This might be a noob question but I was wondering how rare are the 60GB PS3s? I didn't know that the new ones aren't backwards compatible and really don't want to lug out the ol PS2 when I want to play some of my older games.

Rare enough that GameStop charges a premium for them that makes them more expensive than a brand new version of the newest model despite having less storage:

That being said, I am selling one...=)

I'm thinking about upgrading to a slim, but I'm scared all the saves I have on my 60gb, including the locked ones, won't transfer over >_<

how painful/painless is it to do?

also, what's the easy way to wipe out all personal info?
I'm thinking of upgrading too. I'm reading conflicting data on whether or not a system backup/restore will restore your unprotected game saves on another system. It'd be best probably to do a backup, and individually copy the game saves as well to your USB drive. Doing both will make sure you won't lose your unprotected saves.

That being said, copy protected saves are gone, period. They're system locked, and unless patched (like RE5 or MotorStorm), they're gone forever. The encryption for them still is not hackable.

This is a great thread to read through:

To wipe data, in the system menu is an option to reset to factory default. You can do a quick format, or a full one if you are more security conscious.
I'm going to be getting a PS3 Slim in the future. Which model should I get? The 120GB or 250GB? I still have space on my 360's 20GB HDD (I think 9-8 GB) if that helps answer it.
Depends:

1. A lot of PS3 games have mandatory hard drive installs before you can even begin playing, ranging in size from 1-4GB. If you want to be able to swap between several games without having to wait 10-20 minutes for installation, you may want to go bigger.

2. If you plan to download a lot of video content. I download game trailers all the time, in HD, they take up 0.3GB on average.

Cool thing about PS3 though it's really easy to copy these kinds of video files to a USB hard drive if you want to keep them. The $50 bump is not a bad premium to pay for double the storage. To buy a 250GB hard drive separately is around $50, of course if you did it manually, you'd also be keeping the 120GB.

I have a question! For anyone that has upgraded from a 60GB or similar PS3 to a PS3 Slim, have you noticed any reduction in noise? I prefer things as quiet as possible and am hoping it's quieter (although as long as it isn't a jet engine like the 360, I'm golden).

Anyone still have the flickering issue? Ive googled around and people seem to blame the hdmi cable.

I believe my cable is good. It only happens when in 1080p

I don't think I'll be getting a lot of video content. I really don't watch a lot of movies.

I think Amazon will have the 120 GB PS3 with LBP GOTY and Ratchet & Clank so I think I'll try to pick that up.

PS3 CAGs,

I need a favor, if its not too much to ask, can someone post a BestBuy link of a 200-250GB hard drive that would fit/work with my 80GB PS3. For price I'd like to keep it under $100. I would really appreciate it, free FIFA 09?

These two are the only two on their site that fit the bill...
Western Digital
Seagate
Both are 250 GiB and around the same price (WD is 65, Seagate is 69).

Cool thanks.

I'm gonna go with the Seagate, Data transfer rates up to 3gbps beats Western Digital's 1.5gbps.

Yeah, monoprice.com is great fro HDMI. Some retailers have the "official" cables on really low clearance prices, but you'll have a much better shot with monoprice.com

What is the best blu-tooth headset to use with the PS3? Is it their own official one that comes with Socom or is there a better one than that?

Is there a list I can look at to see which games have online multiplayer via PSN? I thought wikipedia would have something, but I couldn't find anything.

The Socom one is great. You may be able to do better but you'd probably pay a pretty penny.

The official headset has two nice features that are unique. 1) it filters out in game sound when you use it in HQ mode. and 2) you can plug it in the cradle and use it while charging as a speaker phone.

Found this through google. Don't know if it's complete or not, but it's better than nothing.
anyone know anyong with one of these things in their ps3? http://www.provantage.com/western-digital-wd10tevt~7WNDO03K.htm
I've seen videos of people with that much storage space on their PS3s, but I don't know if it was that specific model. I'd see if there's a compatibility list. Western Digital usually syncs well with PS3s though (I think it was Seagates that worked well too).

I just got a new western digital 640 Gb hard drive.
My 2 external hard drives are not compatible with the ps3 so I have no way to back up my ps3 data unless.....
I get a double male usb cord and link up my ps3 to my PC.

Is it possible to back up my data like this?

What's the biggest 2.5" SATA hard drive there is? I want a slim PS3 but I have the 60gb.. getting a slim would be a downgrade. Putting in a custom hard drive would be well worth it.

I've never had an issue with my PS3. I bought one of those external cooling units for like 30 bucks, which kicked the bucket about 4 months ago, but i do think it helped out. they look like a waste of money, but for 30 bucks it may be worh the investment

External cooling units can sometimes actually heat up the console, rather than cool it. Some of them are marketing gimmicks. PS3s are pretty sturdy, my opinion is to let it cool itself.

I believe 640GB is the largest 2.5" size available. 500GBis probably the most cost efficient right now, though.

Hah, that'd be quite the downgrade. Target and Fry's usually have pretty good prices on 250/500 GB drives.

I think there's actually a cap on how large of a HDD you can put into the PS3 though, as over a certain size will not be fully recognized. Though I may be talking out of my ass, like usual.
FAT32 formate is limited to 2T I believe. So might be possible to get that large in a PS3, once they get them out in 2.5".
Yes it's 2TB. Don't forget though the larger the hard drive you put in, the more space the PS3 "reserves" for its mysterious purposes. I put in a 500GB (465GB actual) and I think I started with only 406GB free or something like that.

I forgot though, that we don't really know what file system the PS3 uses. External USB devices must be FAT32, yes, but I do not think the internal PS3 hard drive is FAT32 (or at least, not stock FAT32) since you can copy files that are larger than 4GB in size to the PS3 hard drive. It's probably something proprietary.

What are the odds of a PS3 disc being scratched and unplayable? I have 2 coming through Goozex but I forgot I won't be able to play them to test them before leaving feedback since I'm getting the PS3 at Christmas.

Pretty low actually! Blu-ray discs can take one hell of a beating. I've never had a used PS3 game fail on me, even when it somehow got scratched.

Yeah, every PS3 game I've ever bought from HWV during their sales has been in perfect condition, barring fingerprints. Same can't be said of the 360 discs; they look like they were used as an ice skating rink.

Hey guys having trouble playing media off of the usb stick. It recognizes the drive but not any of the files on it. I have tried a variety of different video types and pictures and nothing gets recognized. Am I missing a patch or something.

Sounds like you don't have the folders set up proper. Videos are supposed to be in folder labeled VIDEO I think, and MUSIC, and PICTURES, so forth. If you don't have these folders, hit triangle on your drive to show all files.

yep triangle was the trick. Thanks I dunno what the harm is in it showing all files by default

Is this HDMI cable fine for the PS3? I checked the new user guide and only one of the 4 models is still on Monoprice, and it's 15 feet, which is way too long.

URG! No video/sound on my system now. I think the graphicernator burnerated all up in there. I tried holding the power button to reset display and tried different AV along with my HDMI but nothing is working. I got one more set around here I will try but... I might be dead. Wee.

What model PS3 did you have? Did you also try CheapestGamer's suggestion to rebuild file system?

I have a 60GB, refurbished by Sony over a year ago.

Yes before the issue I restored the file system. But after I couldn't the problem even get it to show anything on the screen (don't think the two are related at all). I ended up using my old PS2 AV cables and resetting the display (hold power button until it beeps and turns off, then press it again to turn on after waiting a few moments). Took a few tries (read online it could take a few) and FINALLY it came on the screen. First I got sound only with a black screen, but I tried again and the video came through.

So... the GPU didn't burn up BUT I think it was overheating. Must of shut itself off to protect itself. I left it over night to cool before I tried btw.

I didn't let it run long. Not sure if I will touch it for a while as I decided what to do... I see you can transfer files now to another system so I may just end up doing that.

That sucks man. I recently sold my 60GB and got a Slim instead. Soooo quiet, I love it. But you can't transfer everything over. Before you do a backup, delete all your game DLC because that won't restore. All your hard drive game installs too, delete that. I can't speak for video DLC though.PS1 and PS2 virtual memory cards also don't transfer. Deactivate your system first!
you know they announce the new update a few days ago right? that from what i read should let you copy all that stuff
Nope, but I did my transfer a couple weeks ago so it's too late for me. Good to know though.

Is it possible to setup multiple outputs on the PS3? I use HDMI, but would also like the sound output through AV so that I can output it to the second zone on my receiver which doesn't work with HDMI.
Yeah, there are separate options for video and audio so you can have them go through whichever outputs you prefer.
I meant can the audio be passed through both HDMI and AV at the same time?

Is there any way to get rid of the black borders on the side of the screen when playing PS2 games on HDTV? Oops wrong thread. I meant when playing PS2 games on HDTV on a PS2.
