Once Upon a Time in the West - I still cannot believe how many people have not watched this; it's the best western ever made, it's Sergio Leone's finest work, it's Charles Bronson's best movie, it may even be Henry Fonda's best movie
Wild Strawberries - I have to admit that I'm not necessarily of Ingmar Bergman's general body of work, but this one hit me on all levels
Ikiru - there are few movies sadder and yet there are few movies more life-affirming than Akira Kurosawa's drama about the human condition
Kind Hearts and Coronets - the greatest of the Ealing comedies, marked by Alec Guiness' deft comedic touch
No Man's Land - a black comedy about the tragedy of war; it works out a lot better than the description might sound
Paper Moon - probably the best "buddy" flick that involves a grownup stuck with a kid; it's laugh-out-loud funny and heartwarming, too
Wait Until Dark - Audrey Hepburn plays a blind woman who must contend with thieves hiding in her apartment...chilling
My Man Godfrey - screwball comedy at its finest, with impeccable performances from the entire cast
Running Out of Time - this Hong Kong film is, in my opinion, one of the greatest modern crime stories
The Desperate Hours - a thriller starring Humphrey Bogart as a smalltime crook who ends up holding a family hostage in their own house
Needing You - I usually dislike Asian romantic comedies but this Andy Lau & Sammi Cheng vehicle somehow worked for me
Samurai Fiction - it's a samurai action flick, but it's wild and irreverent with a strangely appealing modern soundtrack; it feels kind of like Kill Bill and it's even got a real albeit odd connection -- the actor who plays the main antagonist actually wrote the Kill Bill theme song ("Battle Without Honor or Humanity")
It Happened One Night - I never liked Gone with the Wind much, but Clark Gable really showed me here why he was such a big star
The Mission - like I said for Running Out of Time, this Hong Kong film is also, in my opinion, one of the greatest modern crime stories; you know what, just watch all of director Johnny To's action films
The Day of the Jackal - this was remade a while back by Bruce Willis; the original is far, far superior
All the King's Men - I believe that they are currently remaking this political epic; catch the original anyway
Charade - might be the best "Hitchcock" film not made by Hitchcock himself
Musa - great Korean period piece action film on par with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero
Panic - yet another William H. Macy black comedy that had me laughing out loud
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three - one of the great forgotten thrillers
Good Bye Lenin! - a hilarious story about a young East German man whose mother, an ardent socialist, has just awakened after being in a coma all through the fall of communism in their country; because the truth would be a fatal shock in her sensitive condition, he tries desperately to hide the truth and pretend that communism is still alive and wel
