One gamer kills another over virtual sword.

Thats sad, but I would also be mad if someone sold something I worked hard to get in a MMO if I played them. However, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't kill someone over a virtual item.

That's like some guy coming into your house and stealing something. I mean yeah it's virtual, just 0's and 1's but hey if you devote your time into something virutal or not you bet your ass there will be hell to pay if you try to steal it. I mean, I wouldn't go as far as stabing/killing someone, but would I open a can-o-woop ass if i knew the guy that did it? hell yes.
You're right, those are two old stories.
*shrug* well i told ya so.
Man I thought this was going to be a Halo 2 story at first...

Hm.... I'd be pissed if someone tried to shortchange me $500...

If they won the sword jointly, why wouldn't they split the money?

450pounds is about $1000...

Greed, that's why.
That's just F'ed up.

doesnt anybody find the whole 500 dollars for an item in a video game, kind of weird, i mean this thing better cook me breakfast while one shot killing the damn best of em

I'm surprised this story didnt somehow involve Everquest players....

I also find the idea of buying ingame items as weird...actually I think of it as being pathetic. What's even worse is there are people in foreign countries whose sole job is to procure items in online games for sale on the internet (Real Money Traders). They stake out areas in the game and just repeatedly kill monsters in the area for drops...and do nothing else...except maybe harass other people who are just there to play the game. Just plain creepy...anyone who has played an online MMORPG knows about these boils on the butt of humanity.

"Qiu Chengwei, 41, repeatedly stabbed Zhu Caoyuan after discovering that Zhu had sold the "dragon sabre" for 7,200 yuan (£464)."

 I'd be pissed as hell too if I wasn't in on that near-one thousand bucks.

Sentenced to Death
A court in China has sentenced an online gamer to death for the real-life murder of a fellow player after a confrontation over a virtual weapon.
But the court suspended the death sentence for two years and good behaviour might ultimately reduce the sentence from death to 15 years.

Zhu sold the virtual "dragon sabre" used in the online game "Legend of Mir III" after Qiu had only lent it to him.
Qiu reported the loss to police in February, but they said the computer sabre wasn't a real thing protected by law.
He then demanded the money Zhu had earned from the sale, 7,200 yuan, or about $1,000, but couldn't wait for payment. He attacked Zhu in his home, stabbing him repeatedly in an early morning assault.
Qiu turned himself in to police, saying he did not intend to kill Zhu.

The only thing I ever did to hurt someone over a game, was my friend and I were playing ESPN 2K5. It was a world series, he won it in game 6 and I threw the controller on the ground it bounced up and hit him the face. Never thought about stabbing him. I should call him over and have another world series for money. yes?

7200 yuan is $869.93 at current exchange rates. That might not seem like a lofty sum but you gotta consider quality of living as well. I hear that a monthly salary for an average worker in china is about 1200 yuan so if you notice, that's 6 months work right there. It'd be like making 60k a year and someone sold something you had for 30k. That's quite a bit of money... I dunno if that's worth killing over but I'd be understandably pissed as well.
