"Yale Senior Undergoes Multiple Self-Induced Miscarriages In The Name Of Art"

http://jezebel.com/380897/yale-seni...-self+induced-miscarriages-in-the-name-of-art
Yale University senior Aliza Shvarts, left, swears she's not trying to "scandalize anyone." Her art is definitely not designed purely for "shock value,". Even so, it's hard to know what to call Shvarts' senior thesis, "a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself 'as often as possible' while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages." Yup, in an attempt to start a dialogue about art and its relationship to the body, Shvarts is displaying plastic sheeting reportedly smeared with the uterine blood and tissue from her various miscarriages and projecting video of herself miscarrying into a bathtub. "I believe strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity," Shvarts tells the Yale Daily News. "I think that I'm creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be." The thing is, Shvarts' art isn't so much commenting on politics or ideologies but her own need for attention.

We've all met young men and women like Aliza Shvarts: They come from relatively happy, upper-middle-class families, and are so desperate to be "edgy" and "crazy" that they perform a series of stunts — whether through drug experimentation, sexual exploration, or bad performance art — to differentiate themselves from their hopelessly bourgie peers and parents. The problem with Shvarts' little art project, however, is that her need to rebel has potentially big ramifications outside her ivory tower of academia. (One assumes that Shvarts used, at least in part, the abortifacient RU-486, a prescription-only drug that some politicians want added to the list of Schedule I controlled substances.) Plus, conservative bloggers are already up in arms and using Aliza's capriciousness to support their anti-abortion agendas. (At 9:00am this morning Shvarts' name had 53 hits on Google; as of 11:52am, it had 291.) And though the Buckley School valedictorian claims that she wants her piece to be a medium for "politics and ideologies," it's not like she's shedding light on an obscure subject. People debate the ethics of abortion constantly, and possibly harming your body by forcing it to miscarry repeatedly? Yeah, that's not helping the discourse.

Molly Clark-Barol, a Yale student and commenter on the YDH's website, sums up Shvarts's egocentrism better than I could: "Congratulations, Aliza Shvarts '08: you have single-handedly trivialized not only an entire generation and a half's fight to gain and retain the right to choose, through harassment and against massive odds, but also history of women's struggles, not only politically, but with the emotional, moral, and spiritual impacts of the choice to terminate a pregnancy. You also spit upon every couple who has tried, and failed, sometimes repeatedly, to have children. it is the emotional impact of these struggles, emotional impact that you shamelessly exploit, not explore, in your senior project."

It's hard to believe how horrible people can get. The quote in the last paragraph of the article pretty much sums it up perfectly. What a dumb cunt this woman is.

EDIT: Here is some guy who thinks it's fake: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/warner-todd-huston/2008/04/17/yale-students-abortion-art-claim-scam

:puke:

I can see her at a job interview now.

Interviewer: "So tell me what was your biggest acomplishment during your college years?"

Her: "Well there was this time I did bankly blank.....with my blank......and shit happened.....I made it into a work of art and repeated the whole shit over again!"

:puke:

Dear God, I hope this is fake.

What happened to the good old days when kids who wanted attention cut their wrists while listening to Linkin Park?

~HotShotX

i'd laugh if she couldn't get pregnant anymore. I would also laugh if she did get pregnant, had the kid, and the kid killed her when it was like 3.

she needs to take it a step further and abort herself...

What a way to fuck up your own body as well, the bitch doesn't deserve to reproduce if this is the callous way she treats her body and the process of creating life.

She stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages. The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and function of a woman’s body.

Well there's no ambiguity that you're a stupid bitch, lady.

This passes for artistic expression these days? Even fake, it's right up there with the guy letting a dog starve to death in a museum, or the guy putting vials of his semen in an exhibit.

Gotta love Yale. I hope they put that on their list of distinguished accomplishments and enlighten the incoming class as to what exactly goes on there.

~HotShotX
What happened to the good old days when these types of jokes were actually funnny? (Linkin Park isn't wrist cutting music)

All they really have to say is "We graduated Dubya (and the guy who hosed your chances of defeating him in 2004)"

What's wrong with this? After all, the pro-abortion people tell me that it's just a fetus. So who cares how many abortions she has or simulates. Remember it's just a worthless fetus that she is (fictionally) discarding and it's her right to choose what she does with her body! ;)
I think that this work of art simply empowers women and I congratulate Yale on developing another fine student.

I give your trolling 3/10 You forgot to mention the delicious placenta sandwiches with a side of fetus chips.

To me, it doesn't really change anything that this is fake. I mean, I'm glad she didn't randomly purge a bunch of fetuses from her body and put them on display. But just spreading this joke as news really trivializes the female reproductive system and makes light of something many women find traumatic.

Do you think she made this a news story or the media looking for their next salacious story pounced on it. Media loves this sort of crap and instead of checking these important details called facts that real reporters do, they just jumped the gun a published it.

I was disgusted at first when I thought it was real, but who cares now. People are really flipping out over art, which is kinda pathetic. If you have a problem with it, ignore it.

Well Msut77, since you're an expert on trolling, I must hold your assessment in high regard: it seems that I have failed in my attempt to troll
Well Msut77, since you're an expert on trolling
Oh please if anything the little lady in the op makes everyone on the internets look like a piker.

Well, I knew it was BS pretty much the moment I read "... she artificially inseminated herself 'as often as possible' " (I mean, artificial insemination isn't exactly something you can do with a kit in your bathroom...) so it's hard for me to have an opinion about this, though people getting mad about art (pardon: "art") seems like it might be the point, somewhat.

I think i posted this in the other thread but, crazy ass art students. Bitch must be unstable to make something like this up.

First of all...

I am really tired of abstract bullshit being considered art. What Michaelangelo, Picasso, and Renoir did was art. Throwing feces on a wall IS NOT ART. Running on stage with Soy Bomb written on your body IS NOT ART. It's called being an attention whore.

Second...

I loved college, but there are really too many students and instructors who think they are more important in the world than they actually are. They are so disjointed from reality they don't realize how much of a tool they are. They speak directly from the ass trying to be philosophical and introspective and it is just tedious.

Just a nit - what you're describing is not abstract art, I believe it's labeled "performance art". And some is better then others - For example this isn't bad IMO:

I happen to like some abstract art (Rothko in particular)

I meant abstract things in general being considered art, whether it be a thought, a conflake shaped like the Virgin Mary, or whatever. I really should have worded my post better.

I don't like most performance art, but some can be somewhat interesting like Blue Man Group. I still think art, like beatuy is n the eye of the beholder.
Distasteful.
Yeah. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's her body, and she can do whatever she wants with it (assuming that this is real).
She should get busted for illegally using prescription drugs though.

Heres a little bit of abstract-ness in that vain for ya :
can%20you%20see%20jesus.jpg

See how long it takes to spot Jesus...?

But (god what a bad way to go back on topic after that heh), to stay on topic, if I sent my daughter to school and she did that, not only would I not pay anything more, but MAKE her pay me back. Not for the sake of tasteless "art", but for wasting a perfectly good Yale education to end up doing something that stupid as a senior project

No. No, no, no, no, no. Art is merely the expression of ideas through some medium. The only thing that makes some expression art is the intent of the creator. That's it.

Holy shit HumanSnatcher, I hadn't seen that before and it just redeemed the thread. Somebody tell me it's photoshopped because Jesus appearing in a dog's(?) asshole is just too good for this world.
