Sony and Nintendo now release first party games on friday. Not really sure why.
I love that they do this. Instead of buying a game and only getting a taste of it and then having to wait until the weekend to play it, I can now buy a game and play it all weekend basically uninterrupted.

Don't even think it's just anSony exclusive thing. Didn't Skyrim release on a Friday? 11-11-11? I just think some major games release on Fridays. I remember Uncharted 3 was released on a Tuesday.

Cool, was just curious why it would be friday. Just noticed it when I was looking at the release date.

Still deciding on if im going to buy it or just gf it.

I think the idea comes from the fact that most people play games on the weekend, so it just makes sense to try and sell them at the beginning of the weekend.

Honestly I've always felt that Tuesday was a random day to release things, Friday makes more sense to me personally, and it seems the trend is catching on a bit more as Blu-ray/DVD releases on Friday are becoming a bit more frequent as well.

I'm just making this up but I wonder if it was a ploy by the movie studios to try and separate the release dates for motion pictures (i.e movie theaters) and physical releases... and since film likely had more power then music and later video games the other two piggy backed on movies knowing that most consumers would already be in stores on Tuesday.

Of course this was before the internet.

And of course that could be 100% false.

Dont forget that alot of people get paid on friday! So its also make sense to release big games on a friday.... They want to get 1st dibs to our paychecks.

Never thought of it like that, there could definitely be a grain of truth in there somewhere!

I like it. Makes a lot of sense. Gonna give that as the reason why things release on tuesday if it ever comes up in conversation.

for dvd and cds:

Sales figures are released on Monday. If you release on a Tuesday you get a full week to get on the chart

If a Tuesday release is selling well, there still is time to order more before the weekend.

Shipments of music usually begin to arrive in stores on Thursday. That gives the stores time to coordinate special midnight sales on Monday evening, as opposed to Sunday, which is usually a shorter work day

I'd guess it's a combo of those two things.

Movie studios are never going to like Friday releases as they want people going to the theater to see their new releases, not staying home to watch a new movie they bought or rented on DVD/Bluray.  Opening nights and weeks are crucial as most movies are very front loaded in ticket sales and very few start of slowly and then do big business.

But the sales figures also likely play into the release dates as well and explain why movies are on tuesday rather than another non-Friday weekday.  I agree that music and games probably just piggy backed on movies with wanting to release on the same day to generate retail traffic.  I'm sure retail stores encouraged it as well so they can advertise all the new releases on the same day, along with that weeks loss leaders, to generate a lot of traffic from the weekly ads.

This link actually explains why games are released on a Tuesday, its a long read but its I say its worth.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-11-23-why-are-we-stuck-with-games-being-released-on-a-friday

If you didn't read it this sums it up.

"It started with music," famed US video game analyst Michael Pachter informs me, "then VHS tapes and DVDs. Retailers were very slow to stock shelves, so distributors asked for entertainment products to release on Tuesday so retailers could have them in stores by Friday when consumer traffic picks up.

Mercenary Kings coming out April 1st http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/03/12/mercenary-kings-coming-to-ps4-on-april-1st/

They were unpacking PS4s at Costco when I walked through the electronics section. Cracked and grabbed one since I had a $305 reward check from my Costco Amex.

Decent bundle with a second controller and a year of PS+ for $489.99.

Welcome to the club. Solid bundle plus Costco has a great return policy so you basically get to try it for free.

Yep. Though I won't return it beyond having defects as I've been set on PS4 as my next gen platform for quite a while. I also get some extra warranty from using my Costco Amex to pay for it(after the reward check).

Just sticking with the PS+ freebies for now. Need to clear out some PS3 stuff before getting to into PS4 games. Namely need to finish Beyond Two Souls, and play through at least Infamous 2 (if not the first one as well). I may grab Killzone or AC Black Flag relatively soon if I see $30-40 deals on them.

I'm going to move the PS3 to the second TV. It's an older 720p RPTV set, but the pic is still solid and I can game on it when the finacee is using the main TV (and can always use remote play on Vita for PS4 stuff.

Hahah Mr. Backlog simply could not resist, could he?

I'm still going on strong :)

Yep, I cracked.

I have the backlog mostly thinned out of must plays though. On PS3 I really just need to finish up Beyond Two Souls, and play the Infamous games--there I'm leaning toward just playing the 2nd one and ditching the first. I'd probably be burnt out and not want to play Second Son if I play both.

Then it's just some stuff like Metro Last Light, Brothers, The Unfinished Swan etc. that I need to check out. Mostly shorter stuff I can knock out. 3DS backlog I knocked out a month or two back. Wii U is just trying more with the extra (and much harder) levels in Mario 3D World and Rayman Legends.

I did just get a Vita recently too, and have a decent backlog there though with the PS+ freebies and buying P4G and Tearaway.

I need to thin out my hardware though. PS3 will definitely go once I get the couple must plays, and through whatever grabs me of the PS+ stuff. I'll chip away at that when the fiancee is using the main TV since I moved it to the secondary, older TV. I'll sell of one of the Nintendo systems for sure too. Probably wait until after E3 and see which has more announced that interests me.

Played through the first act of Contrast to break it in. Liking that a lot so far.

The DS4 is an awesome controller. The light bar is a bit annoying in a dark room with a reflective tv screen though. I may have to order some of those covers.

I also nabbed a like new copy of Killzone for $31.84 from Amazon Warehouse Deals and also ordered a controller charging dock as that's easier than hassling with USB cable and standby mode since the battery life is so much shorter than the DS3s.

I can in the forceable see future getting an update that shuts off the light for the move which I feel would increase the battery life 10 fold.

This.

There are some games that make silly use of it currently, like KZ, it goes from green to red to show your health getting low, but its basically useless if you dont plan to use it for move support.

Yeah they really should add an option to turn it off.

I kind of doubt that has much to do with battery life since led's use little power though.

Yeah I was wanting to play it right away to have something to show off what the system can do more than the download games. Already shipped and should be here tomorrow.

I'm on spring break next week, so good time to get the system and some games. Have a bunch of research work to catch up on, but not teaching will mean some more free time for games.

Yeah, I think if you play that much of the same game that close to each other, you'll get burnt out on it so I agree about skipping one of the games at the very least. Having played both inFamous games though, I liked part 1 slightly better but that's skewed since you always downgrade the sequel once you get accustomed to the fresh gameplay after playing the original. If you plan on picking it up SS close to release, I would actually recommend you to skip parts 1 and 2 until a much later date. The stories may not even overlap anyways, but not sure at this point.

Also, you should be aware that the Costco rewards is most likely not a form of payment covered by AMEX. I asked a representative a few years ago about what happens when I combine payments between gift cards and credit cards with respect to warranty coverage and they explained to me that AMEX will only cover your warranty claim from months 13 - 24 UP to the amount that was paid by the credit card. Therefore they would reimburse you only $100 if your rewards check was $300. I didn't ask about reward certificates, but I'd expect it would work the same way as if it was a gift card.

But congrats on the purchase. I anticipate buying one myself during this summer after I fully pay off a school loan.

I probably won't grab Second Son anytime soon.  I try not to buy single player stuff at launch as there's just no rush to get to it and it will be cheaper in a few months.  Especially in this case since I want to play at least one of the first couple games before hand.

Good to know on the Amex warranty.  Still better than nothing.  And maybe I could get more since I bought around $200 worth of other stuff that trip too, so they may not be able to argue that the whole $300 reward check went toward the PS4. :D

You bought it from Costco. You've got nothing to worry about. I have read stories on slickdeals of people returning xbox 360 to pick up the slim model and a $200 GC.

So how many are picking up Second Son at release? I still have infamous 2 to get through (and I didn't love the 1st one) so I'm gonna wait for a sale.

Really need to finish Lightning Returns and AC4 before this game comes out...

I'm picking it up, this is one of my most anticipated games releasing this year. Also, anyone know when the reviews will start rolling out? I'm really hoping it does well.

It will be glorious. Even though I'm in the middle of playing Titanfall, I can't wait to get my hands on Infamous. My guess is that reviews will come out early next week. Maybe even this weekend if Sony feels confident about it.

Have it preorder, Super excited for this game. I enjoy both 1 & 2! I can't wait to see what the other powers will be. Anyone have any guesses? In the IGN gameplay, it showed an enemy having some sort of Rock power. So I'm thinking that could possibly be something.

In an interview with IGN, one of the creators said it is going to be very different from the previous two because they have now been able to do everything they originally wanted thanks to next gen.

Needless to say, I preordered it this week!  :)  can't wait!  Next Gen finally here!

Also how will all of you be playing? Good or evil?
I haven't looked in the details about the karma system, but if the past two games in the series are any indication, it will require at least 2 playthroughs to get all the trophies. I actually liked that aspect; it's like experiencing two different storylines in the same game. I've platted the last two by being a goodie-two-shoes on my first playthrough and then being a total dick for my second. Will likely tow that same line if everything about karma is the same.

Don't have it pre-ordered but I'm getting close with my Sony Rewards points to have it fully paid for by the end of March.

I don't have experience with it myself since I obtain my consoles with funny money at other places but last BF while waiting in line at Target, the dude next to me told me how he recently returned his RROD 360 at Costco to get full return value years after his purchase there. We were both unsure how that worked since the return period is officially down to 90 days but he said they processed his return anyway ::shrug::

inFamous is more tedious to play with "Good" kharma since you can't kill civilians and keep up the "Good." When you're in the middle of objectives, civilians get in the way so it's easier to just blow through anything and play with "Bad" kharma. You don't have to worry about maintaining your kharma as "Bad" whenever you're tossing grenade powers towards enemies while anybody nearby can get caught up in the mix :)

So I've been using the Dualshock 4 since Nov/Dec (no PS4, used on PS3) and I feel I can give a better 'first impressions' on it now. First, I absolutely love it. The new D-pad curve down in middle fits the thumb great. The analog sticks feel great and the grove was a good addition. The L2/R2 triggers are awesome and can rest fingers there fine, and no slipping when pressing them down like DS3. The 4 face buttons are a little closer together which makes it easier to hit one then the other. The size and grip are good. I hear the battery life is bad, but I have it plugged in via 6ft cord. Also no glow when using on PS3. The PS button is in the same spot, that matters. And a headphone jack (normal jack!) is right there on the controller. The touchpad seems bad because I can't tell if I'm hitting the middle or left/right 'button' when clicking it down, but have never used it in a game yet (no PS4).

Now for my gripes. The select and start buttons are horrible. I still call them that because I'm using the controller on a PS3 and I have to hit select for map and start for pause/options etc. After 3-4 months, my thumbs still struggle to find them, I have to look down at the controller to hit them. This isn't cool. They just don't stick out so I'm either pressing nothing or the touchpad and the game isn't responding so I have to look down and finally press the start/select. Maybe I'll get used to it one day, but I really don't like those share/options buttons.

As for the R1 button, some games I've been playing have you hold down the R1 and it's very cramped if you also have to be using the face buttons. Small issue if you can just remap to R2, but just something to think about.

Consoles do not fall under the 90 day return period. I had this confirmed by my local store manager.

Agreed. IMO, DS4 is light years ahead of DS3. My only gripes are battery life, my sticks are starting wear and the L1 button is starting to stick. I know there have been a few other CAGs that have experienced some of these issue as well. Otherwise, the DS4 is greatly improved over the DS3.

NPD is only the United States, the sales divide between the two is actually quite larger. It still amazes me that Xbox lost the US. Even my cousins and step-brothers who are huge Xbox 360 fans made the switch to PS4.
Yeah, i think Sony is up at least 2 million world wide or something. Though the sales in Japan hasn't been strong and its actually selling slower than when the Wii U launched.

The NPD numbers are great for both. The Xbone had a nice comeback after that horrid January they had. I expect them to come out on top for March though with Titanfall. I would be very surprised if they didn't.
Eh, i dunno. People are buying Titanfall but people don't seem to be buying Xbox One to play titanfall. At least in my area stores are still fully stocked with Xbox Ones while PS4s are still hard to find. And PS4 does have Infamous coming out.

Good points, but I still feel they'll edge out Sony for March.
