Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Thank you

Master list in post 2

I picked up Star Wars Episode 3 and two Medal of Honor Euporean Assault. The MOH: EA are still sealed in plastic. All are available for trade. [Also Destroy All Humans, Empire Earth 2, GTA: Vice City, Half Life 2)

Looking for R&C 1, R&C 2, Jak 2, Jak 3, Rise of Nations, Rome Total War, or Sims 2 for trade.

Wow . . . guides dropped last Mon and it took me a whole week to get it straight.

Today I got GTASA PS2 version kinda beat up and MOH EA.

Anyone looking for Half Life2 or the above?

Snagged the one and only GTA:SA PS2 guide at my BB today. Got the feeling that the pulled the wrong version as the Xbox guide is nowhere to be found there anymore.
I tried Driv3r and it came up full price.
Yeah, turns out it is full price. Ya know, I have one copy of the guide at home, but I don't know where it came from...I can't imagine I paid more than a cent for it. I think I may have been mixing up Killzone with Driv3r, as the covers remind me of each other, I think (not at home to look at them right now).

The BB i went to later today looks like it was pillaged already(either by a CAG or BB employees) - there were random Xbox GTa's scattered about, both in PC and Console guide sections, but no PS2 versions.

Just snagged Morrowind: game of the Year edition at my local Software Etc. for a penny.

I just the prices on Kingdom Hearts, FFX and Star Ocean and all were full.

Anyone know if there was a EB drop today? I was just in my local one, and one of the guys was carrying a stack of guides to the back. When I asked him if he was pulling them, he said no, they were just clearing room because they had too many of the same guides.

That may be true, the guys there are usually pretty nice. Then again, I get the impression that someone (DM?) is putting some pressure on local stores selling .01 guides, so who knows.

Anyone know what the deal is with Best Buy shrinkwrapping certain guides? I ask because the only GTA SA guides I could get looked like ass, with bent covers, and were obviously well read-through, whereas every copy of MOH EA (and Halo 2) was shrinkwrapped. I've previously gotten Forza and Jade Empire guides that were sealed too, but others like Doom 3, Goldeneye, and Call of Duty were not shrinked...

Well me being the cheap ass that I am, I went back to the local Software Etc. I brought in a huge stack of magazines, and asked for price checks. The guy looked at me and said, "you know about this store, don't you". I smiled and replied that a friend told me about huge price discounts.

I managed to get" Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth (Prima Version with nice colors!), Armies of Exigo, Lords of EverQuests (around 400 pages), Freedom Force vs Third Reich, and Farcry (color also)

I don't know how the Driv3r guide has made it through so many penny drops considering it wasn't a hot item to begin with.

My BB has 39, yes 39, copies of Halo 2 guide. That one seems to be pretty hot too....

i checked the san andreas guide today at best buy that says "for xbox and pc" on it. It was a penny, too. I thought it was only the ps2 guide. Can anyone else confirm this, or is this just an isolated incident? anyhoo, i didn't buy it and got the ps2 guide (in the computer section) since the xbox/pc cover was "more" beat up.

The xbox guide is still listed as full price on the website. Usually when a guide is pennied out it doesnt show up online shows up as a penny. Don't know, someone might want to double check.

I'll check tomorrow at work. I didn't notice an Xbox/PC or PS2 label the other day so I figured there was only one version, wheres the label located?

well, i asked the employee to check, then he got surprised and asked the manager. the manager sounded flustered and said, it's probably a penny cuz the cover is torn (the guide was pretty beat up)...then he came back and grabbed all the rest of em and took em to the back (not sure if they were beat up and not sure if they were the xbox/pc guides, too).

Trust me, i didn't want to alert anyone about em, but the manager just popped up out of nowhere! arrrgg!

btw, it says "ps2" on one guide and for "xbox and pc" on another guide. it's not really a label. it's printed on the front cover at the bottom in the rockstar font, i think.

EDIT: Its still confirmed ps2 guide is .01. btw, city of heroes and guild wars guide are still regular price.

can anyone confirm this for the xbox/pc guide, my bb has a bunch left i think :)

I checked Halo 2, Driv3r and GTA:SA for Xbox at the Best Buy in Batavia on Randall Road. All regular price.

The kicker is that I had SW:Ep. III and MOH:EA in hand, both rang up for 0.01, but the "media manager" intercepted me before the cashier could ring me up and proclaimed very loudly that if they ring up for a penny, they can't be sold. I swear she was out of breath by the time she reached the checkout area.

I asked her why, and her explanation included reference to an e-mail from corporate within the past two weeks that said they could no longer sell penny guides, or anything for a penny, and that all pennied merchandise (including promotional items) needed to be sent back to the manufacturer. I asked about the PS2 "Power Mouse" they had hanging on a display marked for 1 cent. She said they sent them back to the warehouse and the warehouse sent them back telling this BB to sell them.

I have been identified by the media manager by sight as a devil customer. Next time I try for a penny guide, I'll ask her about that if she stops me again.

I checked the GTA: San Andreas for the XBOX/PC and it still rung up 16.99.

Fourth that PC/Xbox price.

Guild Wars also rang up full price.

My BB has stupid employees and still some copies of Pirates and a copy of DAH cause they don't really care.

The thing is at TRU: The .01 merchandise is either sent back to the manufacturer or destroyed (which makes no sense to me), and the store/company gets back full wholesale credit for said merchandise. Breaking even is a whole lot better than letting it go out the door for a penny, even for a big company. Small amounts really add up.

As for the "Power Mouse," the manufacturer probably had no use for any of the components and/or didn't want to recycle it, so they offered full credit back for them, and ust let the store keep the merchandise to dispose of it.

It just really bugs me that this single "media manager" does her best to spoil my fun and the fun is spoiled only at this single Best Buy. All the other Best Buys sell the penny merch without question and several even put 1-cent price tags on the guides. Only this single BB with this group of managers trots out the "corporate line" that they can't sell penny guides.

Welcome to the world of the penny guide my friend. This battle has been going on since the days of our fore-fathers. (not really but you get the idea)

If I missed anything let me know. Will add to main list later with the EB and GS drops. Thanks.

Today I picked up Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 for PC for myself and a friend of mine at the Great Northern BB. Nothing else was there except for one copy of MoH:EA.

Might want to mark the Pirates!, Empire Earth 2, GTA: VC and LOTR: BfME as PC guides, just to remind people they're PC guides.

I went to 3 different Best Buys this week which I've known for a fact have all had atleast 10+ San Andreas guys as of last week, and they were all gone as of yesterday, as were all the other penny guides. I've never had problems getting them at these stores in the past, I guess they just got wise and started pulling them off the shelves.

I have one GTA SA guide to trade, however the cover is all beat up. Let me know if you're interested, and if so, what guides you have to offer...

Picked up a couple extra GTA:SA guides today if people want them, CML (link in sig). They're in mint condition. I took the nicest ones, but there were like 40 on the shelf.

Does anyone have Xenosaga II guide for sale?
Really appreciate if you can help a CAG out.
Also, I wont mind a GTASA (PS2) or Jak 3 guide as well.

thanks.

I have all those guides (except GTASA) on my trade list. Send me a PM.

Picked up GTA: SA guide at BestBuy. Anyone want to trade for Jak 3, Jak 2, R&C1 or R&C2, SSX3, or Rise of Nations (PC), Sims 2 (PC), Age of Mythology (PC)?

Extra guides also available: GTA:VC, HL2, Empire Earth 2, Medal of Honor:EA (in plastic wrap), Star Wars Ep3

There was also another copy of the GTA:SA PS2 guide at the Best Buy in Bridgewater, NJ although it wasn't in great condition. It was in the PC games section with the PC/XBOX versions.

Scored Destroy All Humans... I let the guide sit there for like two weeks, I wasn't interested in it, but I figured what the hell, might as well grab it since it's still there.

Cashier flipped out a little seeing a .01 guide... even scanned the guide TWICE to make sure he didn't scan the wrong barcode. I told him this was normal, he said "shouldn't they have pulled this" and I told him "well, if they did, that guide has been there for about two weeks after the price changed to .01, so I don't think they care", and luckily he just let it slide and told me he might get one for himself.

The Saint Petersburg Best Buy, as of closing tonight (Saturday), still has copies of Destroy All Humans, GTA: San Andreas (ps2 version), and Half Life 2. I didn't pick any up for any other CAG's because I don't have time to ship them out for the next week or two.

Wow, going to check out best buy for hl2 and GTASA later today. The best buys around here never pull the penny guides so most of them sould still be on the shelves.

Which Best Buys do you hit? The ones I go to are hit or miss. With one in particular being very difficult now.

Gamestop marked down these to a penny...

Killer 7
Fantasy Football Handbook 2005
Mega Man Battle Network 4 Red Sun and Blue Moon
Shining Tears
Mega Man X Command Mission
Coded Arms
Brother in Arms: Road to Hill 30
Arc the Lad: End of Darkness
*NEW* Dead to Rights II
*NEW* Unreal Championship 2

Hopefully you can find them as the opening manager is supposed to ring them through the register and destroy them that day, but if they don't, its a score for you.
