I got it for signing up at the Playstation 3 tent a week ago at what Indio/Palm Desert-based music festival? First to answer will get it.

A glass jar holds a single germ. After one minute, the germ splits into two germs. One minute after that, the two germs each split again, forming a total of four germs. Continuing at this rate, a single germ can multiply to fill the whole jar in exactly one hour.

Knowing this, how long in minutes would it take to fill the jar if you had started with two germs?

I pmed you a few minutes ago but wouldn't the answer be 59 minutes since the the germs are already split into two which would take off a minute off of the hour.

That's what I just got.

Here's my solution (the show-your-work-way)

Let G(t) = 2^t where number of germs G is a function of time. G(0)=1.
In 60 minutes (1 hour), the jar would have 2^60 germs.

The function for the second scenario would be twice G(t) or 2G(t) = 2*2^t = 2^(t+1)

You want to solve for t in 2^(t+1) = 2^60
So t=59 or 59 minutes ;)

It's sad when I have not done an equation in years I had to read it more than once to recall doing this in high school >.>
