PS3 FAQ's: PSN, Gaming, Hardware, Accessories, Gen. Discussions...etc.

Hey guys, I need some help.

I got a PS3 for Christmas, and I connected it to the internet with the same ethernet cable I use for my 360. The connection test works fine and I can connect to the internet browser, but whenever I try to either make a new PSN account or use an existing one, it sits for a few minutes and then I get the message: "The connection to the server timed out."

I should also note that I wasn't able to update my ps3 firmware through the internet and instead had to save the update to my memory stick and update through that. And when I tried updating my Wall-E Blu-ray it just sat at the update screen indefinitely without any progress.

I really want to connect to psn to try out some demos and check out the store and home.
Does anyone know how to turn off the official PS3 bluetooth headset after turning it on? I've tried holding down the power button but that didn't work.
Holding down for about 2 seconds should work. Works for me at least. Does the light not change when you hold the button?

To many new PS3 hitting the servers at the same time. Give it a few days to calm down.

I don't own more than 10 PS3 games, but Heavenly Sword has the worst load times of them all. Especially the initial load screens.
Weird. I honestly don't know what you mean. I'm trying to think back over it, and can't remember any load times at all. The only Playstation 3 game I can think of where I can even really notice that it's technically loading is Call of Duty 4 that I'm playing right now...only it loads during these cool videos that set up the next level and flow right into it, and I wouldn't skip those anyway (and the load time's still pretty short).

Honestly the last game with any load time that sort of annoyed me was Final Fantasy 3 on the DS...and even there it wasn't bad, I guess it just annoyed me that it ran slower than the older games, and for no benefit for me as I like the older graphics better (or the really neat sort of modern retro style they did for FF1 and 2 on the PSP).
I use mine on average 5 times a week, watching a 30 minute show each day. I got mine back in September, still using the original batteries, and the PS3 is only reporting it's at half power. My guess is either it's not automatically turning off or it's the batteries you're using. Try turning on the automatic controller off function and see if that helps (mine is set to 10 minute timeout)
Are we talking about the remote control? I've had mine I guess a few months. Haven't used it a ton (just for Blu Rays), but it's fine so far.

NiMH technically has more power, but except for the new ones from like Duracell (pre charged or something like that) they lose power fairly quickly even if you don't use them, so they'd be sort of bad for remote controls, I guess (like you'd probably have to swap them every couple of months I imagine).

So for using Remote Play to play one of my PS1 games on my PSP, would I be able to save my progress on my memory stick, or would I not be able to save at all?

Since you're using remote play, it would save to the PS3. Since you're basically playing the PS3 via the PSP.

You can also download the game and save to the PSP and play without remote play.

You mean just the PS1 games you get off of PSN right? Or can I put a PS1 game I own in the PS3 and then download it to the PSP? I know I can do this If I hack my PSP but I'm not sure if I can do that without hacking it.

Yeah, just the ones you download from either the PSN store on PS3, or PSP.

Well, earlier I was asking about the Nyko Media Hub+. I ended up getting this 7port USB2.0 powered hub instead. Now I don't think I'll ever ask for more ports. So far the hub charges all kinds of usb devices whether they be pc or ps3 oriented. Also, the transfer rate is as good as the original usb connections. There doesn't seem to be any input lag when I have my arcade stick connected.

Also got 2 10ft A to mini-B USB cables so I could charge my controllers from afar if I need to.

monoprice.com is such a great retailer. I got some cheap hdmi cables from them not too long ago and they are golden, got rid of the ghosting generated by my crappy ps2 component cables.

Did you try downloading software & firmware updates?

Oh crap, they don't list the manual online. Let me see if I can find mine.

So far I haven't found mine, but from what I hear, when trying to pair it (try a fresh new pair of batteries if you think yours are old). Also, press the enter and start button at the same time. This picture tells you what I mean:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y31/GuitarBoy5150/Blu-ray-Remote.jpg

You might have to hold it for a bit and try not to move your fingers around too much (because if you touch other buttons, could mess it up).

If you continue to have problems, you can contact SCEA via Knowledge Center:
http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php

Someone else did the same and they told them the instructions.

Or else, consider pressing the PS Button for a long time and see if it eventually recognizes it (It still might be paired with the PS3, just gotta re-active it).
Are there any ports to open to make the updates faster? The Burnout Paradise update is excruciatingly slow
Yes.

Port numbers are listed here (PSN might be what you want to open):

If you struggle to port forward your router, look at this site:

Hit square and see if it sorts it into a way you like.
You can also hit triangle and choose the sort option.

You can also edit the tags so you can sort them any way you like.

Doesn't change it to how I want it. This is what I want:

Music Tab
Playlist
Music folder --> list of artists --> songs

Speaking of seperating stuff by folders .. I know I asked this before but I never did it and now I forget how to do it, but how do you move purchased games go to a different folder other than the default download folder that demos go to?

Yeah mak.

I think I have my game downloads with these folders.

1. PSN
2. PSN demos
3. PS3 demos
4. PSEye
5. PSX
6. PSP
7. Software
8. Betas
9. misc

Something like that' can't remember off hand
Quick question regarding previously downloaded games from a new PS3 user. I bought a used PS3, the previous owner downloaded 4 titles from the PSN, but I deleted their user account from the system. Is there any way I can "renew" the license for my account or console? I'd like to be able to play a few of these games on the hard drive. Thanks for any help.
Any help?

can the Ps3 play Dolby TrueHD??

I played Dark Knight on my PS3 and said it was only Dolby Digital, so when I went to the list of audio outputs, it doesnt list TrueHD... is it the TrueHD track coming through only listed as DD 5.1?

I thought I had seen it outputted before? thanks.
you're not allowed to play them using just another user account?
Apparently not, I think it was because I deleted the other account, because everytime I try to open the games, it says something about rights... or whatnot, that I don't have.

Yeah, you would have been fine if you hadn't deleted the other account.

How is your PS3 connected to your receiver? It supports Dolby TrueHD but it requires an HDMI connection. You can't get TrueHD over toslink unfortunately.

It's connected over HDMI

I went to the list of audio support in the PS3 audio setup, and DTS 5.1 is there but not dolby trueHD

maybe I should redownload the last update?

OH! That is because the PS3 doesn't pass TrueHD to your receiver for it to decode, it does that internally. You don't set "Dolby TrueHD" in the audio settings, set it to one of the Linear PCM settings depending on what your receiver supports. But you do set it to TrueHD on your Blu-ray.

ok... I'm a slight bit confused...

When I played Dark Knight through my PS3 it said in the display menu it was outputting Dolby Digital 5.1

When I play any Blu-Ray with a DTS-MA track it shows on the display a DTA-MA output.

So what do I have to do to output the Dolby TrueHD? cause I thought it just does it for me, even if it's going to output PCM. Because all that stuff is listed in the audio setting and is supposed to decode it automatically.

EDIT: I just looked at the whole situation again with Dark Knight playing...

The display on the PS3 says Dolby Digital 5.1, but the receiver says PCM MULTICH HDMI

When I play Hellboy II the PS3 says DTS-HD-MA and the receiver also says PCM MULTICH HDMI

I'm assuming it's decoding the audio correctly then?

Yes, destro.

If the receiver says LPCM Multi, and the "info" on PS3 (select button) says TrueHD or DTS-MA HD, then you're good.

Well the PS3 does not show TrueHD, but it isn't on the list of available outputs.

as far as what output set to linear or PCM, i dunno, i can check when i get home, what should it be?

a new twist... I watched Hancock last night and the PS3 display did show an output of DolbyTrueHD.... so is the Dark Knight box wrong? does this disc actually have a TrueHD track?

Are you sure you have the right audio setting in the movie?
It should say TrueHD on the TV during Dark Knight.
The receiver will say LPCM Multi no matter what.

It does support TrueHD, I'm not sure why Dark Knight is not displaying "Dolby TrueHD" on the PS3 display when enabled, PCM MULTICH HDMI is correct as it won't show up as TrueHD or DTS HD because the PS3 decodes it internally then sends it to your receiver.

I did a Google search and found this thread: http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=1406355

Perhaps try this: I have found that sometimes with Warner movies after making your changes to the languages you have to hit the down button on the remote instead of the X for the change to take effect. This was true for me with Batman Begins as I could not get it to hold the captioning no matter what I tried until I just pressed the down button instead of the X. Good Luck....

Since it seems that Sony (Hancock) is displaying it correctly. So I'm thinking maybe when you go to change it, it's not sticking for that reason.

While the movie is playing, just hit select to show the info.
And if it says Dolby Digital, hit Triangle to bring up the PS3 menu and go to AUDIO OPTIONS, from there, select the different tracks until you get the TrueHD version.

Or you use the in movie menu and, make sure it chooses TrueHD, hit X on it.

This is sort of a Blu Ray question, or maybe just comment. Every Blu Ray I've played except one has run really well, really fast. Navigation and fast forwarding/rewinding has actually been faster than with most DVD players (or video rentals on the 360), which is pretty impressive given the massively higher computational power required...

...but I noticed with Mamma Mia, it didn't run nearly as well. I mean like fast forwarding and rewinding wasn't nearly as smooth as all the other Blu Rays I've played. My hypothesis is it's caused by a bulky Java interface overhead-like it's running some Java program that the movie runs on top of, or something along those lines. I kind of think that based on all the extra junk it has-I mean like you click pause and it pulls up this worthless movie specific interface that just duplicates buttons on your remote. You leave it paused long enough and it actually switches to a completely different video track playing the Universal logo.

It's kind of weird, pointless stuff like that. (Not to discourage anyone from that movie, it still runs fine, but...)

I also dislike that apparently I have to deny Profile 2.0 titles internet access every time I launch them. It's like no, I don't want this randomly connecting to the internet, there's no reason for that.

And my last random thought-what the heck is the point of VC-1 on Blu Ray (or HD-DVD before it)? My theory has always been that it's just some politics. Microsoft got it on there somehow or other. *I* can even tell the difference between it and H.264, and that's even on a 720p set. I'm not even 100% sure I like it as well as MPEG-2, given a high enough bit rate for the latter.

It just seems weird that they randomly include an inferior CODEC publishers can use, and that so many publishers use it.
