PS3: looking for Super Mario Galaxy like game. Also Q about Crash Bandicoot?

Hi all, new PS3 owner here. I've been playing Super Mario Galaxy with my son and we've been really having a good time. Looking to get something similar on the Ps3. he likes collecting coins/treasures/gems, etc. Anything to recommend?

Also, I searched and didn't see a Crash Bandicoot game for the PS3. Is that series dead?

No, they're just making the games for systems more geared towards kids(Wii, PS2). But you're not missing much, the games released lately have been pretty mediocre.

And no worries 62t, we're getting to the end of Mario Galaxy, so will need to find another game on the wii, too, so I'll be sure to check those out.
 
R&C is more shooting and less jumping. And its only single player. But one of the better games on PS3. Theres a demo?

Crash Bandicoot is still around, but after Naughty Dog stopped developing (Crash 3), the series has gone into the pooper. The last one was last year on 360, PS2, Wii, and the hand helds.

You guys might like Pixel Junk Eden. Its different but try the demo.

Kung-Fu Panda got really good reviews for a movie game, that might be worth checking out on PS3.
 
You might also try the LEGO Starwars, Indiana Jones and Batman games. Those are all co-op and pretty fun for both parents and kids.
 
Dont forget the PS3 can play PSOne games, so you can play the original Crash Bandicoot. Cash 2 and 3 are still worth playing
 
There's nothing like Galaxy on the ps3 or any other platform for that matter.

Ratchet and Clank is probably your best best if you must pick a ps3 game though, but even that is very different. It's more of a shooter than platformer. If you had the ps2 and ps1 games to pick from you'd probably be better off, as the Klonoa, Sly Cooper, and Crash Bandicoot series (only the ones made by Naughty Dog are worth it)are more Mario esque.

Obviously you have a Wii...get a Mario game. I have very young family members that love playing any of the Super Mario Bros. games 1 through World. At first they didn't understand the graphics, but before we knew it they were enjoying it as much as any new game...correction, they enjoyed it much more.

It seems like the platformer genre has pretty much died outside of a few major franchises like Mario and Ratchet and Clank.

I'm really surprised about that. I thought for sure there'd be tons of games like this, I just didn't know which one would be best. But it seems they're few and far between.

I was trying not to be concerned with lack of PS2-compatibility with my new PS3 purchase, but see all this, makes me wish there was some way to do it.

So the PS1 games look half decent on this PS3 hardware? It's been so long since I've seen one of those games, I can't even remember how bad they might have looked (compared to what we are use to now)
 
platformers are alive and well.... look at the Lego series they're all playformers Lego Batman, Indiana Jones, and Starwars...

Lego batman does borrow from the mario franchise, a little with the different suits that can be used.

and dont forget about prince of persia.
 
The only other one that I might recommed that hasn't been mentioned is the Simpson's game. I think there's a demo you can try.

Otherwise, there hasn't been much in the way of good 3D platformers for the PS3. You could try out some of the CGI movie games like Wall-E, Madagascar 2, or Bolt, but I wouldn't expect much out of them.

There are two Crash games for the 360 (Crash of the Titans and Mind Over Mutant). I have no idea how they play or if they're any good. There's also a Spyro game.
 
Little Big Planet, it's like Mario games, but the physics are more realistic. My nephews loved this game, and you can play practically every level co-op/1-4 players.

If you haven't gotten the Super Mario Bros. games, you should. Kids will appreciate an old 2D game, if it's good and simple. There's really no need to get the latest games, when you can get better old games for much cheaper.

I did buy Super Mario Bros on the virtual console. Was a cool blast from the past. Was surprised that I forgot you can't save it, though. Have to start over each time. I had totally forgotten about that.

Planning to try Super Mario 64, soon, too.

Yeah, it's funny, I actually forgot myself because I've been playing the GBA versions that have save options. Still 100% worth it. Though Super Mario World keeps your progress and let's you visit past levels.

Super Mario 64 is nice, but it's a little more complex than Galaxy. So expect more "do this level for me, daddy!".

You can save on the VC. Push the Home button on the remote then go to the Wii Menu or whatever.
