What's up CAGers just found this deal going on right now. Pre-order the OnLive Microconsole before it comes out on Dec 2 and you get a free game PlayPass. The Microconsole package includes a OnLive controller, Power adapter, HDMI cable, Ethernet cable, USB cable and 2 AA batteries, and the microconsole itself.

https://www.onlive.com/store/order

[Edit]
I forgot to remind you guys that the previous $15 a month free is gone for the service and also games at the most are $50 compared to $60 on other consoles.

Copy > Digital.... If their service ever goes in the dumps, you lose every game you bought with them.

Security of your games is a good point.
This whole idea of a service/product makes me want to page Admiral Ackbar...
I LOVE ME SOME SERVICE/PRODUCTS!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that my line, I forget...

man, the idea of this is so rad. But no security of not keeping my games and always being able to access them scares me.

Hopefully this takes off and they get as many games as steam does. :p hahahaha or steam does a console. haha.

I've been testing this on my PC with a 15MB download connection for the past few months and have been surprised about the video quality. The fact that I can use a 360 controller on the PC is a plus as well. I do have to say that I'm curious about the hardware side of it and if they will be discounting games as they go on.

Having said that, I kind of want to watch the service for a few months before I would consider buying it as another console.

The idea of never having sales sounds so awesome.

really? I have onlive on my pc too and well im not a fan of it, its laggy like crazy and my internet is plenty fast :( but it seems all jittery! and yes im on direct connect

The rental portion of this seems pretty cool to be honest. Now, if only they could just implement this whole rental thing through Xbox Live. No need to make another console... There are so many singe player games that I could rent for just $6-$8 and finish within a weekend.
would this be any good if I only have a 4MB download speed?
4MB would get you a little bit over standard definition, but not HD so depending on what you want.

Wow I can't believe these guys still exist. I haven't heard anything about on-live in a long time, I just figured it died. But, seriously it's only a matter of time before this goes under. This business model has absolutely no chance of success.

I cant imagine this succeeding seeing as PC gamers are happy with keyboard and mouse, and console gamers got their fix. As for me, I specialize with PCs, but get my fix of controllers with my PS3. Not to mention this wont fill our every game need. After all, only games that go on live will be devs that put them on there. We wont see exclusives like Halo, LBP, or any of the sorts on there.

I think it would do pretty good if On-Live tried to market it's games as rentals and not sales. $6 rentals for 5 days for some games is pretty cool IMO. I'm not a collector, so I really could care less about owning the game. I play a game, complete it and I'm done. If I could do it without ever leaving my house; even better :).
whats the requirement for HD again?
if HD is 1680 x 1024, then the math is 1680 x 1024 x 4(color channels RGBA) x 8 (bits per channel) / (8 bits / byte) = 6881280 bytes = 7 MBytes (rounded up)

Mice and keyboard do work.

This is actually a pretty cool deal. Check out joystiqs review, they were impressed. They said there was no lag but it did get compression artifacts on rare occasion. They said the graphics, most of the time, looked way better than consoles.

For the price of a wireless 360 controller and MSRP game you get an entire game console with game of your choice? Not bad at all.

I went to go preorder but I am stuck at the $9.99 shipping cost making me think twice.

makes sense however i think its much lower then that for their high def, something like 1280x720, or so.......maybe even 1024x768

also on anothe note, im not getting one of these console right away......but i wonder how the performance is verse a PC, since this is soley dedicated to the gaming? No other processes running in the background etc to cause hiccups?

7megaBYTES?

damn.

the absolute fastest that my local cable company offers is 16mbps.

what city has internet fast enough for that?

it's not a computer, it's a thin client that plays back video and sends your control commands out. nothing more.

I'm guessing OnLive's servers are configured to send that video at 720p, so it's way way way lower than an actual PC.

I insalled Onlive on a pc connected to my 37" hdtv. It only has a Athlon 64 X2 4400+ cpu with integrated graphics (ATI X1250) on a 6mbs connection and I felt this would a perfect machine to test on.

Yes, there are artifacts and the mouse was a little laggy. But it was perfectly playable in 720p (although the textures were nowhere near as good as on my gaming pc connected to the same tv with the same games). And like has already been said, I sure as hell wouldn't buy anything but a short-term rental from them due to not being able to keep the product if the service closes down.

BUT! I saw on Joystiq this morning that Onlive will be offering a monthly flat-rate fee service. Sorta like Gametap. There were no details other than it would be older games on this service, while newer games would still be available with the current pricing scheme. Depending on pricing and games, this might be the way to go.

smoger-ya thats what im saying..........Like im saying I wonder if this as simply a box strictly for OnLive gaming would perform better/worse then say my computer running thier client, while also running my other background processes on my PC

i herd the flat rate is simply indie games, tho.....no big release rentals.....which would make this awesome!

It's indie games AND older games.

From OnLive's blog:

In fact, we’re pretty excited to announce one more thing: OnLive will be offering a flat-rate plan for unlimited access to a growing library of big studio games and indie titles. We’ll have more details about this later this year when it is available. The combination of OnLive’s 3-day or 5-day rentals and Full PlayPasses for the latest new-release titles, together with the new flat-rate plan means there are great game options for players with any budget.

Depending on the flat rate plan, that might be the way to go, especially if you can just go month to month, pay a fee, and play all the games you want.

Unless there is a huge difference in the mini model vs what is done through the PC version of OnLive, the graphics come no where even close to what can be done on the 360 or PS3, much less a good gaming PC.

I'm on a 24mb connection and the games still look like crap. And there is definitely lag on the games. You dont notice it when walking around or playing a game that does have tight controls. But try for example playing Dirt and taking a hard corner and try the fine aiming mode in Splinter Cell and there is definitely highly noticeable lag.

toally agreed.....im on 60 meg and i cant say im impressed with twitchy games!

I personally love the concept, although there are just to many console exclusives that convince me to stay console. However if onlive ever released pc exclusives say Diablo 3 then I would certainly hop onto their band wagon.

We've just got DSL, so I don't think this going to work for me. I might get Fios eventually, but certainly not just so I can use this thing. This seems destined to fail, but who knows? I'd certainly wait it out before investing.

I don't really understand the fuss about not owning a copy of the game you bought. I'm all for collecting games (I have a HUUUUUGE collection of classics), but do you guys really keep your copies of Dead Rising 1 or Force Unleashed 1 or Fable 2 or Red Faction: Guerrilla? I could care less about those games and would take a digital copy if the price was right.

Plus, what about all the digital PC downloads? About 80% of my PC owned games are digital with Steam or Direct2Drive. That works just fine for people, so why wouldn't OnLive.

I used to hate the idea of OnLive purely because you had to pay a monthly fee just to access the game you payed $50 for. Now that that's gone, OnLive seems pretty legitimate and I might even get one of these... eventually... I almost bit for the free game, but then I saw that the only game even worth considering is Darksiders. They have like no new releases... it's kinda sucky.

You guys with the bad ass connection speeds, how about specific details on your connection? Asynchronous or Synchronous? What is your latency?

Graphic screen shots from Speed Test would be great.

If somebody has both great upload and download speeds and great latency (sub 40ms?) and it is still bad, that's going to be a deal killer.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 27391 kbps (3423.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2538 kbps (317.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

From speakeasy speed test. With that, OnLive runs perfect on my computer.

Thanks for posting your results, I assume you have good latency as well.

Not sure about this comment though, they have lots of newer games, maybe you are talking about the list of games you get to choose from for the free game. I haven't gotten that far yet.

I can't for the life of me figure out why I would possibly want to spend $99 on this. If I want to rent games, GameFly is a better value and doesn't require a special piece of hardware besides the consoles that I already have. If I want to buy games, I want a physical copy, or at the very least a fully downloaded copy that I can archive; I don't want my ownership of the game to be dependent upon some company's servers that may or may not be around in six months. And even though I've generally got a pretty good internet connection, I don't want my ability to play my games to be dependent upon that connection. So what's the point? I don't get it.

turls as stated for like assassins creed etc it seems ok, but games like unreal makes me sad........

and here is my net speed from speedtest.net

regardless its just meh at the moment for me

I really love the idea of OnLive and think it could be the future of gaming, but they definitely need to iron some things out. I do love being able to check out someone playing a game at any time and some of the other community features they have.

You know, if Steam made something like this everyone would be all over it.

new"er" games. I'm talking like stuff that came out in the last month or two. I didn't look in the game catalog directly inside onlive, only on their website, but they don't have many new games. I think Shaun White Skateboarding and Borderlands GOTY are the newest releases in there.

That seals it for me for now, both broadband options for me are nowhere near this on latency or speeds. I guess there is a chance the hardware version will take some of the other variables out of it but the reviews will probably show if that makes any difference or not.

ya turls thats what im wondering.......i mean like dude i just tried Dark Void and it seemed semi laggy......not near as bad....but definitely not the same as if you had the game.

but definitely try the onlive client on your PC its free, and you can test for yourself :)
but definitely try the onlive client on your PC its free, and you can test for yourself :)
Yeah, don't crack on OnLive until you've at least played a demo or two on your own PC. Just because we have crazy internet doesn't mean it won't work on slower internet.

agreed with Dark.....the problem with taking it from others is......well you dont know whats going on with their PC there are far toooooo many variables that could have effected us, so try it and decide :)

I love the idea of onlive, it's perfect the masses and people including me who don't care enough about PC gaming to go drop a grand on a PC or have to upgrade etc. the problem is you have to have an incredibly fast internet which most people believe it or not DONT have then you run into the issue of bandwidth caps

me i have comcast, people think comcast oh fast, not where i live.. i have a 12mbps package and im lucky if i get 4mbps and onlive runs sluggish with the 4mbps and i have a 250gb cap.

im sure alot of people here are pc gamers and think onlive is garbage compared to gaming pcs and of course it is.. but some of us dont give a shit about i5 cpus and top of the like gpus etc.
