Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

Master list in post 2

Heads up:
At my BB (Greenville, NC), the guides were marked on the shelf as .01. Don't know if this will happen at every store, but get 'em while you can. I picked up RE4, Mercs, SW:RC, Jak 3 (sealed), Fight Night 2 and Tekken 5. No KOTOR II (sad).

Picked up the last RE4, Mercenaries and Kotor2.
Got 2 copies of Jak3, DMC3, Xenosaga2, Metal Gear Ac!d, Tekken5, Fight Night2, Pokeman FireRed/LeafGreen, and NFSU2 so if anyone needs an extra of those let me know.

I did well myself, got some of the ones I wanted.

Picked up and extra Devil May Cry 3 guide and XenoSaga 2 guide.

Anyone get an extra Jak III guide they'd like to trade?

A friend locally found these... the cashier flipped out, and called a manager over who told him "You have to buy the game to get these guides for a penny". He even tried to disguise his purchase with other items.

Does anyone know how to respectfully get them to sell these guides?

I don't see why the stores just can't sell the damn guides.

I've never had a problem with my BB that I go to.

I would go to the higher ups, because since it's priced at that, they have to sell it at that, they can't make you buy a game to get the guides.

I wouldn't raise a stink over penny guides. Your best bet might be trying a different cashier at a different time. I've noticed that the disinterested teen/college age girl at the end of her shift or just before her break is your best bet.

Yea... I was a bit shocked when he told me the story. I was even more shocked the cashier called a manager over and just wouldn't sell the guides.

What was even weirder is he said they had at least five of each one left too... I'm going to have both me and my girlfriend grab a stack, and go through two seperate registers with a 4.99 game (which I'll return at a different BB).

This is the weirdest part... he went to the laid back guy with dreadlocks, who called the manager.

I usually wouldn't raise a stink, but these are guides I *really* want and it has angered me that Best Buy used some deceptive, shady tactics on my friend to up their sales.

Just some food for thought for those who so far missed out (it's easy for me to say since I did relatively well but I've been shut out before). This only the first round, at some point TRU and Ebgames will likely drop the same guides so you have at least a couple more shots at it.

It is always the girls that gave me problem, while the guys were looking forward to see me so i can hook them up.

I had that exact situation today. She didn't look happy and I mentioned that she looked like she didn't want to be there. She told me she was supposed to go on break 5 minutes ago. The only thing she said was "wow, those are cheap" then tendered the sale.

My BB has tons of guides, today I got myself Jak 3, Devil May Cry 3, Resident Evil 4, Tekken 5, Xenosaga 2, Metal Gear Acid. They have a lot of each one, there are other penny guides available but I skipped them because I am not interested in those games. BTW, this is the first time I jump on penny guide deal, so I am pretty excited, even I don't have some of the games yet.

I had excellent luck at my BB's, and there's plenty left for others too. The one in Surprise, Arizona has everything except Metal Gear Acid (got the last one) and KOTOR 2. The employee could have cared less about my purchases, so the remaining guides are probably safe from employee hoarding. Lots of DMC 3, and at least 2 of all the other guides. The one in Glendale, Arizona has everything except Jak 3, KOTOR 2, Pokemon, and Metal Gear Acid. Lots and lots of NFSU 2, although the guy that checked me out was going back to get some for himself. Hopefully he only took 1 or 2 of everything.

Both stores still had old sports guides from the last couple of drops too.

I must luck out: I live in a college town, so obviously almost all the workers at these stores are college students. Not only do they not care about any of the discounted merch, they made a bunch of jokes about me "studying up for finals" next week or picking up a few good books to read over the summer, hehe.

There is always an employee on staff at all these stores that doesn't really care, and that's most defintely an understatement. Keep your eyes peeled, make sure no managers check you out, and if all else fails, note the person who won't sell stuff to you and have a friend go in later but have them use a different person and see if it works.

I've just updated my tradelist in my sig. I'm still looking for Final Fantasy X-2 and KOTOR 2 for anyone who may have an extra.

Cashier was shocked they were a penny but decided they were clearance and to let them on through.

My girlfriend went back in to grab some extras for some friends, and she said there was already about two or three guys grabbing all the leftovers and the 4.99 games.

I guess the Clearwater location is dried up, now. I left bunches of Tekken 5 and RE 4, if anyone is interested.

Took a trip to the toysrus near my job in Westchester NY today to see if they still had some guides left for trading. I had already been successfull at picking any guides I wanted without hassle here, but today my cashier was an old woman who proceeded to call the manager when the guides rang a penny. Once the manager got there though, it all went to hell...she said she couldn't sell them and had to send them back and shred most of it. So, the next time you see that your cashier is some old grandma type person, stay away...wait until a guy is at the register or some young high school girl who couldn't care less. I learned my lesson today...although since some guides were in the green tag session, I still walked away with a perfect Soul Calibur 2 (limited edition), and Viewtiful Joe and Halo 1 guides. So, I have MGS3, MGS Acid, Viewtiful Joe, and Halo 1 guides for trade.

Does anyone have Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls or Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and want Metal Gear Ac!d, Tekken 5, Fight Night Round 2, Devil May Cry 3 or Resident Evil 4?

Madison, WI looks to be officially cleaned out. The rack at the East side store is just so empty now without all of the guides there. There is no more than 7 or 8 guides on each of the 4 shelves... it looks sad.

Oh, well.

I took a trip out to the Meriden, CT store today and they not only had a ton of guides, but even had price lables on the shelf advertising the fact that they were only a penny. I got

Tekken 5 x3 (One for me, one for a friend, one for trade)
Star Wars KOTOR 2 x2
Jak 3
Need for Speed Underground 2
and Xenosaga 2 x2

My BB had 3 RE4 guides, but I didn't have RE4 on my penny guide list. I'll head back to BB in about an hour and hope they still have them. If they do I'll pick up one for trade.
I also picked up a few for trade. I'll post what I have latter.

I really don't feel like looking through all sixteen pages in this thread, so can someone please tell me what store(s) generally give the highest trade-in value for game guides?

dont bother because only gamestop takes guides in and they paid like $.50. You are going to be better off selling them here.

its been a pretty good guide week for me, scored most of the BB penny guide titles, then today went by GS and low and behold, a near mint copy of God of War guide with the dvd (unscratched but used)... only 1.80 after discount card applied

Granted, I dont have GOW... yet... but after previewing it during my gamefly 30 day trial, it is on my wants list, but will wait for the drop to under 20 bucks

I previewed GoW during my gamefly 30 day trial too, but the copy I got froze. It's terrible, because I really want to finish the game, but at the same time, I harbor feelings of anger and resent towards it.

My Gamestop's don't take guides anymore.

New TRU guides:
ESPN NBA 2K5 dropped to a penny Wednesday. Posted earlier, but Resident Evil Outbreak drops today(Thursday).

Rhino gives $1.00 trade-in for guides. Not worth it for the trouble of hording imo (and please don't...), but if you have some spares you just can't trade off around here, it's not too bad of a deal. They don't take duplicates, at least not in a single trip.

Only RE Outbreak dropped?

I picked up a single Madden 05 collector's edition guide from a nearby eb. When I took the guide to the checkout the manager almost shit his pants trying so hard to adjust the price from $.01 to 5 bucks (msrp $25). Finally he said I could have it, but not before he made me promise to bring him some trades in.

if anybody cares, here are the guides I have for trade - I missed a ton of older stuff and would probably interested in something on your trade list

goldeneye: rogue agent
mortal kombat: deception

Someone raped the Grand ville MI Best buy and bought every .01 guide.. that's not right 1 type of guide per person you loser.. buying 300 guides at once to sell on ebay is pretty unethical.

Its hard for me to believe there were 300 guides available for a penny at any Best Buy, there may have been only 15-20 at the MOST at mine

...and dont forget some Best Buys WILL pull the guides, which likely is what happened

I saw a dude buying 100 at mine once, no joke. I bet he has stacks and stacks of Rogue Agent guides he can't get rid of lol.

Serves him right.

You speak as though hoarders had morals or ethics....

I'm probably the one to blame -- I got there Tuesday afternoon and took quite a few, but did leave some (I think I bought around 30 -- definitely not 300). Guessing off the of my head that there were at least 10-15 more left (including a bunch of DMC3 and RE4).

Quite a few things were already gone by the time I got there as well (I know there weren't any KOTOR2 guides).

No plans for ebaying them, though -- I'm a TA and I give guides away to students as in incentive to come to office hours (the students seem to like them, although I think I need more giveaways for the non-gamers).

Our department also sponsors a few gaming tournaments each year and I usually bring guides to give out. (They seem to be slightly more popular than the free pens & other official freebies that get passed out)

Yeah that sounds just like my TRU. They always pull all the guides the night before. The Bastards!! Everyone that works in the R-zone is very well informed. The Manager their is pretty cool, but a stickler for following the rules, and he makes sure his workers know what's up. He has let me in on some green tag stuff though. On the last green tag drop, he told me about the XB ATV, PS1 Syphon Filter and Twisted Metal drop and that it wouldn't last more than a couple days as Corporate probably screwed up again. Sure enough a couple days later corporate pulled it.

wow... picked up yet ANOTHER God of War guide used from Gamestop today (promptly picked it up for CAG trading purposes)... still includes the dvd , the front cover has very slight bends on it, but it is in very good shape...

anyone interested? I am looking for Doom 3 of SC:CT

Optical, yeah those were the only guides that dropped this week. If you really want an RE:Outbreak I can probably get one for you.

Went to TRU and they didn't have diddly squat out on the racks.
After searching the entire R Zone I found one Ace Combat 5 guide. When I got to the register I noticed a whole stack of guides behind the counter.
I just politely asked if those were for sale too and the girl said "Yeah, I guess"
So I walked out with:
Ace Combat 5
Viewtiful Joe 2 (x2)
XIII (x2)
Call of Duty: United Offensive (x2)
MGS 3: Snake Eater (x2)
MGS 2: Twin Snakes
ESPN NBA 2K5 (x2)
Final Fantasy XI

I think the cashier didn't normally work back in that department so I may have gotten lucky.
If anyone needs any of the extras I was able to grab let me know.

I am looking for the xenosaga 2 guide. I have quite a few guides from previous penny outs. Check my tradelist in my signature!

Picked up NFS2 Underground, Resident Evil 4, Star Wars Revenge of Sith, Star Wars: Battlefront from BB in Westminister Mall, last night.
its been a pretty good guide week for me, scored most of the BB penny guide titles, then today went by GS and low and behold, a near mint copy of God of War guide with the dvd (unscratched but used)... only 1.80 after discount card applied

Granted, I dont have GOW... yet... but after previewing it during my gamefly 30 day trial, it is on my wants list, but will wait for the drop to under 20 bucks
Is that nationwide price for used God of war guides at GS??
I will be crazy to get one for myself. GOW is just awesome!!!
