CAGiversary!
Hi, I just started playing Mass Effect the other day, and while I'm enjoying it, I find the size and "open quality" of the game to be a little daunting. I'm used to more structured and linear Japanese RPGs.

Does anyone have any advice for me as I play Mass Effect? Is there anything I need to keep an eye out for or be sure I do in order to do well at the game and enjoy it? Thanks in advance.

Well your in for a treat, Mass Effect is great. I would just suggest slowly going through the game doing all the side quests. While your on the Citidel run around and talk to everyone and you will find a ton of side missions you can do. This will make the game a lot more fun and you can level up your characters along the way. If you find you enjoy these types of games you must get Oblivion. It is probably my favorite game of all time..

Thanks for the advice. Do you know if the little expansion quest is worth purchasing for Mass Effect? It's $5, I think, right?

When you can select where you want to go and you have 3 choices for the main quest, find the Dr. first, inspect the colony second, and do the snow planet last.

That's a good order. I did that on almost every playthrough.

Sidequests are fun, but don't try to do them all at once or you'll get burned out. Do a few between each story mission to avoid this, and also because otherwise you'll blow through the story really quickly.

Figure out which one weapon each ally will specialize in and then only put points into that. I made the mistake of giving Ashley points in both assault and sniper rifles, thinking I'd switch her between them and I never did.

Enjoy the game! It was hands-down my favorite game of 2007 and the only game to really pull me in in a long time.

There are plenty of helpful guides on GameFAQs.com and Xbox360Achievements.org that will help you keep track of what you're doing.

Stick with it.

I have played just about every RPG out there, from ones that point you from a to b, to games so open that you have no idea what the hell you are doing even up to the end of the game.

With a game like this, the more you play it the more you become familiar with your surroundings and names of people. It really does get easy to follow later in the game. The beginning of Mass Effect really is there to get you use to the game. Some give up on it because the first 5 or so hours drag a bit and does not have any real direction. Once you get off the planet things really start to shine.

If you like the more structured style, fear not because actually the game, once you start landing on different planets, really starts to guide you by the hand. You can choose to follow this, or go off on all the side quest. The start of the game really is the most open part.

Also, give the game 15 hours or so before you download the extra level. It is short, barely worth the price, and only if you are a fan of the game. 15 hours in and you love the game??? Then download it and have fun.

This game really kicks into high gear the last 5-8 hours of the main story. My god that last part is awesome.

Yeah, seriously, stick with it. I'm a hardcore JRPG guy and I LOVE Mass Effect. It's one of my favorite games now. If you need that linearity, get the guide and follow the path in the guide (or follow an online guide). You don't need to read it to find the 'answers', just get the path to take. might help.

Dude, before playing MASS EFFECT, the last RPG I finished was...
get this...

FINAL FANTASY 7.

So, imagine how overwhelmed I was when I played it! But trust me, by the time you get off the Citadel, you will LOVE this game.

And remember, the makers of this game filled it with tons of side-missions (that are actually fun), tons of details to characters, amazing dialogue, and just other factors to completely immerse you into its world.

PLEASE don't get discouraged by the immensity of this game, like the CAGs are saying; stick with it, explore it,...and level up your sniper rifle :)

Thanks for all the advice. I'm off the Citadel now, and I'm really enjoying the game a lot.

If you are planning on doing multiple play threws with the same character you can not put any points toward intimidate or charm and let your character gain those automatically based on your choices. It also adds something each time you play, like last time you couldnt get a npc to do this or that and this time you can. It also frees up some points that you can use to max out your char. its at least worth thinking about imo
