I asked this question in another thread, but I figured it would be a good idea to start a new thread with a poll so I could keep track of the results. Here's my question:

Does anyone have a recomendation for a good first Pokemon game for GBA/GBC? I pretty much missed all of the games. Back when they first came out I always felt that I was too old to be playing the pokemon games so I never gave them a try, but I've been hearing a lot of good things about them so I figured I might as well give one a try, and I'm old enough now to really not give a rat's ass about the whole "kiddy" association that the games have. Also I will be playing this game by myself, since I HIGHLY doubt any of my friends will ever get one of these games. Cost doesn't seem to be much of an issue, since all of these are about the same price.

I think you should work your way from the old to the new. That would be red/blue, yellow, gold/silver, crystal, ruby/sapphire, and the revised Fire Red/Leaf Green that's soon to come out.

Yellow. Why? im not quite sure, but thats the one i bought and played and enjoyed it thourghly. If anything, start with Yellow/Blue/Red and work up.

i've had blue, red, yellow, silver, and the trading card game one...my favorite is pokemon blue...i traded silver and lost the red one :( it just feels really fresh when u start a new game, doesnt it guys? :D

Get Ru/Sa unless you're not sure you're going to like the games. If you like the games, getting the newest ones will make your life easier when Leaf/Fire come out in September, and you can reuse all of the Pokemon you spent your time building up.

Id go with the originals...Then you get more of a feel of "where it all started" I think the new ones...given I havent played much of Ruby or Saphire...they just are too repetitive...They just take the old ones beef em up and put some new pokemon in...Your starting the pokemon game and your a cheapass so go with the cheapest ones you can find :)

Thanks everyone that responded. I ended up going with Gold, I'm pretty sure it's the exact same as silver and for some reason it was 5$ cheaper then silver.

Nah, you should have gone with Red/Blue/Yellow. After that they added unnecessary gimmicks to the game. Of course, playing an old Pokemon game will be somewhat unsatisfactory, at least for me; half the fun came from trading and battling with friends at lunchtime.

i think its either YELLOW, or CRYSTAL. because you can actually "catch'em all" like what goldengram said, and in yellow, its the first 151 pokemon, and crystal is 256? yea. :) crystal also lets you choose MALE character or FEMALE, so it wouldnt make a sexiest controversy thing. nice ey? i would go with crystal. i dont like ruby and sapphire cause if you cant remember all the earth's animals, how are you sappose to remember like 500 pokemon?! work your way up frm yellow to crystal, if not get crystal if you wanna get started right away
