I agree and disagree.
On one hand, I did a year of math without a calculator (by choice), because I knew that it would improve my skills, and I would have to be able to do math quickly. I still can. But I always had a calculator nearby if there was something that required it (mainly square roots)
On the other hand, being able to do math quickly has got me very little in life, other than perhaps being the only person who can calculate a tip in 2 seconds without a calculator, or doing really well on the GRE math (basically the SAT for grad school) which doesn't allow one. Neither is that necessary in my field, the same with all the science crap I learned in HS. I have never needed to know a particular isotope or anything ever.
