PS3 = Saturn
Wii sports/Wii Play is enough to sustain them the whole year, as far as the nongamer crowd they're going after is concerned. The rest of it is just icing on the cake. It doesn't make sense as far as traditional gaming is concerned, but what about the Wii does? Wii is going to be fine, and plenty competition against the 360/PS3, and that's a good thing.

As for the masses buying new titles, I think they're doing pretty well with Wii Play, and Nintendo has stated that since the Wii launch, 3rd parties have sold more software than Nintendo themselves have. If you can't look at non-HD gaming anymore, well that's your opinion I suppose, but I think it's a rather shallow thing to say.

I don't think there's any reason for them to blow out their release schedule past christmas.. Do we really know anything about 360 after the end of this year? Or PS3, for that matter? (Besides that FFXIII and MGS4 will be slipping into 08) Makes no sense to hype up things for 08 when 07 christmas is looming, and is going to be a big deal in this generation.

I'm sure things we haven't seen are being worked on by all three companies. How long was Starcraft 2 kept a secret?
That's the thing, we do know at least some of what the 360 and PS3 are going to have next year. And we at least know that the third parties will be there to release shit on those systems next year. With the Wii though, it's really up in the air... Nintendo takes forever to develop anything and right now, 3rd parties seem content with shoveling out the worst possible thing that can still be technically considered a product. I guess realistically, I can see a lot of people sticking with Wii Sports for the rest of the year (as ridiculous as it sounds), but I'm still not sure that even they can cling onto a tech demo for more than a year... so even for them, is there really anything on the horizon?

As far as not being able to deal with non-HD gaming though... kinda a non-issue for me since I just spent $50 on a shmup and $50 on Sonic Gems Collection for the PS2 this week. Non-HD is fine, but shitty gameplay is not.

Something that has to be realized with the Wii is, graphics and HD aren't its issues. I play my Wii on my standard def TV because it looks like choppy shit on my HD set, but I'm not concerned about that. We're moving into extremely realistic gaming, I don't mind of Mario doesn't have 50,000 polygons, but with Nintendo sticking with Gamecube hardware, you'll never see a really big draw distance, have tons of enemies on the screen, or realistic physics.

Because he's a fucking moron. And yes, help1, that was an argument this time (also, notice the spelling of argument.) You can't even refute it.
this thread cracks me up..in no way is the ps3 = the saturn...
Yeah, The Saturn had good games in Japan ;)

I agree, the OP is a moron.

BTW, I really can't afford a Hummer, I should have wrote it in rhetorical terms, my bad.

OMG GAMEFAQS.

You've spared yourself here. (and jer too)
Now go to the Ninja Gaiden thread where everyone's laughing at you about the Halo update.
What is there other than the novelty factor right now though? I dunno how long Nintendo can sustain this and I have to wonder if they really have any sort of plan for a release schedule after this year when Mario Galaxy and Smash are released.
planned release schedule = Wii sports 2 in 2008 = 3 trillion more Wiis sold. It's a shame...anything past the most basic motions are a chore on the Wii (and even some of the ones that seem basic don't work too well) so it'll be stuck with these over simplistic games for most of its lifespan.

On the bright side, if you get Parkinson's, the Wii will be the best damn system you ever own.
Oh come on, idiot PSP comment.. Even I want one now (short on funds) but why does nobody mind the other fellow's "Wii will fall off after a year" comment?
Well, I sorta half agreed with that comment.
My point was that people wrote off the DS the same way when the "superior" PSP came around and look how that went. Nobody knows how things will shake out and I'm sick of people acting like it's a solid conclusion that the Wii will just die off in a year or so and we won't have to worry about it's silliness any longer.
I don't get the DS-Wii analogies. There are so many variables that come into play. We can't simply say that since innovation won over power in the handheld market, the same will be true for the console market. I really think that the DS's success was not due to its 'innovation', but the fact that it had such a HUGE market share for the past 10+ years.

many of the better games on the DS don't use the touch screen or only implement it in a gimmicky way.

i dunno, it's just dumb how DS and Wii fans think you have to love the systems. A regular controller does a much better job of handling interesting gameplay and we'll never have complex games on the Wii or DS, unless they use the "classic" controls.

edit: I just don't want to become part of some exclusive crowd that "remembers" old controllers. I'll end up like a Dreamcast fan

(Just bored so I figured I throw out a random movie quote).

It's due to being able to play Mario 64 in the palms of your hands. That's what sold me.

Yea. With Nintendo's huge market share, it benefitted from getting a lot of support from developers. In the console world, Nintendo's franchises are usually enough to keep the console afloat, so add to that some great 3rd party support and it's no surprise the DS was a success.

I know the Wii is all about fun first, and graphics second, but some people make it seem like you can only have one or the other. The 360/PS3 won't be any less fun because they can produce good looking graphics. It is possible to be both good looking and fun, and, at the same time, just because graphics are not the focus, does not mean that the game will automatically be fun.

I do think the Wiimote will show itself within the next year or so. So far, we haven't seen any good uses for it, and that is because developers are still stuck on developing traditional style games. If developers can think out of the box and develop games around the Wiimote, that will help it. For now, I haven't really been impressed by the Wiimote, but it is way too early to say anything for sure yet. I'm sure we'll see a style of games that come out this year, and next that will fully realize the potential of the Wiimote.
