Hardly the deal of the century, but it was $49.99 just yesterday (I know because I check daily for the elusive used copy). Not bad for those who have to have it new and missed it when it was $35 at CC. Other stores show it at $49.99 to $59.99, but I wouldn't be surprised to see similar drops elsewhere soon.

Friday Morning edit: Back @ $40, check back later in the day.

O wow! It's back!...At $40 of course. Will it go down again? Also how long does it take to arrive if you use Ebsaver? I tried tracking it and all that I get is that it left Kentucky on 4/28.

It doesn't suck ass. Its an excellent value for the $20. However, I feel Donkey Konga is the better game as I feel the drum peripheral is more sensitive and better made. Although, I do feel the song selection on Taiko is a little better. Nevertheless, for $20, this game is a steal and you'll definitely get your money's worth if you like music games.
I find that hitting the center won't register at all. It is better to hit the outer circumference on either halves. And make sure the drum is set well so it doesn't move around when you have to hit the edges (which is a big problem for me).
dschroll --Yeah, there is a dead spot right down the middle of the drum. The game is cool and a lot of fun for $20, but I still like Donkey Konga better. The bongo drums are just better made and much more sensitive. I enjoy Taiko but it gets frustrating having to look down and readjust where I'm hitting the drum because my hits aren't registering.

The dead spot is there to differentiate the left and right side of the drum. Some songs, including multiplayer, require you to specifically hit the left or right side. Hitting the direct center won't register as left or right. Also, the notes to hit with both sticks (big boom thingie) need to be on each side.

I understand why the dead spot is there, but I just don't care for it. Having a big drum to hit, I tend to look at the screen to see the notes while hitting the drum. Eventually some hits don't register and I look down and see I'm hitting it in the middle and have to readjust.

A better design would have been to do 2 separate drums rather than dividing the big one in halves. Nevertheless, its still a lot of fun and I'm so thankful to CAG for posting this deal so I could jump in on it. Hopefully EB will keep clearancing this out so others can score on this sweet deal.

I'm surprised so many people are having problems with the drum.........I've had this game since it came out(TRU sale) and I didn't have that much trouble getting adjusted to the left/right sides of the drum. Given you still hit the center sometimes but that goes with any game but it could have been more sensitive for damn sure. I find that using one stick for mostly hitting the top of the drum for the outside notes and the other stick for both middle notes works rather well, unless it is a double or drum roll. The main thing is to make sure the little stand is attached and on a flat surface.

I don't know much about Japanese culture, but my uderstanding is that this is based one the traditional Japanese Taiko drum. If you split it into two drums then it's no longer Taiko drum master.

Santurio, I do the same. I generally use one stick for rim beats and the other for the center area of the drum. Definitely the best approach.

Backlash, yeah, I know its based off of the Taiko drum. I actually played the arcade game while in Japan on business. It was definitely a lot of fun. This game is very very good too, but again, I just felt that splitting the drum in halves was a bad move bcause of that dead spot. The center of a drum is where people tend to play at, so having it be a dead area makes it a little more difficult to get used to. Maybe the design would have been better had the drum been sensitive to how hard you hit it rather than which sides you hit. Then if you hit it hard with one/two sticks it counts as a big beat and regular hits are regular beats. Then you wouldn't have to divide the drum in halves. The left/right side rims are fine though as generally people will play on either side but not in the middle.

i don't know why people are crying about the dead spot, too, or even saying that the DK bongos are better when it's the same exact thing done differently. anyway, unless the game gives you extra points or whatever for double hits, you can just hit those the same as you would normally. it doesn't seem like it gives you anything extra if you hit both sides as opposed to hitting just one. drum rolls definitely require both sides, though.

Ah, cool, you played the real one :)

As far as one stick for rim and one for the drum, I find that I pretty much have to alternate sticks to hit the beats on Hard (and even on Medium for some songs) so I end up using both sticks for the rim and the center area.

True, but that is on the harder and higher difficulties by then you should have found a groove for yourself. You will definitely need to learn to alternate through some songs but for starters and to get used the drum the first way is a definite sure shot.

After I popped the game in and set up the drum that opening was one of the oddest I've seen (well at least since Katamari)---One line was something about someone gets sad when they forgot to wash my hands (or something like that)---Good old Japa-Engrish at its finest. When I played this today for the first time MAN were my forearms tired......I continued for about an hour straight (unlocking a couple of songs along the way) and I understand now about the spots since you have to hit the left or right side of the drum. It will take getting used to. What I noticed is when I tried to go from Easy to Normal it reminds me of the Learning Curve/Jump from going to Light to Standard on Dance Dance Revolution. Hell they even have a rating of stars for difficulty a la DDR.

I got my taiko order yesterday, now that's what I call fast free shipping. Also, they packed it very well too and it came unharmed.
Nooo!! My PS2 stopped reading all my CD-Rom games! I just got the game today and haven't even exprienced it yet!
I was in the same boat, but somehow I got it working about 2 hours ago. My sister and I have been playing it since. Damn good fun, even with one person using a controller.

You should try it with two people using the same drum, each with their own side.

I'd just like to say that "Reach The Helicopter" may be one of my favorite minigames of all time, right up there with "Hockey" on ATV Offroad Fury 2. It is not to be taken lightly; my earlier bouts with my best friend were of Olympian proportions. The winner was to be drowned in dowries and women, but we were somewhat lacking in the chicks-and-cash department, so it was settled that the winner would recieve a cheeseburger. For those of you wondering: yes, it was delicious.

For all those people who didn't get on the ebgames.com deals; Outpost.com has the Taiko drum master game w/ drums for 29.90

I got mine late last week. Since I already had another drum, I traded in the Taiko game disc at Gamestop together with 3 other old games to get the 40% extra deal. With an extra 40%, I got back $15.40 for Taiko. That means the drum costs me less than $5! Pretty good deal!

Man.. this game took me back to when I used to play the drums.

I'm still having a bit of a hard time adjusting to how I have to sit on my couch and how I have to hold the drum so that I can hit the sides, but I got my first perfect combo (on easy) last night and it felt like I really had achieved something.

The mini games are very odd.... to say the least.
Mine came. Thanks all for the updates and info and postings. I thanks again for shrike trying to look at for my back.
Glad you finally ended up with one, hiccuple. That's all I was trying to make sure happened.

I brought the two I picked up over to my GF's place over the weekend, and she broke one out last night. Looks like I picked right on getting two, since I think she's going to try to own me on it. :D And with Donkey Konga 2 released this week, I think I'll have enough rhythm games out there to work on.
Mine still hasnt shown up yet :(
Your not the only one! I'm still waiting for mines and I have no way of tracking it :(

(Hey, I never even broke out my Xbox for some multiplayer action.) In fact, I became concerned that neighbors might be displeased by all that pounding after 1 A.M. (At least we weren't situated in an apartment complex.) But everyone had a good time unlocking the rest of the songs and trying out the mini-games. All I can say is that the version of Hungarian Dance No. 5 that was included seemed to be most popular with our resident (real-life) drummer. Unexpected.

I'm also wondering what to do with my extra copy of the game (that came with the second drum set). I heard something about a 40% extra trade-in value at GameStop. Can someone let me know how to get that?

I spent Friday and Saturday nights playing at a friend's house (took it with me). Favorite songs are Katamari on the Rocks and The Genji and the Heike Clans.

I didn't read through this whole thread, so I may have missed the answer to this question if it was already posted: does Namco sell the drums separate from the game? I need a second set for two-player, but don't want to shell out $40 for the game and drum set (or for the RedOctane set).

Yes Namco does sell the drum separately, but you have to get it imported. Play Asia as it in stock now go here:

I've been playing the game, and while it is good, I'm not a big fan of the songs. (I also felt the same way about Konga, especially becuase a few of Konga's songs were very kiddy...)

While those are definitely fun, nothing tops the classical stuff that's included. I thought I was going to break the drums during Beethoven's 5th.

The classical stuff is all great, but not as fun IMO. And I haven't played it on Oni, but the 5th was too easy on hard, probably because I'm so familiar with the song. Ditto Carmen Prelude and William Tell Overture.

Once you get ahold of triplets, 1812 Overture is a walk in the park. The Russian one whose name escapes me at the moment is the only one I still stumble on. Still crazy fun though.

And Oni mode can die. :bomb:

Hungarian Dances No. 5?

The only song I've beaten on Oni is Foster's Medley, which really doesn't mean a whole lot. FM on Oni is easier than some songs on normal.

I've been wanting to play more but I left my PS2 at my friend's house because I'm going to Dallas for a week (leaving tomorrow). I haven't played any since Saturday.
Dallas CAGs in the house!

hmm, dunno where that came from...
Arlington here. ;) In about 2 days I'll be leaving for College Station for a few days to see my cousin's graduation.

and knowing is half the battle!!!

Thanks. The first few days we'll be fun but after that it's all business. Training seminars and meet and greet bullshit.

I played for the first time since that first weekend, and I beat I'm a Believer on Oni mode, second try. One-handed. There are definitely balance issues between the songs.

Oh yeah, and it was the first time I got to play multi, as I had only gotten one copy in last time I played. Definitely worth it. :D

I can confirm this. I did this today, along with two ps1 games for 1.40 each and fur fighters for 4.40.

You really need to get a hold of the Japanese versions to play with your drum. The Japanese versions are just so, so much better. More tracks, better tracks, faster loading times, different modes. Just so so so good. I haven't played the US version since I got the Japanese ones, and I'll never play it again. It's a really crippled version. Oh, and if you're a lover, get another drum because 2-player is the best, especially on songs with alternating beats, and you literally make a drum song with your friend, as you're both doing different things. My wife and I absolutely adore this game. It destroys Donkey Konga which is totally off-beat (as in, the beats don't match up with the drumming).
