at the end of his shift. So the deal ends with me... I imagine it's the same at many other retail locations.

This isn't like buynig a bunch of 4.99 games and hoarding them all. It's not even close. Chances are, whatever guides you leave are getting thrown away or the employees take them for themselves to sell. Enough posts in this thread have confirmed that - "When I went back the next day, all the penny guides were gone".

I don't see how someone, with knowledge 99.5% of people don't have, is criticized for buying 30 guides, with 9 of the same copy, when they will end up in the garbage immediately after?

I guess, just make sure there aren't other CAGs in the same area as you, waiting to get in on the penny guides if you're going to buy a lot of copies.

Anyone know of any relationship between barnes and nobles and gamestop? I picked up rumble roses and the unauthorized halo 2 guide and the manager asked if I worked at a barnes and nobles to know the penny guides. Also, anyone know if B&N or borders discount their guides? I found some old ass guides like pokemon gold and silver, and gta3.

IIRC Barns and Noble owns Gamestop.

I went into a different Kmart today . . . haven't been in it in 6 months. (Looking for Wario Ware GBA passed on it for $10 and haven't seen it since :whistle2:(

Saw some Nintendo guides . . . 10 of Star Fox Adventures and a few of Wario World. So, I grab one of each then noticed a Wind Waker under Wario. I looked for any of the games in stock because I knew what the clerk would say.

Brought them up to the check out . . . How much are these?

"Well, you get them free if you buy the game," he said. "But you don't have any of these games in stock." He checks and then calls the manager. "Today is your lucky day, you can have them for free."

If you see any Nintendo guides at Kmart, persistence may pay off.

All are for trade, and I also have Call of Duty.

so, if there are pennied out gamestop guides, they'll be pennied out @ my barnes and noble? that would be sweet, if it were true...
so, if there are pennied out gamestop guides, they'll be pennied out @ my barnes and noble? that would be sweet, if it were true...
I dunno, go check. I didn't have any luck with the guy today cause I didn't press hard enough. He was just avoiding scanning them. As long as you aren't taking guides from any central MA B&N, I claim those. :D

I checked 2 different TRU's today and the LOTR:TTA guide is still regular price. Going by this and several posts in the last few pages I would say it's clear that TRU does NOT have this guide .01 out. Floormat, if you could remove it from the list, I think that would be the right call.

thanks Roufuss!

let me respond as well. i'm more than willing to trade like-for-like with any local CAGs. i have also traveled to many locations only to walk out empty-handed, on several occasions. it's pretty rare i get a score like this, and i was extremely happy! and more than glad to share, but being judged and accused; this is not the place.

goldendragOn and Nogib,

passing judgement on others without all the information and basing it strictly on your own values is just not your place........(let's just leave that up to GOD)

done

I changed it to ¿? in case it was return of the king or something.
I have a few questions.

1: Are the EB guides that were "Printed from computers" also .01, or is that just listing every known game guide EB has, .01 or not?

2: Does "Best Buy 7-1-04 to 9-2-04?" mean that thye were only available in between that particular time, and are no longer going on?

3: Are all the guides *supposed* to be thrown out by the end of the day the price is lowered?

4: If these places don't have the half inside/half outside dumpsters that push the crap outside, then couldn't you look in the dumpster and pull out some stuff?

And I bet those employees keep the guides they were supposed to "throw out" for themselves.
1 the "eb guides printed from computer" was a list that I managed to acquire when a manager did a search for all .01 guides in the EB Games computer system. She printed them out and I scanned them correcting the ones to be more readable that I was sure of as many were acquardly abreviated.

2 "7-1-04 to 9-2-04" was a time when BB apeared to stop one centing guides. they would ring up aquard prices like 5-55 cents if you could manage an employee to scan it as an employee purchase otherwise they rang up at full price. Most of those guides are now gone and hard to confirm what if anything has changed.

3 "Are all the guides *supposed* to be thrown out by the end of the day the price is lowered? " um varied question... Theoretically yes. Some stores will say they ship them back but finacially that doesnt make sense for stores to waste money shipping stuf back they don't intend to sell. Also 2 or 3 years ago most if not all major publishing companies stopped taking back old magazines for magazines companies to sell as back issues instead giving them a reciept saying of the 500,000 issues ordederd and shelved 400,000 were reported sold and the other 100,000 disposed of.

Knowing this fact I have never found evidence to suggest a reason thet they would spend money to ship somethining anywhere they reported as past selling date and would be disposed of. It just does't make financial snese.

I can't 100% percent confirm this but after 2 years of investigating guides with every source I could acquire this is the best most logical reasoning.

4 yes theoretically but most every location of a EB Gamestop TRU ETC... has shared dumpster or at least so much junk including lunch going into the dumpsters that most often everything is ruined almost instantly. Good luck if you wanna try though.

I have to agree. Hoarding games is one thing, but these are penny guides. I just view this as a fun diversion (and a great way to spend those annoying pennies that accumulate over the course of the week) until the next big sale. Anyway, I bet most people pick up guides for games they don't even have.
passing judgement on others without all the information and basing it strictly on your own values is just not your place.....
Yes it is. You were being downright greedy. We were just calling it like it is. You don't like it, too bad. Best advice is to not be an jerk when it comes to guidebooks. Hoarding is greatly frowned upon and less people will be willing to trade with you knowing those tactics were used to aquire them in the first place. The vast majority of users feel that there is simply no justification for it.

Either way it's a pointless debate that will likely never ever end and I now guess that it's a topic best left out of this thread to keep from crapping on it too much. :)

picked up lotr: third age (sealed), cashier scanned it twice @ the register. it's full price @ 16.99. so please remove from the pennied list. i really thought it would be a penny because i took it to an in-store scanner and it said "item not in stock" like penny guides usually do.

Just so you know, that error appears when you scan the wrong barcode on the back of one of the guides. My TRU also has the scanners where you can check the prices, and I've been through that bit a TON of times. The best thing you can do is cover up the bad UPC symbol with your fingers and scan the other one. The ones at my store are really sensitive, and they'll pick up on the wrong barcode even if you think you got the right one. Regardless, keep in mind that each guide has two barcodes. One will scan and give you the price, the other will scan and give you an error message.

Either way it's a pointless debate that will likely never ever end and I now guess that it's a topic best left out of this thread to keep from crapping on it too much. :)
You're not understanding.

It's either he buys all the guides to trade guide for guide with other CAG's (which is awesome), or the guides he leaves get THROWN IN THE GARBAGE.

He's not hoarding anything, because all the guides will get trashed. Like I mentioned earlier, all the guides I didn't buy (I left about 4 Twin Snakes guides) were getting thrown in the garbage after I left, since the employee told me and grabbed them (since I knew him personally). The only reason he let me buy them was as a personal favor to me.

Would you rather the guides go in the garbage, or he gets a ton of copies and is willing to trade? It's not like he took 30 4.99 copies of Halo 2... he took penny guides that were going to go in the trash.
picked up lotr: third age (sealed), cashier scanned it twice @ the register. it's full price @ 16.99. so please remove from the pennied list. i really thought it would be a penny because i took it to an in-store scanner and it said "item not in stock" like penny guides usually do.
umm was removed yesterday. Changed to ¿? incase it was return of the king that dropped.

Found Viewtiful Joe 2 and Snake Eater at a TRU in Colorado. I took them to someone with a scangun and they scanned. When I went to grab them all, the R-Zone clerk said that I couldn't have any others. He claimed that he would get in big trouble if he sold them. Is this true???

Trading is all well and good, but I'm sure there are a lot of memebers that hunt and come up empty. Hopefully poeple are also willing to sell without a big markup to those who miss out on one they're looking for to use for a game, and not just sit on a huge stash of guides.

Kind of.

The .01 cent is the code that they are old product and should be disposed of... my reasoning is that people will get confused over why some are .01 cents, why some aren't, why they are .01 cents to begin with, is this a sale... I guess alot of employees just want to avoid the hassle.

I think they might get in trouble since the guides are supposed to be disposed of and they are selling them... but I'm really unsure.

What I do now is just find the ones I know are .01, take them out of the r-zone and have a normal cashier scan them. They usually don't care and are oblivious to it.

We're technically not suppose to sell them. They aren't suppose to be rung up through system. I think the procedure these days is we rip off the back cover and our recieving person scans out the number of guides from the system for each skn that didn't sell and makes a note of it. Those covers get shipped back to Prima/Brady/etc as proof of destruction. We supposingly get credit for the ones we don't sell, but that was a bit heresay that someone brought to me so I'm not positive on that one.

My boss is an idiot though and doesn't care. Last time there was a guide drop I specifically asked if he wanted them pulled. He said "no" and told me to sell them if people wanted them. I even pull more guides out to sell from the stockroom...he's the boss, right? It's not my fault if he doesn't listen. :)

One more thing. There is one thing to buying every single guide in a store, no matter what the associate tells you is gonna happen with the guide, there still is no provocation to buy every copy of a guide...example...you don't need anywhere near double digits on *ANY* guide. Some other guy has a trade thread for some guides that he has 20+ of from the last Best Buy drop. That sounds productive, right? If you came into my store, you'd get one copy of each guide max, if you did something like that. A few of each, that's ok...one for yourself and a few for trading.

Good point, the rest of the store is rather oblivious to the R-Zone...some days it feels like I'm in a totally different store. But be warned...some of the cashiers outside the R-Zone work in there occasionally.

I'm not sure if this is true for every TRU, but I know here all the guides are on a rack in the corenr right in front of the register, so if you grabbed any and tried to leave the R-Zone area, they would most likely stop you.

Not only that, I noticed that some of the guides, such as the MGS 3 and MGS: Twin Snakes guides have the security sticker on the inside cover so they'll set off the alarms if you try to take them out of the R-Zone (they forgot to deactivate them when I was there, at least I had my receipt for the 6 cents I paid for my guides on me).

It's the same at my TRU... either the guy is checking someone out or not at the register most of the time.

No tags on my books, either.

This is what I did the other day. There wasn't anyone in the R Zone to ring me up... thankfully there weren't any security tags on the guides.

Seems like you're missing the whole point of there is no justification for it period. You can talk about b.s. like this until you're blue in the face. Fact of the matter is that hoarding is hoarding.

Now, if you want to grab all the penny guides and then literally stand outside the store handing them out to any other CAG who comes by the store for a penny each still, then by all means do it. Otherwise taking them all under the pretence of having "saved them from the garbage" and to have them all "for trading to other CAGs" is pretty f'n weak as you're making a big assumption that everyone who is looking for a particular guide will have something to trade for it. It's a lose-lose situation. You have a stack of guides you can't get rid of and other CAGs weren't able to get what they were looking for. How exactly is someone helping the CAG community by hoarding? They aren't.

Bad news... if you wanted these guides, you better hurry.

Went back to the same TRU to pick up the other copies of the Twin Snakes guide I left for more trade fodder... today all the extra .01 cent guides were gone.

Luckily, as I was getting a 1.50 copy of Twisted Metal 3, my girlfriend spotted an email printout behind the register. It had on it for the "immediate disposal of these books" and she noticed it had Final Fantasy written on it... apparently the email to get rid of the .01 guides has already hit TRU employees. I guess all the guides I didn't "horde" are now in the dumpster.

Just called a different TRU for MGS 3, and was told "Yea, we have alot... want to know the price on it?" The cashier was real clueless on guides and games (I had to explain what a guide book was), so I said "no, no thanks, don't scan it, I'll just come get it tommorrow, thank you!"

If you want the guides, hurry! Time is running out =D With my luck, someone competent will be working at the other store and the guides will be thrown out before the store even opens.

That sucks. There are a ton of MGS 3, MK: Deception and Viewful Joe 2 guides at one of my TRU's. Seems like a waste that they'll all get thrown out, they should at least give them out free to people who buy the game.

This is the very reason that I always hit up Best Buy and TRU the exact day that the guides are supposed to drop. One time I got to Best Buy the morning that they dropped, and there was a girl going around with a type of cart picking stuff up for price changes and rearranging merchandise, and she had already picked up the guides and put them on the cart. I waited until she left the cart unattended for about 10 seconds and ninjaed the ones I wanted out of there, but any later at all and I'd never have gotten them.

There were about 5 more Twin Snakes guides at the one I go to, all in the garbage now.

What a waste of paper.

The reason they don't keep them around to give out to people, is because they don't have the shelf space. The guides at TRU yesterday were a complete mess, tons of old books mixed among the new.

Now it's pretty clean, featuring guides for only the newest games. Looks nice, from a consumer standpoint.

I picked up one copy of each of the following at my local TRU:
Ace Combat 5
Final Fantasy XI Spring 2004 version
MGS: SE
MGS: TS
MK: D
XIII
PoP: WW

They had several of most of those guides, so I'll go back in a week or two and pick up a few for trade.

Wow! There is an amazing amount of ethical discussion here over penny guides!

I can see both sides . . . hoarding is hoarding period but these guides do get tossed.

I say pick up an extra or two leave some behind. I have scored many of my best "penny" guides via trade, so I want CAGers to get extras for trade.

For instance, I have NEVER gotten a penny guide at GS or EB . . . near me, it just doesn't happen. So, if your store had 6 of a given guide and your buddies there will let you have them, I'd say get 3 of it. I just got Fable and Full Spectrum Warrior in the mail . . . gave up X-Men Legends and Ninja Gaiden . . .

In addition, get to know your local CAGers . . . I've done some face-to-face dealings with people and would definitely help out my local buds. I bet most CAGers would (my favorite has been getting to know Bignick . . . we did a even trade of $5 games at CC last summer).

I can see both sides, although it wopuld depend on the store that had the guides as well...

For instance, my local Best Buy will most of the time, leave out Penny Guides until they are sold, that said, I normally will only get two of one title at the most (I had been trading them for 2 bucks credit apiece at a local game store... thats how a picked up games like Mario Golf for mere pennies)... I leave the extras... if a week or so later I happen to go back and see more, I pick them up for CAG trading

That said, the first and LAST time I picked these up from online... it sent some sort of panic into Best Buy where they pulled all the guides they had after I made my purchase

I only got the 4 guides from TRU that I did this time by stashing them away behind some karaoke boxes... they are that anal about tossing them... and it looked good that I purchased 5 other games from them that day as well... Id feel silly as a 30 year old plus man making a 4 cent purchase

Ive got ONE guide total from EB... that was just luck

Gamestops... a few times, last time I scored from them, the penny guides were clearly marked among the other guides... it was wierd b/c they had other copies of the same guides marked regular price... actually scored my first penny guides from them (pre CAG) a copy of Paper Mario

Here's what happen to be before. I try to buy a penny guide and the cashier ask me if there is any more copies. I said no, and he looks for it in the back. He told me to take it because he is going to throwing it away.

Why they don't just mark these down a month before the "disposal date" is beyond me. So infuriating to be so wasteful.

it's funny how TRU throws them out, cause at my Best Buy a few weeks ago, I saw them placing NEW bar codes over the original bar codes for the penny guides and keeping them on shelf. i could have removed the tag and get the guides for a penny if i wanted to

For stores like Best Buy and TRU, videogame strategy guides probably amount to about 0.01% of their sales, so the bottom line is they just don't care. EB and Gamestop on the other hand are a videogame specialty store and stock guides that the major retailers won't have, so I don't understand why they pennify their guides.

POSSIBLE LOOP-HOLE SPOTTED or I'M JUST STUPID!!!!

I was at Best Buy today and noticed that alot of the 1cent guides were shrinkwrapped with the game(goldeneye, lotr 3rd age etc..) but the interesting part was:

The only barcode that could be scanned would be the 1cent guide because they placed the game on top of the guide face up then shrink wrapped them together, so they would have to break the shrink wrap to scan the game.

I didn't have the balls to try this today so i'm just wondering if anyone else tried.

My BB had a couple guides (LOTR) shrinkwrapped but the games weren't included likey they had at your store.

This is probably extreme YMMV, looks like something that your store did on their own to get rid of the penny guides. I was at Best buy yesterday and the Goldeneye guides were still on the shelf, not bundled with the game or anything. Go for it and take it to the cashier, the worst they can do is try and charge you full price for it, and you can just say "Oh, I thought it was cheaper than that, I don't really want it for that price". And/or try buying it with something else so it doesn't look too ridiculous ringing up as a penny.
And don't forget to do the Jedi Mind Trick, i.e. right when the cashier is scanning the game/guide, start talking to him, try a simple "Busy today, huh?", and if you're lucky he'll turn to you and talk, he won't even look at the screen, and fail to notice its rung up as a penny. Damn, I feel like such a Devil Customer just for suggesting this stuff ;)

Man, what a day I had. I went to guy buy about five guides at Toys R Us, and the second they rang up for a penny, the cashier called the assistant manager. It just happened to be my luck that it was an old hag, so of course she said absolutely not. She said that they were "promotional items" and that they couldn't be sold (BS). I get the manager and he tells her to let me get as many as I want, which seemed to piss her off.

So, I made out with (in the past two days):
FFXI
THUG2
PoP2
XIII
MGS3
PKMN CLSM (the hard cover edition by Brady Games)
VJ2
MK: Deception
MGS: TTS

I was really looking for Star Ocean III and FFX-2, but hey, I got some quality stuff. Is it just me, or do all of the Brady Games guides go on sale rather quickly?

Of course if you DID try that, you might want to have a cover purchase... so your total is NOT a few cents... you can always return the other item later... I did that once with the promo Zelda OOT disc, I went ahead and picked up Windwaker at the same time (this was months after it had been released)... returned WW the next day... essentially got the bonus disc for a penny... and to top it off found WW a month later at a pawn shop for 8 bucks

Sorry if this has been posted before, just want to get this info out. I was at the San Bernardino, Ca. Best Buy and they had a whole table full of Ghost Recon 2 guides for a penny. They even had a sign up for it! I'd never seen guides advertised instore for a penny before.

Today was a day with bad and goodl luck. I missed penny guides at a TRU by 20 minutes, though the manager probably wouldn't have let any go. In consolation I stopped at a GameStop and found the Halo 2 Battle Guide. The really helpful guy at the store let me have it for a penny provided I put a deposit down on Destroy All Humans!
