pimpin, check your local radio shack. It's supposed to be 19.97-19.99 on clearance.

Ah interesting. My closest Radio Shack is in the Mall. I'll try Monday after work. Thanks!

The answer is probably here, but my 5 seconds of searching didn't find it, so I'm going to ask.

I got a new Dualshock 3, but everytime I use it I have to plug it in to the PS3 for it to recognize it...is there something I need to do to it so I don't have to do that?

get the charger strap and put it in your ps3 and your controller. Then press the middle button and wait. Once thats done you can take off the charger strap from the controller and wal la

Ok, so I've confirmed that I'm getting this HDD for Christmas(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0011U65F2/ref=nosim/cheapassgam08-20)

What files will I be able to switch over to the new hard drive? Are there certainly files that I must redownload or re-install?(patches, trophy related things, etc.) Mainly, my question relates to PSN games. I've got Pixel Junk Monsters and Encore fully beaten. I have absolutely no desire to beat those over again. So, can I move the whole Pixel Junk file over? I know most people say that they just re-download the game, but I'd rather not do that if I lose everything I've done.
Is there anything in particular I should look into when snagging an HDMI cable from monoprice?
Not really. The only thing to worry about is length. You don't need to worry about 1.3 vs 1.3a and everything else.

It depends on whether or not you are able to do a full system restore. Are you going to use a external hard drive to back up everything?

Do you guys usually turn the PS3 completely off from the back every time your done? I use to do that for energy sake but I'm not sure if turning it on and off frequently from the back is much of a good idea.

I don't just for the fact that I'm afraid that I could "shock" the system. If that's even possible. I am not sure about doing it all of the time, but every once in a while I don't think it would do anything to the system.

Cool, got my new hard drive put in. After formatting it was right around 300 GB. The help from this thread was invaluable for me. Gracias.

Now time to load it up with downloadable games, tv shows, and music.

official ps3 headset sync
im starting to sound like a broken record. i just can't get it to sync. Or i'm really stupid at this. =). according to the instructions, you charge the headset by putting it in the craddle. then attach usb cable to cradle and into ps3. after charged, push power button on headset while in craddle to sync with ps3. the green light should flash/blink for 30 seconds and you're set. i did this but it kept blinking occasionally.

my friend advised me to xmb/accessories/manage bluetooth devices and then search for bluetooth device. and then push the power button. have the ps3 search for bt device. i think this method is the normal bt sync without the hq properties.

someone here told me to plug the mini usb cable into the headset directly and the other end connects to the ps3. then push power to sync. i did this but nothing still happened.

how should i set it up? and when should i push the power button down? for how long?

so i had it the official headset for a while. but coulnd't use it for cag nights yet.

plug one end directly into the headset and one end into the PS3. It should sync automatically. Do this while looking at the Mic settings screen or whatever and it should pop up

Merry Christmas :bouncy:

So I got one of these thangs today. An 80GB one.

Just a few questions.
Is there a section to check out what's on the HDD like how the 360 has? I just want to be curious as to the amount of space I have left at all times..and can delete shit when needed.

I have my PS3 connected HDMI, so :applause:. I was browsing around all the settings.. wow  What are my best options under the DVD settings, to upscale? I am not sure what they mean completely .... so, yeah.. what's the best way to make sure I am getting the most of this?

This doesn't go for DVDs..this goes for everything else. What are some settings I should have?

Go under System Settings and System Information to find your free space on the PS3 itself.

You can mess with some of the DVD settings while watching a DVD, so you should just mess with it and see what looks best to you on your own set.

Remote play's good for watching videos or listening to the music on your hard drive while away from the PS3 without having to put that stuff on the memory stick itself, like the PS3's your PSP's media server. Some PSN games also support remote play, so you could also play them on the PSP while away from the system, as well. If you're really lazy, you could probably even queue up downloads from the PS Store while away from the system with remote play, too.
Not sure if this was posted in this thread, but IGN has a great tutorial on how to get the best Blu-ray settings from your PS3.

That should help with some of your settings for BR/DVD.

Thanks mtxbass! I will look at that later, heading to work soon :(

Another question I have: I know that the PS3 doesn't die as quickly as a 360 would..but..what's the warranty for PS3? Can I buy an extended warranty from Sony? I know my Xbox came with a card in the box and I bought a 2 year warranty.

I didn't throw anything away..and the box is put away at the moment .. and again, about to go to work in a few.

Oh, and if they do offer a warranty..is it worth it?

Hey, boo, I also got a PS3 today... Well, of course, I bought it myself weeks ago but the kids got to open it today. My present was that I got to set it up. That thing is nice - man, whisper quiet in comparison to my 360 (even with disc install ).

We watched Wall-E on the new 1080p TV I got a week ago or so - first high-def we'd seen on it.... I've finally captured the theater experience at home, it was awesome. We just need a nice stand for the whole setup (using a low table for now). The crappy weather has kept us from getting the that last bit (though we did get a new couch right before the storm hit). But, man, it is nice sitting up there and messing around with the PS3. I played LBP with my kids tonight and they can't wait to play more tomorrow. I'm using a Spherex Xbox surround sound system I bought at Costco a few years ago and didn't open till yesterday. I was going to get a full-fledged HDMI receiver but after hooking this thing (which only cost me $100) up I don't see the point. The sound was awesome on Wall-E and I think it's kind of funny using something that says Xbox all over it to play the sound for my PS3 while the 360 is downstairs ;).

I also got 3 of the downloadable games that were on sale a few weeks ago (my dad bought them on his machine with my account). Once I figured out where to look it was a snap to get them onto my machine. I tried to play Last Guy but it freaked out my 6 year-old. He really didn't like it when the zombies snatched people (even though they are just in the buildings again).

I'm gonna go mess around with Home a bit before bed here...

No problem.

They offer 1 year standard warranty. It's pretty rare that a PS3 does have problems. Sony does not offer an extended warranty to my knowledge. I have a 60GB that is still going strong.

Oh neat. I just gotta make sure I register my console later.
Thanks! I should be out of questions for now.

I can't believe there were so many options/settings. It's kind of intimidating when you don't know what they all mean

I just joined the PS3 club yesterday as well. So far, I'm not too impressed with the wireless load times. I think my Wii can download 50 MB in half the time. Every game I stick in requires a patch, which is compoundingly annoying. It's also frozen on me 3 times - once during World Tour and twice in the system menu area, all in the course of about 12 hours. That and the fact that my Rock Band 2 drums were DOA out of the box is souring my first impressions.

Free demos is probably going to be my favorite feature. If they didn't take 45 minutes to download they'd be even more enjoyable. Now, if Nintendo could find a way to demo their WiiWare like the Playstation Network does, I might be inclined to buy more from them.
That should help with some of your settings for BR/DVD.
Hmm I tried that and for some reason, BR movies still look non-HD, kind of staticky. When I play games, it looks great, but movies look like they're not bluray at all. Maybe even a little worse.

I tried to switch some settings around and still nothing. Any suggestions?

If Pixar movies look like that though, or something like Crank, then maybe it's a setting in your TV that you have to tweak.

What resolution do you have your PS3 set at to output?

What kind of TV do you have?

I'd love to go through the settings and see what's going on. Either something's set really really weird or one of the devices is really defective.

I have a Sharp Aquos lc42d43u (720p) and have it set to that resolution on the PS3.

I can't list all of the settings right now, but I could tomorrow. It's strange because games look great, but movies don't, so I'm guessing its something with the settings?

The only thing I can think of would be that you might have something wonky with the upscaler settings, or the video output format settings.

Do DVD's look "blocky" as well?

Which Blu-ray is giving you problems? It could very well be that specific movie...

Edit: For reference, here are my settings. This works well on my Samsung 1080p TV, my Samsung 720p in the bedroom, as well as my Panasonic 1080p projector in the home theater.

BD/DVD Cinema Conversion: Automatic
DVD Wide Display: LetterBox
BD/DVD Upscaler: Normal
BD/DVD Video Output Format(HDMI) Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr
BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI): Automatic
BD/DVD Dynamic Range Control: Off
BD/DVD Audio Output Format(HDMI) Linear PCM
BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital) Bitstream

Under display settings, I've got these settings.
Cross Color Reduction Filter: Off
RGB Full Range (HDMI): Limited
Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White(HDMI): On

Same settings as I have :( What should I change with the upscale setting and video output format?

Every bluray I try looks the same way (Planet Earth, March of the Penguins, The Departed). DVDs look the same way, but a little worse.

And to clarify, I would say the picture does look "grainy", like someone said a couple posts above.

What type of cables are you using?

What does your TV say the output of the movies are during playback?

What does your PS3 think it's outputting during playback? (hit triangle and you can select options to display on the screen)

Currently, I have no HDTV. I use my Dell 2005FPW with its VGA input for my Xbox 360 and my PC. It's a fine monitor, however, max resolution is 1680 x 1050 and i'm out of available inputs.

I am planning on upgrading to a 24" LCD monitor, perhaps this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001295
or this (it has HDMI)
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-7345

However, I'm not sure I'll have fixed my problem, and what should I do for a decent audio system? I noticed that the PS3 doesn't have a headphone jack, just optical out.

Any suggestions you CAGs have would help out alot.

I'm using is RCA brand HDMI cable.

TV says 720p.

I couldn't find the option to do that, and I tried every option.

I don't know if this means anything, but when I go to Display Option to set up the HDMI, I see that 480p AND 720p are both checked. I can't seem to find a way to uncheck 480p.

That should be fine. I think on my Sony 720p set I have my PS3 checked for 480p and 720p, and unchecked 1080i (since it looks worse than 720p).

Can one of the 'Parental Control' levels under 'Settings' mute [incoming] headset (VOIP) chatter? *Lost booklet and the 1 through 12 levels do not describe what they do when hovering over.*

That means that both of those modes are supported by your TV. You can't uncheck 480p because that's the native default. Do you have an option for 1080i? If so, try that.

The only other thing I can think of is that it may be some setting on your TV itself. Do you have something else you can hook the PS3 up to?

I'd also go over to the AVS forums and type in your model number and tv brand and ask the same question. Those guys usually know the ins and outs of most every type of display out there.

Good idea about those forums! You could try 1080i, but it should look worse....IF the TV is working right. 720p should be razer sharp. Blu Ray's the best image you can get outside a movie theater (one using film that is!)

I haven't checked those movies you mentioned whether they have some grain, but try any Pixar films. If those are grainy, then there's something definitely wrong with your set.

Let us know if you figure it out! I'm curious, plus it might help some of us down the line if we have a weird problem with a new set or whatever!

I've got one last thing to try.

During movie playback, hit triangle. A few rows down towards the right side is an AV settings option.

Turn off frame noise reduction, block noise reduction, mosquito noise reduction and check to make sure upscaling is set to normal there.

Could there be some "noise reduction" setting on the TV? For a clean source that should be off-like I think most of the post processing stuff on the TV should be shut off for games or Blu Ray...I think.
