PlayStation 4 - General Discussion Thread

Well part of it is anyways...

Not so sure about that statement in regards to Nintendo, last few qtrs for their financials are pretty bleak.
nintendo has no one else to blame but themselfs. Nintendo for some reason still think's we gamers what gimmicks like 3d/motion gamepads oh don't forget a giant touch screen pad on home console.

PS4 to get editing software and you'll be able to transfer your videos over to usb so you can presumably upload them to youtube.

3DS is still doing very well.
i never use the 3d to play games i wish they did a 2ds that folds up i would get that instead.

i really love what these new next gen systems are doing with game clips and streaming. Kind of takes away buying the expensive set up to do youtube videos and stream games live.

Holy shit, I did not see that coming at all. Even with their most hyped game and all the sales/gift cards/bundles they STILL could not top Sony. Damn son.

Titanfall was the best selling game and then it was Infamous but 2 things to consider, Infamous came out 10 days later and Titanfall was on PC and Xbox One. They don't give numbers but id like to see how big the gap was.

PS4 sold 60k more units.

Microsoft has updated to say they have "shipped" 5 million units worldwide why the PS4 has SOLD 7 million world wide so there is quite the gap starting to build. By how many Xbox ones are sitting around stores id think the actual number sold is between 4-4.5 million.

MS really needs to drop the Kinect and undercut the PS4 in price before this gap gets even wider. Im still legit shocked the PS4 came out on top with all the Titanfall hype. Respawn/EA must be kicking thmeselves right now. It would have been a huge seller on the PS4.

Freudian slip? lol

im glad EA/Respawn took the money to make it exclusive, this way no other company will be dumb enough to accept MS' money to make their game exclusive.

Xbox

  • US (Home turf)
  • $50 unofficial drop
  • Gave away their juggernaut next gen game Titanfall
  • Big hype, and marketing
  • Sold 311k units
vs

Sony

  • MSRP
  • No free game
  • Infamous Second Son
  • Little hype, and marketing
  • All we know is that it sold more, Sony didn't disclose how many units.
Smooth sailing on all NPDs from this point on until Halo 5 for Sony?

it came out in a story done my geoff from spike tv that microsft saved the life of titanfall Ea almost canned the game seeing the funding was not there. it even came out that sony did not want to discuss the ps4 with respawn when they came to sony talk talk about their new system.

1 Million copies of inFamous: Second Son sold and 7 million Playstation 4 sold to date is pretty good. Hopefully these numbers convince studios to go full on into the 8th generation and make more Playstation 4 games!

Next month should make for an interesting E3!

Thinking about picking up two games today for my (new) PS4. Right now I'm deciding between the following, would like some thoughts;
  • Battlefield 4
  • Need for Speed Rivals
  • Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
  • Trials Fusion ($20 digital version)
  • other (open to suggestions)
Also, I read somewhere that Respawn approached Sony and Insomniac Games about a PS4 version, but Sony said "how abotu the PS Vita" so Respawn used the Ratchet & Clank engine to demo Titanfall on the PS Vita. Didn't go anywhere, but kind of cool that Sony was willing to put the Vita ahead of the PS4 int his case.

I'm still amazed that Sony beat the X1 by 60,000 units. That said, Titanfall just didn't appeal to me. It's clear they tried forcing this down people's throats and it didn't work.

If you have PS+ definitely grab the free game of the month in Mercenary Kings. I have prob put over 40 hours into this gem. It's like borderlands meets metal slug and it is a damn good game. It has tons of nods to classic games like Castlevania, Metroid, Contra, etc. And make sure to read the description of the gun names, they are clever as hell, like one is called the "Spartan" and the description is something like "for a real demolition man." Good stuff if you get the reference! And the soundtrack is also top notch.

From what I read PS4 sold 60k more than the X1.
Wow considering that the unofficial price drop was in place with their big game free, this is actually really surprising. I mean I was expecting the PS4 to have strong sales numbers but thought that March would be the first month that it was outsold (then in April it again be #1). The fact that the Xbox One couldn't surpass PS4 sales is amazing. We're going to see $400 Xbox One consoles this year with a game packed in. Hopefully this forces Sony to pack a game in during the holidays even though they're selling better. At some point you have to compete for those customers that only want one console even if you're selling better.

Details on next PS4 update: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/04/16/ps4-update-1-70-coming-soon-introducing-sharefactory/

I don't care about the sharefactory thing, but this part is awesome:

"In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for."

HD video capture on the PS4!

For me, I think the most exciting part of the upcoming PS4 update (detailed here: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/04/16/ps4-update-1-70-coming-soon-introducing-sharefactory/) is this:

Finally we get to see HD quality PS4 gameplay!

Out of those I'd say AC and Need For Speed, but if you're looking for any 2 I'd go with Knack and Infamous.

? Just like ps3 ps4 had work around to use stuff to take video from ps4.

Yup, but this way there's no need for a workaround. When I get my PS4, I don't need to buy any extra devices/cables. Just plug and go. :)

I don't think a lot of normal people (i.e., non-professional Youtubers) know about the workaround or care to do it. I've seen PS4 gameplay where they talk about not being able to cap in HD or waiting for Sony to release an update that will turn off HDCP.

For me, I'm just glad I don't need to research and buy anything extra.

not actually true the way you are spinning it..

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-04-17-sony-wanted-a-playstation-vita-version-of-titanfall

"Armed with the specs for the Xbox Durango platform, Respawn pushed forward on game development. At the same time the team quietly reached out to Sony to see if it could share any information on the next PlayStation, another target platform. Respawn quickly found out that Sony wasn't ready to talk about its plans for PS4. Instead, Sony offered to help with developing a version of R1 for the handheld PlayStation Vita platform."
The truth was they were not far enough into it to divulge stuff to outside people just yet and they were saying we still want to help you guys and offered up the Vita. Trust me, if Respawn and EA knew what was going to happen with sales, they would have waited for Sony and gone multiplat, but I can get where they came from when Microsoft offers EA money upfront.... they go for the money.

But I guarantee that Respawn and EA are now thinking the future and the Titanfall franchise will go multiplat.

I so hope it doesn't, I really do not want another Gen of 60% shooters 39% yearly iterations of sports games and 1% of new good IP's. With "indie's" becoming more of a "thing" now I doubt it will but looking back at some of the horrible shit we got last gen..

Played the hell out of aciv, if you like ac games, its the best one they have made. Hands down.

I recently got Rivals and have really enjoyed it so far. Something you might not like about it, its basically online all the time. You can play offline pretty sure, but if you go between online and offline, they are seperate, meaning stuff unlocked while online or offline doesnt transfer to the other. Hopefully that makes sense.

Its a really fun game to me though. Can be found on AWD for 30sih.

Of course it will and it should. I don't think any 3rd party game should be on one system

Anyone that thinks that a 3rd party developer is looking out for Microsoft or Sony is foolish.  They make deals and do what they think is best for themselves.  They have their own stockholders and their own business to run.  They need to make a profit and try to increase it yearly.  EA thought that Microsoft would roll into the next gen with a lead in the West since they're leading in the West with the 360.  They screwed up.  The backlash from the DRM debacle has been more damaging to Microsoft than the corporate drones thought it would be.  They were almost certainly under the impression that it would be some "Internet petition" bullshit where a small group of avid fans gather together to try to convince a company to change policies.  They didn't think most of the gaming community would turn their back on Microsoft.  Some have returned but far fewer than had left.

I can tell you right now that if the Xbox One had been a REAL cable box with a REAL DVR inside then I would have bought it.  It would have allowed me to save $18/month on my cable box if it was a REAL cable box.  Instead it's not a cable box.  It's a new UI.  Then of course there's the DRM debacle.  They can't recover first place until the Xbox One 2.

That was a big missed opportunity on their part, I agree.

If it had a bigger hard drive and a cable card slot, the tv stuff would have been a lot more appealing to a lot of people. One less box under the TV, no pricey Cable company DVR rental/service fees or Tivo fees/lifetime subs to pay for etc. Just include it in the price of Xbox Live gold to give the service more value to people who don't game online much.

AWD doesn't exist for Canada I believe :(

It's almost a no-brainer at that point. I'm paying 18/month for my cable company dvr. A cable card is $4/month. My DVR has a 500GB hard drive so they could have put in 1TB and partitioned it 500GB for DVR and 500 for games. If someone chose to use it for only games then they could reallocate all to games. It would have saved me $14/month. It would have paid for itself in 3 years at $14/month savings.

I don't understand why they didn't do it, the machine has to be more powerful than a TiVO right?

edit: Just looked it up, they raised the cost for a cable card to $5 so it would take 3.5 years to break even. Even then it's well worth it as I would probably keep using the Xbox One as the DVR for well into the 8-10 year range, saving me up to $1,000 after break even. Instead they just created a UI.

Black Flag for sure. I loved it and I think there is a noticeable graphic upgrade from 360/PS3 to PS4. I'd pick up Rivals or Second Son as your other game.

Id say SS is more of a rental. Not very long if you want to just play it and beat the main story, which is basically what I did. Didnt like it enough to do two playthroughs, so paid like 5 dollars to rent it (48 with GCU and then traded back at 44)

LOL. guys guys! Titanfall would have been cancelled if it wasnt for microsoft saving its ass! OKAY?!?
I was going off of Geoff long article he wrote with inside info was not me talking. A lot of people respect what that guy writes. But of course you guys would say it's all false. Sony screwed them selfs by not getting titanfall. Why would they even offer respawn a vita version and not do at least ps3.

I'm hoping Titanfall not moving consoles means the online shooter craze may be calming down some.

Those games will no doubt remain the most popular, but maybe we'll get some more variety in AAA games is everyone isn't trying to make the next CoD all the time.

Maybe having a Japanese console leading the market again will help that as well.

I hope you are right but I wouldn't look to Japan for the next big thing. Console gaming is dead in Japan at this point.

Titanfall being a X1 exclusive hurt its overall sales. It would have easily moved another million units if it was released on PS4. I think shooters are the "IT" genre until something else tops them on a regular basis. COD's success is unparalleled especially when you consider that it releases annually and sells in the tens of millions. The last 5 releases have combined to sell over 100 million copies. There is no surer bet in gaming right now that COD. To use a sports analogy, COD is Mariano Rivera.

How so? Last I checked Sony didn't have Titanfall and yet they appeared to be doing quite well despite this...
