Opoona - new Koei RPG - Out now!
Well, for the four of you who care, Opoona is out.
Make that five! Not really intent on buying it but I'd like to see the reviews.

I picked it up yesterday.
2 of the guys at GS had no clue what I was talking about, good thing the third guy did, because the game wasn't even on the shelf.

Only put in an hour last night, still in tutorial mode. Graphics are nice for the Wii. Game shows promise with its battle system. Not sure what the point of the game is yet however.

Thanks for the initial impressions! Keep us posted!

I'll try and play more tonight.

The only battles I've done so far are for "training".
Setting of the world seems unique compared to your average JRPG.
Game can be played with just the nunchuck, and it doesn't feel tacky or forced, no different than playing a pc game with a mouse or trackball.

I'm interested in the game and I like JRPGs, but I don't want to get it simply because it fills a Wii drought. If, on the other hand, it is good...

I bit the bullet and bought this, and I played it for several hours last night. I really, REALLY like it. Of course, it isn't perfect, as the translation is indeed pretty meh. But the atmosphere is absolutely amazing, and there are little touches everywhere that show you that a lot of care was given to this game by the developers. The battle system is fun, if a little simplistic, but it's definitely not easy; be prepared for wipe-outs even early on. It comes down to this: If you think you will like this game, you will like it. If you don't think it's for you, you probably won't like it, as it is very cutesy, quirky, and niche.

I put about a bit over an hour into this. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it yet. I am having fun but I have a feeling that it may get boring. First impressions are that for a game specifically made for the Wii, the graphics are very PS2-ish. No 16:9 is especially disappointing. It feels like a Lego version of a JRPG where everything looks and feels simple. I can see the difficulty is there so its not exactly something you can just breeze through.

It probably doesn't help that I'm playing it back to back with Mass Effect but I'm still giving this game a chance. This certainly isn't going to deliver a deep RPG experience but I'll turn to Lost Odyssey for that.

why oh whyy would you guys buy this game?! You guys MUST be the type that buys EVERY RPG practically on release, right? I mean to buy this you must own Metroid, smash, mario, mario party 8, paper mario, cookin mama, zack and wiki, trauma center, + 30 more better games, right?

Just curious on the buying patterns of those who actually purchased this at full price.

we've really come full circle:
pretending to be strong armed guys saving the world, to now, just true representations of our fat / balding / midget selves...

Still sort of on the fence about this one. I like lighthearted RPGs, but have too many games to play as it is. I'll probably pick it up eventually; what others have said about the game so far has been encouraging.

Well, I won't buy it at full price, but I do intend to pick this one up. It looks weird and quirky, and I like games like that. I've got enough other games to play right now that I can wait for a good deal on it.

:roll::roll::roll:

I pretty much only play RPGs nowadays. Of those games you listed, I played SMG, Paper Mario, and Zack and Wiki and ended up selling them/trading them in because I didn't like them very much. I played Cooking Mama on DS and found myself bored really quick. I played Trauma Center on the DS and got frustrated at the shitty, unresponsive controls. I really, really dislike the Smash Bros series, and seriously, Mario Party? So I do try games other than RPGs, but I generally end up not liking them.

What the fuck is wrong with people having different tastes? Sounds like you won't even give this game a CHANCE, even though I have played it for the past two weekends and am having the best time I have ever had on the Wii. This is exactly the kind of RPG I have been waiting for. Seriously, guys, if you think you'll like this game, you WILL. It's quirky and niche, but in the hands of the right audience, such as me, it's pure gold. So, to update from my previous post from last week: I have played several more hours, and it still kicks ass. Hell, it's kicking even more ass now that I have a second party member other than Opoona. It makes the battles go much more smoothly and faster.

I barely have time for longer games anymore, am rarely excited about RPG's, and I'm interested in this. In fact, your most recent post made me even more curious. Price drop or Goozex, here I come!

I put a little more time into this last night. Its picking up some pace so I'm finding it more enjoyable than I did before. I switched from nunchuk only to classic control because I read it makes things faster with menus and items. Very true. I also like to be able to control the camera more. Whats really annoying is that some parts have a static camera and it seems like I may be missing some treasure chests.

I'll also say if you don't like the graphical style of this game that it doesn't grow on you. I've ran into some characters that seem better suited for playable guys. Theres always Baroque though!

Have made some progress in this game, but am starting to lose interest. There is hints at an in depth story, but I'm getting bored waiting for it to happen.

Plus, the game is easy, what happened to the old school difficulty I read about?
I'll give it another night before I switch to something else.

It is mostly easy, but if you get bombarded by a group of like 10 enemies who are constantly attacking you with just Opoona, it's easy to die. But there is pretty much zero penalty for dying except for the loss of a day (which doesn't mean anything) and a few dollars (generally of an amount that you can make up by fighting just one battle). I honestly like that, because I am sick of games that fuck you in the ass if you make a simple mistake (ZACK AND WIKI).

Yes, there are a few battles that cause you to think.
I do like that battles are fast, makes up for the fact that they come so frequently.

Just beat this game. I am kind of sad to see it's done. I really, really liked it. The ending was extremely underwhelming though. They could have done a lot more with it. Oh well, the ride was by far the best I've had on the Wii so far.

The final boss was creative, but still damn easy. Hell, regular enemies are easier.

I finally bit the bullet and bought the game. Not bad, not bad at all. It's one of those games where if you really like the genre, you'll like the game, and if you are more of a casual RPGer, you might not like it as much.

For those that care... I'm about halfway through and it is mostly what people have said -- a nice RPG with some blemishes, particularly in localization.

I have to say that the game's varied sidequests -- jobs, friends, and so on -- really work well. The biggest plus is that they are all interconnected, so none of them feel superfluous. Many jobs, for example, pay out money to buy better equipment, while friends can raise your fame to provide access to certain jobs.

With another month or so in localization work, I think this game would have been a better product. Even now, though, in its current form, it's a legitimately decent game. It's worth a look if you like the genre, and not simply because it's one of the few bona fide RPGs on Wii.

Put 10 hours into this game over the weekend with my girlfriend. I am enjoying it, but she really likes it.
The negatives are the town maps are a joke, which is unfortunate because it is really easy to get lost until you get the hang of where every elevator and door leads. Also annoying when you are trying to track someone down. Gamefaqs was checked several times when a better map would have solved everything.
Having a static camera when in the outside world is also annoying, not crippling, but an odd design choice.
Poor translations, maybe 10%. of the time you will be asked a question with a yes/no prompt and either it is unclear which to choose or it is the wrong answer. Again, not crippling since you can start the conversation over again.
My girlfriend likes the license/job system, and it is a convention more rpgs should have to encourage sidequests. Also, and this is an AWESOME feature. Being able to shop for items from the submenu. It is such a joy to simply buy more health options, or other items rather than backtracking to a depot. Also, save locations are frequent. And the battle system is surprisingly deep.

The only time the game has really punished was catching the weasel with the dog-mandatory at that. Online help wasn't very. Through trial and error this is the strategy I discovered:

Since the camera is static, it is always best to be chasing the weasel in an up direction so you can see him. You can either stand still or walk around and he will appear. When you get close, he will run away, and if you chase after him, he will keep running until he disappears.
However, once he is in that area, he will stay in that area. So you can go back to where you first saw him and he will come back. (Conversely, you can also wander around and find another, they are never more than 20-30 seconds from appearing.)
Slowly walking to him and then running at him or cutting off his pursuit are fool's efforts. Maybe you can do this, but I certainly couldn't after 10 minutes.
Instead, I noticed that if you give chase, and then wait, the weasel will run and then stop 15-25 yards away. As you walk over, he will either be facing you or have his back turned. If he is facing you, chase him so he disappears, or go back to where you were so he walks over to you. Then try again.
BUT IF HE IS FACING AWAY FROM YOU, now is the time to grab him because he is not paying attention. Walk slowly over- don't panic and run- and you will catch him.
It is not over yet, now you fight him. I read online that he is really weak. But I fought him three times and each time he ran away. Once I hit him for 22 points, then he ran, than I hit him for 22 points again and he ran, then the third time he ran immediately. On the 4th attempt, I hit him for 23 points, and then another 23 points and that got him. Having to trigger 4 battles was how I got the strategy of catching him down.
Whole thing took 25-30 minutes when it should have taken 3.

Is Opoona worth $50? I've been wanting to get this game, but the CAG in me doesn't want to pony up $50; especially when its only Amazon and GS that carry it around here.

I was looking forward to it, but the mediocre reviews turned me away from a purchase. I ended up getting it from goozex. At $50, I don't know. It has already bombed, maybe there will be a price drop, maybe it will simply go on clearance and/or disappear from stores.
