[OOS Online]Coleco Sonic Handheld on clearance for $20 at Target.com

D. Monic

CAGiversary!
Update: It's now OOS online. Many Target stores still have them, but they're ringing up at full price. Keep price checking them in store; hopefully, they'll go on clearance in-store soon.

You can still use the Target.com link at the bottom of this post and then click the "Find it at a Target store" button to check for availability in your area.

----------------------

This deal is mainly for collectors and Sega/Sonic fans. The Coleco Sonic handheld system is now on clearance for $20 at Target.com. It used to be $50. Basically, this handheld has 20 built-in Sega Master System/Game Gear games. What's really funny is that this thing even has TV-out capabilities! Yes, Sony couldn't include that on the $200 PSP, but this little-known budget portable has it.

Games included are:
- Sonic Drift 2
- Sonic Triple Trouble
- Alex Kidd in High-Tech World
- Alex Kidd in Miracle World
- Altered Beast
- Assault City
- Astro Warrior
- Aztec Adventure
- Bomber Raid
- Columns
- Ecco II: The Tides of Time
- Fantasy Zone
- Fantasy Zone: The Maze
- Global Defense
- Kung Fu Kid
- The Ninja
- Penguin Land
- Quartet
- Snail Maze
- Super Columns

You can buy the system either at Target.com or Amazon.com (via Target of course) using the links below.

If you want more information about the system, click here for a review. I also recommend reading the reviews at the Amazon link.

I called the store, and they said they could not honor the web price, you would think they would because it says "in stores " but a little farther down the page it says "prices may vary by store and location" Oh well !
I almost bought this because it looks neat, but then realized I probably wouldn't buy these games if they were on a $20 cartridge for DS or psp.
yeah me too, this is just gonna add more clutter to my place
shipping is too much. i would have bought it if it was 3-4 dollars cheaper. thanx OP.
It's $2 dollars off if you use the code on the first page.

Brought it down to $26.48 for me, so I bit. I'm a CAG, but I'm not gonna worry about an extra dollar or two. :)

So tempting...if it's the 16-bit (Genesis) version of the games, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

But I'm a sucker for all things Sega, plus hardware is always good as collector's item. So B&M Target still sells it for $50? May as well save some gas and time and buy it online, even though the shipping is ridiculous (probably because it's counted as an electronic item).

gulag picture radio assures me this thing is backlit. Good as I hated the original GBA's RELFECTIVE LCD.

Target.com had 51 left yesterday. Now they are at 21 left.

It is also available at frys.com, but branded as the Playpal for $29.99 plus shipping
here

And at Tigerdirect.com for $62.99 plus shipping

$60 shipped on eBay

I was hoping it would be the same price in-store as well...damn. Ive been looking for this FOREVER and apparently the store 2 miles from me has them instock...Ill do a pricecheck on it tomorrow and hide it somewhere.

Though you can hardly complain for something that costs $20, I caught this picture on Amazon and the screen size is about the same as the Game Boy Micro. I'd imagine it is no way as sharp and clear as the Micro's screen so the games might be a little tough to see.
^^^ That last picture makes it look very small especially the screen
As far as I can tell:

Micro-----2 inch
Coleco----2.4 inch
GBA SP---2.9 inch
DS---------3 inch

Come on, its $25 and has Sonic, Alexx Kidd, Columns and Fantasy Zone.

Here is a thread on this at Sega 16, looks like they caught on the new price.

I just got mine. This thing is amazing! Its essentially a perfect, portable SMS!

Thanks very much TC. This item was well worth the price. Sega fans take note.

That's what the Game Gear was, but it could actually play SMS games with the proper adapter.
Damn. Looks like I'll have to go B&M to get one.
All reports have been that they are still scanning full price at B&M
All reports have been that they are still scanning full price at B&M
And some Targets don't appear to have them at all. Was at two Targets yesterday, and I couldn't find any.

Yeah, but the Game Gear is a huge brick compare to this, plus the GG needs 6 AA batteries.

I have a Game Gear and a Master System, but I went ahead and ordered it anyway. Only thing I wish for is that it says "Sega" instead of "Coleco" below the screen.

I bought two at my local store yesterday. I was exhausted and did not realize they rang up full price. The CS gal printed the description off the website using the gift registry computer. I brought them back to my other local store, told the guy they rang up at the wrong price, showed him all the paperwork and he adjusted the price for me!

I was very happy because retailers who won't match their own website's price are BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But how do you feel about the Master System :p
Who knows, he 'refers' SNES over NES.

It doesn't look like Target's online store is following the b&m if they have Odama for $30! :( I really hope this thing will pricedrop in-store soon!

i went to the reston, va target today since they are the closest to me that has it :(

Confirmed its 49.99$ at the B&M store. I talked to my gf who works for target and she said they won't price match there own site. Why the fuck not!??!?

It's clearance for crying out loud.

This was going to be a gift for my nephew. 20 bucks for a video game system for a 4 year old is ok, but not 50 bucks. He will loose it or break it.

Target's policies are the one bad thing about there store. I think B&M stores should be willing to price match their website. It's also annoying how they won't price match other Targets like if one Target has a game for $20 on clearance and another has it for $27, the $27 won't give you the $20 price until they drop it to $20 on the next markdown.

Received mine today. $20 is a perfectly reasonable price. This is not an amazing device by any means. We'll see how it is on my TV later.

Surprised by the small factor, but the games aren't all that amazing.

received mine today, the system is amazing. A great deal for 20.00. However I must admit some of the older titles just don't stand the test of time. For those finding these in stores are they in the electronic area or toys?

Anyone know if you can save your game?

yeah, got mine too. For the price it is just fine.

It is small and the screen is nice. Buttons work like they should.

I don't think you can save your game, I need to play a bit more.

The plastic is of the shiny finger smudge variety, but it really does does look and feel good.

I've seen them in the electronics section, not toys.

As for the device itself, I just received it today, and my feelings are mixed. For $20 it's not bad, but had I spent $50 I'd be sorely disappointed. The build quality really isn't that great (feels of cheap plastic) although I guess the D-Pad and video quality is good enough (although the way the graphics are scaled makes some games more difficult to play). Another thing that's important to note is that most of us are probably more familiar with the Genesis versions of the more well-known titles available, while these are the lesser-known SMS ports (a good many of which probably weren't released stateside).
Just got an email from Amazon saying my order for this has been delayed, I wonder if they mean delayed indefinitely
I just checked mine and saw the same thing.

Yup... just got a delay notification myself - they're saying it'll ship in late March, but if it was clearance it'll probably get canceled.

Is this thing worth it for the remaining 14 games, if I already have the following six games on the Gamegear or the Sega Master System?
Sonic Triple Trouble
Sonic Drift 2
Astro Warrior
Columns
Super Columns
Global Defense
Thanks Ahead.

If you want those games on a handheld, then yes. If you havent already ordered though, they are sold out.

So this is in the electronics section of Target? Ive been searching the toy sectins for months now...not the electronics. Where at, by the games? I find nothing!

It's in the electronics section of some Targets.

Around here, I've seen it in the Irvine Spectrum Target, but I haven't been able to find it at any of the others. If I recall, it was either in the same aisle, or one aisle over from the keyboards/musical instruments.

Bloody hell, I'm gonna have to check there then.

I'm sure the store selling at $20 will price match to the store that is selling it at $27. Seriously though, I think that complaint is a bit unreasonable. I think clearance can be somewhat at a manager's discretion.

I whole heartedly agree with the other issue... and not just with Target... GameStop and Frys do that same stuff. I find what I want on their website... go to the store to get it... and the price is higher at the store. That's a bit of a joke.

("There" being the Target in the Irvine Spectrum)

I went there today. Aisle F40, which is next to the videogame aisle, and is titled "Kids' Electronics".

The good news is that they have it. The bad news is that it scans at 49.99.
They shipped my order on the 15th and I still haven't fuckng received it.
Mine was estimated for arrival between 2/15-2/23. It's been sitting in the same spot, 2 hours from here, for the last 7 days.
