Should be... I think I've heard of people using their iPod to make a backup.
Had to leave the system on overnight to format it but I tested the level again and it works! I can only assume my downloads are going to work better from now on as well.

Just a thought, but I'd make regular backups. Your hard drive may have just had some corrupted data on it, but it also may be failing. It may work for ever or it may fail completely in a relatively short time.

I will keep this in mind.

Has there been any indication that playing alot of PS2/PS1 disc games hurts the health of the reading laser/blu-ray drive?

Just wondering because I put a ps2 game in for the first time today, and it spins fairly hard, making it much louder than it normally is.

Also, do the PS/PS2 upscaler and smoothing options effect BC performance (I have a Software BC 80 gb)

Do you guys use the full screen upscaler, or the normal upscaler? I have a 24'' wide screen monitor that I game on (hdmi), and I don't really like the square/boxyness the normal upscaler gives.

Well it happened, the harddrive I beileve just completely failed, the system freezes every time I sign in with my profile, without loading any of the menu icons. In the middle of downloading something, the download stopped completely and I decided to cancel it, then it froze, then I turned the system off completely, switch and all because the button wasn't doing it, turned it back on, the system told me there was corrupted data on the hard disk and all files would be restored, I let it restore, the system restarted, and nothing loaded...nothing. So I turned it off, turned it back on, the users loaded, I clicked on my user, no icons showed up...

So my only question is this, is the harddrive bad or is it the system? My files are still backed up so I just wanna know whether or not I should spend cash on a new harddrive.

I'd say it's just the harddrive. If it's still under warranty and you don't mind being without a ps3 for a while send it in. However, if you want a bigger drive anyway and you don't care to have an extra drive for... whatever. I'd just get a replacement.
A similar thing happened with my PS3, it froze when installing a demo, I had to hard restart it, then it said the drive was corrupt, except it would never restore, it would constantly get stuck in the middle of restoring. I bought another drive and it works perfectly now.

yep, this is exactly what happened. Anywhere you know of that I can get a good compatible harddrive from?

Well any HDD that fits should work, but I don't know if it would work without first having the OS & files to put on it? The PS3 user manual describes how to put in a new HDD.

1) dont know, seems possible. 2) I think upscaler should be put at normal if you want best image quality. 3) smoothing does effect BC, I believe its basically the same as the smoothing option PS2 featured. It helps with jaggies and of that nature, but some (very small amount) of games look worse with it on like Vagrant Story. This is all from what I've researched/read, except #3 which I have some experience with but not on PS3.

Just about any 2.5" (often they're called "laptop hard drives") SATA drive will work. You can keep it at 5200 RPM, as last I've seen, going with a 7200 RPM drive didn't increase performance much.
Here is what I upgraded to.

I always buy stuff from newegg, but I'm sure you could find something compatible at your local computer/electronic type store. If you plan on ordering online and aren't sure about it, feel free to ask here.

Upgrading the hard drive is very simple.

Sorry it's like I'm using you as my personal help desk lol. You've been very helpful, I appreciate it. I found some disks on Newegg that were sub 50 dollars for 80 gigs of space, should be more than enough for a game console...one last question though, does replacing the hard drive void my warranty?

Nope, it's all up to you. No warranty involved.

But does he need to have had saved or transferred the OS and files before plugging in a new HDD? If so then buying a new HDD would do nothing but waste money. Sony encourages people to change the HDD, as I said they tell you how in your manual, it does not void the warranty. I would go for more than 80 gb if I were you, the price is not much higher, its definitely worth it.

He'd "need" a backup of his saves/dlc/etc, thats it.
If someone just bought a brand new PS3 but wanted to upgrade the hard drive all they'd need to do is take out the old one, put the new one in, and let the system format/restore it.

yeah I ended up going for a 160 gig for 60 bucks. I'm pretty sure the OS and and users are stored on the system itself and not on the harddrive.

That's good news. I wonder exactly where they save it in the system. Let us know if the PS3 works again with a new HDD.

Quick question -

Can I play HD Videos / Movies in linux? I read somewhere that it's not possible, but it only makes sense that it could be done.

Whats the deal?

Theoretically you could use VLC or something like that, but Im not sure if its possible. I do remember one of the main draws of linux on PS3 was the ability to play .mkv containers

Is it possible to get an emulator using the internet explorer and then installing and using it on PS3? What about web based games like Quake 3 or desktop tower defense?

Why not just use mkv2vob to watch HD videos on the PS3?

Well you can listen to all the hater reviews or you can try the game and find out for yourself. Almost everyone has decided to go by the reviews and run around bashing Socom:Confrontation even though they never played it.
Hence why i'm asking for you guys' oppinion ;). Although the chances of me playing it are actually slim, but for $10 I guess it can't be that bad :p
It's worth $10 for sure.

The reviews mainly hate on the general glitches and server issues the game had prior to the latest patch, which really were a huge problem, but not so much anymore.

It's an addictive tactical shooter, it's worth a try.

Ya, from what I've read it was only rated down because of server issues and glitches. I've never played a Socom though so I don't know if I'd like it either.

Well if you've ever played a tactical shooter before you know that the gameplay is less about getting more kills than trying to stay alive and complete an objective. If you prefer a chaotic shooter where you run around and shoot everything that moves, your 10 dollars might be better spent elsewhere.

Otherwise, you'll get your ten bucks worth.

I don't think I ever have played a tactical shooter. Everything but that. Not that I don't want to. I'd probably enjoy it more than regular fps now that I think about it.

I bought an extra ps3 for fairly cheap and it does everything great, but one weird thing about it is that it doesn't beep. Should I be worried (it is missing the warranty sticker)? Anyone know why it wouldn't beep?
And by beep I mean, on, off, av setting reset.. etc.

I got my PS3 about a week ago with the BB deal (free guitar hero/gift card.) I also got the Blockhead rechargeable battery for the guitar (this one.)

The battery works fine, the PS3 works fine... but the reviews for the battery said you could use the USB cable for that to charge your controller as well, and I can't. Only the cord that came with the PS3 works on the controllers. Is there a difference between the 2 cords? (The PS3 one does have that block of plastic on the cord...) Where can I get a second USB cable for my controllers that'll actually work? I'd really like to have a longer cord to use...

that's odd because I've used several different types of usb cords for my controllers and they all work fine...

I used the cord that came with my mp3 player, the cord that came with my universal remote, and some other cord that I'm not sure what it came with but so far they all worked. Why do I have these cords lying around I only need one. I don't remember the last time I needed to charge two things at once.

I got a couple cables from monoprice. They're the cheapest around and work just fine for anything. The one you need is the mini-B (NOT micro) male to male USB cord (pick your length).

I currently have my Sixaxis based stick hooked up with a 1ft mini-B to male and 6 ft female to male usb. It charges and syncs just fine. I also have normal 6ft and 10 ft mini-b to male usb cords that also charge and sync my DS3s just fine. Overall I've found the 6ft range ideal. Not too much clutter and enough length. It'd also be a good idea to have velcro ties to organize the longer cords.

Now I have a specific question. Has anyone here used a JVC (Victor) SU-DH1 Surround Sound adapter or an Astro A40 Mixamp with their PS3 system?

I'm mainly concerned with getting an optical connection versus my current hdmi -> monitor -> headphones (3.5mm). Also the Dolby Headphone option on both would be great for DD or 5.1 enabled games. I'm wondering if going this sort of route is worth it?

So far I'm leaning towards the A40 Mixamp. It seems of better build quality, features a secondary input for another audio source, and charges via USB. However, it doesn't have the various other modes the JVC has (DH1, DH3, etc.). Initially I went with the JVC adapter, however, a CAG on here claimed there was sound lag when using DH modes, which is unacceptable.

Right now my headphones are Sony MDR-7506. My mic, if I ever use it is a Sony BT headset which I use in stationary mode (don't know the name for it). So far this works out for me, so I'd like to retain it. I'm not exactly in a multiple speaker conducive environment, so I'm restricted to headphones for now.

I'm sure I probably missed the link for it someplace, but is there a thread that details which PS1 games don't play or don't play right on a PS3? I ask because I just bought Xmen: Mutant Academy from a thrift store around here and it gets to the Playstation logo screen, then NOTHING.

It stays at a black screen and the PS3 doesn't sound like it's even trying to load it.

Ahhh ok...that explains it then. Thanks for the link. I guess I better check the status of any games before I buy them anymore, unless I intend on only reselling them.

I started playing Rogue Galaxy on my 60GB PS3 and for some reason the sound goes in and out ONLY during cut-scenes or spoken dialogue. Other than that, the sound is perfect. I checked my surround sound cables and everything I have connected sounds perfect (including the 360 and Wii). I also tried playing a different PS2 game and a PS3 game just to be sure and nothing seems out of the ordinary. I also checked the support page on Sony's official site on Rogue Galaxy to see if there were any major problems and none were cited.

Has anyone had a problem similar to mine, or could it just be the game itself? Thanks in advance.

That game's always had that problem even on a regular PS2.

It's really unfortunate that such a high-profile first-party game suffers from that bug (I and my four friends who own the game have all come across the problem to some extent). To my knowledge, it's never been fixed by a replacement disc or any other solution. Hope you're having a blast playing the game in spite of this!

You know, i'm not sure if my tv can do 480p or not. When I select it on my TV, it shows up, but it's split in half weirdly. Like the left side is the right side of the screen from a certain point, then in the middle is a big bar, then on the right is the left side of the screen. It's not that fuzzy and stuff that happens when I try 720p or anything, and the games look better, but they're unplayable because of that black bar and it being two seperate pictures and not one...

Anyone got any ideas?
