PS2 Emulation coming to PS3 (NOT HD Remakes) - God Hand, Maximo and more Oct 4th 2012
:applause:Thankfully I picked up a PS2 slim from Target when they clearanced them a while ago. So for $50 I have a way to play the few PS2 games I may still want to play in the future in the way they were intended and without making Sony more motherfuckin' money at my expense.
You sure showed them...by spending $50 on their system.
Let me quote the FIRST post in this thread and bold it again for everyone who has trouble reading..

Never was it said that the emulator would be added in for people to use their discs, not even once. They just have a in house emulator that they will be doing ps2 iso dumps onto PSN for you to download, they'll look and play like they do on a BC PS3, except everyone including slim owners can enjoy them.

Why is this so hard to grasp? Also, not everyone has played everything the PS2 has to offer, a lot of games have gone niche status and are very expensive, so rather then go buy old used discs are high prices, you can get them online for a fair price, and the publishers of these games get the money instead of some reseller or gamestop.
This pretty much sums up this point^ To buy God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere Used and Ring of Red today on Amazon would cost - $64.58 shipped with no tax. Three are disc only acceptable and two are like new and very good. If these end up $9.99 on PSN I think that is a better deal IMO, especially if they are eligible for a discount with PS+.

Since it will be optional to buy them (Sony is not forcing anyone to purchase them) it seems like a win/win. Money for publishers and Sony and cheap available games for customer. Disc backwards compatibility is obviously better, but that just isn't going to happen.

LOL....you mean we can't play games anymore without trophies...for fuck's sake, come on man. #-o

Before 2008 we will label all games W.O.T. :joystick:, the era thus far shall now be known as W.T.

Hillarious...

**(W.O.T. Without Trophies, W.T. With Trophies)
It's not about the trophies. It's about them removing BC from the Ps3, then adding straight Ps2 rips to the PSN store without any upgrades. I mean they left ps1 BC in, and they released Ps1 classics for those without Ps1's since that's a 2 generation old system that maybe not everybody has 1 anymore or was too young to play them, but Ps2 can still be found in large amounts and in working condition. Not only that Capcom has shown that they CAN add trophies to old ps2 games.

I have a huge backlog of old consoles and hand held games, so no I don't care about trophies when playing a game. I'm just using it as an example to show how little effort is being put into this process and how BS it is they're selling Ps2 games when they removed BC.
You sure showed them...by spending $50 on their system.
Oh I know. I gave them $50 for one of their systems, but by doing so that means I can just find the disc versions of the older games I may wanna play and NOT pay $10 per for some dd versions.:booty:;)

FYI, God Hand was officially priced at $10, so remove any doubt that this will be the norm. If this was posted already, I don't really care.

Nobody is forcing you to buy these PS2 games. It's meant for people who never owned a PS2 or a PS1.

You're confusing hardware emulation (PS2 BC) with software emulation (PS1 BC), which has little to do with either. PS2 BC was cut when they needed to make the PS3 cheaper to produce as quickly as possible, but there would be no reason to remove PS1 BC from the firmware. As it's been stated, these aren't straight rips since the emulation they're using doesn't seem to be as fleshed out as their PS1 emulator.

Capcom didn't add trophies to old PS2 games that were ripped, they ported the games to the PS3 and Xbox 360 and reworked a number of things during development. It cost them a lot more to make each of the RE games for PSN and XBLA than it costs them to get Maximo and God Hand on PSN.

I'm very interested to see how these games are going to look, being on a large widescreen with HDMI and all. I have my PS2 hooked up to a 19" 4:3 CRT tv, simply because it looks so much sharper. I had it on my big tv for awhile and it looked terrible even with component cables.
And there's the reason you'll never see them released either. DMGS is just that a novelty (I picked it up cause I'm a huge fan of MGS) but I'm sure other than out of casual interest, unless there are other MGS megafans out there we won't see too many releases on par with the niche sector, they'll mine the more popular titles then some oddities like God Hand will pop up from time to time and get released.

Just like the PS1 Classics selection, I hope folks won't get there hopes up for seeing some little known, little seen title pop up so they don't have to plunk down $90 on Ebay to get to play it unless they play it on an emu through other means.

I'm a huge fan of MGS as well.
I tried tracking down DMGS during the PS2 B2G2 free from Gamestop only to find a MGS2 disc in a DMGS labeled CD sleeve. I want DMGS on the PSN just like I want Metal Gear Solid VR Missions on PSN. Games that won't sell except to the fans is where PSN should shine.

I totally expect to see PS2 Killzone, Jak/Daxter series and / or Ratchet and Clank series ported to HD PS3 discs before I see PS2 games like Raiden III or Shadow of Destiny (Honestly surprised to see that game was released on PSP, I bought it).

I will gladly buy a PS2 game for $10 on PSN or $20 for an HD version on disc rather than buy it for $90 on Ebay.

It also surprises me that the most expensive games at Gamestop for PS2 aren't even announced yet if there is going to be a HD remake/PSN port:
Kingdom Hearts series, Fatal Frame, Baldur's Gate 2, Fire Fighter game from Konami, Dark Cloud series, Shadow Hearts series, Shin Megami/Devil Summoner series.

Ok, I understand but the question is...

And???

People COULD HAVE bought a 20/60/80GB BC system when they were still out and available, but the majority chose not too because of the price, then complain incessantly when they remove an expensive component to make the the system cheaper and more accessible to the masses.

I truly see where you're coming, but I'm looking at it from my side as an early adopter here too, I have my 60GB (refurb, since the original fried, so I'm not a staunch defender of their corporation) that does all that and I paid for it so I could have it do so.

And honestly with emulation and PS2 systems so readily available and inexpensive (respectively) there's no real reason to complain about it. Look at it this way, if Sony does a good job on this, there might be a market for import PS2 titles that didn't make it over here and that aren't playable without modding your PS2 or playing it on an emulator.

And for the effort part, nobody expected PS1 games to have trophies or high def visuals (even though you can use the software filters to clean the games up while playing) so the point is, the massive amount of effort to reprogram these titles with new features isn't cost effective. I personally don't care for the DD (digital distribution) paradigm (I've softened my stance in recent years), but I'd rather have the opportunity to have the hard copy if price is acceptable to do so.

Is it a no-win situation, no I don't think so, is Sony screwing people over by pulling a fast one and not allowing for a PS2 emulator to be able to play whatever games they own, after removing hardware that use to do that, well that's debatable. It honestly comes down to what did you purchase a luxury car model (BC system) or the four door family sedan (non-BC model).

You get what you pay for.

More than anything from these announcements, I'm literally floored to read that Ring of Red was one of the titles selected. I've had that game for years (was a launch title or pretty close to it) and honestly it's clanky and sucks, why they chose that over the thousands of other games blows my mind.

As far as some of the other ones, as I said niche being the key word, if the recoup cost isn't there you won't see oddities like DMGS, since it's not really a game, I got mine on release when it was announced years ago and it was hard to get even then. And I know other fans missed out, but its one of those things I don't see popping up anytime soon unless released in a MGS collectors edition set somewhere.

Shadow Hearts will never pop up unless Aruze gets involved since Midway and Sacnoth/Nautilus are both dead companies, I don't even know who holds the US rights to that series anymore? WB Interactive maybe?

For some reason Atlus US doesn't dabble in DD much for older titles (the JPN PSN has quite a few Megaten games on it) so I don't foresee DDS or SMT3 showing up either since they didn't even bother with the Persona games (probably because of the PSP remakes) or any of the other games in their catalog. Heck, they could make a mint by releasing many of their licensed PS1/2 catalog available, but as history shows us this isn't very likely with them.

You know Konami is sitting on a gold mine with Suikoden, but how many games in the series have been released...1. That doesn't make sense since 2 is the most popular (and expensive) of the PS1 games, so as soon as we figure out why they do these things, it might make more sense (we've been trying for 5 years).

If I were a bettin' man, I'd say the only one that has a sure fire chance of coming out on your list is Kingdom Hearts.

I'd love to see a Shmup collection on PSN for PS2 games, Ibara, Thunder Force VI, Psyvariar, etc. There were probably over a dozen or more shmups left on JPN shores so for me that would be a push to start buying some of these (even though I can play them)

Time will tell, have they learned from past mistakes, dunno, we shall see.

Just messing with you Cheapest. I am constantly in awe of the lengths you go to save money. You truly are the cheapest gamer.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do for a living? You sometimes remind me of those people on Extreme Couponing where they basically expend the same efforts to save money as they would have just earning the money to begin with. Case in point, given the rarity of these titles, how much time do you plan on spending to find these titles and then how much are you willing to pay once you do? Do you not value the convenience of having these instant and arguably more permanent copies?

More on topic, has anyone heard if these will potentially be playable on the Vita as the current PSOne legacies are playable on PSP?

I asked this question in the PSN weekly thread, do the PS2 Classics on PSN have trophy supports? This is a bit confusing since all of the HD Collections have trophy supports...

No, for all intents and purposes, they are the same PS2 games as before, no extras or improvements at all, just like the PS1 classics on the PSN store

I'm a driver for a car dealer. We go to auto auctions to buy/sell and sometimes when we go to buy I get to take the 'road car' to the stores/malls in the area to deal hunt. It's rare anymore, but it's definitely a nice perk of the job, since it grants me access to stores I might not get to otherwise anymore that I may have hunted for deals at before.;)

Thus far the titles they've released on PSN have already been games I already played or never wanted to. But if I'm going to hunt down physical copies of some of the later releases to play on the slim PS2(or 60gb PS3 I bought for $60 6 months ago;)), then I'm definitely waiting for a B2G2 at GS and looking for them then.:)

As you said, I definitely AM the cheapest gamer.

As for these downloadable titles being instant, that is true. But as to how permanent they are, that solely depends on if these games will still be downloadable to your PSN account on the PS4/PS5 and so on. If Sony continues to allow you to download these titles perpetually, then it might be an interesting prospect, especially if they made them playable on multiple Sony systems(PS3/Vita/PSP).

do these games look better than just using a ps2 on a hdtv? I know they had no work put into making them look better but does the emulator have smoothing and upscaling like the ps1 classics?

Any news on the other PS2 classics coming? I hope theres at least 1 a week, instead of 5 every month.

I dont even know what I would like to see on PSN as far as PS2 games. I want Indigo Prophecy, but remastered with trophies..... oyi
People are reporting that Odin Sphere's slowdown problem is a lot better on PS3
Define "better."

I'm guessing Okami comes to PSN at some point. My guess is this will be for lesser known titles only.
People are reporting that Odin Sphere's slowdown problem is a lot better on PS3
It can't get any worse. I'm sure it's better just because of how bad it was before.

odin sphere, i think the first boss battle against (death?) as the main valkyrie girl was crazy unplayable. the slow down was just insane, it was like constant slo mo the whole battle with flying skulls. luckily that was the worst of it, but it was like the first boss, so lots of people were like wtf and quit there.

They didn't exactly make this huge news! I'm a bit peeved at they haven't even re-touched the subject either.

Was this a month long, 5 Game only deal, just to promote their "ONLY ON PSN" Promotion? You can't just dangle 5 carrots on a line..... and then cut the line and walk away. Finished. ~rage~

I'm seriously thinking of buying a PS2 to play FFXII again :3

I don't think it was the first boss battle actually, but the third or so. Either way it was definitely in super slow mode. I just finished the first hour or so of the game and fought the first boss. Some dragon thing, and there was definitely some slow down during the fight. I'll need to play some more to get to that slow mode boss but right now I have already experience some slow down.

FFXII is going to get a HD Remake/Vita remake with trophies. There will be a LOT more PS2 games out, its a major initiative.

Yeah, it would be awesome if DMGS would become DLC for the HD collection that is released in a few weeks and if there was Shmup PS2 collection.

That sounds horrible about Shadow Hearts, Konami, and the Atlus titles. Game companies are sitting on a goldmine, especially if the title gets a lot on Ebay or other auction websites.

I'd gladly pay $6-$10 for a digital copy of the PSone games: Suikoden II, Raiden Project, Silent Bomber, Silhouette Mirage, Front Mission 3, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, MGS: VR missions, and Vagrant Story.

I'd gladly pay $10 for the mentioned shmups and other games that you mentioned since I never got to play any of them.

^I have to disagree, but it's been so long since I've played them, I really need a refresher. For me, and this is based purely on preference, it goes IX > X > VII > XII > X-2. That's my top five.

I really liked 12 as well, and didnt get into X at all, so I agree with you, but sadly we are very much in the minority on these here interwebs.

Is it true that 12 really is getting am Hd remake? I would love to see that, but would rather them make 7 first dammit! Of course since i am on a role, I would most like to have an HD remake of 6. I loved Kefka, perfect bad guy back in the day with his evil laugh!

Possibly! The only reason I didnt miss it was because I didnt play the game until 2 years later when it was under $20 and I had already read hundreds of pissed off folks talking about that spear. I still dont know how anyone EVER found it.

Well you're in luck with Vagrant Story as it was released on US PSN a few weeks ago so you're good to go with that. Ditto with Front Mission 3.

I dunno why Konami is sitting on Suikoden 2, guess they don't like money. Silent Bomber confuses me only because its out in the JPN store. Raiden Project is too niche (not even out in JPN I think, might have to double check this comment, it might be in the JPN store) for the US, Persona 2 EP might get remade, so no go for now. And lastly MGS VR, again limited market similar to DMGS, I own it but have only played it very infrequently over the years. A game I'd like to see find a new audience is Rising Zan the Samurai Gunman (PS1) it was quirky, played decently and was overlooked big time.

It would come down to companies like Monkey Paw games to release some of these, if Working Designs was still around in their better days they might have jumped on a lot of these (shmups and maybe some Treasure titles, if they still had a relationship with Treasure that they didn't screw up) So unless there is a lot of clamor for many of these titles on the Playstation Blog or someplace that the devs/pubs can see it the chances of many of these games making it out over here in any form are pretty much nil.
I think people were just mad they missed out on the Zodiac Spear. Not me!
not really on topic, but just wanted to say that I think most people who were peeved about that secret only knew of ONE of the ways to obtain the item. I recently beat ff12 for the first time, and knew ALL about the infamous "dont open these four chests or you wont get teh supah spear!!!11" line.

Well, as it turns out, the Zodiac Spear also has a really, really, REALLY small % chance of appearing in a respawning barrel later in the game, if certain other conditions are met (which are not misable unles you, idk, beat the game).

Just a heads up

Also, I agree with everyone Uncle5555 said.
