PlayStation 4 - General Discussion Thread
Uncharted 2 is my absolute favorite game, but I'd much rather see a new Naughty Dog franchise on PS4 than Uncharted 4.
you are. its called The Last of Us. i could see them doing uncharted 4, the last of us 2 and 3 and maybe a new IP near the end of the life cycle... or maybe jak and daxter 4
Oh, I forgot whatever the hell that Media Molecule thing was that they showed at their conference with Move.

I would hope they are doin more than thaf though...
If you are referring to the Move controller used for sculpting and controlling puppets, I believe that was just a tech demo and not an actual game.
The Last of Us is on PS3. Is it coming to PS4 as well? Have they said that?
I have a hard time seeing a port of a PS3 game that should sell great coming to a new system 5 months later with a small install base. I could be wrong though.

I am so glad they are including a headset with the system. The one good thing about the 360 is that everyone had a headset so more people talked during online play which is a big plus to me. I enjoyed my 360 over my PS3 but I am really leaning towards PS4 this time around.

Agreed on both accounts, especially the headset. I still don't have one for my PS3.

I'm also leaning PS4 at this point, but don't plan on getting either at launch. Want to wait and see how things shake up. Have plenty of PS3 games, and a few 360 ones, to keep me occupied for a good while anyway.

I bought a headset for PS3 and ended up barely using it, so hopefully this doesn't drive pricepoint too much.  Speaking of price, we should know in about a week!

I'm really curious to see what the price will be. Patcher thinks it'll be $350 but I just can't see Sony going that low unless MS does... though with MS, it's unlikely since they bundle in a Kinect with the system (Patcher thinks the X1 will be $400, which seems reasonable).

Either way I don't see a price being announced at E3 for either. I would be seriously suprised if either had a non-subscription model under $400.

I wonder how much the Kinect itself costs. Current gen Kinect costs $100 and that was after the bells and whistles were removed which is what this gen Kinect is supposed to have. So if the Kinect itself costs $100+, the system would have to be $299 to meet this under $400 price point everyone is hoping for. I just don't see how that would be possible.

I'm also curious how much Live will cost. Adding in more services/improvements and bumping up the server count by 300,000; I don't know how you can charge the same without making the current service look overpriced.

I cant see paying more than 500$ for it. If it is more than that I will definitely be waiting for a price cut or Giftcard with system offer

Why not save it until E3? Especially if it's a lot smaller than the monster that is the Xbox One. It shouldn't matter that much but some people do care how slick a console looks.

I doubt it will be much smaller.  With the power they have they probably need big fans/heat sinks as well.

I do like consoles to look nice, but they don't have to be small to do so.  As long as it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb (looking at you GameCube) compared to the DVR, bluray player and receiver in the TV stand I don't much care.  Basically, as long as it's black and not too odd shaped I'm good to go.  So in that sense, the Xbox One design is fine by me since it's just another black rectangle and would fit right in.

Sony wins.
Can't be sure yet. I'd be shocked if they don't have a similar "it's up to the publishers" DRM policy. This really seems like something being driven by companies like EA, Ubisoft, Activision etc. Hard to imagine them being ok with Sony not letting them restrict used sales etc. when MS is. And Sony can't do with out CoD, Madden, AC etc. so they really couldn't say no to leaving it up to the publishers.

Sony did say the console would work without being online. But that's pretty dodgy semantics, and doesn't mean that certain games from certain publishers, for example, may not work if you don't go online so it can keep the license activated.

While all of that is likely true... everything on the Xbox One will have DRM because everything requires an internet connection every 24 hours, this has been confirmed: it is no longer a rumor. Some games on both systems will block used games (or put restrictions on being able to sell them), I won't buy those games. But the games that don't have those restrictions will most likely be DRM-free and will not require an internet connection on PS4.

This means in 15 years when Sony and Microsoft stop supporting the systems some games will be playable on PS4, nothing will be playable on Xbox One. I'm not concerned about the prices for games with DRM, I'm concerned about the control we are giving to Microsoft.

Bottom line is with the Playstation 4 it's up to the publishers whether they want to put any DRM in their games, with Xbox One it's up to the publishers whether they want to add more DRM than what Microsoft has already put in every game.

MS was pretty smart announcing their crap prior to E3, now the pressure is going to be on Sony to finally show their hand.

I'm still cautious but less optimistic now after all the rumors that it was the publishers that pushed this. I know Sony would have risked becoming Nintendo by giving some of the big publishers the finger on this, but it still would have been nice.

Hopefully the Japanese developers stay away from using the optional crap, I'll probably just avoid buying anything put out by EA, Ubisoft, Activision, and any other publisher until I can get a new copy for $10 or less.

The only thing worth considering is that this could certainly be modifiable for Microsoft since it sounds like it's a function of the OS (kinda like what Windows does to check that your copy of Windows is valid, only they're checking your account's game 'licenses'). While I don't necessarily believe that's in the cards for them, I assume they could very easily disable or extend the 24h call home if it suited them.

In any event, like everyone is saying it's up to Sony now to show their hand. This used game stuff doesn't affect me too terribly, but I am enjoying the show. I hope Sony makes it as unrestrictive as publishers will allow.

As long as Sony allows you to sell your used games on eBay/Amazon/etc. they will be getting my money. If they do pull the same crap as MS then it looks like I just wont be buying any games I am not 100% sure I would want to keep forever. I will not "sell" my used games to GameStop for $5-10 each ever again.

All Sony has to do to win this console war is come out and say they are not going to be at war with its consumers the way MS is.

The first is definitely true. Completely moot for me as I never keep old consoles around anyway. All I have right now is a PS3,360 and 3DS. I don't really play older games as I can't even keep up with current gen games. And when I get the itch to play an old game I'd rather just buy it again for cheap on a virtual console rather keep old consoles around to dig out every once in a blue moon. It does suck majorly for retro gamers who do keep old hardware and play it often though.

As for the bottom line, I'm not sure the facts are that clear yet. This could all just be DRM left up to the publisher. MS may have none on their first party games--one part of their release last night did say that they would allow the gifting of their titles for sure, and up to publishers for games they publish. So that's one inkling that they'll be less restrictive than some third party publishers.

Just have to wait and see how it pans out and whether Sony's system is much different.

Yeah, I doubt there is much Sony can/could do if the publishers are driving this.

I'll get hit by it as I don't give a crap about many Japanese published games and just play the big blockbuster games like Bioshock, Tomb Raider etc., as well as the first party stuff of course.

I'd love to see this happen and would pre-order and buy day 1 just to suppport them as long as it didn't cost more than $400

I can't see it though. I can't see MS doing this crap without knowing Sony was stuck doing it to. I suspect it was the big publishers like EA, Activision, Ubisoft etc. that really pushed for this.

A couple of people in the know over at Neogaf have said basic online play will remain free for the PS4. So that's good to hear assuming it's correct.

If I were Jack Tretton, I'd walk on stage and the first words out of my mouth would be, "PS4 does not require you to authenticate every 24 hours. However, we do require that you play your games, DRM free, every 24 hours."

He would win the console war without drawing a single sword.

that would get him a standing ovation. haha

That would be awesome.

Can't see it happening. Can say it for their first party games. But I imagine the big third party publishers have been telling Sony "Give us a way to DRM our PS4 games or we'll only put them on Xbone" to try to force them to at least leave it up to publishers.

Sony may add additional DRM options for publishers on PS4, but they don't have to. Publishers could easily have an "online pass" for the entire game on PS3 and Xbox 360. PS4 could work exactly like PS3 and publishers would still have a way of implementing DRM.

EA wouldn't have dropped online passes if that's the route it was going on PS4.

So something has had to change in terms of how they can DRM their games.

No matter what they're still going to have copy protection software on their disks, which I find to be perfectly acceptable. BD-Rom disks can last forever so long as they're taken care of. So long as they are reasonable I'll be picking up a PS4. If they go the MS route, then I'll just be sticking to the Wii U.

It's going to be really interesting to see what Sony decides to do. They chose a perfect time for their conference (6pm PST), so this could be a huge boon for them. They may still dominate Xbox in the rest of the world, but the United States has proven to be a bit problematic for the PS3.

So...just out of curiosity, how powerful is the PS4 CPU compared to the PS3's Cell? The Cell was 3.2GHz for the PPE (main core), and then there were 7 SPEs (also at 3.2GHz?), 1 of which was reserved for the OS I believe. The PS4 CPU has 8 cores at 1.8GHz each (rumored...) so would the PS4 CPU be slower than that PS3s? Or were the SPEs slower/less efficient?

Again, just curious. We already know the GPU is faster than the RSX in the PS3, so I'm just curious to see how the CPU stacks up.

Ugh I hate this week, theres just too much hype for my body to handle. Animal Crossing coming out, Nintendo and Sony's conferences, Last of Us coming Friday, AND FFXIV Beta starting Friday.

Either way, can't wait for the 3 hours to pass, I want to see what Sony has planned for Vita. And theres a few exclusives I'm hoping for

Things I want to see:

- $400 price point

- Dark Souls II announced for PS4

- Deep Down announced as Dragon's Dogma II for PS4

- Dispel any DRM rumors and clarify any outstanding questions

- Lots of surprises (chief among them a new IP from That Game Company)

- The Last Guardian PS4 launch title

See, people talk about Microsoft's gaming lineup but I think Sony's blows theirs out of the water. More original IPs, which is always exciting, and the obligatory upgrades on old franchises.

No DRM and a remotely decent used game set up will allow them to wreck M$ in this war. If they have the same used gaming format but no DRM and continued free PSN online play, they should still have a sizeable edge.

did you get the limited edition animal crossing 3ds xl too?

50 minutes before finding out if one of my favorite hobbies is dead as I knew it.
An interview with Peter Moore leads me to believe that the DRM decisions were not influenced by publishers, but he could be lying out his ass. Still, gives me reasonable doubt that Sony isn't on board with any of this nonsense.

Just read a rumor that PS4 will have 3 different skus, ranging from $400-$600.  If true, they'll have a huge advantage barring any DRM scheme.
