I only partially played one Persona/SMT game 15 years ago. Don't even remember which one.

With P5 coming to GamePass quite soon, and the others a while later, am I safe to assume the games are only mildly connected (like Final Fantasy, for instance) and I'd be fine to start out with 5 versus waiting for 3 and 4?

Yes, they all play similarly, but there is no ongoing narrative between 3, 4, and 5. So, I'd say you're good.

Every persona game js better than the last. 4 was a big step up from 3 and 5 even better.

Gameplay, story, characters, writing. persona 5 was so perfect I’m not sure they should even bother making persona 6

Yeah. Plotwise, characterwise, they aren't connected at all. Persona games have the same framework. The game design and playthrough progression are all highly congruent. The games are structured very similarly but you don't need any prior knowledge, references, or previous background to get a better experience out of any Persona game. You can start wherever you want.

5 is the best, and the most refined. I'd probably recommend Persona 5 for any newcomer to the series, or anyone who wants to get into just one game.
OTTH, it's probably going to be hard to go back to dated game design of the older titles once you've started the modern one. It will feel like a huge step backwards. So if you were planning to play them all then you should probably play them in order. If you enjoy PS2 era style gameplay and control (the jrpgs, MGS2) then Pesona 3 is a good jumping off point. 3 and 4 are also from virtually the same dev era.

But it would be poor advice to tell someone new, "you need to play 3, 4 and then 5". That's overwhelming, and too much.

Think like....Mario 1, 2 and 3. Would you tell someone (in 1990) who wanted to play Mario 3 that they need to become intimate with and complete #1 first? I dunno about that. It's kinda the same type of thing. Someone who began their childhood on Mario 3 probably isn't going to get very much out of going back to Super Mario Brothers though either.

It appears that all of the DLCs for the game Lego DC Super-Villains are free to claim on PSN at the moment.  I don't know for how long.

There are minor cameos in Persona 4 from P3 characters btw. Nothing major but it's there to connect the 2 games, though you can play through P4 and not even notice it.

Personally, 3 is still my favorite, followed by 4 and then 5. P3 Portable is especially good because of the female protagonist option, a battle system that was tweaked to be more similar to P4's superior battle system, and a more streamlined world map. A lot of people don't like that last change because you can't walk around and explore the city, but I feel it saves so much time and you're not really missing out on much anyway. Unfortunately, P3 Portable is missing FES, which I guess will forever be stuck on the PS2 now and forgotten.

imo the characters in P3 were more down-to-earth and less anime-annoying than the following 2 games. Even the usual animal mascot character was just a sweet silent, realistic dog, while later on we got that over-the-top weirdo Teddy and that insufferable bossy cat Morgana.

All the games have aged well and can be played in any order. I've returned to P3 Portable after 5 and it's still a great game. Sure some of it is a little dated and not as flashy as the other two, but ultimately it's still a one of the best PSP games that's also a port of one of the best PS2 games.

P3 is my favorite too.  But I was more concerned with responding to his question, and that particular point-of-view.

I could say to someone "OMG YOU NEED TO PLAY PERSONA 3 FIRST," but I don't necessarily believe that's true.  Someone doesn't need to play 300 hours of games in order to experience a game, or start a new series.

Did you read that he unenthusiastically quit (likely Persona 3) the last time he tried the series 15 years ago?  Yeah some people won't take to PS2 era gameplay.  It didn't do it for him then so I don't believe that experience would be much improved today.

Persona 5 (Royal) is the Final Fantasy 7 (at the time of release) of the series.  People who weren't even in to the SMT universe got pulled in by it.  It is by far the best starting point.

You’re literally thinking of Persona 3, though. The Megami Tensei IP was pretty obscure in the West until P3 came out, then suddenly Atlus was popular.

I really can't remember which game it was. Best guess is maybe Digital Devil Saga, but I'm not 100% sure. That's at least the right era.

Sounds like I'd be fine to start with 5 when that comes out, and I might check out the others eventually. Thanks, all.

They have references and or cameos in the case of p3 for p4 and vice versa but otherwise they don't directly connect to each other story wise. So it's safe to play them without having any order.

The biggest thing between them is that p3 had you explore dungeons at night and doesn't have skill selection via fusion. 4 and 5 relegated dungeons to daytime which was a terrible idea. Neither replaced night time segments with more content.

4 vanilla while not having skill selection did have your 2 party members lose weaknesses when the link increases to a certain level.

Got a PS5 today thanks to FB Marketplace. $600 for disc version and 3 controllers. I'm surprised Ratchet and Clank isn't in PS+ collections, pity. Looking forward to Iron Man VR with more stable performance.

What's the cheapest way for Spiderman Remastered? I'm playing Miles Morales via Plus and there's a $20 unlock option but there's got to be something else I imagine.

First congrats and second nope that is the only way to get spiderman remastered. I've never seen it go on sale so I'm assuming $20 will always be the price for it. I will say I think $20 is worth it for the performance raytracing mode it's beautiful.

PSN credit do get get discounted especially during the holiday.
If you have a pro membership at gamestop you can get $5 off a PSN card every month too. I don't even have to go into a store to do it anymore. First or second of every month I just go on the site add a $10 PSN card and then at checkout I can apply the pro $5 monthly coupon.

You can still get two $10 PSN ($20 total) for $10 every month after coupon by doing it in-store first and then online immediately. Just make sure to screenshot the $5 off code (via GS app) before going into a store. The $5 off coupon code disappears from the app once you used it in-store.

Personally I prefer to do my stealing the old fashioned way... nothing beats a good ol ski mask and a pointed finger in your pocket... but you do you.

More of a loophole than stealing IMO

Also, Gamestop has been stealing from customers since their inception. Any chance to tax their ass should be taken. Just my opinion.

I’ve played MK11 twice and the campaign still shows zero percent on ps stars
Did you play online at all or just by yourself? I was facing a similar issue and then watched a video where the narrator mentioned it only registers after you play online. I didn't really feel like playing PvP so I gave it a shot on the "KO-OP" towers and it worked, even with the other player backing out before we even played a match meaning I essentially did nothing.

Only vs the cpu, I’ll try an online match, thanks.

Solid set of numerous additions. Obviously heavy on DQ and AC (not necessarily a bad thing given the large number of games in those series), but there's a smattering of other games at least. Sad that they are just flat-out refusing to offer Syndicate and the AC Chronicles games on PS5 rather than fixing them. Aside from that, only complaint is a lack of PS1/PSP/PS2 stuff.
Better than September (which was way better than the shit in August), hopefully they keep it up.

Lowest price ever on Tekken 7 Definitive Edition. Might check it out. Also lowest price ever on Kandagawa Jet Girls, haha.

Releasing a "limited edition" God of War: Ragnarok PS5 faceplate should have been a no-brainer, but I forgot we're still in Sony's lazy phase.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force demo impressions:

To sum it all up meh is my main feeling.

I played the PS5 demo, but it's not optimized for PS5. Even under the performance setting there was some slowdown in battle, which for the graphics is kind of unacceptable. This is a PS4 game through and through, but I wont count it against it. The graphics are average looking and could have been on the PS3 even. The models for non main characters are laughably generic and feel out of place next to the main characters. All the terrain is really just OK and generally bland overall. The main characters also feel very generic and bland looking. They do stand out a little with their outfits at least. The effects in battle are also PS4 quality. The music is generally good, but some of it is very generic. The town themes are decent though.

The controls are good for the most part although there is a lot of menus that are somewhat slow loading at times (pauses here and there on the PS5). In combat everything just feels free form and not as clean to control. It's not as easy to see tells to dodge unless it's a huge enemy attack. You get a new mechanism outside of battle and in it for movement and it generally works well to explore this vast generic land.

The systems for the game are good for the most part. There is a lot of fluff in level ups with a grid system similar to Dragon Quest 11, but with what seems to be less customization. You can go anywhere on the grid, but the level up points aren't a lot, so unlocking on the grids is slow. The combat system has this combo system thing where skills learned can be applied to part of the combo for three of the buttons. This works okay enough, but some skills don't seem combo worthy like magic ones and really weird charging ones and such. It's a way to get a variety of skills going, but it's clunky for sure. You can also upgrade a companion you get with gems you find, and this is mainly fluffy, but can help out a little in battle. You see enemies out in the field so you can choose to fight them or not.

The story is as basic a Star Ocean story as can be. You play a captain and the ship goes down leading you to be on a more underdeveloped planet. Then you adventure on the planet with the people you meet. It's not too exciting and there was no big revelations in the demo. The characters seem very one note right now with a curious princess, a young rebel captain guy, and the princess' overprotective steward. They are bland and generic, but not the worse. I can see potential for the main character and probably the princess, but the other guy is just there. There will be more playable characters, but what was here wasn't exciting.

Overall I feel the game should feel a little more optimized to not have slowdown in combat and sometimes on the field with the generally simpler graphical system. Nothing is exciting here, and I feel this is going to be a very generic game overall. It feels lesser budget and I love Star Ocean (1-3 mainly). I don't think it's going to review well. I would give it a 6.5/10 right now, which on my scale is good and playable, but not exciting. I hope it comes out better than what I played.
