Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Thank you
Is that nationwide price for used God of war guides at GS??
I will be crazy to get one for myself. GOW is just awesome!!!
I believe that's the price GS charges for all used guides.

They only take them in for a few cents, if I remember correctly.

.25 to .50 per guide.

I have extra copies of
Resident evil 4 2 of them
Espn 2k5 baseball 5 of them
Metal Gear solid snake eaters 5

I am looking for knight of republic II, Need for sPeed 2 and will take star wars battlefront

ok, i'm confused... you are telling me that some of these guides are going for LITTERALLY .01 (1 american cent)?!

Not refering to the "cent digit" in a full price tag... ie $14.01 right?

Holy fuck! I need to hit up my gamestop today then!!!
ok, i'm confused... you are telling me that some of these guides are going for LITTERALLY .01 (1 american cent)?!
Let's put it this way: a hundred guides would cost a dollar (+tax). If, that is, you could find a hundred pennied out guides.

I made a run through all my local video game chains and they don't have any guides going for these.

I spoke with a good friend at GS and he said they do have them but they aren't allowed to sell to customers.... they are suppose to take 'em out back and destroy them.

wtf is wrong w/ them?! They can always bundle it w/ the game as a free gift! I don't get how they can just destroy the guides!
Is this $0.01 guide deal still on and when is it going to end?
Once they are marked down to a penny they stay that way, if you can find any of the mentioned guides they should ring up that way still. I actually found some this time at Best Buy from the last .01 mark down they had.
What's the best way to ship guides?
I personally like media mail w/delivery confirmation. It's a little slower than priority but not by much (a couple of days) and much cheaper. DC is only .55 on MM and is worth every penny.

Padded envelopes are good too, because the postal service can be a little rough with your mail sometimes.
Padded envelopes are good too, because the postal service can be a little rough with your mail sometimes.
Thanks, I forgot to mention that. Spookyhurst uses good envelopes, too, I can confirm that since I've done 2 trades w/her previously. Trade w/her and thank me later.

Also, you can reuse a lot of bubble envelopes to save $. Hey, we're CAGs.:)

I just sent of my first guides in a trade a few days ago. Where do you guys get good padded envelopes? I went to post office and didn't think those would be good enough. I was worried about them being banged up.

I was sending the GTA: SA guide and a pokemon guide and didn't think I could fit both. I didn't want to get two envelopes, so I got a box from home. I don't think this guy needs to worry about them getting beat up by the post office. I packed the guides pretty well.

I want to give you guys a tip. If you're looking to be real cheap, you can get boxes for free. One way is to drive behind some stores and look for cardboard only dumpsters. You can find plenty of boxes this way. I also would suggest recycling places. The Scott's supermarkets in town have these semi trailers in their parking lot that you can drive up and put your recyling in. I know my family's gotten boxes from them before for storage. The only problem is that it can be hard to find small ones.

Would anyone like to trade a Resident Evil Outbreak guide for a NFSU 2 guide (sans poster)? PM me, folks!

[ Yes, I know this isn't the trade forum... I figured this would be more appropriate than a very specific post in the trade forum, though. If I'm wrong, please delete this! ]

I keep all the padded envelopes that come in the mail and just reuse them if they are in good shape. All of my EB orders give me tons of good envelopes for games but are too small for guides. In fact, often an EB order costs $2-5 and I think "if nothing else I have an evelope"

I did the ultimate stupid thing . . . I traded away my Metroid Prime 2 guide . . . AAAAHHHHHH!

I thought I had an extra but after tearing the house apart . . . no luck. Oh well, easy come . . . easy go.

Anyone have a MP2 guide for trade??? CML

I've got a couple extra (don't ask) sitting around somewhere. I'd be interested in trading for a Star Wars: Bounty Hunter or Manhunt guide.

Just let me know. Thanks.

CAGers always come through!

I found a copy of Mario 64 (official Nintendo) guide for $5 at Half Price Books (I get 10% off Teachers discount) so $4.50. I decided it was worth it because I was just thinking it would be good to have a few weeks ago.

Found a buncha of Jak 3 guides at a BB when I went to pick up the new Coldplay cd. But when I got to the checkout it came up $14.99! Did they forget to discount it? Or do I have to show them or print out the webpage that it is for a penny? No big deal to get this guide, but I would like a few options on what I can do next time.

take the guide back and go elsewhere in the store. ask an employee or 2 for a price check to confirm your supicion. Then go up to the service desk and say I purchased this a few days ago and it has since dropped in price I just wanted t get the differance please. They should then either scan and give you the dif but if not say umm I just had bill and tom check the price and they both said it came up one cent {this is obviously more of a set up to them and they will smell it but at least giv you something to stand on. Good luck either way. Oh and if its sealed in shrinkwrap then it should be like a sealed game return and no problem, At least I dont see how they can refuse and unopened item within 30 days.

Good luck

Quick question about game guides... how often do the lists update? By this I mean, how often do stores like Best Buy and EB decide to drop guides down to a penny? Every couple of weeks, a month, etc? Or is it just completely random when they decide to do this?

random but on average every 2 months at each store. when you see a stores shelves overflowing with many different guides a drop is likely soon but no set formula.

This is kind of humorous. I went to my local best buy to check for some guides to day and they had 1 cent prices right on the shelf. So obviously there was nothing left :(

Best Buy have been dropping 'em like crazy lately, its been once a month at least.

did you notice a relabelled UPC bar code sticker on the guide? my best buy actually had one on a penny guide. i found it funny since i could have removed the sticker adn get it at a penny
Best Buy have been dropping 'em like crazy lately, its been once a month at least.
Not really, more like every 2 months.

I was in TRU and saw a whole bunch of penny guides. Grabbed one of each to have them scanned. The guy behind the counter points to the $14.99 on the back and says

"This is how much they are"

So I ask him to scan them anyway, and he sighs, and they all scan for full price. He kind of smirks at me, and says "Full price"

So I said I heard a rumor that they were a penny, and he says "No, they're not supposed to sell them for a penny"

So I don't know what's going on with that. I can understand some stores not selling the guides for a penny and instead trashing them, but I wonder how they scanned full price. I thought the UPC was universal in the system.

Next time try taking them on your own to one of the in-store price scanners first. Even if they're in the "R-Zone" area, it's not like they have security tags on them, so you should be able to walk to another area that has a scanner.

I don't know the rules of TRU, and how anything works there, but I can only think of a few possible reasons.

1. He lied to you.
2. The UPC isn't universal.
3. They reprogrammed the computer to recognize it as $14.99
4. The whole store is run by a stupid man that doesn't know what he is doing.

Again, I have no idea how the system works, but those are the only possible explanations I can come up with.

Not always true! My local TRU does put their damn R-Zone security tags on their guide books.
did you notice a relabelled UPC bar code sticker on the guide? my best buy actually had one on a penny guide. i found it funny since i could have removed the sticker adn get it at a penny
No there wasn't any new sticker on them at all.

Nogib, your right they do put tags on the books, one of mines put them on popular ones like Halo 2 and GTA: san andreas.
Is there any way you can get these guides at book stores likes borders, barnes and noble, etc?
Pay ~$15?

Went to TRU in Lake Charles today

Picked up:

MGS3 guide (regular version)
Prince of Persia: WW
MK: Deception (and I'll second that comment - it is shit)
Crimson Skies
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
Soul Calibur II

CS and SCII actually rang up $0.00 since they are still part of the greentag sale.

I can confirm that the original RE: Outbreak guide has dropped to a penny. Also, I found the Prima Pokemon Colusseum for a penny too.

I was paranoid that they'd tell me I couldn't buy them. As I checking out a new employee completely points out that they are scanning a penny. I almost run out of the store as if I was on fire, but the lady training her says "Yep, some of the guides are on sale. Great deal too".
If he wants it that bad...why not?
I wasn't questioning the idea of paying ~$15 per guide, He asked if there was a way to get these guides from a book store, and "pay ~$15" was the only answer I could come up with. The question mark was meant to ask "Other than paying ~$15, what did you have in mind?", but I realize that tone and inflection can be hard/impossible to convey in writing.

Oh I was also going to suggest using the bar code converter site to print out your own barcode, bring it in to Toy's R Us and scan it to see if the guide is a penny. That way you won't have to bring the security tagged guides out of the R Zone. The upc data base can be found here http://www.upcdatabase.com/ and the numbers to the upc can probably be found on amazon or barnes and noble websites.

The TRU I went to also had a ton of guides that are a penny at Best Buy (I didn't bother scanning them, obviously) but full price at TRU. I wonder if they will drop and when.
