These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value: $0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

If I buy a used copy of a game that requires an online pass for multiplayer, will it come with an online pass?
If you purchase a used title published by either Sony or WB you get an online pass from GS on your receipt. That's also why the used copies are $55 instead of $48 when the MSRP is $60.

No GS issued passes of games published by EA, THQ, etc. On those titles you're totally dependent on the previous owner not using the code.

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

man, i went in there today to try and get the $60 for my wii towards preordering the wii u, and they were only going to give me $25 because there was a missing piece that covers the gamecube controller ports. i told them to sod off. the damn thing works just fine, they'll just try to screw people any way they can.

Good question. Guess you can't put it toward a pre-order you can't do. I did the $25 pre-order on the Deluxe, but also want to trade-in my extra PS3 for $150. I asked if I already have a pre-order if I could get the hardware deal later (since the promo runs until 9/23). He said if need be he'll just cancel the first pre-order and make a new one to get it to apply.

Any GS employees want to chime in here?

Those promos are weird sometimes. It could do one of 3 things:

  • Add it automatically
  • Require a coupon code from our marketing book
  • Require the correct item to be added for the promotion to activate.

Just be careful about cancelling a pre-order since we've already taken out the WiiU Deluxe pre-order.

Usually hardware bonuses are automatic. But like I said if it requires a coupon code, they need to scan the marketing book. If it specifies that you need to pre-order to activate, then you'd lose out since you already have it and might require manager override (if possible). So it's possible YMMV.

I wouldn't let them cancel your pre-order. At the very least make sure they can put in a new pre-order first, then if that's confirmed AND you didn't lose your spot in line, then they can cancel the other one.

Or, you can just do a second pre-order, then cancel it and put the credit on the first pre-order the next day or something. Probably easier that way.

I went to trade in uncharted for vita and it was showing on the little screen at the register for $4 credit. However, I did not have the case, because I bought it used without one, so it is highly possible the employee keyed it in as a different uncharted game. In any case, it may be something to keep in mind.

I'll be taking a DS3 in tomorrow - it will surely drop then ;).

I'm going ask about the hardware Wii U promo trade-in also. Obviously I don't want them messing with my existing preorder in any way since I was the first one at the store to preorder (the Deluxe of course). But I'd like to buy a new 3DS XL, take it home and transfer everything, then trade the original 3DS in for the $100 towards the Wii U. But all of that depends on whether or not they can pull that off - so I'd have to get some sort of guarantee about that ahead of time.

It seems like someone here would know if it is automatic or requires a scan from the promo book (as opposed to requiring an actual preorder on the same transaction).

If it's in good shape and no stickers on it sell that on Amazon. You won't believe what you can get for it. I sold 2 wired 360 guitars from GH 2 for $45 each, and that was in February. The market hasn't gone down for them either.

This. I sold a GH2 one a few weeks back for about $40 and the wireless GH3 for about $50. About two months ago I sold two Band Hero/GH 5 guitars for $60 each.

you think that little piece on the side is equivalent to a hood or the lid on a trunk? you really are an idiot. that would be like if the top of the console, or bottom, were completely exposed. missing that little flapping lid (which pops off so damn easily, and is not integral in any way for the system to work) is more akin to missing a vanity mirror or an ashtray.

question for the sane people:

since i went in yesterday to trade it in for the wii-u promo, but got gypped, can i go back in today (my mother in law gave me her lid, so i just popped it on there) and do the trade in for the wii-u even though i did my pre-order yesterday?

I think the better question is if you bought a Wii from GS and it was missing the piece would you let it slide? I would think not.

the faceplate isnt quite the same thing but most likely as long as the system functions just fine i wouldnt have a problem with it and to my knowledge the 360 can function without a faceplate just fine.

again we are talking about a stupid piece of plastic on the wii that more often than not gets in the way when you try and plug in gamecube controllers and is just easier to rip off. this piece of plastic affects the system in no way at all.

this is a used console buddy not a brand freakin new one.

onto a different subject:

i have a pre-order at one place for the regular version, and a pre-order for the deluxe somewhere else. i'm thinking about cancelling the regular version, but that's the place where i did the promotional trade in. will i still keep the bonus credit if i cancel the pre-order?

Yes, there's no way for GS to force you to give back your bonus credit. Although once they see it on the receipt, they might give you a hard time canceling the trade-in. I would bring my receipt in for the deluxe version of the Wii U just to prove that you still have a preorder.
 
Took a bunch of stuff to Gamestop to put towards my Wii U preorder, which I'd already put $25 down on the day before. When it came time for them to trade in my old, complete 360, according to the dumbass behind the counter, "The $90 credit trade-in towards Wii U promotion only applies if I hadn't already put $25 cash on the system..." They wanted to give me $70 bucks, as opposed to the $90 plus whatever my PowerUp Rewards would've helped.

I try to be a nice guy, but I almost lost my shit on this dude. I swear to Christ, the incompetence!!!

I will NEVER forgive Amazon.com for not selling this system.

oh yeah. they make it a huge pain. worst case scenario, do another pre-order, trade your stuff in, then cancel one of them.

i'm actually considering keeping both of my pre-orders, then maybe selling one if there is a market for them this holiday season.

Didnt want to, but looks like I'll be trading in one of my Gears 360 controllers. Havent used the thing since i got the console last year anyway.

Also still trying to decide whether or not to trade in my Wii.....
 
I think what I'll do is call the store and find out when the manager is there. He's a pretty intelligent guy and we get along well. Plus, he has the authority to override whatever issues arise. I'm still so fucking pissed, though.

On the stuff I did trade, I think I did well. Like 18 games, a mix of old and newish, and got $144 because I told them to apply it to preorders of Black Ops 2 and Dishonored which netted me an additional 30%. I'll cancel those preorders and apply it all to the Wii U in a week or so.

Once I get this console trade straightened out, I shouldn't owe very much towards the system.
 
I think there is a 30% bonus promo towards Wii U stuff starting monday. I tried to trade in some Wiimotes, and the plus attachment. My friend is the manager at that store, and looked up some codes. He said to come back monday since the system wouldn't add the 30% today.

They pretty much told me I couldn't add to my existing preorder and would have to cancel my Deluxe and order a basic if I wanted the hardware trade-in promo. Yeah, like that's gonna happen. I know I could preorder the other one and cancel later but now they are aware of what I want to do so that probably wouldn't fly.

However, the 3DS Xl trade-in promo is still active so I may just do that. But if the system transfer screws up there will be hell to pay. They claim others have done it using the WiFi from the Moe's next door. We'll see about that... If that does work, then fine - I don't have to mess with the Wii U preorder at all and can upgrade my 3DS. I wasn't interested in doing that before because I wanted the more portable system and was glad I had that when I was at PAX since I had it in my pocket the whole time. But now I'm playing Tales of the Abyss on the couch at home and the bigger screen would be much nicer to have.

At least I was able to trade in an old PS3 controller for $42 towards Pikmin 3. The base value of $30 is still good today (9/15). I might take another in tomorrow for NSMB 2 when I do the 3DS upgrade.

Argh, I shouldn't have read this thread. I thought the 3DS XL trade-in promo was over. Now I have to decide if it's worth $100+ to upgrade to the XL.

i hope that's true. the reason i'm concerned is because the bonus credit was only given if you traded it in towards the pre-order of a wii-u. if i cancel the pre-order i'd hate for them to say that they're reducing the amount of my trade-in.
 
They cannot do that, once you complete the trade-in it is done. They may threaten to ban you from trading in (happened to me last week lol).
 
Great, because two employees have lied to me (i.e. incompetence in knowing their own promos and store policies) I have a $5 deposit on Borderlands 2, a fully paid off preorder of Borderlands 2 at another store, and then $10 (two $5 30% trade ins). I was also hassled for 10 minutes by an employee when I wanted to cancel an AC3 preorder I made for the 30% as well. I am so sick of this 30% promo, it is not as easy to just cancel your preorders. Its a relentless sales push on the customer to keep it when they know I'm going to cancel it, why even try, his manager wasn't even around to hear him try. I'm done with GS until another better trade in promo happens, this 30% one sucks IMO. Not worth the harassment to cancel the preorder when you're fully within your rights to do so.

The first Borderlands 2 I will definitely pick up and return to another GS as that employee that gave me the preorder is always patient when I come in with weird promos and want to do 3 transactions. The other two, CANCELED!
