Well my friend just called me from Gamestop saying that he just got Kingdom hearts 2. While this is all good and nice, while there he saw a sign in the window saying the PS2 has a price drop. It didnt say how much and he asked the guy at the counter and he said it wasnt supposed to be up yet. I know this is more of a rumor but i am pretty sure he isnt lying... anyone who works at gamestop care to confirm this?

UPDATE: This has been confirmed by a few CAGers and has been reported by many media outlets such as gamespot and joystiq. The price is believed to be $129.99 and should occur near the end of april.
how much are talking about in price drop.???
OP is 1 many talking about price drop. (?)

This is good news. hopefully it'll drop to the magic $99 point.

Could be true. When I worked at EB during a couple price drops, they would send the signs weeks in advance, with the price point being blank. Once the price was officially announced, they would tell us to put up the signs and write in the price or send us stickers.

Sometimes (in the case of the GBA I believe) the signs were street dated.
Confirmed, new signs with a place to write in the price arrived yesterday. Nothing on the price yet.
I'm guessing they'll announce the drop at E3.

Either $129.99 or $99.99

The price drop will most likely take affect shortly after E3. Any price drop that is done now will most likely be temporary. History shows that almost all of the consoles have had their respective price drops occur during the big show. Sony will most likely be trying to make room for the PS3 inventory that will be going out to retailers this fall.

They gotta do it before PS3 fever reaches the common man. I'd think they wouldn't go to $99 cuz like somebody said that's the magic price point. Sony wouldn't want parents to easily say "I can buy exactly 5 regular PS2s for that price why would I want to buy you a PS3!"

$119 would be what I would set the price at.

My guess is $129 with a packed-in game. Or it may be $99 without a game. Either way, they'll sell a ton more.
Damn, I wouldn't mind getting another PS2 for that price. The prices for Slim and Fat are the same right?
They don't make the "fat" version anymore. Walk into any retailer and they have the new "PStwo" aka slim ps2.

does Kmart have a sticker for PStwo for $129, I just upgraded from phat to slim and bought at best buy, could go for a PM
You'd think that everyone who wanted a PS2 would have one by now.
They do. This price drop is to attract the "non-ps2" crowd.

XBOX will not follow suite. We know for a fact that Nintendo has a good policy and they always support their system till the end (N64 games didn't end production until 2001). Sony, while I hate their PR concerning dirty tactics :p, they actually support their systems - reason why NBA 2k5, etc., for PSone are still floating around retailers. MS, on the other hand, since the 360 has been out, every major developer, ESPECIALLY the 1st party DEVs, totally just jumped ship and no longer care about the xbox fans who aren't so fast (and rich) to pick up the 360. Is that MS policy to come for years?

What awesome GCN game will we see this year? Zelda TP
What awesome PS2 game will (did) we see this year? FFXII (or MGS3 Sub)
What awesome Xbox game will we see this year? ...Ghost Recon! Blue Dragon! N3! Oh wait, those are all for 360.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter actually did come out on Xbox.

OK, first of all, Ghost Recon is for Xbox 1 as well, and it's made by Ubi Soft, not MS. Second of all, Nintendo doesn't have a new system to push yet, and aside from Zelda, there hasn't been JACK for gamecube for the last year. Third, FFXII and MGS3 Subsistence aren't Sony published or developed titles (nor is NBA 2K5). The big three will always be pushing their new hardware with their development resources, thats how they promote the new hardware. Everything else has nothing to do with their "policy" and everything to do with consumer demand. Tons of people were still buying PSOne games long into PS2's lifespan, so the third parties kept pumping out games. It's a supply and demand model.

Finally, Xbox 1 has plenty of good titles coming out this year. The aforementioned Ghost Recon, Godfather, Far Cry Instincts Evolution, MLB 2K6, Stacked, Tomb Raider Legend, DreamFall, Hitman: Blood Money, And 1 Streetball, etc etc..

PS2 has a similar long list of titles coming out this year. The only straggler at this point is my beloved Gamecube...

Uhhhhhh depascal22, I HAD 2 PS2s from the year after launch and quite frankly, they were total pos's. Both went to blue screens while I was playing a game. The first did so after 6 months, the second did so after a year. And I wasted $300 flippin dollars on those POS's.

An ex gf bought me one(39001), which sadly had a little run in with one of my one buddies nieces(she tripped on it). It was never the same, constantly kept locking up on games.

So, sadly, I have NO luck with PS2 systems.

The 2 I had from near launch were utter CRAP, I'm just glad I bought the Best Buy replacement warranty, as that saved me ALOT of $$$ on that second POS PS2.

So, if this piece of junk drops to $129, then I guess I'm waiting till next fall or whenever the PStwo drops to $99 to play the copy of ICO I liberated from Sears for $10.

I've had enough of the faulty hardware.

And before someone says it, I'm not blaming them for the tripping incident that helped kill the only halfway decent PS2 I had.

If it does then that means I will buy more. :bouncy:

Wow this thread took off! I hope it is $99 but i honestly have no idea. That store took the signs down but it seems odd that they would get informed so much prior to E3. Good stuff ethir way.

How soon will this happen? I know some people think E3, but it seems to me places are getting these signs way too early for that. I don't have any experience in this stuff though, so I dunno.

Any chance this will happen sooner, like, a week or two?

If its gonna hit a 100, then I might consider picking up another one. I have one of the fat ones and its now over 4 years old. Could use the new one in the living room because of the adaptor and the second in the bedroom for the dvd player...

I'd like to get a new one since my old one broke (and the one before that, but Sony replaced it for free). I'm not willing to spend much on a system prone to breaking, even if it used to be my favorite system (I still think it has the best exclusives). And I'd like to get a slim one (both my old ones were fat) with a screen so I can use it portably.

So you're comparing Nintendo making games for N64 through 2001 (the year GC came out) to Microsoft stopping once the 360 came out? As long as they made games through 2005 (the year 360 came out) they should be equal, but you're saying they are much worse.

And other than that there are still plenty of XBOX games coming out (if not necessarily first party).
You'd think that everyone who wanted a PS2 would have one by now.
Nope, been waiting for the magic $99 price point. Looks like its almost here.

LOl Penguin, you n me both. I wish to heck that my 39001 didn't get tripped over, as that was the BEST working PS2 I ever had.

But sadly, it was not meant to be, which is why I'm kinda waiting for the $99 pricepoint to come about, as I have my credit from Wally World and FYE ready.

It's just a question of which place has a better deal on it. With FYE, they may give a $20 rebate at the $129 price, making the PStwo $109 after. However, I think I only traded in about $30 in games to get close to $110-120 in credit, so I really DO hope its the $99 price though. That would make the PStwo a virtual steal.

2 copies of Geist+numerous copies of Powerdrome Racing= $110 in credit(just about). Hehehehehehe

I can't wait for a potential PStwo price drop.
You'd think that everyone who wanted a PS2 would have one by now.
and they will if sony only drops it a measely $20..

In the recent marketing box for gamestop/eb stores they received price drop stickers for both PSP and PS2 systems. They don't list a price, and the stores are suppose to fill them in when the price was annouced. The PSP just dropped to $199.99 (core), and there was a memo to all stores to hold off on displaying the PS2 sign until a price drop was annouced. I guess GS/EB thought Sony was going to drop the PS2 price when they had that conference about the PSP being $199.99 as a core unit. So they sent out marketing materials just in case a PS2 price was annouced so stores would be ready to display and advertise about the price drop. I think the PS2 won't drop until the PS3 comes out in november, so the PS2 may drop in time for holiday sales. If PS3 will be in short supply for the holiday season, it would be wise for sony to drop the price on the PS2 to $99.99 to get more sales in place of the PS3 being sold out. It would also be nice to see a PS2/PSP combo package for a discounted price like $279.99 or less if possible.

Ah dammit My FAT Ps2 is still in great working condition, its the 30001 model and has been reliable for 4 years.. I hope MS follows suit since I want a new xbox since mine has the thorton drive and has been acting up recently..

I hate Sony quality on making video game hardware and expensive repairing cost for something you can do yourself for a fraction of the cost. Most of their systems eventually wear down, even with exception care.My friend already lost ps2 and I already lost two playstation one.I feel sorry for the people who buy the Playstation 3 because looking at their past history the launch system always come with huge problems.

This would get me into EB to finally spend my GC, I have not owned a ps2 since about the time WoW was released(even though i didnt pick the game up til the feburary after).

I've been holding back on buying one because it being 150$.

If they drop it to 100$ i'll buy it immediately.

Otherwise, Sony can shove it.
XBOX will not follow suite.
Actually you're wrong. I expect a major price drop from Microsoft. From $149.99 to $0 when they discontinue the fucker.

You heard it here first!

Except the Xbox is currently $179.99 ;)

Yeah, I can't believe they actually raised the price. I was about to buy one using one of the 20% FYE coupons I got from AMEX but since they raised their price, I passed on it. I know they included the Forza game, but what about the people that didn't want the game?

Especially since the Xbox WAS $150, and Forza is $20 new. So, you know, pay $10 more for this GREAT bundle! Lame.

If I can get a decent PS2 with a Katamari game for under $100 sometime this summer, I might have to check that out.

Sony has had a pretty bad reputation for making crap systems and so I am worried for the ps3. Who wants to spend $600+ dollars on a system with Sony's past track record. I won't be waiting in line all night for one, I'll tell you that.

Anyway, I would buy a ps2 if they drop to $100.

in my experience this has been true with every launch system.

xbox-some had a buggy dvd drive
xbox360- overheating issues
gamecube- busted pretty bad(personal experience)
ps2- of course...dvd/cd drive issues
ps1....not sure i missed this one but ill take your word for it

so my new rule of thumb is wait till the first price drop, usually by then games are a bit cheaper, the glitches have been fixed and your wallet will be happy too :whistle2:D
