PS3 FAQ's: PSN, Gaming, Hardware, Accessories, Gen. Discussions...etc.

Well, I was right - my mom and dad got me a PS3 yesterday... now how would you hook this thing up? I have a 1080i ONLY TV with an HDMI port.

I can either go:

1. component (PS3 to component switcher) + optical to my receiver OR
2. HDMI (PS3 to TV directly) + optical to my receiver

Until I upgrade my TV, I will be using the PS3 to primarily watch Blu-ray movies and play games that are PS3 exclusive and support 1080i (all 5 of them). I have an Xbox 360 that I use to watch standard DVDs but the upscaling feature of the PS3 intrigues me (which I guess requires the HDMI connection). The other issue is that my TV hangs on the wall and the only access to the HDMI port would require a LOT of work to get the cable run properly (out the back of the TV and behind the wall).

What would you do?

I do option # 2 personally. Don't forget to go to the PS3 and change the audio output to go to the optical. #1 should work as well. Either way it'll be the same quality.

It may be better to set it to 720p, the picture may look worse at 1080i since it has to convert a progressive picture to interlace. I don't notice a difference on mine, but it's worth a try.

This is probably a good place to ask. I'm having trouble logging onto the PSN.

I do the internet connection test and get success until the PSN stage where it fails.

I've tried restarting my router and assigning it to DMZ, but no go.

Prior to turning it on, I experienced this weird safe mode but restarted it and it went away.

edit: looked on the PSN board and some people are claiming the same thing. Maybe it's down. Though it doesn't seem widespread, yet. Anyone else having problems logging on?

edit2: Just logged on again, and it seems fine. Guess their servers were down for a moment.

I've been on for a while and haven't noticed anything. I must have lucked out (though I'm not really doing anything online).

Would someone mind posting how to pair the Jabra headset that came with Warhawk to the PS3? I'm giving that headset to a friend who doesn't have one and I no longer have the instruction manual. (It's not the greatest headset, I know, but at least it's free and functional.)

If I had a TV that supported 720p I'd be all set! Unfortunately, I don't. I think I'm going to go with Option #1 tonight when I hook it up (otherwise I'd have to wait until someone helped me lift the TV off of the wall). I need to get a game or something to try out. I'm leaning towards Uncharted (since my #1 choice Hot Shots Golf won't work properly on my set up. :bomb:).

In the XMB go to: Settings > Accessory Settings > Register Bluetooth Device > Register Headset/Microphone/Headphones.
Make sure headset is OFF. Hold down the Answer/End/Power button for five seconds. The light will be solid.
Select "Start Scanning" on the PS3.
Select the headset.
Enter "0000" as the passkey.
Adjust microphone volume levels under: Settings > Accessory Settings > Audio Device Settings.
You're done.

I just got a PS3 this weekend too, and I'm using the component cables on my 480p/1080i TV. When I get a new processor I'll switch to HDMI cables going into the processor. The one I want (Emotiva UMC-1) is supposed to scale the signal to 1080i over component.

Is Hot Shots Golf 720p only? If you deselect 720p in the PS3 menu it should output the game at 480p to your TV, so it will still work. Just won't look as nice.

Excellent, sir. Thanks! *HIGH FIVE*

Am I getting ripped off here? I've been trying to sell my PS3 on craigslist for a month or two. It's 2 years old, has minor scratches on the surface. The guy wants it, 2 sixaxis controllers, FF12, Oblivion, Resistance, and LBP for $350. What do you guys think?

Which PS3 model is it?

I'm having a heck of a time here getting my PS3 to play a dvd. Everytime I start a dvd the display goes blank. I've been able to play dvds before, so I'm not sure what the heck is going on.

any thoughts?

I have some questions about downloading firmware updates and game patches. I plan on buying a PS3 some time during the 1st half of this year when the next Blockbuster B1G1 sale comes along or when/if Sony drops the price on the PS3 (whatever comes first). I do want to have my PS3 online, but that probably won’t happen until maybe the end of the year. My PS3 is going to be hooked up to my big screen TV in the family room, which is completely on the opposite side of the house from where my computer is located. Anyway, here are my questions:

1. What wireless router would you recommend for me? My house is a single story, 2100+ square foot house, and as I mentioned earlier, my PS3 and computer will basically be located at opposite ends of the house.

2. Since I won’t be online for a while, can I still get firmware updates and game patches by downloading the updates to a USB drive and uploading the data from the drive to the PS3?

3. If the answer to question 2 is “yes”, what size flash drive would you recommend? The flash drive would obviously need to be big enough to hold the files for a firmware update or game patch.

4. Is it possible to download games from PSN onto a flash drive and install them in the PS3?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

1. Lynksis Wireless WRT54G

2. I think you can get firmware updates but I'm not so sure about individual game patches and yes, I do believe you can update from a usb

3. Flash drives are cheap these days. Might as well go for a 4gb. It's unnecessarily large just for updates but it doesn't hurt to have one that big.

http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Data...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1233099869&sr=8-1

There's one for $11.69

4. I believe there are plans for having the PSN store available online but I don't believe it's up and running yet.

1. Not surprised that you mentioned that router. It seem to be the most popular gaming router out right now.

2. Good to know that I can still get firmware updates, but it would be nice to be able to get game patches as well. Burnout Paradise is high on my wishlist, and I hear that all the available patches for this game make it a much better gaming experience.

3. Yeah, I'm not worried about being able to find a cheap flash drive. I really want to know if my 1GB flash drive will be enough or if I need to purchase one with more memory.

4. It would be nice to download games off the PSN store, but that's a low priority for me.

Anyway, thanks for the answers. Hopefully, others can chime in as well.

This has probably been asked already, but what's a great way to charge controllers/perpherals when you're not playing a game or even directly using the ps3?

I was thinking pc, but my pc doesn't have enough to charge all my peripherals. Though I do have a usb hub hooked up to my ps3 and the best idea I could come up with was to set the ps3 to turn off after 1 or 2 hours with the peripheral plugged in.

Is there a simpler way to go about charging?

Also, do the controllers fully charge after an hour or two hours?

They don't take that long to charge up all the way but I'm not sure how long.

How does your PC not have enough power? USB 1.1 ports or something?

I use my mini-laptop to charge sometimes, even on battery power.

Is there such a thing as a headset audio splitter? My two brothers have fun playing Mercs 2 together, and want me to be able to join in just on the headset (as it's only 2-player co-op). We tried hooking both headsets to the system, but it only recognizes one at a time.

What you can try to do is hit the PS Button, go to settings, accessory settings, audio device settings, and for output, choose "System Default Device" or something.

That way, voice chat will be output from the TV or stereo speakers, then you'd just have to share the mic.
If you have a PSEye, or use the official Sony headset, they can be used as standing mics so you can just place it on a table and talk normally.

Hope you understood my gibberish. ;)

USB. And I understand exactly, we'll give it a shot. While I have you here, what's a good headset that has audio controls? Jaeli has it cranked up to full in the settings, but he can hardly hear big bro.

Sorry, I meant my pc doesn't have enough usb ports.

Question fellas (and Gwen :)):

My buddy has something wrong with his PS3 dl speed. It has taken him over 2 hours to get to 50% of the RE5 demo dled while it only took me 20 minutes. He was telling me he's had the same problem before. What can he do to remedy the problem?

Yeah PSN is just slow. It took a very long time to get my Burnout Paradise update. Such a pain when you are ready to play something then you have to wait hours for something that should take minutes or maybe a hour at most.

Game updates NEVER take more than 15-30 mins. Even Socom patch which was ~500mb was still done in under an hour. Yall need to open up some ports or something

I want to play my metal gear and god or war games on my 8o gig mgs4 ps3. I have an hd tv and want to know what the best settings would be.
I want things to look as good as possible as I only had the standard input for my ps2 and never got to experience progressive scan. thanks
Few questions:

A. How do you get game updates? Through PSN store or is it auto update?
B. Does the PS3 have to be on to download something?
A: Game updates are downloaded automatically when you try to play the game. PSN will recognize that there is an update. This can't be done in the background.

B: It has to be on, but you can set the system to automatically powerdown after downloads are finished.

Remember you can also run Folding @ Home when you're downloading too! (At least stuff that can download in the background.)

I usually have mine set to shut off after finishing a work unit (although I should leave it on since it's so cold out...)

PS3s can make decent space heaters.
I know it's been said a million times but I love, love, love how quiet it is compared to the 360.
Yeah, it's great. Even with install-to-drive (without which I wouldn't be buying many 360 games anymore), it's still much quieter. I even have a 90nm GPU, so probably the brand new units are quieter still.

My biggest complaint might be that it doesn't offer a true wired controller and replaceable batteries on the wired ones ala what Microsoft does. (And I'd like an infrared remote instead of Bluetooth.)

I read that in order to keep content that you got from gamesharing you have to save the profile or something on your PS3? How do you do that? I already logged into PSN and downloaded the game, but now I want to log into my master account and buy something, so how do I save the old account?

Thanks guys.

You just don't delete the account.

**EDIT** the confusion comes from only being able to have a certain number of useraccount active on a system. From what I've heard, it's 16 total.

Does anyone know how to get items (text of websites) out of your PS3 Search History/Dictionary without removing the entire Dictionary (which I see is allowable in Settings)?

I just got a PS3 about a week ago and have noticed some terribly slow downloading. I've tried opening up the recommended ports as well as taking down the firewall. Is there anyway to fix this?
http://gamer.blorge.com/2009/02/07/optimizing-your-playstation-3-network-connection/
Thanks for the link, I've pretty much done everything similar to that. I learned how to setup up a network when I got my 360 because it was giving me tons of problems, but for some reason I just can't get this to work. When I say speeds are slow I mean they are crawling...it's ridiculous. Anyone else have any suggestions?

By the way I'm using a wired connection.
