I absolutely have to agree with this. Bubba Ho-Tep is great. Come on, it's got Bruce Campbell...how could it not be? :D

My favorite Movies (That no one saw):

True Romance : All time favorite.

Leon - The Professional : Get the "LEON" version....it has an added 30 mins that rock.

What Dreams May Come : great movie....

eXistenZ: This movie was a great Sci Fi with Jude Law before he got big.

Gattaca: Was an awesome ScI FI too.

I forgot to mention the opposite of sex, starring Christina Ricci. Also, the sci fi channel's Dune I find be better than the original movie made in the 80's. Though sfi fi channels children of dune blows their first dune out the water, though it helps to watch the first so you understand the second.

Also, watch Lexx. There's four movies and 3 seasons. You must watch lexx!

Ok', I've seen FAR too many obscure movies to mention but here's a list of realy great movies

The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra - it's a recent film done in the 50's & 60's style B sci-fi film. One of the funniest things I've seen in a long time.

The Golem - A silent film from the 20's about the Jewish legend of the Golem

The Daimajin Trilogy - A Japanese giant monster take on the Golem

CQ - An indy film a bout a sci-fi movie being shot in Paris in the 60's

Dog Soldier - A Scotish film about werewolves

Dagon - one of the few horror films based on H.P.Lovecraft's work that doesn't suck.

Cannibal Holocaust the idea for the Blare Witch project came from this movie (watching the students from their own footage) WARNING this is an INCREDIBLY gruesome film, containing real footage of animal death. If you have a VERY strong stomach it's worth it.

Cold Dog Soup - a dark comedy about a guy trying to get rid of his dead dog when he gets the idea from a cabbie to sell it for meat.

I could go on forever, but I'll leave it at that for now.

I definately second 12 Angry Men whoever said that. Great movie with a very talented cast. And I do mean the original, not the 1997 made for TV movie. The one with Henry Fonda.

I also just rented a movie that I haven't seen anybody mention. It just came out on DVD. It's called Stander. It stars Thomas Jane. Jane plays a captain of detectives in South Africa in the 1970s during apartheid. After something goes wrong during one of the riots he vows to never do riot control again. He soon realizes that with all the police gone in the city for riot control, he realizes that any white man could easily walk into a bank and rob it blind, and that's exactly what he does. Good movie that I'm sure at least a few of you'll have seen at the video store in the last few months. I would definately recommend it.

A Boy and His Dog (Best Sci Fi Movie EVER)
SLC PUNK (Awesome, just awesome)
Wasabi (Jean Reno kicks so much ass)
Duets (Good date movie, good music)
Little Nemo In Slumberland (anime-ish, new to DVD)

Not a lot of people and none of my friends watched Shaun of the Dead. I also thought Lost in Translation was pretty good.

I'm going to add Ice Pirates with Robert Urich. It was on a few times when I was a kid on the Super Saturday or Super Sunday Mattinees on Fox (anyone remember those?). I haven't seen it in at least 10 years, but it was cool back then. Does anyone know if this is even out on dvd? I've searched, and have come up empty.

edit: just did a search (haven't searched in a while I guess) and I see that it comes out Feb. 15th. Oh man, I can't wait.....

Dog Soldier
- A Scotish film about werewolves

Lol, saw this a while back. Poor excuse for cinema, but humorous nonetheless.

I definitely agree with the people who mentioned:

The Third Man - you could even argue that this was Orson Welles' greatest work and not Citizen Kane

12 Angry Men - classic, classic, classic; Henry Fonda sure knew how to pick the right movies to star in

American Splendor - if you're a nerd in the least bit (and c'mon I know a lot of us CAGs are) then you'll love this movie about underground comic artist Harvey Pekar; I still can't believe that Toby is for real...

Boiler Room - this movie contains Vin Diesel's finest acting performance, and believe me, that's a lot better than it sounds

City of God - great, character-hopping look into the fear-stricken, crime-overrun ghettos of Brazil

The Killer - it seems that people have always heard of Hard Boiled, but never the other great (and arguably better) John Woo & Chow Yun Fat teamup.

High Fidelity - this movie admittedly won't do much for you if you don't love and know indie rock intimately, but its ideas on love & relationships are very real and very relatable

Sexy Beast - when you're watching this film, try to picture Ben Kingsley as Gandhi while he's cursing up a storm at an alarming rate; the rest of the movie's pretty fun to watch, too

Once Upon a Time in the West - I still cannot believe how many people have not watched this; it's the best western ever made, it's Sergio Leone's finest work, it's Charles Bronson's best movie, it may even be Henry Fonda's best movie

Wild Strawberries - I have to admit that I'm not necessarily of Ingmar Bergman's general body of work, but this one hit me on all levels

Ikiru - there are few movies sadder and yet there are few movies more life-affirming than Akira Kurosawa's drama about the human condition

Kind Hearts and Coronets - the greatest of the Ealing comedies, marked by Alec Guiness' deft comedic touch

No Man's Land - a black comedy about the tragedy of war; it works out a lot better than the description might sound

Paper Moon - probably the best "buddy" flick that involves a grownup stuck with a kid; it's laugh-out-loud funny and heartwarming, too

Wait Until Dark - Audrey Hepburn plays a blind woman who must contend with thieves hiding in her apartment...chilling

My Man Godfrey - screwball comedy at its finest, with impeccable performances from the entire cast

Running Out of Time - this Hong Kong film is, in my opinion, one of the greatest modern crime stories

The Desperate Hours - a thriller starring Humphrey Bogart as a smalltime crook who ends up holding a family hostage in their own house

Needing You - I usually dislike Asian romantic comedies but this Andy Lau & Sammi Cheng vehicle somehow worked for me

Samurai Fiction - it's a samurai action flick, but it's wild and irreverent with a strangely appealing modern soundtrack; it feels kind of like Kill Bill and it's even got a real albeit odd connection -- the actor who plays the main antagonist actually wrote the Kill Bill theme song ("Battle Without Honor or Humanity")

It Happened One Night - I never liked Gone with the Wind much, but Clark Gable really showed me here why he was such a big star

The Mission - like I said for Running Out of Time, this Hong Kong film is also, in my opinion, one of the greatest modern crime stories; you know what, just watch all of director Johnny To's action films

The Day of the Jackal - this was remade a while back by Bruce Willis; the original is far, far superior

All the King's Men - I believe that they are currently remaking this political epic; catch the original anyway

Charade - might be the best "Hitchcock" film not made by Hitchcock himself

Musa - great Korean period piece action film on par with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero

Panic - yet another William H. Macy black comedy that had me laughing out loud

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three - one of the great forgotten thrillers

Good Bye Lenin! - a hilarious story about a young East German man whose mother, an ardent socialist, has just awakened after being in a coma all through the fall of communism in their country; because the truth would be a fatal shock in her sensitive condition, he tries desperately to hide the truth and pretend that communism is still alive and wel

Was the Professional really that obscure of a movie?

Well either way it's one of my all-time favorites.

I also had to watch Gattaca in one of my classes, oddly enough.

mookyjooky,............... look back a few!

I love What Dreams May Come!!!

and Peteloaf,........ Dagon was a really great movie.
I didn't read the book,... but it was a fabulous film.

Dog Soldiers isn't obscure,......... but it was a very good movie. It was too short,... and it ended poorly.
Otherwise,... it has potential. The sequel is in post production,.. or is finished, I believe.

Golem is alright. It was cool to see Mulder and Scully investigate a similar situation in one of the X-Files episodes though.

:)

Blood of Heroes-best Rutger Hauer movie ever. Only met one other person that has ever seen it.

Yellowbeard-great comedic pirate movie.

I didn't think it was too obscure either. I had been thinking of puttin it on but decided it was pretty widely known.

I couldn't agree more. This and Re-Animator are probably two of the only H.P. Lovecraft stories that seem to work. Bride of Re-Animator sucked buy Beyond Re-Animator wasn't too bad but just felt too much like the first for some reason.

I would also like to mention Volcano High/second what Sheik Rattle Enroll said. Great movie. Really liked it when I saw it.
Not a lot of people and none of my friends watched Shaun of the Dead. I also thought Lost in Translation was pretty good.
And finally I couldn't agree more with this. Most people I know didn't even see these films or even know about Shaun of the Dead. Also I think most Wes Anderson films could go in to the category of obscurity since they get great recognition from the critics but little to no recognition in the public. Also most people know a little about them and than totally forget about them. They fade into obscurity if you will. You could almost add also Charlie Kaufman but I think more people remember his movies and stay in a state of psuedo-popularity. All of these I'm talking about outside of the internet community.

Ohh man I totally forgot about What dreams may come. One of my favorite movies.
I also loved loved Identity, Kpax was good, Dragonfly was decent, and I also really, really loved the Negiotiator

I liked coming to america too but dont know if that's very obscure

Not that my social circle is absolutely indicative of the general population, but almost everyone I know has heard of or watched Rushmore and the Royal Tenenbaums, the latter if only because Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Stiller are in it. I was very surprised by how many people know and love Life Aquatic, too.

In a way, I'd love to think that Kaufman is our little secret, but you're right: everyone I know has already watched Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Whether they like them is another thing...which is pretty unfortunate for three such brilliant films...

My favorite obscure movies:

- Midnight Madness
- Superfuzz
- Twice Upon a Time (Executive-Produced by George Lucas -- betcha didn't know that)
- Shakes the Clown
- Heavy Metal (not too obscure, but still a favorite)

OMG, I used to watch Super Fuzz all the time when it came on cable in what I assume was the early 80s. Looks like it is out on region 1 DVD, but I've only found it on Amazon so far, and it is too pricey.

I don't remember much about the movie, except a few little things like a giant bubble and an empty sports stadium (I hope I am not mis-remembering), and, of course, Ernest Borgnine. Ok, now I have to find the DVD cheap.

I used to watch Midnight Madness a lot also. Should I be embarassed?

Hooray for cheesy 80s movies!

None of those were really "obscure." And other than Coming to America, all were terrible. Well, K Pax was OK... Identity was absolutely awful, though--think of it as the "stupid man's smart movie." I believe The Butterfly Effect also falls into this category.

Identity and Butterfly Effect weren't so bad.

What's your idea of a "smart movie"?

I despised Identity, if only for its god-awful ending. This could be because of how much I love Adaptation (and if you've seen it, you'll know why).
I certainly don't pride myself on watching "intelligent" films, but many of my favorite movies (Wes Anderson, Christopher Guest, Charlie Kaufman flicks, etc.) just don't seem to click with 90% of movie-going audiences. However, you can release something as awful as Biker Boyz or You Got Served, and people gobble it up like it's their last meal. Hand them something that requires ever-so-slightly more thought and attention, and they cream themselves.
Oh, and I did like What Dreams May Come. Sorry to throw that in the "all were terrible" column.

im not sure if anyone has said it already, cuz i didnt feel like reading through this whole thread but...

wet hot american summer is comedy

K-Pax: Take it for what it is...One of my favorites because of it's...just something about it I guess: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...ref=sr_1_1/002-3391852-1948050?v=glance&s=dvd

Strange Brew, funny funny stuff. it started out as a skit from SCTV (which is Canadian saturday night live) called Great White North. just two brothers that wanted to buy some beer and got into all kinds of trouble. great stuff
Dirty Work... if you like stupid comedies then this one is a gem... has Norm McDonald and Chris Farley in it among others.
YES!

That is my favorite movie of ALL TIME! (no joke)

WATCH IT DAMMIT!

Not too obscure, but they go as follows:
Battle Royale (own reg2 raw and reg3 2disk subbed)
Rock & Rule (JUNE 7th release FINALLY!!!)
Best in Show
PCU (Can you blow me where the pampers is?)
Transformers the Movie (I have 6 or 7 different versions, and still have 2 more I need to get)
Wizards (with one of the best commentaries I've ever heard)
Dolemite (aka Boom mic central)
Monster Squad (Wolfman has Nards!)

I think that's about it. Oh, and Casshern was very good, even though it was a tad boring at times.

Quills- About marquis de sade's last days in an insane assylym, some great lines. Kate winslet plays a maid (perfect choice for a luscious, attrative maid to a pervert). Favorite movie ever.

Osama- about a family of women in taliban afghanistan. The youngest girl (About 10) dresses as a boy named osama so she can go to work and make money for the family.

People vs Larry Flynt (not really obscure)- Great freedom of speech movie, what america should be about. Courtney love is great as larry flynts (found of hustler magazine) wife. It's basically about the rise of the magazine and all the problems that came with it. Funny and serious. Larry Flynt plays a judge in it. Second favorite movie.

Opposite of Sex- Favorite comedy ever, 3rd favorite movie. Great christina ricci movie, probably the hottest I've ever seen her. About her gay uncle and his lover, who she seduces and runs off with. Eventually he realizes he isn't actually heterosexual. It's not a love story at all, it's a comedy about a crazy young girl who always expects to get what she wants and doesn't care who she has to screw/hurt to get it.

Well Obscure try the who's rock opera turned movie now turned broadway, movie Tommy
I recomend Cowboy Bebop though
some of these movies im seing arent so obscure, i mean seven come on

I don't know how obscure it is to everyone else, but a movie that I hadn't really heard of before was True Romance. It was surprisingly a good movie.

"dogville" was really great. i'm not sure how obscure it was since it starred nicole kidman, but not many theaters were showing the movie when it came out, so i would consider it obscure enough.

Not sure if anyone has said this one, but: Memento . It's by the director of Insomnia and Following. The whole movie plays backward from the last scene to the first following a man's search for his wife's killer - except he has lost his long term memory and cannot remember much for more than 15 minutes. It's really great and completely changed how I look at movies.
