PS3 got YLOD and I have a couple questions

People worried about transfering data, cant yu buy a 2.5" Sata Hard drive case and put the hard drive in there then transfer it to a new hard drive in the new system??
lokizz - what thermal paste did you use? i decided to get mx-2 over as5 and ocz free. I didn't want to spend the money for IDC7 or mx-3.
arctic silver 5 thats what the guy in the youtue video said he used picked it up for like 9.99 at radio shack and they sell it on amazon as well. i think the main thing is to make sure its not a ceramic paste since thats what sony used for the older consoles ( not sure if they used it in the slims).

so is it not safe to purchased a 60gb ps3 nowadays? am thinking of maybe hitting up the local pawn shop or cl and get one just for bc and I always preferred that model but if it has a high failure rate or chance of messing up i'll get a slim instead.

eh yes and no. i think regardless of where you get it sooner or later the phat consoles will die unless you take preventitive steps to keep it from happening. whether its the ylod or a blu ray drive failing or the laser failing or your power supply dying. if you dont care about the stuff the newer console dont have over the older ones just get a slim but if you want all the bells and whistles do some research on how to fix it.

its not hard to get in there and take care of it and its alot cheaper to fix them yourselves than it is to get sony to do it. it just sucks that their bein cheap is causing people to give up their consoles.

so if you do buy a 60b get in there and change out the thermal paste and clear out all the dust inside and be careful of the ribbon cables especially the one for the on off eject buttons that thing can be damaged easily.

i think environment plays alot to how long the older consoles last as well.

dumb question but ive had my ps3 for a few years now and dont know anything about this ylod. can someone explain it to me please. btw it scares the crap out of me. my xbox broke, my first wii broke, and i use my ps3 so much for dvds games and blus. any help would be much appreciated

oh and btw i have the spiderman 3 40 gig model if it matters

My YLOD experience is this.

I was playing MW2 online and my PS3 shut down out of nowhere after I apparently got a message from somebody, it beeped and blinked the red lights until I hit the power button. Hit the power button and the PS3 stopped blinking with a solid red standby light. Powered on again thinking it was a fluke and it ran for like 10 minutes before it shut down again like it got kicked in the nuts. Tried to cycle it on again and this time it beeped at me, the green lit briefly, then the yellow/amber of the red/green lighting at the same time and then red blinky lights.

Basically it's down to an overheating issue, solder joints cracking and thermal paste evaporating. It's fixable permanantly with a reball of the chips with lead solder and better thermal paste supposedly with temporary reflow fixes available to hold you over in the meantime. I'm going to try and get my 60 gig fixed but I'm not sure how I want to do it just yet.

well that really sucks, i am always concious of trying to keep my systems running well but it is contantly a worry of mine that they will break, i have terrible luck when it comes to that. thanks for elaborating more (and scareing the shit out me).

I just sold my YLOD 40GB system and controller on ebay for $158. I then bought a 120 GB slim for $299.99 on newegg.com. i didnt want to risk paying for a repair and breaking a few months later. i hope the new slim I get doesnt have this issue.

success. my brother and i reflowed the ps3 and now it works, at least for now. turned it on to deactivate my accounts and saved saves. i dont have time to stress test this week.

for those putting on new thermal compounds, i would avoid artic silver 5. its silver, capacitative and has a curing time of 200 hours. instead i suggest:

ease of use
artic mx-2
ocz freeze

max protection
artic mx-3
ID7

i cant find the webiste. but theres a website that has a 80 thermal compound roundup. artic silver 5 is in the top 5 but i wouldnt recommend it for the ps3 for the reasons listed above. it still will work.

now i have to wait for my power supply to come in.

what are your thoughts on the nkyo intercooler?

Intercoolers are though to be complete garbage and in theory they likely just raise the static pressure inside the case more than it was designed for, leading to air being trapped. Given that the PS3 fan is regulated by heat load I don't see what an intercooler would accomplish being that they don't actually cool anything that the fan isn't already doing.

Do NOT, and I repeat, NOT attempt a YLOD fix if you're within warranty! A FF save isn't worth $300 (or more!) If you're not within warranty, you're better off finding a local store that has a reflow machine. do NOT allow some man in their parents basement to reflow using a heatgun for you! It will NOT last! I've done that, and it didn't work for me...only because it was out of warranty. Ended up selling it -eyeroll-

well, my ps3 ylod again. i really didnt have it on for more than 1 minute until today. my relatives were over and wanted to use my logitech g25/g27/evo racing setup. well, it lasted 5 minutes before dying. at least this time, it has gird in it instead of red dead. damn.

damn that sucks man. mine has been down for a week now but no ylod but i needed to replace a stripped screw in an important area. btw did you do the fix yourself the first time or did you find a place to do it for you?

I'll be getting my PS3 reballed for sure, just need to pick up a slim. Anybody know if I can get Sony to send me a coffin even if I have to pay for it? I need something to pack this thing in and a coffin would be nice.

madder - update us on where you get it reballed. i was going to get it reballed but didn't know where to look.

I sent for the repair, I received the box and decided not to fix it. Instead I packed it up in the box they gave to me and sold it on ebay.

that sucks-- i just saw yesterday that you hadn't signed in on the PSN in about 2 months. I was wondering what happened to you.

Now the guy is threatening to send my unfixed system back because I e-mail him every 3 days to ask if he's done anything with it.
I just wanted to bump this and say the guy that I sent my PS3 to in May still has not fixed it.
i still say just do it yourself . once you get it up and running back up your ps3 to a drive and then trade it in once the next good deal comes along.

My motherboard was fried, I can't do it myself.

ive seen a few places online where you can buy one.

Where? There are about 5 broken ones on eBay.

Anyway, it'd probably be easier and not much more expensive to just buy a new PS3 rather than go through the hassle of that.
