Price Drop Confirmed & New PS3 Bundle in August: 80GB HD + Motorstorm = $600

As for the red light...

The eagle-eyed writers over at Playstation Universe were the first to spot the mysterious red light emanating from the center of the Playstation 3 SIXAXIS seen on the new 80GB PS3 box. Could the glowing Home button, perhaps, be proof of a new and improved controller, maybe one with rumble?

Not so says SCEA, though their responses to our inquires and the one they posted on their site don't match up.

When contacted for comment by Kotaku, head Playstation PR guy Dave Karraker said that there was "nothing sneaky about the red light" adding that it was just an odd lighting effect and that there are no changes to the controller.

Patrick Seybold writes on the official Playstation Blog that the Home button glows red when you charge the debug controller and that it is not a sign or indication of a new controller for the 80GB model.
As for the red light...
I still want a debug controller.

It's stupid though, how would that giant glaring red button get past the print editor?

I bet we won't see it on the final box.

Can we really trust anything that comes out of Sony PR anymore? Just the other day it was, "there will be no price drop", to today with "price drop and new console". It would not suprise me one bit if that red light was actually a button for home.

The red light is pretty cool, but I bet that is till the 'proto' box art. Hopefully it wll change to reflect no glow...unless there will be a glow and Sony is just denying it.

Just watched that clip with Jack Tretton on CNBC....Damn. That was brutal to watch. Whats with the numbers? They just made up how much they felt Wii and 360 sold lol

all companies deny everything until the day it's announced. but no, you can't trust any pr ever.

Can I trust Fox Mulder?

They would be the worst PR ever if they announced a price drop in advance. As much as I hate Sony PR, they would be outright stupid to announce this price drop in advance. It would be like saying 'hey, don't buy our console for the next few weeks'.

only if you want to believe.

I don't. I want to trust Skully in that black thong...mmmm...

Worked for a day.
Wii finally dethroned.
Now all they have to do is get Guitar Hero to work on the PS3...

The price drop went into effect today. The ads just don't show it specifically until next week. The 80GB SKU doesn't start until next month.

Ah ok. I haven't been paying attention because I already have a PS3. Either way, any sort of advanced announcement would've been stupid on their part.

Yep, even saw the new "Price Cut" tag at Target tonight.

so I guess now the talk is on microsoft making a price cut. Which I honestly think they don't have to. They are still the dominant console and they are still $100 cheaper than the ps3.
Good to see you posting again dpatel.
Thanks man. Been busy this summer, but back for some E3 goodness. I'm hoping Sony does not disappoint as this has been a pretty lackluster 9 months with my PS3 so far.

When the ps3 released it was at a 499 and 599 price point, and that hasn't changed. Still the same, price wise, anyways. It's defintely a cheap BR player, but a lot of the (USA)BR exclusives can be bought overseas on HD-DVD. So, until they have a REALLY killer app, I'm gonna pass.
And in this case, the pack-in game happens to be an excellent one. I'm hoping this means the developers have plans to extend Motorstorm awhile longer with new add-ons.
That 80gb sku would be so much better if Motorstorm was two players and if the package had two controllers..

No they don't have to... MS don't have to cut the prices, they have to the fix the damn RROD problem first. Sorry, no love for the X360 until the piece of equipement is reliable enough to be used. No, extended warranty and free repair don't work for me. Also, i want the HD-DVD build in, not as an add-on. Yes, i'm willing to pay $600 for it... Dominant console? What a joke...

YES!!

Got it pricematched today at BestBuy.

Bought the bundle set a couple weeks back with the 40" Sony TV. With the bundle it minused $400 off the PS3 making it $199.99

So I pricematched today and now the PS3 only costs $99.99

Plus since I bought it a couple weeks ago I couldnt get in on 5 free blu-rays. But I got a new reciept with todays date for the price match and now I can send it in :)

Today was an awesome day.
Thank you sweet Price Matching!
New starter pack for Europe:
I think that would sell better than the 80gb garbage combo we get. They give you 2 games actually worth $60 and a second controller.

But In Europe they will get ripped off either way with the markup they have over there just like they do now.

Jesus, what's that retail for $1000?

The system is already really expensive over there.

So since it will be coming with Motorstorm, I guess the value of that game will plummet.

Sweet, I've been wanting to get it for awhile :p
Damn, nice!'
You still have the receipt I assume?
Yup, I'll be heading over in a few minutes. Can't argue with 127.00 cash.

I hope so, I just sold mine to FYE for about 40.00. I'd pick it up again if I could find it for 25.00
Nice! I called my CostCo, and even though I bought it in May, they will give me the price difference!

127.00 here I come :D!!
Go buy MGS2&3 with the moneyz.

$500 60GB PS3...is really more of a clearance than a price cut. Sony has no plans to make any more, and once the current stock sells out, it's discontinued.

PS3 effectively sticks to its $600 MSRP.
...OR, they could be doing what makes the most sense and waiting until the stock of 60GB clears out (which will probably take several months) and then drop the bundle on the 80GB and make it $499.99. So I'd argue that the PS3 is permanently at the $500 MSRP point, but there's temporarily a bundle that costs more as an incentive to clear out the "lesser" 60 GB models.

If, once the 60GB are all gone, they stick to this $600 bundle as the only available system I think that would be a huge mistake. We'll see by Christmas time what is going on...

The having 60GB for the forseeable future comment just reflects that there is a glut of 60GB are out in the channel now - either in stores, or in warehouses, etc... It makes no sense for them to continue producing those when they have the 80GB to make now. They won't drop the 80GB until those are nearly gone.
