TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 outsold Nintendo Co Ltd's Wii game console in Japan in November for the first time, raising the prospect that Sony might regain its dominance in the global videogame market.

Sony, which launched the consoles a year ago, sold 183,217 PS3 in Japan in the four weeks to Nov. 25, topping sales of 159,193 Wii consoles, according to game magazine publisher Enterbrain, a key watcher of trends in the sector.

Sony dominated the game industry for about a decade with previous generations of its PlayStations but lost its crown to the low-cost Wii with its new idea of a motion sensor in the control unit.

This opened the way to a whole new range of games and even exercise programs and helped expand the gaming population beyond core users of young males to women and the elderly.

"Wii Sports", one of the most popular game titles for the Wii, allows grandparents to have a virtual tennis match with their grandchildren in a living room.

Analysts said the latest data was encouraging for the prospects of the PS3, but it was too early to paint a rosy picture for the Sony machine.

"Overseas, I don't really see the PS3 doing that much at Christmas time primarily because it's still more expensive than the other machines and has less software," KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said.

- Over here in Germany at toys r us the PS3 sells for 499 Euro which is about 730 dollars. Just insane. I'm not sure how much it sells for in Japan but i dont think the PS3 will ever sustain these kind of sales numbers until it drops to 299 worldwide.

Its nice to see the system selling well. More consoles sold should bring in more and more developers to the system which equals more GAMES to play on the system.

The PS3 is significantly cheaper in Japan than Europe. For some reason, Sony is raping the Europeans with the PS3. It's something like half that price in Japan and the 40 gig one in the US is, as you probably know, $400.

My response:

They held the lead for two weeks, and Wii is already back in the lead - which is what I had said when it first happened. Temp boost due to price drop + new color.

Media Create:

10/29 - 11/4

Wii: 37,617 - PS3: 17,434

11/5-11/11

PS3: 55,924 - Wii: 34,546

11/12-11/18

PS3: 39,178 - Wii: 36,230

11/19-11/25

Wii: 54,362 - PS3: 50,564

PS3: 163,100 - Wii: 162,755

Furthermore, if the week including 11/26-11/30 has Wii ahead, I would say it is quite possible that the PS3 DIDNT outsell the Wii in Japan in November

Still, even though the PS3 was behind that last week it was still close. Only ~4,000 away which is impressive considering how badly the Wii was beating the PS3 before.
Where's TMK when you need him? Oh yeah, ban-hammered. Har har.
I DON'T BELIEVE IT!
Repost from the PS3 Forum:

My response:
Even in the last week where Wii beat PS3, the PS3 still sold 25% more than the Wii's weekly average for the month.

It's also worth noting the PS3 had a 10k dip in sales on the second week it beat the Wii, but bounced back up to 50k the week after. If it really was due to the new color, I'd assume they'd go back down to 20k, not back up to 50k.

And where did these numbers come from?
PS3 183,217
Wii 159,193

I think you're missing my main point, which is the momentum, not the raw numbers. This distribution looks almost EXACTLY like the 3 weeks that the PSP was WAY WAY ahead of the DS. Let me say that again.

The PSP outsold the DS by a WIDE MARGIN for a short, consecutive time and then never again any time afterwards

Does THIS PATTERN look familiar at all?

9/3-9/9
PSP: 15,564 - DS: 77,488

9/10-9/16
PSP: 95,487 - DS: 79,989

9/17-9/23
PSP: 277,794 - DS: 70,538

9/24-9/30
PSP: 102,809 - DS: 72,925

10/1-10/7
PSP: 86,895 - DS: 87,535

Even in the first week of October where the DS beat PSP, the PSP still sold way more than the Wii's weekly average for the past 4 weeks.
See how it fits?

Now to drive the point of MOMENTUM, lets look at what happened over the next 4 weeks.

10/8-10/14
DS: 78,546 - PSP: 59,584

10/15-10/21
DS: 70,608 - PSP: 58,699

10/22-10/28
DS: 76,273 - PSP: 59,792

10/29-11/4
DS: 78,597 - PSP: 59,714

What happens for, lets say, every week after this until the present? I'll let you guess.

I'm up for making ban bets for how the PS3 & Wii situation will play out in Japan for the remainder of the year.

what? no backlash at the OP? if this where Mana, he'd never hear the end of it. kinda hypocritical dontcha think?
It's only because Wii's were nowhere to be found.

AMIRITE?
That was my initial thought. But heck, the PS3's are much cheaper in Asia. Well, we'll see what happens with the 360. >_
