Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Master list in post 2

That's what I was wondering, I was like "I have people I can trade with, and only need 1 copy of each guide" but they wouldn't budge.

He did say they let employees take them home if they want. I'm dead serious. I saw at least 10 MGS Acid, 6 Jak 3, 4 Xenosaga II, 5 Tekken's, 10 NFSU2, and like 7 KOTOR II's. There were a whole grip of Fight Night Rd 2, Mercenaries, and DMC 3 guides there.
Considering they toss them anyways, why don't they just get rid of them, maybe like a limit of 1 guide per person per title. That'll get rid of there mass inventory and it will also bring us cheapass gamers into the store. What's the point of getting rid of them when they can be put to good use.
Well as much as I don't like it and I try to pick up as many different penny guides as I can, I can understand Best Buy/Guide makers (Brady/Prima) position. They can't be giving guides away for free cause then people (like I do) would wait and never actually buy a $15 guide if they could wait 2 months and get it for free. I think a better policy would do do what every other product does and go 75% off, 50% off, 25% off and so on or $15 then to $10 and then to $5 and then thrown out. But Best Buy does not do it cause it wants to, it their obligation to the publisher
Was at a Best Buy earlier with a friend, and we saw a whole crap load of the guides sitting on a table in the back room. We asked an employee if we could look at them (there was tons of the most recent pennied out guides), and he said yes, but we couldn't buy any. They were scheduled for destruction or to be bundled with games. I asked why we couldn't buy them, and he said "some people sell them on eBay"

Damn hoarders!!
My blockbuster is always throwing away bags of new guides, magazines, dvd cases etc. I once asked for one and they said they have to throw them away. At that same time a employee was taking a handful to his car.

this is pretty cool, but I do have one question...

Aren't these "guides" out-dated when sites like gamefaqs.com came out which allowed users to publish their own walk-throughs for games? I personally haven't used a guide in so many years thanks to the internet, so i'm just wondering how these companies are able to compete?

Is it for collection purposes? Pretty pictures? Easier to understand? I'm kind of confused :)

Thanks,
Vpr

i personally like gamefaqs, but for some games i really do just want a book guide (star ocean 3, disgaea, phantom brave, etc). also i have some issues with people who write the guides on gamefaqs having horrible spelling errors through out the guide.

For me, it's collection purposes, pretty pictures, easier to understand - PLUS - more info/charts & maps, more accurate information, and easier to have on hand while playing.

Gamefaqs is nice for a quick push if you're stuck, but from my experience it's unreliable at times, and sometimes difficult to find the information you're looking for. I'd much rather have a guide.

that makes sense.... I have a personal rule that I won't use any sort of cheat codes and/or guide for the first run through a game unless i'm really really stuck in which case I just look up that one part in a walkthrough, so I guess that makes the difference...

Good info there - Thanks for filling me in.

-Vpr

if i come across a guide of a game i own and under 1 dollar i'll buy it. I like gamefaqs, but i perfer the guide being next to me rahter than looking at my monitor then at my tv.

Haha, I used to be that employee. ^_~

There is no reason why they can't give them to you. And those cases, we used to throw garbage bags out full of them every couple weeks. Why they don't give them away or even sell them for like $0.10 or something each is beyond me. Blockbuster is a strange beast.

PS: If anyone has a X-Men Legends guide, I would love to trade for it! ^_~

Hey guys, I was at best buy the other day and saw guides for Morrowind game of the year edition. was this ever pennied out? that thing is really old. i was in a rush and it was super busy and i couldnt find anyone to ask.

they also still had a GTA V ice City guide, but it was smaller looking than the other guides.

I have tried for the Morrowind GOTY guide several times, taken it up to the register and it has always been $19.99 to as low as $14.99. Don't know why it won't budge. I think the GTA VC guide used to be pennied out, the version I saw was always smaller.

Everyso often when I'm in BB I will grab some older guides and take em up from for a price scan - you never know.

Yea, I used to do the same thing, but my gaming time has become more scarce while the number of games I want to play has increased. ;) Don't get me wrong, I don't sit & follow a walkthrough all the way through an RPG, but I do like to have the guide on hand to reference occasionally. I'm playing SMT:Nocturne right now, and I honestly don't see how anyone finishes it without the guide. I'm at the end, over 60 hours logged (but I'd put my playtime over 70 hours due to deaths), and the final dungeons are ridiculously frustrating. Even using the guide, they take forever to get through. I'm pretty sure without it I would have given up on this game a while back & moved on to something else.

Yeah, I'm also patiently waiting for the Morrowind guide to penny out.

In regards to guides over faqs, I agree that I would normally never purchase a guide since you get the same, if not better information from a faq online. However, I have come across some guides that are quite good and useful (such as Soul Calibur 2, most guides for Metal Gear Solid games) though there are also very bad guides other there (MK: Deception comes to mind). It is nice to have the guide handy when you play with the maps and stuff; probably unlike a true gaming purist since I have no time to playthrough a game again (I don't even have time to play the games I own once) I have no qualms about using a guide/faq as I play if I get stuck in the slightest during play. I've also noticed that the Bradygames guides as a whole tend to be better than the Prima guides; maybe that's just me though.

The Morrowind guide may never penny out. It's almost impossible to find anyways. I'm thinking of getting it just for that reason. The GOTY edition seems like you'd have to have it just because the game with the two expansion packs is so damn big.
The GOTY edition seems like you'd have to have it just because the game with the two expansion packs is so damn big.
Morrowind was pretty big long before the GOTY edition was released. If you really take the time and effort to explore the original game, you won't need the expansion paks anyway.

I use guides a lot with rpg's, but try only to only use them to get items and hidden things. But I've become so obsessive about finding every little thing in a game that I've even reset the system and gone back to a save I made an hour ago, just to get a little worthless herb that I forgot in a chest.

I was talking to an EBGames employee that said the Morrowind Guide was pennied out for a short time. But, the price went back up.

As of today, it's still reg. price at Best Buy. Hit one on a whim and found the Tekken 5 guide tagged at 0.01. They also had "The Incredibles" GBA pack for 0.01, but it was OOS.

Some nice finds today at EB -- picked up .Hack 4 ($0.01) and a Tales of Symphonia art book (free)!

I was pretty surprised to find the art book considering how long the game has been out.

I found the Paper Mario:TTYD guide @ a GS today but the employee gave me a line of BS about not being able to sell it to me since it rang up as $0.01. No matter what I said he wouldn't budge and probably took it home himself.
Anyone else able to confirm the Paper Mario penny guide?
I work at GS and yes it is pennied at GS.
Anyone else able to confirm the Paper Mario penny guide?
Yeah, but wasn't that a few months ago???

If so, finding one now would be extremely lucky.

Well, lucky, unless they refuse to sell it to you.

I found two of the Paper Mario guides at GS. The girl there gave them to me for free...I guess she didn't want to waste her time ringing them up.

Depending on the gamestop I either get them for free or a penny. I think its just thats what they're supposed to do, it just depends on if they know that or not.

Hey Kuros could you please inform us when we have a have a drop at Gamestop. My local connection has become frayed with changing employee's and such and I don't think we have anyone else here who has volunteered to represent Gamestop. Thank you for your time and you consideration.

I'll try. :)

Well, I don't think I'm gonna be able to print out the pennied guides, due to the fact I can't sort by price.

I do know that Star Wars Galaxies guide and Madden 05 guide pennied today.

Where at?

I saw Madden listed on the OP but not sure where you got it from.

I just picked up Ninja Gaiden (XB) and RE:Outbreak today. I must have missed them on my previous trip to TRU.

Gamestop.
Picked up Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Metroid Prime from EB today.
Picked up FF: CC today. Was told that only it and some Nintendo Power mags were pennied out.

EB is fast becoming my store of choice.

My local EB always rips penny guides off the shelves as soon as the price changes occur. I've never found a penny guide at my EB.

You can ask if they have any left.

The guy at my EB helps me get pennied guides. :)

I'm sure this has been posted, but I will for my own health. I got the Tekken 5 strategy guide for .01 yesterday at BB.

Yeah, it's been a penny for awhile now.

Agreed, I hate EB for penny guides. They always are dicks about them to me.

I have the exact opposite experience. My local EB's have been a gold mine for penny guides lately.

I am wondering the same. Does anyone know what magazines have been pennied.

Off topic: Anyone know what magazines were pennied at Toys R Us?

Got back from a trip to Va where alot of the Best Buys still had planty of the penny guides in stock, including many from the older wave of penny releases... probably ended up with about 25 or so guides. Took as many as I could to a local game exchange, along with some crappy dvds (recieved 10 bucks credit for a 2002 Nascar dvd I got from the dollar tree) and a couple old sports titles... walked out with my own sega master system w/4 games, a half life guide, a game gear game, Goldeneye RA for the GCN... only paid about 2 bucks out of pocket

On the same topic, have noticed my Best Buy had more enny guides in stock today when I went there, only about 3 but they hadnt been there before, one of them LOTR, wasnt even in stock when these price reductions first happened... in other words... keep checking bak from time to time

If anyone is looking for a NFL Street 2 guide, PM me. I accidently picked up two of these the other day. I was also able to pick up DOA:U, MK: Deception, Def Jam:FFNY, Fight Night :R2, and Star Wars:BF, but I am keeping those.
