Well I'm certainly buying the Orange Box when it comes out, however I'd like to get that 5$ discount that steam is offering. Normally I'd just preorder it now, but my apartment's internet is really crappy right now, and I know all those games are gonna take a long time to download. So, is there any way to preorder the game for the discount, and then pick it up at a store or something?

You can at gamestop. Since its slow and shitty you could get it off steam now and by the time it releases you will be able to play.
So if I was to preorder now, I can download the games, just not play them till release?
this is correct for Episode 2 and Portal. All other games in the Orange box (HL2, Ep 1 and TF2) are playable as soon as you purchase and download it off of steam.

Well I just took the plunge for the Orange Box at GS a second ago. However they didn't give the 5 bucks off and they didn't give me the TF2 beta code. I need to go back.
Has anyone been to ApertureScience.com That has gotta be the best viral marketing I have seen.
What the hell does it do?

Try Typing(Without the quotes) "HELP" "LOGIN" "LOGON" Input any Username, type password "Portal" then type at the B prompt "Apply" and do the whole thing. It is some freaky stuff. also just mess around on the site and type stuff.

so I really want to play this game (Half Life) but I do not own any next gen console,

are my computer specs good for it? I think I meet the minumum requirements but I do not meet the recommended ones.

my computer is:
Windows XP, Celeran 2.53Ghz with 768mb ram.

per wikipedia, the requirements are:

Minimum[3]:
Pentium 4 1.7GHz, DirectX 8 graphics, 512MB RAM, 5GB disk space, Windows 2000/XP/Vista
Recommended[4]:
Pentium 4 3GHz, DirectX 9 graphics, 1GB RAM, 5GB disk space, Windows 2000/XP/Vista

I do not know what DirectX I have (how do I find out?) but am I good so far?

thanks!

Go to "Start", "Run", then type in "dxdiag" and it'll run tests and tell you.
So what are people playing First?

For me it will be a toss up between HL2:Ep 2 and Portal. Probably Ep 2 will win out though.
I have to finish the last 4 chapters of HL2, then EP1, and EP2. I'm going to play Portal along with those. I may just play Portal first if it turns out as good as it looks.

Question: If I buy the physical game, can I download it from Steam? Do they give you a code or anything? Or... does it work as if you downloaded -- without a CD, and listed under My Games in Steam?

Edit: I couldn't wait to find out. I caved and bought it on Steam.
What Video Card do you have JEKKI? That is one of the big things.
I donno man, I got a Dell and I am not sure if there is a seperate video card in there or if it's just on board with the mobo.

I was clicking around my computer the other day trying to see if I could find out anything about directx, but I did not see anything that would lead me to any type of graphix card info

keithp>> thanx! I'll try that when I get home tonite, maybe it will point me in the direction of a graphix card too.

It will. After you type in dxdiag, the initial tab will give you a rundown of some hardware specs that are important:
 • CPU/Processor
 • Memory (RAM)
As well as what DirectX Version your running near the bottom of the window

Click on the Display tab and that will give you your Gfx Card Specs:
 • Name/Model of Video Card
 • Chip Type
 • Total Memory
 • Driver Information to the window right next to it. Make sure that it's up-to-date otherwise you'll have to DL the most recent drivers from the Manufacturer's Website.
We could get more technical about it, but having a basic rundown of your comp specs now should be fine.
whoo! I got the recommended directx!

hopefully I am all good.
Well, Celeron's aren't too great, nor is embeded Intel Graphics, or less than 1GB ram.

Then again, I did read that Team Fortress 2 at least was designed to run on lower end systems. The rest of the Half-Life 2 package could probably run, but not with high settings, or a high framerate.

I don't know man. You computer is pretty iffy. I am not sure how well it's going to run on it. It's hard to make a call.

I got the orange box on steam...and basically everything downloaded in an hour and 30 minutes. Slow speeds my ass.

You also get peggle extreme with it but i dont like it. Still TF2 has been eating away my time.

Those who got the physical copy already, can you start playing already? or do also need to wait until 10/10 12am? I am just wondering. Can't wait for this game!

I can play HL2, EP 1 and TF2 but not the others.

I was originaly going to purchase the games at Fry's in Tempe for $37.99 but then relize that with 8.10% tax, the whole purchase would have been $41.07 + gas. So $44.95 on Steam was the choice for me.

considering valve has some of the worst physical packaging known to mankind, might as well go steam. After all that's what they're encouraging on purpose by doing that.

Anyone know when they're going to enable HDR for halflife 2 so I can finally go back to beat that crappy box stacking game?

Mmmm, portal.

I'm about 2 hours into it, and it's freaking amazing. There's actually a story and the computer voice is mocking you the entire time, I love it.

Edit: Wow, and another hour of gameplay and it's done. This game is really awesome (the end puzzle, while simple, was really cool), but god damn it's WAY too short.

Wow. Portal is only three hours long?

...

I think I'll wait on this. I don't /care/ about TF2. Portal was what I was most excited about.

Honestly, I still feel that Portal was worth the 45 bucks. It's one of those games that is just sheer happy.

That, and I know that the mod community is going to start making fan maps. It's going to have legs.

And there is a story, kinda. :T I wanted that fucking cake more than anything else.

the cake is a lie! that room with all the scribblings is hilarious. pictures of the companion box everywhere

The portal gun is the coolest thing ever. I'm almost finished with it already, which kinda sucks because the game is amazing.

Try not to spoil things for people who have not beat it. I just beat it and it was pretty awesome, so it would be nice if it was kept just as awesome for other people. Use spoiler tags if needed.

My guess as to what the "story" is (spoilers about the ending):

You're a woman who killed her boyfriend, then was sent to Aperture Science as a human test subject. The machine that leads you through the tests went crazy and killed everyone at Aperture at some point, but left you alive for some reason? That's about all I could decipher...

Theres also that comment about android hell and the fact that you have those weird things sticking out of your feet, which makes me think that you're just an android being trained. However, the fact that the computer uses neurotoxins to try and kill you would suggest otherwise.

Oh, something else to think about. When you first get to the CPU and it drops that purple eye it says something like, "I know what that is, it was installed to prevent me from flooding the place with gas like I did before." Well, if it killed everyone with the gas the first time, who installed the limiter?

Good call.

I have to say, this game is the perfect length--not a minute is wasted. Although some extra puzzles would've been cool (hopefully modders will make them.)
