Long ass movie. You'll see a whole bunch of stuff, be wowed, and think to yourself "Hey. This has to be over soon!". You look at your watch. "The little hand is hours...large hand is minutes...angled so the movie illuminates it...wtf.. an hour and a half left?!?!?!"

Its long but it is PACKED. There are very few "calm" moments in this film, and normally when there are there's still something going on in the background.

There are a lot of throwbacks to Pirates #1, and a few more refrences to the ride, but the rest of it is pretty fresh and new.

CGI...yes, there are a few times where you can clearly tell something is computer rendered...but othertimes the realisim is downright freaky. Loved the Kraken and the Flying Dutchmans crew.

I'd give it a solid 8..and that could go up depending on what happens in Pirates #3, since there are a lot of little plot strings that could actually make this look better in retrospect.

There is a little bit at the end of the credits, cute and not obviously important, but the monkey with the coin comes into play in this movie, so who knows.

Cool. I think my wife and I are going to see this movie this afternoon. I remember the First PoC movie feeling really long too. But there's a difference between being long and dragging. Sounds to me like its a winner.

I watched it last night and saying it's long is almost an understatement. They could've cut out probably at least a half hour and have it be just as good, not that it was bad. There were sometimes where I thought a character or two was actually playing out of character from the first film, in other words they sold out some characters to create certain situations IMO. But in the end it was a fun film, maybe not as much as the first but it's hard to keep up that level of light-hearted fun the first had going over a 150 minute runtime as well as a need to set up the 3rd film.

I saw the midnight showing last night, and I loved the first pirates movie (even though ninjas are far cooler mammals) I expected the sequel to kinda suck, as most sequels do, and didn't even know there was a third movie in the works.

Having said that, I was completely surprised by the movie, I think I liked it even more than the first. The ending really ticked me off, in a halo 2 style way, but it's just made me want the third movie even more.

And Davy Jones is my new favorite CG character.

I give it a 9/10 for awesomeness, loses a point for historical innacuracy (pirates not depicted as the raping, pillaging brutes they really were, before ninjas eradicated them)

Seriously, it's a good movie, I didn't even notice the length because it was so packed with info and things going on.

The wife and i were going to see it last night, but the running time is what kept us away. We'll definitely be checking it out over the weekend. Thanks for the impressions!

Whoa, why the hell did they make it 150 minutes long?! It's a Disney summer movie for crap's sake! Anyway.... my boyfriend saw it last night at midnight and I'm at home, so I wasn't able to go. He's still asleep so I don't know his verdict, but I'm seeing it anyway at some point today.

Geez... that's too long for me to sit in a movie theater, I think. Damn uncomfortable chairs don't go well with back problems.

I'm pretty sure those are Chinese charcters...but they are so damn close to having Pirates VS. Ninjas...
Real or fake poster? Because wow, that's only another year until they drop the next movie.
It may be real or fake but yes the next film is coming out next year. The filmed this and the next one in succesion like the matrixes and the lotr films.

Real. And yes, only a year. They have been working on both movies at the same time.

For more news, they will be shooting scenes with Keith Richards (yep, Rolling Stones) in September.

They should be Chinese characters on the poster since the story is supposed to have something to do with a Chinese pirate played by Chow Yun-Fat. (The movie is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End).

As for the second one, I haven't gotten to see it yet but I can't wait to. Hopefully sometime this weekend I'll end up seeing it. Definitely one of the movies I've been wanting to see all summer.

I want to see this movie because of the hype, but I'm one of the people that wasn't amazed with PoTC1 like a lot of peopler were. I thought it was good, but nothing amazing. I'll probably still end up seeing PoTC2 sometime this weekend though out of curiosity...but 150min? Ouch.

I said it in the Superman Returns thread...but I'm still shocked people complain about the length of a movie when they're paying $9+ for a ticket.

Only $5 around here, and even after 6pm its only $7. I usually wait for movies to hit the $2 theater here before I watch them. Exceptions are of course the bigger movies aka Superman Returns
Real or fake poster? Because wow, that's only another year until they drop the next movie.
Yes, they filmed Part 2 & Part 3 at the same time so the 3rd is in editing right now. However, since they've decided to add Keith Richards as Jack's father, they will shoot those new scenes, clip them on to the footage they have now, and BAM, part 3 is out in a year.

I haven't gone to see it yet, but I'm definitely going. As far as movie ticket prices, 150 minutes is work an $8 ticket.

Anyway, I am definitely anxious to get to the movie theater and see it.

Well a bunch of us tried to go see this last night, but we went to 4 different theaters at around 10 pm wanting to get tickets to any of the midnight or later showings and they were sold out everywhere.

But I am off to see it in a couple hours and will let everyone know what I thought of it.
I said it in the Superman Returns thread...but I'm still shocked people complain about the length of a movie when they're paying $9+ for a ticket.
Because people don't want to pay $9 to be bored for an hour or two either. On the flipside people have really short attention spans as well so it's hard to please them. But personally I'd much rather pay $9 for a solid film that keeps me glued to my seat for 90 or 120 mins than a 180 minute film that bores me for 45 mins or an hour or so on. Pirates 2 wasn't that bad mind you, but it had some parts that could've been trimmed. In the end pacing is very important IMO because, especially when you are stuck in a crowded and generally uncomfortable theater, getting bored with the film will take you out of the immersive feeling of watching a film pretty quickly.

So the question I pose is this... Pirates or Superman? This should probably be another thread... I am not into comics by any means and thought both Pirates one and spiderman were OK probably liked Pirates a little more than either spiderman movie...

Hmmm which to see if either.

This movie was kind of boring IMO. Not much happened over the course of a 2.5 hour running time. They could have cut out a lot and I think it still would have had the same impact, but just with less boredom. Best part was in the ending
when Geoffrey Rush showed up. I think he's a great actor and him playing a lead role in the third bodes well for a better film.

I too saw a midnight showing, but I'm just now getting up. So, ha.

I saw no problems with the running time. I buy my ticket, I sit down, I stay down, I be quiet, watch the movie, and leave. So odd to see people do that anymore. Last time I got up during a movie was Seed of Chucky, but only because no one was in the theater except me and my friends, so we just goofed off big time.

I think i have finally concluded from your posts and general preferences/interests that you are the polar opposite of myself. Odd.

Or maybe you just feel icky when associated with anything popular.

One of the movies that truly got a great scare out of me, that one, just by being unexpected... you should know what I'm talking about. The scene where...

that reporter chick, I think, took the videocam somewhere else to check stuff out, and that thing was all that ways away from her, then was all just like up in her face and stuff. I saw that before those "pop" joke videos on the internets, so it caught me by total surprise that time and freaked me out for a good long time.

I thought POT2 was a great film.It tied together with the first one great. 2 1/2 hours for a movie is long but, you dont get that to much nowadays. They wanna get you in, suck your 9 bucks out of ya and thats it. I enjoy long movies.( especially good ones.)

Massive suckage, but I guess I'm the only one who felt that way.

Loved the first film, hated this one because of the lousy slapstick, and I hated the ending. Nothing was accomplished. After two and a half hours, things were worse off than they were beforehand.

I felt like the plot was an excuse just to have a whole bunch of "cool stuff" happen, and to set up the sequel. I was pissed walking out. I felt like I had watched a two hour advertisement for the next film. Which I will not be paying to see.

You're not the only one. I mean, I enjoyed the action scenes and all of the comedy, but that ending was bullshit. As you said - not much was resolved. It felt like I was playing halo 2 again.

Yet, all of my friends were like OLOL ITS PIRATES OF THE CARIB SO WE'LL JUST GIVE IT TWO THUMBS UP.

God, I was pretty dissapointed...I was expecting it to, you know, actually resolve something by the end of it.

I agree 100%. But I will probably see the next film if it gets more favorable reviews than this has been getting; I seem to agree with all the negative reviews on this one, interestingly. I was also pissed that
there will obviously be a misunderstanding and tension between Liz and Will throughout the whole goddamn next film because Will saw her kissing Jack, while she could just talk to him about it and make everything ok, but she won't because that's how Hollywood works. Talk about a cliched and annoying plotline. Can't they come up with anything better in a movie with fucking PIRATES?
Don't worry, it'll slow down once people realize it sucks, and they won't go see it a second time.
They won't realize it sucks. It didn't happen with Spiderman 1 until the DVD release and it won't happen now.

I saw it, I liked it, but I felt that them accomplishing nothing really made me almost not like it.... I was hoping for the Davy Jones storyline to be tied up...but nope....nothing.

Love the movie. With that said the ending took me by surprise a bit. I hadn't been expecting (you know who) from the first movie to come back, but all in all I felt that it fit perfectly. A thousand times better than X3 (garbage). And to those talking about how they didn't feel that the ending resolved anything, need I remind you people about LOTR: The Two Towers or for god's sake Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back? Star Wars had a major ending with the "Luke I am your father" line which didn't really tie up much, but set into motion the third film.

Agreed. I'm that much money and concession prices still have increased at my movie theatre so that if I want treat my girl it costs me an arm and a leg. And really, this is one of those movies from start to finish were enjoyable and you hardly feel the 2 1/2 hours go by.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it but I was damn well entertained! I loved the ending too, I don't know why but it was just FUN!

Dammit! You got me there!

Saw POTC2 today and yeah, thought it sucked. Wow, fresh from Superman Returns comes another "epic" movie 2 hrs+ long and this one was BORING. Nighy was neat as Davy Jones, but woo-hoo: GIANT SQUID FTW. Are you kidding me? The Kraken was boring. Somehow, they even made the whole waterwheel fight on the island boring. I liked Rush appearing, which wasn't much of a surprise if you even occasionally checked IMDb cast listings for World's End.

Biggest complaint though?

"Whip him." Might as well say, "Here, fangirls: shirtless Orlando Bloom!" I didn't pay $7.25 for the Passion of the Pirate.

I liked it. I was a little annoyed with the end pacing and the running time though.

Mostly cause I had to piss like all hell. And I ended up mis-timing the ending and ran off to miss the last 5 minutes.

But it was either that or have my bladder rupture, like a urine bomb in my trousers. I think I made the right choice.

Saw it last night and really didn't like it - I was bored during the whole movie. Some parts were cool, but the movie just dragged for me. Mind you, I absolutely adore the first, but something was off in the second. I was surprised when, coming home last night and reading some online reviews, most fans and non-movie critics loved it.

I did stumble upon a review that I wholeheartedly agree with, though: http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=23740

But my problem is with the story. Specifically, with the beyond-aimless, vaguely nonsensical plotting. You see, this time around, all the gorgeously staged mayhem and little character bits serve a story that's pointless and overblown - and half-told - and the movie's full of moments where bits of operatic mega-drama are surrounded by so much freneticicsm, they get plowed under and cease to be important.

I caught a day 1 midnight showing (Which, ironically enough wasn't as busy as last night according to my sister). My thoughts upon the flim's conclusion:

The first movie was a good, stand-alone movie.

The second movie really good with a cliffhanger ending, showing the cast preparing to go help a beloved main character who's in mortal danger.

If the third movie has Ewoks, I'm gonna be pissed.

:bouncy:

I think if you werent pouring over info about it for the past two years and just went in to watch the flipping movie, you probably will enjoy it. If you watch the movie and decide to break it down in outline form and analyze how the plot development was and look for holes in the acting, and are too afraid to laugh at something because you declare it "slapstick", yeah, you'll probably think it sucks.

I expected Johnny Depp to be dragging his feet through this one as if he was obligated, but he did a good job maintaining the character and giving you what you expected from Jack Sparrow.

and also..

Does anyone think that miss swann might actually have an interest in jack, instead of Turner? I didn't really think of it as a "they aren't talking" type of thing as much as Swann being conflicted, and maybe actually having feelings for jack.

I'm not sure about your theory, but Swann and Sparrow's relationship towards the end kinda pissed me off. It felt completely tacked-on and out-of-character for both of them. I also felt that there wasn't enough emphasis on Turner and Swann being happily reunited (since this was one of the biggest plot points in the movies). However, this is one of my only complaints.

It's the nature of the second film in a trilogy to be like this. I thought it was well-written with plenty of clever tie-ins, especially for a series that was likely never expected to be more than a single movie (refer to the record of the other Disneyland ride-themed release, Haunted Mansion).

First movie: Did surprisingly well, so they decided to make it a trilogy. Could have stood alone just fine.

Second movie: Disney offered a lot of money, and the writers scrambled to make it a trilogy. Must be transitory to set up the 3rd. Lots of similarities to Star Wars ep V, but ends on a more hopeful note.

Third one: Will end happily. I expect the writers to rip off some material from The Odyssey for this one.

On an unrelated and somewhat taunting note, I got to take a class on pirates this last quarter: http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/subdet.asp?srs=196789200&term=06S

Pirates 2 took in a record $132 million box office over the weekend, breaking Spider-Man's record.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060709/ap_en_mo/box_office

I didn't think it would make this much money but my brother was telling me that it might after we checked out the movie. It makes sense considering it's a Disney film and so many kids and families enjoyed the first film that it had a great shot at making a huge opening weekend number, but I didn't expect this. I checked it out on Friday afternoon and most of the shows ended up selling out that day. I enjoyed the first film and I thought the second was just as good with some spectacular action scenes. DuelLadyS, that's a pretty good comparison with Star Wars as I never thought about it that way. Yeah, and let's hope no ewoks, the natives were crazy enough in this flick.

So much POTC 2 hate going on. Jesus. You people are nuts. I don't understand where it came from. Is it because so many people liked the first? All I keep reading and hearing (from a couple people) is that oh Johnny Depp is in it and Orlando Bloom and all the girls love them. fuck that shit. Just because an actor is in it that girls' like does not make it a bad movie. And to the person who mention a shirtless Orlando Bloom. fuck you! It worked in the film and does not make it passion of the pirate or brokeback pirate or any shit like that.

This movie was as good if not better than the first and the 2 1/2 hours pass by like it was nothing. You people can stuff it with your Paris Hilton and remakes.

It did seem a bit out of character, but Swann seems to have a much more rebellious side in this movie, doing a lot more fighting and such. Seems like she enjoys the free-spirited nature of sparrow but wants to know he has a good side.. It'll be interesting to see where they go with it in the 3rd movie.
