While it's not in stock at the moment (and probably never will be), you may be lucky and have a few copies at your local CC. The web prices are always the same as in-store (in my experiences). There were none in my area (so the web says).

Link

How can you use their store locator to tell? I don't see a link anywhere on the page.

Thanks for the quick reply. There aren't any in my area either, but I may have to take your idea and drop in anyway.

Where is their store inventory locator on the page? I don't see a place where I can input my zip code, and I'm wondering if maybe the dang page saved it in a cookie or something on my PC during a previous visit.
this is ps2 only? ive been looking to get this for the box.
just play the chess version of Mortal Kombat. I haven't opened the packaging up to try it out yet though. I'm assuming it's like battle chess though.

i've never even heard of it. is it on that new mortal kombat? explain more. most importantly, is it online? i'd love to drink a few summer ales and bug out on the back porch playing some smarty pants in chessmaster. i hear the tutorials are great on it.

Okay, I think I was wrong, in that it isn't just chesss but a quasi fighting/chess game.

"Then there's chess kombat, a turn-based strategy game like chess--except that when two pieces meet on the map, you and your opponent must fight it out. You can cast a few single-use spells to aid you or hamper your opponent, but chess kombat will boil down to a lot of fights between you and your opponent's "grunts," which are like pawns in chess. So if you're playing chess kombat against someone of substantially greater or lesser skill, then it will be easy for the more-skilled player to gain the upper hand and quickly win. However, against a similarly skilled opponent, chess kombat often becomes a drawn-out stalemate."

Man, was just hoping it was like battle chess that you could play online. I have the game sitting sealed on my shelf. I'll get around to trying it eventually.

I'd like to get in on this, but if I didn't, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. That being said, I look forward to any and all reports.

i paid 20 for this when it came out a couple years ago, if you like chess this game is freakin sweet! best chess game since star wars chess

I guess I'm gonna have to just go check at my store. I don't remember seeing any in stock, but that doesn't mean they're not there.

Keep in mind that Software Toolworks Star Wars Chess was a pretty bad game, with just the Star Wars name and some character animations to raise it above the mediocrity it truly deserved. I'm sure Chessmaster is much better than the old Star Wars chess game. :D

Just got back, I didn't see any copies. What I did see was a lot of games that seem to have just come in stock that were games from the $5 sale. The problem was they all have those stupid value stickers with the new UPC sticker over the original.

Now I have more reason to stop by CC today since I was goin to get some $5.99 dvds anyways. Of course any game that cost a penny is worth getting anyways, right?!

Ah yes, the good old Tetris Worlds/ Star wars one cent CC combo. When that happened I went to pick up one of them and the cashier was SUCH a bitch about it when she saw it was a penny. She hassled me and went into the back to ask the manager what to do about it cause "This guy is trying to get this for a penny" ...thankfully I could hear them talking through the wall and the manager says "Well sell him whatever he wants and after he leaves pull the rest off the shelf" upon hearing this, I went back and got all nine copies of them and laid them on the counter. That REALLY upset the cashier so she was tossing them around and banging them on the counter as she was deactivating the security tags on them. The total was 9 cents...no tax cause the price was so low ;) I gave her a dime and couldnt help but smile. As I was walking out of there I could feel her eyes burning a hole in my back, and I still waited to get to the parking lot to have a GREAT laugh about it! Thats my favorite CAG memory!

haha well, perhaps, but star wars chess is how i learned chess, so ill always have a soft spot for it, plus the animations were just incredible, and fairly brutal for a franchised chess game...

i always called star wars chess swiss cheese because the exe file was named swchss.exe

man good times, im half tempted to track down all 14 of my 3.5" discs and install that thing.

Battle chess used to rock. I was recently playing that on my dreamcast... and its terribly slow.

The one game that Mortal Kombat Chess reminds me of is the almighty ARCHON.

That game was flat out awesome. Get some buddies together each pick a few characters and then bamo the game is on with 4-6 players duking it out. Good times indeed.

Speaking of Archon, Wrath Unleashed took the same core gameplay style and put it on hex-based terrain.

Which is funny, since I've seen those on the shelf at CC with a $99.99 price on them. Even funnier is the "Promotional Offer, Not For Resale" slapped across the front. Sorry for the low-res pics, they were from my camera phone.

I'll be checking out my CC in about 22 minutes. I'll post whatever I find. Mine is usually good about having old crap in stock, just because they never, ever, ever update their price stickers, so nobody ever buys any games there. Until a game hits the value rack, the sticker never gets updated, and once it hits that rack, it never gets updated again. :p

Please do. I've been considering getting the Live-enabled Xbox version for a month or so, but for the price difference, I could go with the PS2 model instead. Of course if this price isn't available in-store, I'll get the Xbox version I've wanted all along. Thanks.
YoshiFan1, what games are you talking about? Since there have been a couple of $5 sales, I'm curious...
Games from the summer $5 clearance sale. Games like SX Superstar on Gamecube for example.
so has anyone snagged a copy of this yet? or has CC teased us? dont tell me that CAG was completely absent on one of the cheapest deals of all time
Just got back and got a copy for a penny.

The only thing is, you have to remove the "value" UPC from the back in order for it to ring up $.01, or else it will scan at $14.99.

Which makes me wonder how many of the "value" sticker games would be cheaper if we were to remove the UPC from the plastic.

Edit: for the more "resourceful" CAGs out there...This game is elligible for trade at EBgames, essentially making your PSP games free.

Many, many of the $5 CC games from the July 04 sale ended up this way after about a month or so. Remove the "Value" sticker from them, boom, scanned at $4.99.

Yeah, I know that because a couple of employees helped me last summer by peeling the stickers off any remaining games that were $5...I'm just curious to see how many titles in those bins today have discounted prices.

So...ehh...if a game has a "value" sticker on it, it's cool to just remove it? CC doesn't care, or is it important to be stealthy about this? Is it unethical, you figure? Or do you mean something else?

My CC did NOT have any copies of Chessmaster. I checked every shelf that had value/clearance games. :(
Oh well...it just wasn't meant to be for me this time.

Eh heh, that's a good question...The easiest and first course of action would be to bring the game up to the customer service desk and point out that the price online is $.01...They should be able to adjust it for you.

The second thing you could do is explain to a cashier that if they scan the barcode on the box rather than the one on the plastic it would ring up for $.01.

If all else fails, you can be "sneaky-sneaky" and gently remove the UPC sticker from the plastic and check-out as usual. As for how ethical it is, all I can say is that I've had employees willingly tear off UPCs just to scan the one on the box for me.

I can also post a high-res pic of my receipt if needed.

What a bitch. Poor girl had to do her job and deactivate games as if she was asked to clean the toilet. Unless she was pissed that she didn't get in on the deal...

Had no trouble picking up a copy of the Star Wars/Tetris combo last year for a penny, but the manager was surprised that it was still on the floor since usually the employees clean items out at that kind of price...but I acted pretty quick after the news broke on CAG, so I don't think I gave them much of a chance.
