[POLL] In your opinion, is the PS2 dead?

Well I still have about 15 or 20 rpgs that I have in my backlog for the PS2, so it won't be dead for me anytime soon; just need to pry myself off my 360 and PC games long enough to actually play them.

However, I honestly don't think many companies are looking at releasing any top tier titles for the PS2 anymore. Been some pretty good games that have come out recently, but it does seem that the bulk of the titles are turning into second rate ports of what you'd find on a next gen system. Since the sales are definitely going to be lacking for those titles when an increasing number of people own a next-gen platform that can play a superior version, it's just a matter of time before they stop making them too. Probably won't be long before the majority of titles are weak ports of sports games.

Ar Tonelico 2 and Mana Khemia 2 are probably the only two unique titles that are will be coming out in the next year that I'll end up getting for the PS2. Even then, I'll most likely be buying those used.

You are not getting Sakura Taisen V? :(

I would say the PS2 has several more years of support from Sony and developers mostly Atlus and a few other Japanese developers who don't see the fanbase as of yet on the PS3.

Also with the way Sony is cutting back in a lot of their divisions they are looking for cash cows and the PS2 still fits that bill nicely.

As long as the next Guitar Hero and Rock Band come out for the PS2, it'll still sell.

I think it will slowly die in 2010, but still sell well in 2009. The system is cheap, graphics are still decent, and the games are relatively cheap (new and used).

In this economy now, with people having or wanting to spend less money, getting an older game system is a good way to go for gaming. Why buy one new game at $60 or used for $55, when you can get 6 good $10 PS2 games.

I have a PS2, a PS3 (use it mainly for blu-ray and PS2 games) and a Xbox 360. I haven't bought too many next-gen games, not because they don't appeal to me, but because they are friggin' expensive. I just can't see myself buying a game for $60 unless it comes with a cool preorder bonus like artbook or soundtrack (I'm still waiting on a pricedrop for Eternal Sonata PS3 version). With the PS2, $40 for a new game is pretty reasonable.

The last game I bought for full retail was Digital Devil Saga 1 from Amazon for $40. Before that I hadn't bought a full-priced game in at least two years. Nor do I ever plan to again. I have a mean back log of some 150+ games just for the PS2, never mind Xbox, Gamecube, and N64. I won't be participating in the current gen until it's two gens old at this rate!
