OPM: "Final Fantasy XII is the best Final Fantasy on the PlayStation"

I'm gonna get this for sure but the new battle system is gonna be an adjustment.
Also the whole Ivalice thing is gonna get me going, I loved FF tactics.

People were mad when it first went 3D, they were mad when they added voices, they were mad when one installment was an mmorpg and they are gonna get mad about a different battle system.

Bottom line is, when you are 12 strong into a series you gotta have change in order to keep it fresh. Final Fantasy hasnt failed many times for me, and i wont skip the newest regular installment since FFX just because of a battle system(and yes i have played the demo)
does XII feel like Tales of...game?
Not at all. I actually thought the battle system felt like KOTOR's.

FFVIII rocks, I'm obligated to say that on any FF thread.

anyways, the last game I played on my ps2 is SotC, looking forward to booting up my ps2 and playing FFXII

I wasn't convinced by the demo, but all this positive feedback (and the fact that I keep coming back to FF, no matter how many times they burn me) has me intrigued. I'll get it in January, when I finish Zelda.

Wow, what a shocker. Honestly, it's Final Fantasy, even if the game absolutely stunk (See FFX), no big time magazine or website is gonna give it anything less than a 9 at the most.

Well since I really couldnt wait I got this game Thu night and put some time in on it during the weekend.

After having played the hell out of FFXI (years and years) to me this game feels very much like FFXI. I also played and beat FFTA putting in 60+ hours on it and to a large degree this game is great to me since its a blend of both FFXI and FFTA.
I got this where everyone else got their way to early copy. ^^

Now, explain to me why this Gambit system is a GOOD thing? I guess with these FF games, you just want the CPU to do all the fighting, so you can see the next snazzy CGI cutscene?

Van I know you played FFXI for a time. We played together of course. Dont you agree that FFXII plays more like that? Seems... and it feels odd to say this and time with it might make me change my mind but the fights seem slow so far. And unless I missed it I wish I could "lock on."

Gambits are kind of lame, but you can turn them off and play it in a regular ATB style.

Gambits just automatically control the NPC characters I believe.

The Gambit system just speeds up things. You can use it for stuff you would do for every fight. I turn of the Gambit for my leader and use "attack Leaders target" gambit and a few other things. If I want to change my strategy then I will manualy change that I want to use "fire" or what ever else I want to do. More or less it just speeds up the flow to the game.

I think I read this was done on purpose. The designers found the battle system and design of FFXI to be more immersive than traditional FF games, so they tried to incorporate a similar style into an offline RPG.
Not at all. I actually thought the battle system felt like KOTOR's.
A really good comparison, I think.
I've completed DQ VIII, Suikoden V, and Grandia III this year. I'm also nearly done with Tales of Legendia. Which one of those is standard FF most like (I know, not Legendia)?
It has all the basics of the games you mentioned, but that's pretty much it. FF4 and on has always been a basic, easy RPG at its heart but with excellent storytelling and top production values. Critics complain the series doesn't take huge risks and the battle system is always the same with minor changes. However, because of that the battle system is rarely annoying or frustrating (the main exception I can think of is FF8's draw system) and is never really difficult. In fact, as the series went on, they gradually eliminated the need to level up outside the main quest.

I wasen't a huge fan of the demo, but I'll probably still check this one out. The LE looks kick-ass!

I should be receiving EGM...I entered this free subscription thing that a CAG user had posted in late june I think. Wonder what happened there..
Just got the new EGM and they gave it an 8.5, 9, and 9.5 in a long 4 page review. It also received game of the month.
I got it too. The reviews seemd to dog on the game way more than they should have, with the first review (the 8.5) just piling it on.

EGM has a history of being anti-Square anything. It doesn't surprise me. That mag used to be great back in the 90's and now it's garbage.

As a turn-based RPG hater, I'm actually starting to get a bit curious about this game.

See, I've been playing a lot of DQ: Rocket Slime lately, and it dawned on me that tossing items back and forth inside of a gaint tank is actually very similar to the semi real-time/semi turn-based combat in the FF games, where there's constantly stuff going on (with attacks being thrown back and forth with each other) and you are only a small cog in the machine doing what you can do to keep your party afloat. The gambit system in FF12 looks to be even more along those lines, and I'm deffinitely a fan of no random battling or switching to the battle screen.

I played FF 6 and 7 many years ago and thought that they were good for what they were, but deffinitely not my kind of game, but it actually looks quite possible that this will be the FF that will change all that for me. And with all the ultra-high reviews it has been getting, I'm more than a bit curious.

8.5, 9, and 9.5 are fucking great scores from EGM. Square has been crap for the most part since the early-mid 90's. They have been going downhill since the SNES days (I have been an off and on subscriber since '91) for everything but FF games. I thought EGM had to much love for Square durring the PSX era and this is comming from a Square fanboy at the time. EGM has been crap since the early 32/64 bit gen anyways but they still do have the best reviews (when they are actually reviewing the games and not making dick and fart jokes instead of reviews.)

That's somewhat what it does. It's more of a way to direct your AI compadres in the way that they should act in and outside of battle, such as telling your mage to cast heal on party members with less than 50% health or telling them to cast a black magic spell for their first attack and then just attack for the rest of the battle and things of that sort. The gambit system allows you to focus on what you're doing and not have to worry that your other party members are going to get themselves killed like morons.

Agreed. He (Shane for those that want to know who it is) only takes one paragraph to explain why he gave it a good score, but takes the rest to explain the parts he didn't like.

Does anyone know how "limited" the exclusive collector's edition at EB/GS will be? For instance, like Doom 3 and Halo 2 CE's, or like RE4 (GC) and MGS3 CE's?

Also, is there any difference labeling a game as Limited Edition vs. Collector's Edition? I would assume that LE would have less quantities than the CE, but I'm not quite sure. Thanks in advance.

I felt upset also. I mean, I'd rather he gave it a 6 or7 than an 8.5 with "all those faults".

Yeah, I don't like reviews that don't match their scores.

No one really knows until they come out. They don't release numbers on this.

There's also the "Limited Collector's Edition." It's just a marketing choice. In reality it signifies nothing except that it is a premium edition of the game.

Is anyone here playing Final Fantasy XII yet? I know it's out there(I'm not condoning downloading/piracy in any way! I have an official review copy)... but I just wanted to know if anyone else is playing it. I really like the game thus far. The game is simply beautiful. I love the stylistic change for the series.

I kind of dropped the ball and didn't reserve this one. I thought I wasn't going to play it right when it came out, seeing as how I was going to buy a next gen system. Anyway, I'll probably get one in December and want to get this game to hold me over.

How many versions of this game are coming out? Like 3?(by that I mean original, collectors edition, etc). Which one should I pick up? I'm going to start saving my money so I get it on the day it comes out.

I'm very unsure whether I'm going to keep my preorder for the Collector's Edition. I am a big Final Fantasy fanboy and it seems like a must have for me. However, I'm not exactly rich right now and I'm severly behind on buying new games, so I might just get the regular edition. I still have time to think.

I'm really excited and can't wait to play. :D

I preordered the CE and LE guide. I've been playing Final Fantasy since I was 4 or 5 when I played the first one.

Final Fantasy has been disappointing for me since VIII and I just have the feeling that XII is going to end all of that. My favorite is VI, then VII, then Tactics.

My only problem is.. why the fuck couldn't they have put progressive scan though..?

$10 isn't a big deal is it?

Put in a few hours and I like it a lot so far. I think they hit the nail on the head--it's got MMO aspects but they're very well integrated, so it doesn't feel like a single player MMO. I was kinda worried it would before.

It definitely doesn't feel like any other FF game, or any other RPG for that matter.

just look out for that damn T-rex >_<

is it similar to the one in FFVIII? I remember running into a T-rex randomly and getting owned in the beginning of that game

haven't played VIII, but that's exactly what happens.

That's pretty bad ass.. I like how there's references from every Final Fantasy in this game.

Two. Regular, and the GameStop/EB exclusive Collector's Edition. Although, for some reason, I saw the CE tin on display at FYE.
Watching is "so much more fun" than playing?
Selecting an option from a menu and watching an associated animation is "playing" in only the loosest sense of the word.
Selecting an option from a menu and watching an associated animation is "playing" in only the loosest sense of the word.
I've always believed it's the same thing

Mario is standing in front of a block, I press A and he jumps up, I press A and forward and he jumps over it. A koopa troopa can be seen ahead, I can not press anything and wait for it to come closer, or I can press forward and see Mario walk and then press A again so that he jumps over it.

Cloud is standing across from two Shinra soldier, I press X and he runs and hits it with his sword, I press down and X and then X again and he kills it by zapping it with bolt 1. He's been hit three times and his HP is kind of low, I press down, down, and X and he uses a potion on himself.

Essentialy, it's all the same: you're pressing buttons to see something on a screen. In terms of coding it's the same thing, a button is programmed to one set action. Where and when you press that button determines the outcome. The only difference is the mental skills used to decide when and where to actually press. In the Mario scenario, it's more reflexes and timing. In the Cloud scenario, it's more strategy and statistics, some probability as well.

So why so many non RPG players think so highly of themselves and see RPG's as a lesser form of gaming, I don't know why, it's all the same, except for the mental skills used on it. Even in FPS games, it's the same thing, you press a button and the character performs a set action. Perhaps FPS gamers have more reflexes than RPG gamers and even just standard platforming/action gamers, but what makes a game being turn based shallow or pedantic?

Chess is turn based.
Poker is turn based.
Basketball is turn based.
Football is turn based.

You could say football or basketball are "real time", but how in the world are they real time? They're restricted by a set of rules, by probabilities, by statistics just like RPG's are. What's a fumble but a missed attack? What's an interception but a counter attack? What's stealing the ball but cancelling a turn? What's throwing a long bomb and running a touchdown and doing a crazy dance but pulling off a limit break and swinging your sword in the air to a fanfare?

As for chess, and poker, they're real life RPG's, just with bigger targets and different statistics. Everyone gets their turn, everyone can analyze statistics and choose different strategies, and there's just enough probablity, luck, and purely random events to throw the game off.

So I'm sorry for turning this into a long post, but I'm pretty tired of people seeing RPG's as lesser forms of gameplay, or "not really playing". Fundamentally, the genre allows for a lot more than other genre, and there's a lot more to it than just pressing the X button and sitting back. But if that's the way you feel, then I guess gaming as a whole sucks, unless you can show me a game where you won't even need to press one "button" ever.

you could prove the world (and all the actions that compose one's day) is one big turn based RPG with inferences derived from that post
i'll get us started...
I.V. = the world
D.V. = reaction time
N= 6 billion

take it from there guys!

everyone forget any negative thoughts about the game. turn based shmurn based.

the only thing I can complain about at 6 hours is Balthier's voice. he sounds too old for how he looks...fran has an interesting voice--kinda how you'd think a british rabbit person would talk, but not so high pitched. and Vaan sounds like a sissy, but not nearly as annoying as Tidus, imo.

the story is freaking awesome so far as well.
