Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. I was at Best Buy today and there was a NEW batch of penny guides including...

The Urbz
Star Fox Assault
Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
SPLINTER CELL CHAOS THEORY
JADE EMPIRE

There might be others, but that is all I saw. I've got a two SC:CT's and 3 Jade Empires for Trade or Sale, along with 1 Minish Cap, 1 Star Fox Assault, and 1 Xenosaga 2.

I've also got some other older penny guides and used guide for Trade or Sale, including a used Halo 2 guide, a Madden 05 Guide, a Tekken 5 guide and a sealed (although the wrapping is scuffed up all over the place) Jak 3 guide.

I'm primarily looking for Bujingai or Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls, but I'd probably trade for any other guides I don't have, so I'll look at lists, otherwise I would be willing to sell them (usually I charge $4 which includes Media Mail shipping)

Is this for real or are you just yanking our leg?

Seems a little quick for BB to have pennied out guides so soon after the last round (fight night rd2, RE4, etc)... Did you scan before buying or was it posted as 1-cent? YMMV perhaps?

Damn, more BB goodness already! I'm on my way. It seems that BB usually drops 7 or 8 guides at a time, so I'm gonna guess there'll be a few more. Possible candidates if anyone wants to scan them - Brothers in Arms, Madden 2005, Call of duty, Halo 2(???), GTA San Andreas (PS2 version?)

It does seem a little quick. But I just checked the BB website and none of those guides he listed are listed on the site (neither is Halo 2 guide). HMM....well I am going to go check it out anyway.

the only problem with scanning them is sometimes the clerk takes them away and say they have to destroy them... that's what happned to me one time with Paper Mario.

To see if this fresh news flash is legit, maybe I'll try to scan one guide that's supposed to be pennied out today (like Jade Empire) and then another that's probably not (Lego Star Wars) to cut down on any suspicion with the BB clerks.

Good idea. But first you could grab extras of the guides you want, put them on a shelf somewhere else, and then get some 'test' guides scanned. If/when the employee takes them away from you and then starts taking them off the shelf, you can grab your secret stash and check out. Go, devil customers!
 
I picked up Jade Empire guides from 2 different BB's for trading purposes so I'm sure this is good everywhere. The first BB had stuff marked as 1 cent too.

i'd still like to get a little confirmation on these new penny guides (scan from the OP's reciept?)... i was hoping to stay at home for the 4th but it's hard to pass up on these guides since i own most of those games.

Nope, it's legit. I picked up a couple of copies of SF:A, Urbz, Minish Cap and SC:CT

No Jade Empire though. :(

I didn't get my reciept though, so I can't scan it.

i'm heading out to BB right now... but any other guides that are a penny besides the ones that were just newly listed (please tell me Forza and Midnight Club are on this list too)? I guess I'll pick up those 5 guides and ask to scan a few others while I'm there.

Ah, Madden too huh. Figures, with Madden 06 just around the corner. So, just these six then? (Don't want to come home from BB only to discover 2 or 3 more added to the list!)

How come I can go to Best Buy a few days ago, and see ALL these guides on the shelves in plentiful amount, but the day they get pennied out, the guide section is magically reorganized and all these guides are missing?

The Saint Petersburg, FL store has NONE of the books listed, which honestly dosen't surprise me. I'll have to make a drive to one of the other stores.

Best Buy closes at 6 pm today, I'll be there tommorrow morning at a different store asap to grab some guides.
 
The San Francisco Best Buy store doesn't have ANY of the listed penny guides. This has been the same for the last three times I went to check that day the guides were posted as a penny. The only out-of-ordinary guide I saw that wasn't either Halo 2, Brothers in Arms, GTA: SA Xbox-PC, GTA: SA PS2, or one of the usual ones was a old and worn out GTA: VC guide, but didn't check the price. I am concluding that either someone hoarded the entire library of them, or the employees are taking them out once they see that its a penny.
 
I almost came home empty-handed too. NONE of the guides were on display on the rack when I got there, first time this has ever happened, I guess my BB finally got the memo about penny guides, there had previously been about 30 Urbz and Maddens sitting there for months, gathering dust. I did think to check the PC guide section also (which is on the other side of the store), and I found one Chaos Theory, nice and shrinkwrapped. Oh well its the only guide I actually wanted for myself so I won't complain too much...
 
crap... they always do this on a holiday when I am entertaining and can't make it out of the house... hoping to find my SC:CT and Jade guides tomorrow...

was hoping doom 3 would be part of the mix... well maybe next time

Don't worry, last time I waited 3 or 4 days to go to Best Buy and found plenty of penny guides.

It all depends on the store and what the employees do with them.

It is something to worry about . . . one must move quickly these days. BB is getting better at pulling them.

One day could make a big difference.
 
Its wierd... sometimes they pull them... sometimes not... last time they seemed to keep getting extras in (to their advantage as I picked up the LOTR game AND guide my last trip there...)

The last drop was also on a holiday.... and luckily I did snag a few guides the next day... I am REALLY wanting the SC guide... I didlike having to switch back and forth in the game to the map, would just like to have the maps beside me where I can see them... as for the strategy iteself, if this guide is anything like the Pandora Tomorrow one, Ill end up doing my own thing in alot of situations
 
The two of the BB near me had all of the penny guides pulled already, except Jade Empire, as the JE guides where not with the other guides. If anyone is looking for the Jade Empire Guide, CMTL.

Same here.. I was just up near a Best Buy that's 25 minutes away, I was ironically enough hitting the CC across the street (which I got my awesome haul at).

Going to have make the drive up there again tommorrow, it seems.
 
I went to BB and they had small labels advertising them as a penny. I found 6 of the 7 new penny guides... I even found an old Splinter Cell: Pandora Tommorow (PS2/GC) laying around... I couldn't find Zelda: Minish Cap though.

I thought since Jade Empire, Star Fox, SC:CT were dropped t0 $0.01 (and they're all recent releases) there might be a chance some other guides were pennied out but they all scanned out to full price. Here are the ones I checked but were still full price (I'm waiting to pounce on these):

Forza
Brothers in Arms
Driv3R
GTA Vice City
GTA: SA (PS2)
 
What's weird is that at the local Best Buy where they pull them way early, I found one Tekken 5 guide labeled .01

Seems weird they'd label that for sale, but pull all the current ones. Probably employees grabbing them.

Woo! New penny guides. Time to fight Bb and try to get some. Probably nobody got any since today is July 4th. I wonder if this means that tomorrow they will update the site and put them as .01 cent since normally they do that on Mondays, but todya was a holiday.

Edit: Since I haven't been keeping up to date with this thread as mcuh as I used to, does anyone mind maybe giving me a quick summary of the last few .01/reduced priced guides?
 
were these guides available online? the pages seem to be gone. best buy must be getting better with these penny guides
 
RPG guides...love getting those, especially when I need the Jade empire one. Lets all hope they still have all of them tomorrow.
 
Does anyone here sometimes pick up guides for games they dont have and end up intrigued to the point that you have to go out and buy the game, just by thumbing through the guide...

I did last week with the LOTR: TA game...

Jade Empire is an excellent game. It relies on more hand-to-hand combat and is somewhat shorter than KOTOR, but it's great fun while it lasts. I sure do hope it reachs Platinum Hits status sometime soon.

You can find them when you search for the game, such as Jade Empire, though when you click on the link to the guide, you end up getting a "Page can't be found" error message. They've yanked the page, though they haven't yanked the links from the search.

Thanks for the heads up. Went back to purchase Lumines which is on sale this week for 29.99, plus the $5.00 off coupon. I browsed through the guide section and picked up the last Jade Empire guide, and one of tons of Madden 2005 guides left. There were some guides that magically appear from the last drop (e.g. Fight Night round 2), and some really old ones like Vice City. Workers must've put them back.
 
oh crap... they actually PULLED the guides this time... was really hoping for a SC:CT... I will have to depend on the generosity of CAGS to get this guide

So, even if they are marked $16 bucks they are still a penny? if that's the case...my best buy near me has 6 jade empires. and is pokemon leafgreen and zelda: four swords a penny?
 
The cashier at mine was amazed they were a penny(like usual). I was able to get all except the Urbz(only had one of each). They had a ton of Four Swords, but I forgot to check the price. Hopefully, it wasn't a penny or I'll be making a trip back.
 
I'm guessing the clerks cleared the shelves at my local BB because they had nothing on clearance at one store and just a handful of guides at another. I did find one Jade Empire for myself, so I'm quite happy about it. :D
 
The past two guide drops have not been kind to me. Nothing left at my location...obviously the employees pulled the guides, since everything so neatly arranged. :(
 
Here's a tip: Ask the employees nicely about the guides!

I went to the U.S 19 Best Buy in Clearwater as soon as they opened... shelves were empty. This location originally had 15 Minish Cap guides, and the shelves were really neat, so I know they had been pulled.

My girlfriend took a Minish Cap game, and very nicely asked the employee if they had the guide for this game, and she was confused since they just had at least 15 guides yesterday.

Employee looked on the shelf, and finally asked his manager, who responded that they were all in the back. My girlfriend asked very nicely if she could purchase some, and the manager seemed hesitant at first and told her "Alright, one guide only though, since they are slated to be destroyed apparently".

Girlfriend very nicely asked her about Jade Empire and Splinter Cell... the lady sent another employee back, who brought out both the guides. Girlfriend asked this new employee "Do you think I can get a few extras?" and the employee told her this was the last copy of each, and did she need any others, to which she said no.

The funny thing is, the guides were marked .01, but were pulled and were not supposed to be on the floor. I only managed to get 1 of the guides I listed (which I'm keeping, no PM's please) and I felt extremely lucky to do that.

This location last time had at least 6 of every penny guide on the shelf - Best Buy is starting to get smart, I think. I saw Four Swords there, but I doubt it's pennied out, because I believe they would have pulled that as well. Maybe in the next drop it will go.

So to anyone in Tampa Bay - the Saint Petersburg and U.S 19 Best Buy's have pulled their stock completely, you might get lucky like I did however.

I can certainly agree with point #1 above. I ended up giving one of the reps a penny guide (I think it was a while in the past, months ago) and he ended up getting me a few of them out of the back. You might not get more than one, though you still might get the one you want. ;)

The second point is more amusing, since it furthers the devil customer game. :D

Same here on the last set of guides I ordered on BB.com. :D

I did like that I didn't get charged sales tax on most penny guide purchases. :D I think I might've paid $0.01 tax on $0.07 worth of guides, maybe not even then.
