Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

Master list in post 2
First Monday of the month coming up. Can we expect some more Best Buy penny goodness? I don't know if they actually have too many guides left to drop, but some possible candidates might be : Halo 2, GTA San Andreas (PS2 version and/or Xbox & PC version), Medal of Honor European Assault, Destroy all humans, Star wars episode III, and some Pokemon game that they always have guides for. The only other guides I saw at BB were brand new titles like Rainbow six lockdown, X-Men Legends II etc, they're too recent to penny out (even by Best Buy's standards!)
try to check their website on sunday night. Also make a note on which guides are in stock today but gone on monday.

Good idea! as of Sunday afternoon, there are 11 items listed under videogame guides (4 of which are cheat codes/gameshark type stuff). They're only showing brand new release guides like Darkwatch, Madden, NCAA and Rainbow Six Lockdown, they aren't showing any of : Halo 2, Medal of Honor European assault, Destroy all humans, Star Wars episode III, all of which are on the shelves at my local BB. So there may be something going on here...or not, lol.

The Halo 2 Guide hasn't been on the website for a long time.

I would like to note that the Destroy All Humans guide is considered Deleted in their system (had a friend check today) so it might be pennied tommorrow.
Definitely going to try to get the Halo 2 and DAH guides. :D
Yep looks like its worth stopping in BB tomorrow. Go, Devil Customers!

I picked up a GTA: SA (Xbox), MOH: EA, SW: Ep. 3 & R6: Lockdown guides, just in case they went pennied. I'll just go in and get them price adjusted to a penny, and if that doesn't work, I'll return and rebuy 'em. If none of them drop to a penny, I'll just return 'em.

If DAH does go penny, I'd appreciate if someone could score me one, as I could only hit one Best Buy today and they didn't have it at that one. Will happily trade any of the following, or possibly other guides, for it:

DOOM 3 (Xbox)
Devil May Cry 3
Tekken 5
Call Of Duty: Finest Hour
Gran Turismo 4

Good strategy, though I think after only 1 month, Lockdown is too early for a drop (even by Best Buy's standards!) Anyway, do BB drop PC penny guides any more? I noticed they had a PC Sid Meier's Pirates guide, I wouldn't mind picking that up for my Xbox version.

I'm sure the Lockdown guide won't drop, though with BB anything is possible. I was just picking up the guides that were worth something to me, which was anything save the sports guides.
I didn't think BB would price adjust for a penny item.
We'll have to see today. Most of the CS folk at the BB I frequent tend not to blink an eye in these situations.

I just checked the BB.com website, and the MOH: EA guide isn't there, the DAH guide isn't there (which we knew already), and the SW: Ep. 3 guide isn't there. GTA: SA for Xbox is still $16.99 and R6: Lockdown is still $14.99. Darkwatch is still there at $14.99.

I checked all the old guides I suspected to be pennied and was not on their site at my local BB, which includes Destroy All Humans, GTA:SA, NBA 06, Driv3r, Halo 2 and Medal of Honor:EA. None were pennied. Then I go over to the security door-watch dude to ask him about something, and see a bunch of guides laid out on the counter table near him, all with the prices on the labels marked out. He was a new guy so I had to check a little with other people because he wasn't sure, and I wanted to play dumb a little. All the guides were for PC. These are what they had:

$0.01 guides
---
Doom 3
Sid Meiers(s?) Pirates!
Empire 2
GTA:VC
Half-Life 2(!!!)
Enter The Matrix
LoTR:Battle for Middle Earth.

I can't wait for the penny-ing of The Making Of Half-Life guide. My store only has one so I'll need to jump on it when the time comes(I love Half-Life).

I got one of each except for the Doom 3 guide because I thought I already had one, turns out it's for the Xbox and this was PC. Oh well. Happy guide hunting. :)

I also noticed they had this huge DVD display where one side was filled with the new Family Guy Stewie movie. I asked the guy how many they got shipped in and he said they got one shipement already of about 1000... I knew that Family Guy got popular when it hit DVD, but I didn't expect the new Stewie movie to sell as fast as he said(Sold out within two days he said).

anyone from the east coast get any results from BB?

I stopped by my local BB during lunch and did not see any marked down guides. I did see one Star Wars: EP3 ($7.99), a few Full Spectrum Warrior, Halo 2, GTA:SA, Darkwatch, and not much else. :/

Looks like I'll take my guides back to BB today on the way home from work.

I think they had some of those PC guides at the BB I normally go to, and since they're PC guides, they might not get pulled quickly.

We'll see. If none of them are there, oh well.

Wait...Enter the Matrix. You mean the Ps2 game? Or the MMORPG? Thanks though, I could definetly use some of those.

Damn, I thought of checking Half Life 2 but didn't! I hate being out in front of the reports.

I did get 2 copies of Pirates and checked a ton of other guides (console ones) that came up full price. Not only was the GTA SA Xbox guide a no-go but so was the older PS2 one. And they only had one copy of DOH but it was full price.

I did get 2 Hulk preorder packs with a comic book and 2 Sin City promo comics as well.
Wait...Enter the Matrix. You mean the Ps2 game? Or the MMORPG? Thanks though, I could definetly use some of those.
Enter The Matrix = console game for PS2 & XB (& GC?)
The Matrix Online = PC MMORPG

Picked up the only copies of Doom 3, Half Life 2, and Pirates! at the Saint Petersburg Best Buy.

The guides weren't even marked at all with a normal price, so the cashier really didn't bat an eye when they came up at 1 cent. Maybe she thought it was a promotional item, or maybe she just didn't care? No big deal, what's interesting to note is that there was a shelf tag for HL 2 that had the guide at 24.99 (!!!).

The guides themselves are decent, except for Pirates!, it's all black and white and I don't even think there is a map anywhere in it (the only reason I bought it).

Has anyone checked the Morrowind guide? I didn't want to, in fear that it would be a penny and they would snatch my other guides up.
The guides themselves are decent, except for Pirates!, it's all black and white and I don't even think there is a map anywhere in it (the only reason I bought it).
Ask for your penny back! :D I crack myself up...

This round of penny guides is pretty nice, since there are a few that I actually wanted - HL2 and Doom 3(pc). Now I can feel safe trading my xbox version.

Thanks guys. Just picked up Half-life 2 and Pirates for the pc. My local best buy never labels anything correctly. They were all priced $20. And then it took like 15 mins for the guy at the geeksquad to figure out the price. After verifying that it was a penny, I went back and got price checks on a bunch of other guides, (Myst 4, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, etc) and they were all $20.

What I don't understand is how those games which are older then Half-life 2 and Pirates are still priced at $20.

Penny guide scores from the one BB I went to:

Matrix Online (x2)
Pirates (PC) (x2)
Half-Life 2 (PC) (x2)
DOOM 3 (PC)

And the surprise of the night:

Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth

Check the following and they came up regular price:
Morrowind - GOTY Edition
Neverwinter Nights - Hordes Of The Underdark
(one more that I can't remember what it was)
I know it's not the right thread to ask in, but did anyone discover any good price drops on games today?
At Best Buy? no.

Also checked the prices on:

Star Wars Ep. III: either $7.99 or $14.99
Destroy All Humans!: ditto.

Walked out with nothing from there today. I wouldn't mind a HL2 guide just for reading...I'll have to check that out tomorrow.

You know I can't understand for the life of me the logic behind .01 guides sometimes.

Ancient games like Morrowind: GOTY are still $20 guides yet stuff that's been out for what, 3-6 months? That stuff gets pennied.

I so want the GOTY guide but there's no way in hell I'm going to pay $20 for any strategy guide since I've become accostomed to paying nothing for them. A guy at BB today said that while paying .01 for the HL2, Pirates and Empire game that $20 is a helluva deal to get 4 guides.

Apparently they just don't understand the CAG mentality. No guide is worth full price anymore.

Picked up some trade guides from BB latest drop...

God of War (w/ DVD)
Gran Turismo 4
Half-Life 2
Doom 3 (PC and Xbox)
Empire Earth II
Sid Meier's Pirates
GTA: Vice City
Sword of Mana (from EB actually)
Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth
Matrix Online
picked up GTA : Vice city
Matrix Online and another Doom 3 PC and Pirates! All for trade
Is that Vice City the smaller PS2 guide or are we still talking PC guides...?

Cool beans! Whoever found the PC guides markdown deserves a hearty pat on the back (nothing more, because I'm too cheap).

I picked up:
Pirates! game guide
Empire Earth 2 game guide
GTA: Vice City game guide
Half-Life 2 game guide

All were $0.01. I picked up a Coke too so that it wouldn't be as obvious but the girl looked at the total and said "that's not right". She voided the transaction and tried again with the same result. Then she went to Customer Service and they told her it was OK.

The Bridgewater, NJ store had 1 copy of GTA:VC and Empire Earth 2 left (I think I got the last copy of Pirates and HL2).

I really wanted the Doom 3 game guide. If anyone would like to trade the Doom 3 guide for GTA:VA or Empire Earth 2 guides, please let me know. Thanks!
GTA: VC for the PC/Xbox is still coming up $16.99 for me.
I think you're thinking of GTA: SA, which is the only PC & Xbox GTA guide I know about.

That one, yes, is $16.99.
Is the final fantasy art book pennied out anywhere?
Yes . I have a FF art book from either X or the movie , it's hard cover too .

D'OH! I sometimes get my video game intitials/abbreviations mixed.

I didn't even stop to think BB may still have anything related to Vice City. I immediately thought it would be San Andreas.

Foot? Meet mouth.

is the hardback half life 2 a penny?

also checked prices for shadow hearts covenant, baten kaitos, and Y's guides at ebgames and they have not gone down :whistle2:(

the guy behind the counter also gave me a spill about how he couldnt sell me penny guildes and how they send them back to corporate blah blah blah... so I may have to stick to bestbuy :whistle2:(
