Overhyped piece of...

I believe Fable should be there. Halo should be on there as well. Blasto was hyped back in the day. Other than that, I don't remember those others being way overhyped.

I can agree with the #1. Metal gear was good, but no way as good as the media hyped it up to be. Plus i thought it was a short game.

I'd make a John Romero joke right now, but the fact that he's now making N-Gage games says more than I possibly could.

Even though i think i am going to play, and very much enjoy, Fable, I agree with it being up there. Any game that declares that it is going to be "the best RPG evar!!" and is not even the best on its system, a system without that many RPGs to begin with, is completely overhyped.

BnW, Daikatana should definetly be up there. Don't know about the others.
Donkey Kong Country, an average platformer? Since when? Other than that, the list is solid.
I think they're framing it against the games we play today, which they shouldn't. DKC, albeit a little derivative even back then, was still a blast.

Isnt he working on Area 51 for midway? :?

Heh, the guy with "Mort the Chicken" as his avatar is telling us about good games.

I forgot about that. But that one looks like balls too though, at least to me. And this is coming from a huge fan of the arcade Area 51's.

Heh heh, yeah i heard that game was one of the worst ever (ranking down with drake). I never played it, I just like the picture.

I think Doom 3 should be there. Yeah it had a good graphic system, but IMHO I thought Far Cry's was better. Actually, on every level Far Cry is better. There franky wasn't anything really new with Doom 3 except for the ability to manipulate computer consoles.

I don;'t think Doom 3 is bad. I think it's actually a good game. But nothing breakthrough and waaaay over hyped.

I have to disagree with Donkey Kong Country. I thought the game lived up to the hype quite well.

Shenmue I slightly disagree. I'm not sure what people were expecting but it played like I thought it would and I enjoyed it. I think it lived up to the hype.

I pretty much agree with that list but i was a little to young to remember any hype on DKc blasto, and battle cruiser but other than that its straight.

Donkey Kong was a great game back in the day and I think State of Emergancy should be on there because Gamestop hyped that game up too much.

Completely disagree with DKC and Shenmue. DKC was a revalation when it came out, nobody was disappointed with that. Shenmue never claimed it was anything it wasn't like Fable, and was one of the best games on the Dreamcast. It might not be your cup of tea, but that doesn't mean it was overhyped. Besides, Sega doesn't know how to overhype anything.

Halo wasn't overhyped per se, MS paid more attention to Oddworld at launch and Bungie wasn't really hyping the game. The hype came later after it sold pretty well, and mostly from fans of the game. Halo 2 could certainly take #1 if its disappointing, but I doubt that.

Any of the Tomb Raider games should have been on there. I did like the first. The rest were just cookie cutter sequels and very uninspired.

I disagree with the guy who mentioned that Halo should be on there as well. I found the single player campaign fun and graphically stunning, especially considering it came out a few years ago. I know many people hammer on it for level design, and I'll admit the repetition of some of the levels was a bit much. It comes across as a cheesy way for the progammers to extend the play time of the game.

Yes, there were some shortcomings in the campain mode but in my opinion, the multiplyer alone justifies all the praise the game received when it came out back then. Some of the best times I've ever had gaming, (console or computer) were playing Halo with a bunch of friends via system link.

If I could add a game to the top ten list of over-rated games I would definitely go with Metroid Prime. I bought it and could never see what all the hype was about. The controls seemed a bit akward and the gameplay just didn't do it for me. I'm a big fan of the Metroid series since the original on the nes but Prime didn't draw me in like the others. The game has like a 96% rating overall at gamerankings.com for crying out loud. The game was decent, deserving of a high 80 score perhaps but 96%? I really don't think so.
I think State of Emergancy should be on there because Gamestop hyped that game up too much.
How about, "Every GTA-playing asshole clamoring for another scrap from Rockstar" hyped that game up too much. Not to suggest that every GTA player is an asshole, but people just bought into Rockstar after GTA, regardless of what the game's quality was.

Glad that they put the overhyped piece of trash Star Wars Galaxies on the list. Dancing/entertainer profession, what the hell were they thinking. Still bitter about paying full price for that buggy and boring game.

I'm with ya on SWG. What a boring piece of crap and a waste of $50. Daikatana was definitely craptastic too. I'll never buy another game Romero is associated with again. Is he working on Area 51?
WOW, no Final fantasy games on the list, surprised.
True, atleast one Square game should have made the list, maybe replacing DKC.

I remember reccomending a friend get SOA during that time because Rockstar was god after the release of GTA 3....my bad. Of course he was the one who later reccomended SWG to me so I got what was coming to me.

I believe Fable should be there.
Fable is in their in page 2, its ranked 3.
No, what I meant was I believe that it deserves to be at that spot on the list...sorry for the confusion.

I remember when i was like 13(7years ago) going to the arcade and popping quaters into Area 51 for hour's. It was a great shoot em up arcade game.
I agree on Daikatana....that game was so awful my butt was sore after I played it

Your supposed to insert the cd into your PC, not your rectum.

Why does everyone think "overhyped" = "bad game"? I enjoyed Halo. My friends and I still get together for LAN. But overhyped? Come on, it's a game you hear about every day since it was released. The sequal is going to be the exact same. Halo 2 should have already made the list as well. :)

Metal Gear made the list! Finally, somebody agrees with me.

I also agree with the surprise that there were no Final Fantasies on the list.

Finally, I nominate Halo 2 as the ultimate candidate for this list when it finally comes out. For all the excitement this game has gotten, it had better pick my stock portfolio, teleport me to work every morning, and enable time travel at 88 mph (with 1.21 jigawatts of course) if it wants to have a chance of living up to all the hype.

Well, considering the thread title says "Overhyped piece of..." I still stick by my decision to defend Halo. I realize overhyped doesn't necessarily mean a bad game, and I think Fable, which made the list, fits the bill perfectly. Great game overall but didn't live up to all that was rumored to be in the game.

So you and you're friends are still playing Halo a few years after the initial release? Doesn't that say something? For many, the Halo lan experience is still arguably one of the best (if not the best) multiplayer experiences in console gaming. I don't think it deserves to be on the top 10 overhyped games of all time by any stretch of the imagination.

I agree with Star Wars Galaxies, and Black & White. MGS 2 at #1 made me smile. It was such a disappointment. (What the hell was up with that story? And the bosses...come on a fatguy on roller skates called Fatman?)

I disagree with Shenmue at #2. The game was amazing.

I would add State of Emergency to the list. Everybody thought it was the next GTA only because of Rockstar and the sticker "Warning: Check ID" on the cover.
They forgot to add:

Halo
Halo2
Kotor
Snake eater
killzone
you can add all the GTA games past the first one to that list as well
Donkey Kong Country, an average platformer? Since when? Other than that, the list is solid.
What is up with some people and DKC? First gamespy puts it on their overrated game list, now this? Am I the only one who found DKC a great platformer?

How did I know that someone was gonna bring up gta as soon as I posted.

DKC lived up to its hype. I remember that like it was yesterday. That game was a major masterpiece for its time period. And it opened new doors for graphics design in games to boot.

MGS2? No way. I loved it more than the original. Then again, maybe I just missed the hype for that, because I still didn't have a PS2 until quite a while after its release.

Fable? Yes sir. I knew it would turn out to be nothing as people expected. Face it hype machine: There will NEVER be another game as deep and detailed as Ultima VII.

Blasto? Yes!! I remember reading huge sections in magazines hyping that up to the heavens and it turns out to be a hohum generic... blech.

Personally I think overhyped means there was some disappointment when the game came out, with Halo there was no disappointment, hence no overhype. Sure they may be overpublicized and their rabid followings may rant about them tirelessly, but that doesn't mean it's overhyped.

I honestly have to disagree with whoever said Halo was overhyped..i mean.....if somthign was over hyped, people still wouldn't be having system link matches once a month with this game, i wouldn't call halo revolutionary, but it was sure as hell a bitchin game.

I don't really remember blasto and I don't remember Shenmue getting any hype ( hell after launch I don't remember anything on the dreamcast getting any hype), so I can't comment on that, but I have to heavily disagree with DKC, and Metal Gear Solid 2. I felt DKC really delivered it's graphics truely set the bar back in the day and I found it's platforming aspects to be quite good, especially considering the competition at the time. I thought Metal Gear Solid 2 delivered as well, it wasn't as good as the first one, but it was still a very good game.

Black and White should have been the #1 game on that list and Halo should have been added too, perhaps even Super Mario Sunshine should have made an appearance.

OMFG HALO IZ T3H RULZ I CATN BELIEV PPL DON LIEK IT IS SO FUN, LOL!11

I'll admit Halo gets more attention from rabid fanboys than any game truly deserves, but it's still a great game. I know it doesn't have "feature x" or "game y" did it first or better. But I know that when I play Halo, I'm having fun. And that's all that counts.

Halo was a HUGE disapointment for me and my friends and didn't live up to the hype at all. It was a decent game but not even close to as good as everyone was saying it was.
Whoa whoa and whoa cricket003...

Who is that in your sig image?
The question needs to be answered. =P~

Tell us. Tell us. =P~

Halo was a solid game. I never really paid attention to the hype after it's release because I didn't have a Xbox at the time. When I did get it, that was one of the first ones I picked up because I heard it was good. I wasn't dissapointed.

Halo 2, is bound to dissapoint in some areas. I belive they will do a great job with the game. But people are expecting too much out of it. Seriously. There are gonna be lots of people finding something wrong with it.

I'm the same way with movies. People hype them up before they come out (Like Star Wars Episode 1).I never go into a theatre expecting to see the greatest movie of all time. I go to be entertained, and if I am, then I walk away happy. There is nothing that is so great that it demolishs everything that came before it.

Well, games that dissapointed that were hyped in my opinon were....

Dead Or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball.
Believe it or not, but go to some game sites and almost all of them give it a great rating. And for what? They say its a solid volleyball game, even the best out of most. So when the Circuit City clearance sale happend a few months ago, I picked it up for $5. And it wasn't even worth that.
The Volleyball engine was horrible. The computer controlled your character(movement wise) while you just hit the ball. It seems like these reviewers of the game are smitten over CGI girls when they could go out and get a girlfriend or go to a strip club and gawk at REAL girls. Why would you settle for fake ones? I know the reviewers couldn't have gotten some joy out of buying bikini's and lipstick in the game.

others....
Brute Force-that got SOME hype....all I got out of it was a basic repetitve sqad combat game that wasn't revolutionary

New sports games (a lot of them get hyped as well)....
Seriously, why do people buy the newest sports games year after year. The graphics don't change drastically, the actual sport will always be the same, theofore the rules will be the same. I really don't know why people keep forking over their money to EA sports to buy the newest sports title for the new players and stats, when they could obviously update that with downloadable content(for Xbox anyway). I think buyers should make EA sports(or other sport companies) work for that hard earned $50 people pay evey year. I'm aware they put little new modes in there, but that isn't enough, at least hold off a year or two until you give the game a serious overhaul.
