Gamestop sells various lengths of ethernet cable in their 360 section for $2, I believe.

I saw a roll of about 25-50 feet in the one package the one day at the one GS around here. To get 25-50 feet of it for $2 is a steal.

Do you have DSL through Verizon? If so, ask them if they have any Westell 327W's lying around they could 'upgrade' you to, since I just switched to that modem/router about a month or two ago and it's been great.

I used to have a Westell 6100(in bridged mode) and the Linksys WRT54G combo going on and I had ports opened on the Linksys and that DID provide one hell of a better connection than prior.

In my opinion, the Westell 327W is a much better option than trying to bridge a standalone modem and then using the Linksys routers, since the PS3 is known to have issues with Linksys routers.

The problem was the PSN service was down for maintenence. And I wouldn't touch a Westell all in one for anything. I mean I use their modem because that's what they gave me, but it's garbage, and I use a Linksys router. (A friend had her Westell die after just a few months, and she replaced it with I guess a Motorola that works better...she wasn't putting another Westell in :lol: )

And Linksys is like bog standard.
 
My one friend on PSN uses a 327W and has for a couple of years now and no problems there.

I kind of prefer it too, since then I don't have to seperately set up two or more devices. That shit was a pain in the ass(bridging the Westell modem, then setting up the Linksys settings).
 
I haven't seen this mentioned so I thought I'd ask, I read on IGN that with the last update there were problems with certain games and applications locking up including Uncharted. Was this that big of a problem, is it still a problem and if so are there ways to get around it, especially with Uncharted as I'm going to run through it again before the new one comes out? Thanks.

There has been a new update released that fixes all those problems including the Uncharted freezes.
 
Thanks man. I just did an update so now I know I can hop straight into Uncharted! Funny how IGN reported on the first update and not the update to fix the problems. I guess I coulda missed the second report, but anywho. My PS3 has been able to see my Directv HDDVR for a long time, but always says the shows are unsupported file types. This time it said I had to enable DCIP or something, but when I did so it just allowed the files to be accessed again and upon trying to play a show it gave the same unsupported filet type message. Anyone know if there's a way to get this to work or if Sony might include the file type in a future update?

I just got a Denon receiver and am now having some problems playing PS2 games. Both the PS3 and TV are hooked to the receiver via HDMI. When I put in a PS2 game, it seems to start off OK and I can see the "Press the PS button" alert in the corner. Shortly after that, the screen goes (or stays) black and the TV displays the current input mode as if the input had changed. After a few seconds I'll see some of the game picture and hear some of the audio, but then the screen goes blank and after a few more seconds the TV input mode appears again and the whole process repeats.

I'm guessing this is an issue because it's switching to 480i/p, but it's weird that it keeps looping. I'm searching around on various A/V sites, but has anyone run into a problem like this before? Anyone know how I can fix it?

Edit: I tried a PS1 disc and it worked fine. Both PS2 DVDs and CDs run into the problem.

Which Denon? I have a 3808CI and have zero issues with this.

It's an AVR-590.

Another weird thing is I noticed the TV said it had switched to 720x480 for both PS1/PS2 games, but I still got the blank screen loop with the PS2 discs. I tried with upscaling both on and off and got the same results. Not sure if that would have contributed anyway.

I have this problem with my Denon reciever, a 60 Gig unit, and a Phillips HD set. What works for me, consistently is... start PS2 game. Bring up the OSD through the menu setting on the Reciever. At this point the Reciever /ignores/ the HDMI sync between it and the PS3. Hit Playstation button on controller. Wait until you hear game opening music. Hit Playstation button again to go to the playstation game dashboard. Drop the OSD, and wait until the Denon and PS3 sync again. Hit playstation button /again/ to return to game.

Pain in the neck, but it works. I imagine that you have a Denon 1910/790?

fucking 3.01. im still having problems with uncharted freezes. now i can't load my save file. i waited until 3.01 to start playing uncharted again to finish off crushing. loaded 3.01 and everything was fine. i got to the ch16 (from ~ch13) and the game froze. i restarted and the game doesn't load. in my last attempt, does load. but now when i try to load my save file, i get a black screen with the busy icon. ive been waiting for 20 minutes and nothing happens. any suggestions?

Thanks, it worked! It'll be a pain doing this every time, but at least it's something. I'll post back if I run into a better fix.

For the record, it's an AVR-590 which looks like the 5.1 version of the 790.

Interesting that you guys are having to do that. My 3808 must have something that avoids this because it outputs everything I throw at it at 1080p.

How far into the game are you? I've been playing it since before 3.0 and since after 3.01 and I was about halfway through when I stopped playing after people started having problems and started again after it was fixed. Have never had a problem except audio feedback recently only on load screens and not even sure it is from the game or something else.

I also did get the black screen with the loading icon for longer than normal once, but then it loaded up fine. I guess you could grab a save file off gamefaqs or something. Funny thing is I don't even remember seeing my PS3 ask me to load the update firmwares.

Not sure what the difference is, actually. My 790 outputs /everything/ at 1080p. An original Xbox, a Zune, a 360, a PS1/2/3 games, a Wii...

It's just a weird quirk with the HDMI handshaking between this Denon and the PS3 and only when it is trying to start up a PS2 game. Copy Protection MAGIC!!!

This trick stalls the resync between the PS3 and the Denon until the PS3 has fully booted the PS2 game. Otherwise it just goes through an endless cycle of:

Sync to Denon. Load a few seconds of PS2 intro. Drop Sync. Stop PS2 game.
Sync to Denon. Load a few seconds of PS2 intro. Drop Sync. Stop PS2 game.
Sync to Denon. Load a few seconds of PS2 intro. Drop Sync. Stop PS2 game...
 
I just started using my PS3 and it has the normal beep when I start it up, but it then beeps a different sounding beep when it loads the game that is in the system. It does it every time I start it up and it happens randomly when I am playing as well.

The only info I have been able to find is 3 beeps for overheating, but obviously if it happens on start up, then it is not overheating. Any ideas?


EDIT: It happens when it reaches the games title screen too!

If your TV has picture in picture you can. However on many (most?)TVs using picture in picture there are some limitations on which sources can be displayed together. For example, even though I have 3 HDMI inputs, I can only have one HDMI selected as a source at a time. So to do what you propose on my TV, I would need to use HDMI on one PS3 and component or composite for the other PS3.

The other thing to consider is aspect ratios. On my set I can have 3 sizes of the traditional picture in picture where the smaller box lays over the image of the larger screen OR I can have the TV divided either horizontally or vertically. The latter options prevent any overlap and provide equal on screen space but the aspect ratios of the images are distorted to fit on their half. I've found on my TV that for 4:3 content two side by side images work best and for widescreen images it is best to divide the screen to place one image below the other.

I haven't done this with the PS3, but it works well using two original Xboxes in system link mode on a widescreen TV if you set the two xboxes to display in 4:3 and set picture in picture to display the images next to each other. (Note only one box gets audio through the TV). I sent the audio for the other box through a receiver to headphones.

That's weird. I don't have any idea what could be causing it, but I've had the three beeps before when shutting down. It's the result of a bad shutdown, usually caused by if something is still running when you go to shutdown.
 
Yeah, I've had that too and am always semi-confused by it. Seems like the PS3 tries to actually shut down smoothly rather than just "off!"

The Xbox more does the just "KILL POWER NOW!" thing, although since last fall's firmware, I've had it shut down more smoothly too, which is probably good.
 
If I do not eject the game before shutting the system down, the next time i start it i get the beeps. It seems to be ok since i started to remove the disc before i shut it down.
 
I've got a second gen unit (80GB Metal Gear bundle), and I don't have to eject the disc or anything like that to avoid beeps. I do sometimes get that, but it seems random.

I see. Looks like you'll just have to deal with the beeps. Don't let them drive you insane! I would keep researching to try to find what's wrong or maybe call up Sony and see what they say.
 
If anything, I would recommend that anyone getting the three beeps eject the disc from the system before powering down and put it back in its proper case. If that solves the three beeps, then you know it's just a way to warn you there's a disc in the system.
 
Let me clarify. I am not getting the three consecutive beeps (although it usually happens 3 times over the course of a few minutes). I am getting loud 'error' type beeps if I leave a game in the system or the title screen loads on EOJ. It is a longer tone than the start up tone and it sounds more menacing. I could probably download a newer firmware upgrade, but I haven't hooked my system up yet online.
 
Just download the update to a usb stick and update that way. Honestly that's how I've /always/ updated my PS3. It's fast, and I feel like it's a little more safe, as I can verify the file before I put it on the PS3.
 
An update on my situation, Sony sending me another PS3, it will be a 60gb system. 90 day warranty. Should be home on Tuesday.
 
Good to hear that you had such a fast turnaround, Thomas. Hopefully, the 60 gb model they're sending you is 100% fixed though, since a few of my friends went through hell in the PS2 era with Sony sending them multiple systems that had WORSE problems than the one they sent in.

yeah, i know. i had my ps2 fixed by sony, then I got the same system back. It stayed fixed for a while. With the PS2 I learned how to fix the eye problem myself, by applying lithium grease (and valve oil) to the metal rods that the eye casing slides up and down on. Back then the PS2 wasn't reading because those two rods were dry and the eye couldn't slide up and down the disc as fast as it needed to.

Turn around time was not this fast. But I'm definitely going to test the crap out of the system for the next 90 days.
 
My PS3 is back home... it looks new honestly, as there are no scratches, no marks.. nothing. The serial number that they applied is peeling off a little. It's definitely a different PS3, I'm restoring the hard drive now... and will test it out. The firmware is 3.00. So not even Sony wants to install that 3.01 FW... lol
 
Ok, this might be a question that's been asked before; I've tried to search the thread and can't find it.

I noticed that on PSN it refers to a "Master Account." I know that you cannot change your PSN ID, but I was wondering how do you create a Sub-account. Do you just register again with the same e-mail address and a different PSN ID?

Anyway, if you create a new PSN ID with the same e-mail address, and you sign in via your new PSN ID (sub account, or new one with the same e-mail address as your old one), do your trophies transfer to that account? Can you go to the trophies menu and sync them up with your new PSN ID?

Sorry to hear that. That's why once the 90 day service warranty was up on my 40gb that they returned to me, I dumped it off on Gamestop. I wasn't about to wait till it stopped reading discs completely(as it got slower and slower once I got it back) and end up having to pay $150 for repairs.

Hopefully it doesn't take 5-10 swapouts like it took for my friends in the PS2 era with their systems.
 
my ps3 was working last night and now its not working. I start it up and it just turns off.

so im guessing my ps3 is dead? also its a 60gb and how much is it to fix it or is it fixable?

You turn it on and it just turns off, no beeps, colored lights or anything?
If so, it's most likely just the power supply. They're cheap (~$40 or so shipped) and pretty damn easy to replace.
Mine went bad a month or two ago and it was doing the same thing. It would turn on, work normally for a minute or two, then turn off, as if someone pulled the plug and put it back in. I spent a little while trying get it to last long enough to back up my hard drive, but it eventually wouldn't even go into standby (when the red light is on).

One word of advice, if you're buying a new power supply from ebay, look for someone that ships in the US. I bought one that shipped from Hong Kong and it took a month to arrive.

When I turn it on it went green then yellow to red. Then it just started to blink red non stop and it does make a beep noise when you turn it on or off.

I can't get my cd key since it turns off right away
 
I got the same problem with a unit Sony sent me to replace my original. If you go through Sony its 149.00 to get it fixed through them. Even though Sony sent me a bad system, I see that they are doing a 2 day shipping now to at least speed up the process. I wanted to play Uncharted 2 so bad.

you'll lose everything... you can redownload games that you've bought; trophies are tied to your user name and email... you'll have to message anyone that you did the gamesharing with and get them to let you re download.
 
Do games come with software updates on them? I have version 2.3 or something. If I put in a game like resistance 2, will it prompt me to download the new version of the 'firmware' or is there an older version stored on the actual game disc?
 
Older games will have older fw unless they updated it when they manufactured newer copies. I think it would ask you to update to a newer fw that is even on the game if the game itself receieved updates since releasing.

also if it breaks again will I have to pay another 149 to sony to refix it ?
 
you get a year warranty that starts after you received the system from Sony. you won't have to pay another 149 within that time frame.

edit- it is a 90 day warranty that you get for the repair/replacement that you get from Sony.
