The pizza in NYC (and the surrounding tri-state area) tastes better than anywhere else in the world... well, except Italy - they have some damn tasty pizza there too... and I guess I like Chicago style pizza but that's not really pizza the way I think about pizza but that's another conversation... Anyway, the thin crispy crust, homemade sauce and just the right amount of real mozzarella is what makes the pizza great. They just can't seem to get it right in other parts of the country.
Also, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Domino's, etc. are about as much pizza like a McDonald's cheeseburger is a cheeseburger. Just awful and I wouldn't eat that crap if you paid me to.
I was told that real Italian Pizza is basically like little crackers with a shred or few of cheese, no sauce, but slices of (cooked?) vegetables such as tomatoes instead. Nothing like the pizza we know and love.
I agree, every (over)commercialized pizza franchise pizza I have had sucks. None of them use real cheese or sauce from what I have seen. I'm not sure what the couple local joints use, but they do taste magnitudes better.
The worst Pizza I have ever had came from Mazzio's Pizza. It's in Oklahoma and I don't know where else, but it was horrendous! I felt ill for at least a day and a half later and couldn't eat anything just because of how bad it tasted and how long the flavor lasted in my mouth. I could swear I was still burping up Mazzio's Pizza breath the whole next day. Blek!
I have never had NY pizza, but have always wanted to ever since watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies.
On topic, I say get plain cheese pizza. Nothing beats a plain cheese pizza. Basic, simple, and always swell. If you like their plain cheese, try something more daring next time.
